Why Early Access?

“We started as a two-man team and eventually grew to six, then eight after a successful Kickstarter and alpha release. Our early vision was to create a fairly small, somewhat rough game as a way to get our studio off the ground with very limited resources. Kickstarter and Early Access have allowed us to expand greatly on that original vision and to create a larger game with more unique features. We continue to use Early Access as a laboratory in which to test and grow Grim Dawn, with continual player feedback and the flexibility to add new features and spend time refining the game in a way that typical publisher funded development doesn't allow.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We hope to have all core content completed by mid 2015. Beyond that, we will take as long as necessary to fix, polish, optimize and make adjustments based on community feedback until the game feels ready to call complete. We're estimating final release before the end of 2015 but ultimately, we'll work as long as it takes to get it right.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Grim Dawn is already about 80% complete.

The only major feature not yet in, is another layer of skill development we're calling "Devotions," which will be revealed in more detail later on. Beyond that, you can expect more items, more enemies, more environments and more quests.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core gameplay is well established and fun, there are 5 fully complete classes (which you can dual class to create tons of hybrid builds), hoards of loot to collect and an expansive world to explore with many secrets.

Most players are reporting between 10 to 20 hours or more for a first-time play-through. The finished game will probably end up around 15-30 hours for a first-time play-through depending on how much of the content you clear. Since we try to avoid "gating" the player and allow players to access Act 2 even before they've completed Act 1, it is possible to run though the game quickly, skipping a lot of content but there are also huge side-areas and secret areas, so clearing everything will take much longer.

Most players are reporting little to no crashing with only minor bugs. Multiplayer is available and most players are reporting a smooth experience. We continue to work on optimizing performance and expect to release the first significant optimizations in the first quarter of 2015. More performance optimization will occur toward the end of development as programmers finish feature work and are able to focus more on it.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We haven't made a final decision but currently it is expected that the launch price will be the same as Early Access.”

  • Dynamic Weather brings the world to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rain showers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
  • Collect item recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of amazing power.
  • The ability to spend money to reclaim skill points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed decisions that could permanently gimp a character.

Development Roadmap

You can currently play through Acts 1, 2 and the first chapter of, up to character level 40. There are multiple large, higher-level secret areas to be found beyond the main story content. While content is still in development, the core gameplay is already fairly robust and a lot of fun. There is quite a lot of replay value between trying different classes / builds and collecting items. We're still refining gameplay based on player feedback, adding requested features and working to deliver the remaining content and additional slated features. Most players report that the current build is fairly stable with mostly mild bugs and we're always working to fix bugs as they come up. Here is some of the stuff we plan to roll out in the coming months:

  • Act 3 - Chapter 2 to be released in Q1 2015
  • Additional big features to be announced

    We expect the final game will provide about 30-40 hours for a first-time play-through on normal difficulty, depending on level of exploration / clearing. This is our first game as a studio and we intend for Grim Dawn to be a continuing franchise, not just a one-off game. So it is important that we put in the time and effort to create something we're proud of, that will help us to earn a loyal fanbase for the future. Grim Dawn is an isometric ARPG that is currently available through Steam Early Access. Grim Dawn is set in an apocalyptic world where humanity is on the verge of extinction where the remains of a once thriving race are battling for survival with unnatural creatures of all kinds.

One thing I'd like to mention before you get stuck into my review is that this game is being developed by a team of eight developers, for a team that small what they have achieved is even more impressive than it would otherwise be.

+Nice graphics and nice visual effects
+An interesting, dark world to explore with a good atmosphere
+Well designed world, enemies, loot etc.
+Simple to use/navigate UI
+Wide variety of enemies to battle
+Five classes to choose from, each with an extensive skill tree
+You don't have to stick to one class, after level 10 you can unlock skills from a secondary class as well
+Day & Night cycle
+Satisfying boss fights throughout
+Intense combat where you're often fighting a mob of higher level enemies
+You can decide what levels of loot you want to be able to see so if you want to you can just ignore low level loot
+There is a constitution system (basically a second health bar) which fills up your health bar out of combat but requires food or special item drops to replenish it
+Items can be found in loot drops which can be combined with weapons or armour to give them special bonuses, using three of the same item gives a greater bonus
+Lots of side quests as well as main quests
+You can store items in a place which is shared among all of your characters so if you get a good drop for a different build you can use it on another character
+Enemies scale to you when you leave an area but only up to a certain point, the early areas won't pass level 10/11 for example so there are places where it is easier to grind
+Can be enjoyed alone or with friends

+/-You have to do a lot of grinding to be able to get through upcoming areas, personally I'm not a huge fan of grinding but I know that's a big part of ARPGs and most people don't mind
+/-No manual save system but the game regularly autosaves so this isn't really an issue

-No quest markers except for stars to show you people who give you quests, this means that if you're looking for a specific location for a quest chances are you're gonna spend a long time searching for it
-Shop prices seem a bit too high and the difference between buy prices and sell prices for items is huge, for example the buy price for scrap is ~800 iron bits whereas the sell price is ~30 iron bits

Worth a mention:
-Obviously it is still in development so not everything is in the game yet, for example the end of the third chapter of the story

Verdict:

An excellent isometric ARPG with nice graphics, great world design, intense combat, lots of quests and a great deal of potential. This is a must buy for ARPG fans.

To start off I just wanted to say that I can't believe that this game is only been developed by eight people. The quality of this game is just....... amazing. I dont have a lot of hours in the game at the moment since, I bought the game to take a break from tf2 now and again, but i most definitely intend to take this game past the 200 hour mark. Lets start with the basics, The graphics are offcourse not "next gen" or "breath taking", however they are still really nice and have a really good solid apocalyptic feel. I've noticed that many people think that since two of the devs are from ironlore, Grim Dawn is most probably just a reskin of TQ, however this is most definitely not the case. Both GD and TQ if compared may have some simmilarities however their both very different games.

Now that ive gotten that and the graphics out of the way time to move onto the gameplay. Ill start of with the skill trees, the skill trees in GD most definitely give you a seriously wide variety of choice and this is taken even further with the duel class system. You can either choose to make a pure build for just lets say, soldier or you can choose to assign skill points to maybe soldier and Demolitionist. There is a good solid combat sysytem that makes you feel powerful even from the earlly stages of the game(low levels). I dont have much to say about the combat system since its fairlly simple but really good. Moving onto LOOOOOT, a very important subject. Ill start off by saying that theres plenty off it in GD. I definitely recommend playing on veteran difficulty, not only does veteren make the game more fun (well atleast for me) but you will get more of the "GUD LOOT" the chances of epics and rares dropping are increased significantly. Also very importantly the armor designs look really cool :). One thing i love about the loot in GD is how you receive it once you defeat a boss. Instead of the loot instantly falling off a certain dead boss or champion, a "SPOILS" orb will appear that youll have to break open, and each time it kind off feels like opening a present in a way, you might get complete trash..... or you might get a epic. (and it's a awesome feeling if you do get a epic).

Finally moving onto multiplayer at the moment the loot is still shared so try not to play with greedy people however if someone is hosting a server they can choose to turn on instanced loot or not (and yes some people actually turn off the option -_-). There is PvP, but unfortuantely i haven't experienced that aspect of the game yet. Other than that at the moment there isn't to much of a difference between multiplayer and singleplayer.

Finally i would like to say that this game is just brilliant even though its still in early access and if youre an avid ARPG player this is a must-buy. Score out of ten- 8.5/10 once the full game is realeased this score will probbably increase :).

This is a review as of Build 24

If you're looking for a nostalgic ARPG experience good for at least one 15-20 hr playthough, this game will likely satisfy you.

If you're looking to repeat the experience, you have to be willing to accept that there are some things that are not up to current standards. Some or all of these things may bother you, I know that not all of them bother me.

The map is 95% the same every single game. The overall structure is exactly the same but they will put obstructions on random sections of path so that you can't always run the exact same path every single game. Along with this, I'm *pretty* certain that monster spawns are the same every game, with maybe hero/champion/unique spawns occurring in a semi-random fashion.

Monster spawns are sometimes triggered by your walking over a, well, trigger point. These are usually only configured assuming you are coming from one direction. This means rather than spawning when you get close to a point, monsters will frequently end up spawning behind you if you like to explore 100% of a region. This feels really sloppy and gets tedious as it forces you to double back if you want to kill everything.

Monsters scale to your level (with certain seeming minimum and maximum levels) and monsters that spawn as a result of certain actions (either map triggers or summons by other monsters) will spawn at different levels than the already present monsters. This can result in a monster multiple levels higher than you (I've seen ones up to ~10 levels higher than me) spawning things your level, or things way lower level than you (up to ~20 levels lower) spawning things at your level.

While most of the skill points you spend can be unspent for an extremely reasonable amount, there are a relatively large number that can't be retrieved. You can get ~120 skill points currently, of which you may end up sinking 50-75 into places that you can't get them back from. When the level cap increases, I expect this to become less of an issue but currently it can lead to lots of regret.

At each level up you obtain 1 "stat point" to be spent on one of three stats. This might lead you (me) into believing this game was set up like Dungeon Siege to a certain point with full armor sets based on one or two of these stats. This would be a lie. Almost all armor ends up requiring a certain amount of physique (read: strength) and no other stats. Almost all rings/amulets end up needing a certain amount of spirit (read: int/wis) and I've never seen one rely on anything else. Some weapons require cunning (read: dex) or spirit, but most rely on physique. These stat points cannot be reallocated. Sadface.

This game is kind of oldschool in that the concept of utility skills/powers does not really exist. If you need healing, you will be expected to rely mainly on potions or out of combat things. If you want to move faster or drain health, that will mostly be due to your gear. From my observation, only the two melee trees (soldier/nightblade aka fighter/rogue) have things like this. As a result, almost all of the builds I see on here use one or both of these trees or try to avoid any situation in which they would take damage.

I haven't tried it but don't feel like there is currently a viable "pet" class. The Occultist tree gives 2 pets, but you can only summon 1 copy of each (from what I've seen) which is pretty thin for a pet class.

I think I've complained a lot and you're probably wondering why I've still given a positive review (if you're still reading). That would mostly be due to the potential for future development. Most/all of the things I've mentioned could be fixed with post-release player created workshop mods or by the dev team in a future Build.

As it stands, I believe the EA game is worth $10-15 to me, and that's what I paid at some point this was on sale. If you're hard up for a new Torchlight/Diablo/TQ/etc fix, this might be worth more to you. Asked right now, I don't think I'd pay $25.

If I really needed a fix though, I'd probably pay the $25.

Plays like Diablo 3 (a good thing!) and has a grittier art style, more akin to Path of Exile but with better and smoother effects, animations, and world design. Tons of loot to sift through, and an endless supply of monsters to smash.

Needs some polishing yet, but this game is VERY promising, very challenging, and a ton of fun!

i really enjoyed so far the gothic scifi theme runing the a ranged gun or hitting with a flaming sword while throwing flaming canisters reminds me of a more dark version of the world thundar the barbarian seemed to live in i enjoy the quest system tho i would like to see alot more item varation in loot drops to many of the same white items gets boring and the 2 bosses that i hit were pretty fun overall alot more fun than poe not as wastefuly over done as d3 and thankfully not as cornball as torchlight as the few comparisions to titanquest this games is a lot better with tons of class details to play with and change I would HIghly reccomend this game so far 10/10 ymmv

For an early access game, it is really quite polished game.
It is really quite like Titan's quest... only substitute ancient cultures with steampunk and zombies... All of the classes are really interesting, game looks and plays really nice...

Changes from Titan's quest:
- added crafting system (nothing too elaborate... kinda like Diablo 3?)
- the pacing is much better
- no spartans so far

The only problem I found is slight problem with synchronisation from time to time... but nothing really gamebreaking.
I will probably edit this after I put more than 8.4 hours into it

I haven't played that much, but uh if you like ARPGs, Lootathons, Diablolikes, etc., this is a good one of those! Nice artstyle fun enough combat. Only problem is that it's early access and unfinished. I only got it because it was on sale otherwise I would have waited. If you're interested in supporting a neat game, buy it now!

My first run took me 38.7 hours to complete my first run through but i usually wander around and do sidequests so take that into consideration
