Why Early Access?

“We started as a two-man team and eventually grew to six, then eight after a successful Kickstarter and alpha release. Our early vision was to create a fairly small, somewhat rough game as a way to get our studio off the ground with very limited resources. Kickstarter and Early Access have allowed us to expand greatly on that original vision and to create a larger game with more unique features. We continue to use Early Access as a laboratory in which to test and grow Grim Dawn, with continual player feedback and the flexibility to add new features and spend time refining the game in a way that typical publisher funded development doesn't allow.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We hope to have all core content completed by mid 2015. Beyond that, we will take as long as necessary to fix, polish, optimize and make adjustments based on community feedback until the game feels ready to call complete. We're estimating final release before the end of 2015 but ultimately, we'll work as long as it takes to get it right.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Grim Dawn is already about 80% complete.

The only major feature not yet in, is another layer of skill development we're calling "Devotions," which will be revealed in more detail later on. Beyond that, you can expect more items, more enemies, more environments and more quests.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core gameplay is well established and fun, there are 5 fully complete classes (which you can dual class to create tons of hybrid builds), hoards of loot to collect and an expansive world to explore with many secrets.

Most players are reporting between 10 to 20 hours or more for a first-time play-through. The finished game will probably end up around 15-30 hours for a first-time play-through depending on how much of the content you clear. Since we try to avoid "gating" the player and allow players to access Act 2 even before they've completed Act 1, it is possible to run though the game quickly, skipping a lot of content but there are also huge side-areas and secret areas, so clearing everything will take much longer.

Most players are reporting little to no crashing with only minor bugs. Multiplayer is available and most players are reporting a smooth experience. We continue to work on optimizing performance and expect to release the first significant optimizations in the first quarter of 2015. More performance optimization will occur toward the end of development as programmers finish feature work and are able to focus more on it.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We haven't made a final decision but currently it is expected that the launch price will be the same as Early Access.”

  • Descend into special "challenge dungeons" where enemies levels increase as you progress.
  • Dynamic Weather brings the world to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rain showers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
  • Collect item recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of amazing power.
  • The ability to spend money to reclaim skill points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed decisions that could permanently gimp a character.

Development Roadmap

You can currently play through Acts 1, 2 and the first chapter of, up to character level 40. There are multiple large, higher-level secret areas to be found beyond the main story content. While content is still in development, the core gameplay is already fairly robust and a lot of fun. There is quite a lot of replay value between trying different classes / builds and collecting items. We're still refining gameplay based on player feedback, adding requested features and working to deliver the remaining content and additional slated features. Most players report that the current build is fairly stable with mostly mild bugs and we're always working to fix bugs as they come up. Here is some of the stuff we plan to roll out in the coming months:

    We expect the final game will provide about 30-40 hours for a first-time play-through on normal difficulty, depending on level of exploration / clearing. This is our first game as a studio and we intend for Grim Dawn to be a continuing franchise, not just a one-off game. So it is important that we put in the time and effort to create something we're proud of, that will help us to earn a loyal fanbase for the future. This is one of the best games I've played in a while and it's early access! I got hooked on this game hard. The graphics, sound, abilities, combat, inventory management all fantastic. The upgrade system for enhancing your gear allows for a lot of variety. I explored every inch of every map, hacking away at the endless relentless hordes of evil that plague the beautiful and varied landscapes. You start in zombie infested swamplands. Then you unlock the other side of town and it's like something out of the wild west. There is strong variety in enemy design.

The ability to open rifts (teleports) anywhere in the game is a dream come true for inventory management. You don't have to make tough decisions about what to carry. Just teleport back to town, sell stuff, and return to where you were. Monsters don't respawn from teleporting. This also makes tough boss battles easier. Sometimes I would die repeatedly to a boss, but a rift in that room let me return back to it quickly. Another great feature is that enemies don't regenerate health, so you can eventually whittle down even the toughest challenges.

A few downsides are that the grind can get tiresome due to the extreme amount of enemies standing in your way. They don't respawn unless you exit the game, however, which is nice for keeping track of where you've been as the maps are enormous.

You can't save the game, which makes it hard to play shorter sessions. If you start exploring a map, you're in for the long haul until you either clear the entire area or find a new rift. Otherwise, the next time you log in you start at the city and all the monsters you cleared on a map have respawned. Exiting the game removes any existing personal rift you left behind also, so no quick teleporting to where you left off on a map. This was the most frustrating feature for me, because I can't always play for hours at a time and would have to play something else when my play time was shorter.

Sale prices of items to shops is really low. Buy prices are really high. It needs better balance. It's not that huge of a deal, since the best items keep flowing from combat loot and treasure chests.

I also felt we don't get enough points to boost our skills each level. The game boasts combining two classes but it takes around 40 skill points just to cap out tier 1 abilities in one class. You only get 3 points per level. So you have to sacrifice boosting your main class just to scratch the surface of the second class.

I pointed out a handful of downsides, but it is early access. It's in incredible shape for an EA title, most of which we all know aren't that well off. I highly recommend supporting the game. I played 42 hours before I ran of content as of May 4. New content is coming soon according to the developer notes. In the meanwhile I started playing Titan Quest, an older game from the same creator. I just can't get enough!

From the guys who were involved in Titan Quest, ARPG at its finest. I have well over 2000 hours in Diablo 3, But with the latest update to Grim Dawn I can see that changing and spending more hours in GDawn. Very fun, easy to get into, loot mania ARPG.

Great setting, dark gloomy gothis setting, storyline is quite good, abundance of loot drops to keep the avid loot hoarder in us all. Totally enjoy the character customization with classes, skills and gear.

If you like ARPG, Grab Grim Dawn. You wont be disappointed :)

In the summer of 2000, a new era in video gaming dawned.
Diablo 2 was launched. Blizzard was in their prime.
The game was excellent and a year later they improved on an already polished product with the release of Lord of Destruction.
Video gaming was never the same.
Since then we have had many attempts on carrying the flame of D2:LoD.
Torchlight honorably carried on the genre the best it could.
And when D3 was announced, I got aboard the hype train and road it to it's fiery crash.
It wasn't D2:LoD.
It didn't feel like a successor.
Disappointment was rife.

Later that same year, Torchlight 2 released.
The balance in the genre was secured. The gameplay was solid, if not a tad too fast-paced.
But with the disappointment that was D3, I greedily ate up all it had to offer.

And now, we are here.
There's a new dawn in this genre.
It is a Grim Dawn.
And grim has never been so good before.

I do not want to give the impression that this game merely plays off the nostalgia from franchises before.
Those at Crate Entertainment picked up the baton from other games and ran off in their own direction.
The influence is clearly there and is masterfully done. But, being an early access game, they could take feedback from the community of players, and mold it into something we've always wanted.

Another game to take the mantle of D2:LoD, and raise it to new heights.

This is a review as of Build 24

If you're looking for a nostalgic ARPG experience good for at least one 15-20 hr playthough, this game will likely satisfy you.

If you're looking to repeat the experience, you have to be willing to accept that there are some things that are not up to current standards. Some or all of these things may bother you, I know that not all of them bother me.

The map is 95% the same every single game. The overall structure is exactly the same but they will put obstructions on random sections of path so that you can't always run the exact same path every single game. Along with this, I'm *pretty* certain that monster spawns are the same every game, with maybe hero/champion/unique spawns occurring in a semi-random fashion.

Monster spawns are sometimes triggered by your walking over a, well, trigger point. These are usually only configured assuming you are coming from one direction. This means rather than spawning when you get close to a point, monsters will frequently end up spawning behind you if you like to explore 100% of a region. This feels really sloppy and gets tedious as it forces you to double back if you want to kill everything.

Monsters scale to your level (with certain seeming minimum and maximum levels) and monsters that spawn as a result of certain actions (either map triggers or summons by other monsters) will spawn at different levels than the already present monsters. This can result in a monster multiple levels higher than you (I've seen ones up to ~10 levels higher than me) spawning things your level, or things way lower level than you (up to ~20 levels lower) spawning things at your level.

While most of the skill points you spend can be unspent for an extremely reasonable amount, there are a relatively large number that can't be retrieved. You can get ~120 skill points currently, of which you may end up sinking 50-75 into places that you can't get them back from. When the level cap increases, I expect this to become less of an issue but currently it can lead to lots of regret.

At each level up you obtain 1 "stat point" to be spent on one of three stats. This might lead you (me) into believing this game was set up like Dungeon Siege to a certain point with full armor sets based on one or two of these stats. This would be a lie. Almost all armor ends up requiring a certain amount of physique (read: strength) and no other stats. Almost all rings/amulets end up needing a certain amount of spirit (read: int/wis) and I've never seen one rely on anything else. Some weapons require cunning (read: dex) or spirit, but most rely on physique. These stat points cannot be reallocated. Sadface.

This game is kind of oldschool in that the concept of utility skills/powers does not really exist. If you need healing, you will be expected to rely mainly on potions or out of combat things. If you want to move faster or drain health, that will mostly be due to your gear. From my observation, only the two melee trees (soldier/nightblade aka fighter/rogue) have things like this. As a result, almost all of the builds I see on here use one or both of these trees or try to avoid any situation in which they would take damage.

I haven't tried it but don't feel like there is currently a viable "pet" class. The Occultist tree gives 2 pets, but you can only summon 1 copy of each (from what I've seen) which is pretty thin for a pet class.

I think I've complained a lot and you're probably wondering why I've still given a positive review (if you're still reading). That would mostly be due to the potential for future development. Most/all of the things I've mentioned could be fixed with post-release player created workshop mods or by the dev team in a future Build.

As it stands, I believe the EA game is worth $10-15 to me, and that's what I paid at some point this was on sale. If you're hard up for a new Torchlight/Diablo/TQ/etc fix, this might be worth more to you. Asked right now, I don't think I'd pay $25.

If I really needed a fix though, I'd probably pay the $25.

If you loved the adventure and grittiness of Path of Exile gave, with other RPG elements taken from Diablo III and Torchlight 2, you will love this. Bear in mind it's still in early access, but developers plan to release the full version later this year (Q4), so buy it then! Worth every penny spent!

Easily the best early access game I have ever played. Why? Because right from the initial load screen it plays and feels like a complete game. The only thing "early" about this game is that is incomplete; you can only progress so far through the world.

All in all, a great action RPG.

If you liked Titan Quest then you'll like this.

Been in early access for a while now but the developers are always communicating constantly with their followers and have put many so called AAA developers to shame with the amount of work and community support they have shown over the years.

Damn fine game, good music and skill trees. The only complaint that I have is that the game is way to easy. Maybe it'll be adjusted at a later time. The atmosphere of the game reminds me of Diablo 1. Well worth the price.

For an early development game it is really good!, if you enjoyed Titan Quest then you will definitely like Grim Dawn!

Pros
- You can choose two skill class paths
- A nice reputation system where you gain perks and discounts the higher you are liked by a certain faction
- Nice clean graphics and runs well
- Auto sort mechanic in inventory to ease clutter

Cons
- You run out of energy/spirit quickly
- No character creation.

If you enjoy ARPG's do yourself a favor and pick this title up!!

Even in Early Access it's an excellent game that just keeps getting better. It's about 75% done, so there is plenty to enjoy in game right now. The dev team which also made Titan Quest, are very interactive with the community and are really putting a lot of AAA studios to shame with their quality.

Early Access Build 25 review!

This is the best ARPG to date. Maybe PoE will be on pair with it once it releases act 4 and fixes a lot of the problems it has.
Grim Dawn offers a very fluid combat, great class selection, motivating item-hunt (better than D3 or PoE!) a lot and LOT of builds to develop, factions, a veteran-mode, really good crafting and a lot of stuff that just waits to be found out.

The world itself is static and not randomly generated which origins from titan quest and has its advantages. Even if the story is not yet complete and the level is capped at 40 (around 75 in the final release) there is so much to do once you reached the cap! I suggest every fan of arpgs to try it out at once!

If you liked titan quest and also enjoy post apoc styled games this one is a must. TL;DR Good buy for the price especially for dungeon crawl rpg lovers.

Pros

1: High amount of item slots on your character (even a rune stone slot and a badge slot!)
2: Large skill point system, think titan quest for how skill progression is
3: Music is nice, helps set a mood without being overly loud or blaring
4: Combat is easy to get into, but at the same time bosses can be tough
5: Decent graphics and able to play on high and medium end computers
6:Not that expnsive or the content you're buying, and frequent updates and patching
7:Skill retraining (for a in game currency fee) to help in case you need a mulligan on skills you've chosen.
8:A lovely selection of attainable loot that you can equip into your items to give a boost, and unlike Titan Quest you can put them in epic tier loot!

cons

1:Dialog with npc's is unvoiced and easily forgetable
2:Not much lore wise to help you understand the world, lands, factions, and history starting off.
3:Combat may be easy to get into, but it can be a bit stale using the same few moves over and over (esp when focusing on leveling one ability and min/maxing others)
4:The few times I have heard voices so far in game it has been very sub par.
5:Not many "secret" areas to find, would be interesting to see this expanded.
6:Patrolling the Mojave Desert almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter (sorry had to say it xD )
7:In game money can be a pain to amass, maybe either make items sell higher, or iron coins drop more.
8:Not a very good selection of epic leveld loot or set items, hopefully much much more will be added


All in all I find this a fun game, sometimes might get stale but a little break and I can get right back into it. Fun for a dungeon crawl, nice monster variety, decent skill variety, plus you can redo your skill points (though not attribute points) if you have enough ingame currency. Has a nice setting, the mood of the game is a nice balance between post apoc rough and tough rust, and colorful nature. Lots of items with randomized traits. Hopefuly while adding to thegame, the makers add much more item variety with epic level loot and crafting items. But I enjoy this game so much as a dungeon crawler rpg (one of my fav styled games) and hopefully for rpg lovers out there you will enjoy this game too!
