"Authenticating Forever" Fixed!

Hey Everyone!

An update on the recent issues people have been having with the steam version of King Arthur's Gold:

We narrowed this down to only affecting new accounts, which is why we were getting conflicting messages regarding whether it was working or not, and testing it with our own accounts was working when it wasn't for some users. A huge sorry to any and all of the new players affected by this!

This was caused by a bug in the API that was avoided by the previous hosts configuration, and hence became visible after the migration. It was not a result of the DDoS protection, the DDoS taking the API down, or any other speculation you might have heard.

The bug has been fixed as far as our testing has shown, and players should no longer have issues with "endless authenticating" or anything like that - if you do please let us know asap, and include as much info as you can to help us narrow down any new issues!

Cheers,
Max

Attack/Migration Update

Hello everyone!

Firstly, proof that things are not permanently down.

Here's the server list from the standalone client, with people playing and several active servers, taken ~11:32 am Monday 15th August, AEST.

Here's checking the same servers from steam to ensure authentication is functioning, taken a few minutes later.

We understand that these are not huge numbers of people playing minute to minute, but there is enough of an active population to always find a game, despite attacks.

There are people spreading word that the game is permanently down, dying, or dead. This is (thankfully) untrue. We still see hundreds of games are played across the official servers alone, with many more hosted on community servers. There is a very active community drive for new maps for the official servers. Some new modders have joined the scene and there is work towards an official modded server. These are not the usual symptoms of a dead game.

However, we are suffering ongoing attacks against the Game Servers, Site, Forums, and API*. Most of the time we are able to cope with these attacks, but sometimes a service will be down temporarily. Please be patient, and try again at another time.

If the game is down you can still often access the Official Forums for extended discussions, or the IRC channel (webchat link) (#kag on quakenet) for instant messaging. The latter can be particularly helpful for troubleshooting if the right users are online.

If you are unable to log in for an extended period of time, or if other players are able to get in but you are not, please get in touch directly with support@thd.vg or use the official contact form. You get personalised, direct support through these channels. We do not provide official support on the steam forums.

Perhaps most importantly - we are working on hardening our services against these attacks! In particular we do have general DDoS Protection for the site and most ongoing DDoS shouldn't be an issue. However, some attacks and exploits can still bring the site or services down temporarily and we are working with our host to mitigate these as they come to light. Our new host has been working very hard on keeping everything running and updating our aging site codebase.

We are still unsure about the reason for the attacks, but they certainly seem dedicated to causing us grief. Thank you for bearing with us through this trying time.

Cheers,
Max

* The API is used for logging into the game and providing the server list, as well as updating mods and serving forum avatars. It being inaccessible is the most likely reason you cant get in-game.

This game is essentialy a multiplayer game. There is a singleplayer mode, but ultimately it's just a little gimmick without any real value, and the true juices of the game can only be found in it's multiplayer. Is it a good game? Yes. So what's the problem?

The game is very fun, it offers three classes all with completely different roles, used in order to combat the other team. Well, it can be fun...

When it comes to games that offer a compelling storyline or an amazing sandbox for singleplayer, multiplayer might not be such a big problem, and so servers aren't that big of a deal. But seeing as how this game focuses on multiplayer, there should be a few official servers for a few regions like EU, US, Aus, etc. But when you open up the server list there's only one (or maybe two at most) servers from one gamemode, or two at most. The rest are either completely empty or from another region meaning the ping is rediculously high and so unplayable. You can play on modded servers, but I'm talking about the official servers. I get it's not that big of a game but I still find it to be a problem.

But then again, this isn't as big of a problem. What is perhaps this game's major downfall is the community. Again, if a game has a worthy singleplayer, then the community might not be an issue at all. But as you will most likely spend all your time in this game with other players it becomes an issue. A rather large one. You mightn't find any major issues with the community at first but as you play on it becomes more apparent. One issue is the community's dislike of 'noobs' or new players in general. They will often get kicked for mistakes evidently made because they are new, and on the topic of getting kicked, you will often times get kicked for the dumbest of reasons. Disagree with how a base is being built and try to change a bit? Get kicked for griefing. Start a chat with a teammate? Get kicked for spamming. And so on, so forth. The players often tend to be racist and intolerant if you disagree with them, again, sometimes ending up with you being kicked.

To summarize, should you get the game?
If you don't mind sitting around in singleplayer playing around with options and mechanics clearly designed for multiplayer, then go for it!
Don't find the above issues a problem? Then go for it!
Otherwise, no.
You might be able to pump some hours into it but you will either love it or absolutely despise it.
Now, this is coming from a person who has played this game pre-steam, in other words before it was released on Steam, so I would have played this game a lot more in the past.

Side-scrolling, base-building and base-destroying multiplayer madness with a surprising amount of depth - don't let the simple graphics fool you. Difficult to master - and a lot to take in for new players - but as you learn to contribute more and more to your team you're bound to experience many epic, glorious, hilarious, as well as frustrating moments. Worth every gold coin.

10/10 would be catapulted into the enemy base with an explosive keg in order to capture the flag only to get mauled by a shark on my way back home again and again and again and again and again...

Even with the dwindling community and wall glitching and people ♥♥♥♥♥ing about builders all the time this game is absolutely one of my top five favorites. It's a shame it's not more popular at the moment, but there are always enough servers up to have some good fun.

After nearly 700 hours of playing KAG I realized I hadn't written a review yet...

It's a very, very fun game.

The combat system is for me what makes this game really special. I have spent most of my time in game practicing knight combat. If you like fighting games such as Smash Bros then the combat here will likely appeal to you a lot. The knight has only a few skills, but there are a huge number of ways in which they can be combined. There is little better feeling in this game than going on a huge kill streak.

As the best games should be - it is simple to learn but takes many, many hours to master!

There is a small but very dedicated community. Don't worry about there not being enough players. It only takes around 12 players for a good game of capture the flag, or just 6 for team deathmatch. At the time of writing there are always 60-100 players online.

This game is great. Addictive as anything. Capture the flag or team death match modes. Mine stone, gold, cut timber, build elaborate fortresses, and traps, terraform, all in glorious 2D pixel-scope. The gameplay can be a bit mad to begin with, but once you get used to it, you'll have a lot of fun. Teamwork is essential! Great, great fun!

Loved Classic was a player for about 1 year until i decided that the ad looked cool purchased from the site,(wasnt a steam user back then) and been playing for a few years now. Im an Australian player however ive read the reviews by USA players... they're either stupid or lazy. My information for you is based on fact not opinion, ***The US servers are online and populated at specific times as are all servers*** whuch means you have to be patient and see when they are active. Please stop joining AUS servers when theyre almost full since you arent with us. The countries that would fall under an AUS server would be Japan, Papa New Guinea, New Zealand and a few others and when you do join ours please remeber your not in your house your in someone elses and follow their rules... Also ill generally insult your terrible country.

P.S. Its great and not really like TF2 since I kinda despise that crap, Yes its a bit like terraria, and simmilar to a fantasy or role-playing game one specific servers e.g. Storytelling or something like that.

US servers are deserted. It was fun for a while, I got my $10 of fun out it years back when people still played.

But if you're reading as a US player, don't bother.
