Cause of the Current Downtime

Hello folks!

Last night (or during the day for anyone in the EU), much of our infrastructure went down again. Most that went down is back online now.

We're currently still working to get everything back running properly, but since there's some waiting involved (and only so much staring at a black box you can do in one morning) I'm going to use the time to explain the cause of all of this to you, the players. Transparency is a good thing, and our new host has given the all-clear to discuss the situation.

THD infrastructure has been the target of a large, ongoing DDoS attack, of the order of >10 GB/s for some hours each day. This has completely overwhelmed our servers and taken our services out. Our main host for all our web infrastructure, who is a long term community player, host, and friend, is not able to continue hosting us as a result - it has been an incredibly expensive week for him and we are very sorry for the damage and expense caused.

However, we have negotiated new web hosting - which we were already using for game servers - and started moving everything there. Moving has been slow because a lot of the databases have to be restored from damaged backups, a lot of specialised software needs to be installed and configured, and the attacks have been ongoing. The attacker is definitely targeting THD because the attacks have followed us to the new host.

We have taken the option of DDoS protection with our new host, which has come into effect this morning, but that has required migrating almost everything behind new IP addresses, so there's a lot of reconfiguration involved. It also adds some latency to every request and costs money each month, but it's basically our only option at the moment.

If worst comes to worst and the attacks don't stop, we should be able to get a good service out anyway, once everything has been properly configured. Until then, only some services will be available. In particular, steam authentication is currently not available.

We've received no claim or threat or demand from whoever is performing these attacks. If anyone knows anything certain about them or wants to confess (and stop doing it), feel free to get in touch; however this is no time for a witch hunt in the community.

We ask our players to continue to show patience as we deal with this frustrating issue.
Thanks from everyone at THD

Infinite Authentication Update

Hey guys, steam-specific update at the moment.

Last night, parts of our system went down again.

I'm sorry to report that the part of the API that handles steam logins is currently unavailable. We're investigating what exactly has gone wrong there at the moment. Standalone logins will function just fine.

If you would like to play offline, you'll need to open up your steam apps folder and run the game directly (ie without the "steam" command line argument). Alternatively, you can download the client from the official site and run that (and just click play offline when it asks you to log in).

We're aware that the offline experience is nothing compared to the online play, but for steam-linked accounts this is currently the best we can do. We'll be working on getting the authentication fully functional ASAP.

We'll explain more about what's been causing these server troubles soon, at the moment our focus is on fixing the problem.

Cheers, and sorry again,
Max

Before I start ranting and raving about how much I ♥♥♥♥ing love this game, let me just say that I got this game for free from a key giveaway on IRC when the game came out (almost 3 years ago already? Wow).

OKAY, SO...

King Arthur's Gold (usually shortened to KAG) has no real story, plot, or anything. The only motivator to keep playing this game is the sweet, joyous burst of pride you feel upon utterly annihilating a sky-high, 5-block thick tower with a single keg, causing said tower to crash down and kill 4 bystanders (3 of which were on the enemy team, the other... oops), and destroying the very last line of defence the other team has, along with many of their shops. But this feeling could go both ways. You could be on the team who's tower just got rekt af by some lowly enemy knight who just joined the match. Watching the tower fall, you are filled with a burning sensation... The impure desire to wreak havoc in the name of vengeance upon those unworthy souls who dare crash your team's pride and joy.

Both situations are equally likely in KAG.

After playing (on and off) for almost 3 years, accumulating up to almost 300 hours, I have seen so many action-filled games. From fast-paced 1V1 in TDM (Team Deathmatch), to more tactical and long-lasting games in TTH and CTF (Take the Halls and Capture the Flag). Every match is unique and thrilling. You could be in a game for 2 long hours, slaving away at constructing (another) god damned tower because a turdnugget griefer decided that he would do his thing, or in a game that lasts 10 minutes because the other team is all newbies (which happens a LOT around Summer Sales) and you keep double-slashing your way through their pitiful defenses like they're butter.

CTF, TTH, and TDM aren't the only game-modes, either. There's a few servers up that use player-made mods to spice things up a little, from adding in old game mechanics that were patched out for some reason or another, to making everyone wizards and having a spell-slinging spectaular game. Speaking of servers, too, there's "Official" servers for 3 main regions. USA, EU, and AUS. These offer the most vanilla games possible, but they're still super fun.

When you first pick up KAG, you might not be too great at it. But don't worry; with time, patience, effort, and 294.1 hours of practice, you, too, can become a player worth playing against.

Pros:
-Multiplayer fun!
-Many official servers USA, EU, and AUS. They're usually almost full during the midday for their respective region.
-Lots of custom maps and mods, so the game never gets stale.
-There's always room for improvement.
-KDR doesn't matter. It's the contributions you make to the team that define how good a player you are.
-There's player clans, so you can find a clan and band together and sometimes go to war with another clan.
-KAG has an almost 100% uptime, from what I've seen these past few years. If they do go down, you'll know.

Cons:
-Sometimes the community can be a little ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Be prepared for slurs, especially in games with a lot of butthurt kids.
-It can be a little frustrating when you die a lot.
-The music is lackluster, but it's not a main point of the game.
-Transhuman Design, the company that made this game, likes to push KAG under the rug in favor of Trench Run, their new game, sometimes.
-I haven't personally experienced this, but it's a somewhat-common problem for KAG to lag the longer you have it running.

If you're into massive PvP battles, with many people in action-packed environments, KAG is for you.

Review + Tips

Pros
* Great multiplayer rogue-like
* Easy to pickup, difficult to master
* Loyal community, local servers always full in the afternoon (Australian Servers too!)
* Good Mod servers (Zombie, Naval, etc.)
* Addictive and particularly great in small bursts (1-3 hours a day)
* Great with friends or solo

Cons
* Wish it had a large community (Although you will always find a full server, so dw)
* Wish it had a Co-op RPG mode

Tips
* Be patient and learn (Timing/Baiting/Juke'ing is key)
* Jab, Slash and Double slash as knights
* Rushing in a knight v knight battle will probably get you killed, Juke and Time your double slashes (Hold down mouse)
* Archers can climb trees and shoot through shields at very close range
* Building is fun, observe from others on how to best build
* Hold F to see your inventory, Press C to throw items in hand
* As a knight, press space bar to quick throw bombs

I started out playing almost two years ago and didnt really fall in love until 800 hours in when i started to master the builder class. I played and played until the game became reptitive for me. Ultimately id have to say i reccomend the game though there are a ♥♥♥♥♥on of bugs they will literally never fix, thd loves to try to move on to new games(the fail that was trenchrun) and always seem to have enough people to vouch for their greatness(ie where they gave testers the game and then requested a review from all of them). There isn't much of a real community left, some of the admins are literally ♥♥♥♥, and dont get me started on the circlejerk that is the upper management of the kag community(if you can even call it kag's). Then there's the fact that the thd dev team is trying to masquerade this issue as a "server mitigation" when it was a ddos attack that shut down literally everything. Now theyre deleting posts on the forum or comments or w/e that actually tell players what is going on(because the truth is bad).

This game is extremely fun and balanced, and while I have heard of cases where the playerbase is rude or trolls other people, this is pretty normal in any multiplayer game, and it also never happens to me. Recently, I started getting back into the game and players have been really nice at answering my questions. For example, in a tooltip I read it said you shouldn't go around breaking and killing things, because everything has a use, such as, chickens, or bushes. I thought bushes were pretty useless and I hadn't even noticed them in the game. I asked my team about them and I was told bushes could hide mines (I already knew chickens helped you float when you jump while holding them.) The classes are well balanced, the builder being the weakest in combat, but actually extremely important. The builder has 3 hearts of health and builds shops for others to buy items, tunnels to get you across the map extremely fast, traps to protect your base, and your base itself. The knight has 4 hearts of health and has a shield which completely blocks the damage of almost anything it is facing, it allows you to surf across the ground and water when you face it down, and you can use it to glide by facing it up and jumping. You have three different attacks, which are jabbing which is the weakest and can stun you if you hit an enemy shield. If you charge your attack you get a slash which is stronger and I don't think it stuns when hitting shields, and if you charge for a long time you get a slash which if you click really fast you can follow up with another slash and this is often used in combat. The knight can buy bombs which you can use to siege enemy buildings, or kill enemies. It also has a use where you light it, throw it at the ground and aim your shield towards it, this will help you vault over enemy structures, and you won't take damage from the bomb if done correctly. The knight can also buy water bombs which stop fires and stuns enemies. Finally the knight can buy kegs, which create + shaped explosions that are huge and are great for taking down buildings. However, bombs and kegs, (except for water bombs I think) can all be thrown back by the enemy players, which can make them risky, although you can just hold them longer. Finally, we have the archer. The archer is the classic ranged class with 2 hearts of health. You can charge longer to shoot farther, and if you charge long enough, you will shoot 3 arrows at once, which is extremely powerful in combat. You have 4 different arrows you can buy from the archer shop. You start with 30 normal arrows which are of course used for damaging enemies. You can buy, fire arrows, water arrows, or bomb arrows. Fire arrows, set enemies on fire, and wooden blocks on fire, which can spread to other blocks and take down wooden structures completely if not dealt with. Water arrows put out fires and stun enemies. Bomb arrows will damage structures and deal damage to enemies. The archer can duck to play dead and can climb and hide in trees. The archer can also use a grappling hook to move faster and go where other characters can't. These are just the basic characters, but there are modded servers with even more. There are official server gamemodes such as take the halls, team deathmatch, or my favorite, capture the flag, and there are player created servers, sometimes using mods. I hope this review, which turned into more of a beginner's guide (sorry lol) showed anyone who is uncertain about buying the game that the game can be really versatile and has extreme amounts of replayability. Also sorry if this review was too long, but I had a lot to say about this game.

This is a good game! The gameplay is fast and chaotic, but the building is fun and tactical. I would recommend this game; the community however has some growing up to do.

Often new players are banned for "griefing" or accused of doing things they haven't done. The community doesn't care that you are learning the game. Contrary to other games, where other players are helpful and friendly, the community of this game will jump at the chance to ban you from the server for no apparant reason.

Tips to avoid being banned:
-play games in your region (to avoid being kicked for high ping)
-do not play builder as a new player (chances are you will be accused of "digging shops" or "griefing")
-do not mess with fire, bombs, or any other variation of

King Arthur's Gold can be described as a mix of Teamfortress 2 and Terraria. And it's pretty damn good.

King Arthur's Gold has two main game modes wich you can play. Capture the flag. And Take the halls.
In Capture the flag (CTF) you have to in co-operation capture the flag(s) of the other team and bring the flag(s) back to your own flag(s) to win.
In take the halls (TTH) your team has to capture and control all the halls on the map to win the game. At the start of the round each team controls one hall and there are 3 uncaptured/neutral halls on the map.
The gameplay of King Arthur's Gold consists mainly of building up your base at the start of the round and attacking the enemy team's base and defending your own team's base. However, how these goals are accomplished varies from class to class.

While playing King Arthur's Gold you can play as 3 Different classes wich are:

The builder

The builder(s) is the back bone of the team. He along with other builders is responsible for building traps and the main base for the round. Builder's can build all kind of sexy awesome things like ladders, wood blocks, wood doors, stone doors, stone blocks, spikes etc. The builder is mainly played defensively but can be played offensively.

The knight

Knights are the primary attack force of the team. They deal damage at close range to enemies with their swords. They can also block incoming things with their shield like other knight's sword attacks and arrows. They also specialize in explosives. They can use bombs and "Kegs" wich are big bombs wich with you can ALLAHU AKHBAR cause massive damage to your enemies! The Knight is a combat oriented class and is almost allways played offensively.

The Archer

Archers are the support units of the team. They are the squishiest class in King Arthur's Gold but they can cause damage with their bow with a wide assortment of diffirent kinds of arrows to tackle diffirent problems. These f****rs all have grapling hooks and they can climb trees so they are very agile. Archers can be played offensively or defensively depending on the situation.

King Arthur's Gold is a great team-based multiplayer game and I think that if you enjoy things like Minecraft, Terraria and Teamfortress 2 then you'll probably really enjoy King Arthur's Gold.

Really fun! In this game, you have 3 main game modes: Take the Halls, in which teams battle to take small buildings which can be built onto to make defenses or produce goods that make attack easier with one starting base far away from the enemy team. CTF, in which, you guessed it, you capture the flag (or flags as some maps give the teams two flags each) and if you bring the other teams flag into your base, its an instant win, not point based. This mode is similar to Take the Halls because there is a lot of focus on building and destroying defenses. However, it doesn't really ever reach as much of a scale that Take the Halls has because there is much less distance between the flags then there is distance between starting halls, and seldom for any small bases or defenses ahead of the hall with the flag, there is really no buffer between the bases like there is in Take the Halls. It is still quite fun though, but I personally prefer Take The halls. Finally(?) we have team deathmatch. Its pretty self explanatory, it requires little set up and can be jumped right into without a whole lot of strategy. That is alright though, because the combat is good enough on its own. The game makes up for the lack of set up time to really get anything done construction wise by putting you in amazing varying maps, many of which have structures that use water physics instead of being extremely stone towers and buildings so when something breaks, although it isnt quite the same as watching a massive tower crumble to nothing under you and having to glide to safety using your shield into a battlefield now raging harder than before, the suddent rush of water pushing people every which way and completely changing the battle is a spectacle all on its own, even if less impressive. If you noticed my question mark after final, that is because this game has AMAZING mod support. Fret not though, you wont have to go online to find the mods for whatever server you want, it downloads them once you click on the server and agree to have some small mods downloaded. This is basically the same way TF2 works with its mods. These mods mean more gamemodes, characters, weapons, etc. based on whatever server you jump onto.

Many video game trailers often don't represent the game properly. They advertise amazing cinematic battles, when really those moments the games boast happen so often they become common place are rare occasions. This games trailer doesn't represent the game well either. There are like 10 explosions in this video, any game of CTF without 50 is being played WRONG. And TTH, well i hope youve contacted your next of kin, because these battles last so long, not because noone makes any progress, but because there is always more progress to be made! Whenever there is a tower destroyed, there is always an underground route to be built to flank the enemy when they arent expecting it and give time to rebuild. Whenever a base is captured, the line of people seperated and picked off now respawn together, with a shiny new catapiult this time around! Every time a massive skyscraper of stone is finished off with an extra archers bay and new resuply buildings inside, a an explosive keg was just made and is now being transported through and make getting more shops seem a trivial issue. I love this game, its explosive, fun, and everything just works.

Not a whole lot of people play it now, but there are a reasonable amount of people online in the evening and in the day. Good luck finding a game at 2 am or something tho.

KAG is essentially Battlefield with building and it places emphasis on game knowledge and skill. It's immensely satisfying, challenging and very effective at inducing rage directed at your incompetent teamates. However the community may get annoyed at those who are new to the game and fail to perform well. Grab 1 or 2 four-packs on sale and gift it to your friends. I guarantee that you will come to hate your friends after playing KAG.
