"It's all piney. It's all piney. It's all p--" dead.

This is not a survival horror game. It barely qualifies as playable.

It's a pixel-perfect-clickfest.

What do I mean? I have died so many times, some because of game rules like hunger or attacks but many because of POOR DESIGN.

Whenever you chop down a tree or break a rock, you have a few pieces to pick up...but you gotta click so perfectly on EACH---AND EVERY----PIEEEEEEEECE...to pick it all up. God help you chopping down trees in--oh, I dunno--a FOREST. You have to swing the camera around just to get it all behind the other trees.

Then, I go to check the map to get back to camp to heal up because I have 7 HP left, come back from the map, click, beehive, dead. WHAT?!?! I wanted to move somewhere, not swing a shovel at BEES!

How about them spiders? Pretty easy to take out a few actually if you just dodge their attack and lunge back in for a strike.

---UUUUUUNLEEEEEESSSS----

You're fighting them in the woods? Ha! Good luck as your spear-wielding idiot admires the local pines while getting butt nibbled. Another death...another restart.

Sure would be satisfying if you could just use a controller or something...

It's like fishing, people mostly don't get why some of us spend so long on this kind of game.
It gives me that "empty box" inside my mind which I'd stare for hours, like waiting a fish to get hooked - like a meditation of some sort, of course until the world wants to kill me with frog rains.

It's a survival game. First of all, this game is dense, I mean very dense and tough. If you decide that you won't look for any guide and find out the game mechanics all by yourself, it's tough but you will have fun. This game demands your attention... you don't give it, you will die in a matter of minutes.

It's a roguelike game. Here're some really good things about the game: This game looks amazing. The art style is beautiful. There are lots of replayability for this game. You really won't feel the time passing. Seriously.

There are simply whole lotta things you gotta keep track of in this game at the same time and sometimes it CAN get overwhelming. But you will learn time management in the process for sure. LOL.

This game is brilliantly done by Klei Entertainment. I'm very late to this game. But I do hope everyone will try this game and have some quality times.

Survival games akin to Don't Starve are relatively rare, and when there is one, it normally isn't nearly as investing as Don't Starve, but why? Don't Starve SEEMS very simple to understand, you get food, you pick flowers, you make a shelter, you survive. Don't Starve, is not that simple. I still discover new things in it every play session, there is just so much stuff, it feels like a lot of knowledge to retain, but it just comes to me logically, even if it wouldn't make sense in the real world. Of course you could make a machine that throws snowballs on your stuff to keep it from CATCHING FIRE IN THE SUMMER, of course a massive Deer Cyclops destroying everything you've ever loved would mark the end of winter, of course of course of course. You begin to expect things like that to the point where normalcy is even more surprising. That's how it is for me anyway. I would certainly reccomend this game, and while it is a massive game and I couldn't possibly explain everything I like and don't like about it, I will attempt to go over the key points

The Good:
+ The progression of the game is brilliant.
+ The artstyle provides interesting juxtaposition with the rest of the atmosphere, especially when going insane.
+ The inventory system (as angry as I get with it) is very good, or at least very well implemented

The Okay:
= The soundtrack is one of my favorite soundtracks out of any game ever, so it saddens me to see how much time is spent with no song playing
= The bosses are well designed and fun to fight, but the will destroy your camp, and they come in seasons where you can't be away from your camp
= The characters are all interesting, but there are some that I simply don't like to use, namely Wendy.

The Bad:
- Nightime is often quite boring.
- The game can become quite monotonous (especially if you have eaten every gear in existance as WX-78)
- I have to be in the right mood in order to pick up the game and play it.

While it's not the game I can just pick up and start playing and have fun, when I do play it I find myself enjoying it overall.

well this game is about a guy who wakes up on an island and then his uncle says he should eat something. then you have to fight rabbits and eat them. to complete the game you have to find the parts to your uncle's magic cloning machine. then you wake up as your clone on a different island. turns out your uncle wanted to do it with you as a bonding activity. so he gets madder and madder as you keep making cloning machines. However, one cloning machine wakes you up in his basement and he is just sitting down sad because you didnt want to bond with him. then you unlock the door to his mead cellar. turns out, the air in his basement mixed with the mead and ruined it. HE HAD IT MAKING FOR 3 MONTHS NOW! he gets so mad that he just dies. then you sit in his chair because you think it's comfy. and you listen to the oldies on his sweet gramophone. congrats you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

The first time I played this game I didn't really "get" it. I ran around, I found some food, I died. Then I put away the game for a long time. Recently I decided to play again and started to realize just how much depth there is to the game. I've now played for hundreds of hours, I've tried streaming on twitch and watching others do the same. It has become one of my favorite games and I definitely recommend it.

+ Great playability, very challenging
+ Easy, self-explanatory controls
+ Addictive
+ Amazing soundtrack
+ Adorable character design
+ Their voices are musical instruments, how cool is that
+ They have bones in their hair, damn
+ WILSON IS A BABE ♥
+ WOODIE IS A BABE ♥ (love dem bearded hipster dudes)
+ Wes is precious, protect him at all costs ♥

- NEEDS achievements. Like, I survived an entire year in the wild, braving the cold, rain and monsters, I want to be acknowledged for that. Klei please add.

(jk, I can barely survive a month. I suck)

10/10 would be killed by a Scottish walrus wearing a monocle again.

Picture this: It is my first night and I find a lovely rock biome where I can get some gold for my science machine. It begins to turn to night so I put down a campfire and begin to mine, I hear the familar sound of a tallbird. I think to myself, "this is no problem I'll just avoid it by running around the campfire all night, right? Wrong. More and more Tallbird sounds appear and soon I am being chased around the campfire by 6 Tallbirds who are hungry for my flesh. Morning comes and I run down from my campfire to discover a Tallfort (a real thing) with 20+ Tallbirds. 20 Tallbirds all attack me at once.

11/10 would be destroyed by Tallbird orgy again.

Don’t Starve is a survival/sandbox/roguelike game developed by Klei Entertainment. You take on the role of Wilson, a scientist who wakes up in a strange, untamed land and must battle hunger, hostile creatures, and insanity to stay alive as he searches for a way to escape. To that end, you gather resources from the mundane (twigs, logs, flint) to the bizarre (ghostly nightmare fuel, exotic animal hides, monster tentacles), explore, build a camp, invent new tools and buildings, and eventually find a door that takes you on a journey to the game’s antagonist, the enigmatic Maxwell.

Against all of my expectations, Don’t Starve turned out to be one of my favorite games. On a first pass, it seemed like a pretty repetitive ordeal: spend 30 minutes watching a nicely animated character pick grass, then mine stone and gold, then accidentally annoy one of the land’s many, many monsters, and start over again. When I gave it another try, however, I fell in love. The repetitive parts don’t actually take up that much of your time, and once you start building up a secure spot for yourself, defending it from hound attacks and lightning strikes, and striking out to see just what the heck is out in the beyond, it becomes immensely satisfying. For those who don’t like slow starts, there are options to customize the world that the game generates (procedural, if that wasn’t obvious), and there are guides aplenty for those struggling with basic questions like “how do I not die when the sun sets.”

The gameplay is simple and rock solid. You have three stats (hunger, health, and sanity), and for the most part you have to try to keep them all up. You roam around, you gather resources, you build what you need to survive, and if you aren’t dead, you start branching out: you discover how to make new things, you explore, you learn how to tame the wilderness, and eventually, you find a mysterious doorway that shows you what the game is REALLY about. It’s dark. And if you die somewhere along the way, you unlock new characters that still give you a sense of progression and can present you with entirely new ways to approach the game.

The sandbox component of the game is definitely not Minecraft by any stretch, and it doesn’t try to be. If you prefer direction in your gaming, there’s more here than you might expect. The fighting is pretty simple: you equip a weapon and some armor, you click on whatever you want to kill, your character takes a swing at them, and then you kite backwards to dodge their attack. Rinse and repeat. This can feel a little clunky when you’re surrounded by assorted objects, but I got used to it after a while. Despite its simplicity, the combat can get pretty tense, especially when certain gigantic winter beasts decide to appear inside your warm, cozy campsite.

    Pros
  • Simple but surprisingly engaging (and dark) narrative, once you discover it
  • Taming the wilderness is very satisfying
  • Wide range of distinctive characters and heavy customization and modding options to tailor the experience

    Cons
  • No trading cards
  • Some tasks get repetitive
  • Bad luck can make minor mistakes into restarts

Final Thoughts

Get it if you like building stuff, taming hostile environments, and staying out of the dark.

Rating (Out of 10): 9

This game is HARD. You get thrown into it with no tutorial, no explanation and no help. Not gonna lie - I ended up looking a lot of things up at the beginning because I don't deal with these types of games very well. However, you learn quickly and it gets to the point where you don't care why you're in this other world, why there are shadow creatures trying to kill you, etc. You just have to survive.

There's a lot of item collection and the opportunity to build bigger and better defenses, offenses, etc. There's no real right or wrong way to play this game. You will probably die a lot but there is tons of replayability.

Simply Fantastic. Can't say I've seen anything like it in all my gaming years (over 20 years now).
In a class of its own, despite being a survival game.
When I saw the game in the Steam store, I watched the videos, read some reviews, then checked out the community and workshop. The art direction of this series has always intrigued me, I just wasn't sure if it was something I could get in to.
The game went on Sale this week, so I picked it up. It's safe to say, 'the rest is history'.

What an amazing little survival game! I literally have to watch myself with this one, because what seems like 15-20min ends up being an hour or two, without even batting an eye about it. The sounds, music, mechanics, map design, 'critter' art and designs, all of it are just superb, and unique.

The game runs flawlessly, without any hiccups, so far. The modding community for this game is alive and well, ensuring that this series won't be going away anytime soon.

I highly recommend this game to ANY kind of gamer, it will surprise you! I haven't really played the "Together" version yet, but I'm quite certain it will only add even more fun to the game, and without a doubt, some hillarious moments!

5/5 Stars for this one. Buy it. Play it. I'm not responsible for any addiction that occurs there-after. ;)
