"A audiovisual soundscape that is a joy to explore."

İncelemeler

“In a way, its lack of progression – the absence of skill trees, difficulty levels and save points – works in its favour; you won’t dive back in to mop up the last few achievements, or to climb leaderboards, but simply because you want to play Proteus. Because you want to open your eyes and be up to your waist in seawater, to walk to shore and wander through fields that sing. And that’s an itch only Proteus can scratch.”
8/10 – Edge

“I come away from it feeling elated. And that makes Proteus feel very special to me. It’s such a pleasure knowing it will be the same for so many others.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Its randomness and secrets make it worth playing through a few times, and beyond that, it's easy to imagine wanting to return to it just for respite from a stressful day or a noisy city.”
8/10 – The Guardian

“Proteus is beautiful, a beautiful thing. […]If it must be catgorised, Proteus perhaps is best filed alongside last year's similarly oblique but fascinating experimental games – Dear Esther and Journey.”
5/5 – Eurogamer

Bu Oyun Hakkında

Proteus is a game about exploration and immersion in a dream-like island world where the soundtrack to your play is created by your surroundings. Played in first-person, the primary means of interaction is simply your presence in the world and how you observe it. The procedurally generated islands are home to creatures natural and imagined, tranquil valleys and ruins with magical properties.

Key Features:

  • Meditative play: the responsive world and lack of any text or hints distils an essence of curious, investigative play, and rewards patience and immersion.
  • Dynamic soundtrack composed by award-winning musician David Kanaga follows the mood of the world and will appeal to fans of Boards of Canada, Brian Eno.
  • A distinctive 2D-but-3D graphical style with wild shifting palettes that sits somewhere between 8-bit videogames and early 20th century modernist painting.
  • Islands are uniquely generated every time, and although it's theoretically possible to see everything in one playthrough, no-one ever does.
  • Built-in "postcard" function encodes world data into each screenshot, allowing islands and discoveries to be saved and shared.

Very little content for the price. I usually enjoy atmospheric exploration games, but you are done with this in half an hour. Look at playtimes in reviews. Would not recommend.

Experimental games are great, don't get me wrong, but I would never get 10 bucks worth of enjoyment out of this title. The main problem is that cool-visual-effect aside, there is no novel or gimmicky mechanic to actually making this a 'game'. Some titles like Dear Esther and Gone Home get around this by telling a story, others through interaction. Proteus needs something to drive the player to want to continue the experience beyond finding trippy little sounds or visual.

Its cool, but needs more. Watch a LetsPlay and I am sure you will be done after about 10 minutes.

Very dreamlike, I got chills in a couple of places. The world was beautiful ind it's simplicity and was filled with voices and atmospheres. If you enjoy exploring, discovering and non-traditional games, I can only hearthily recommend this one.

A memorable, explorable piece of dreamlike atmosphere, Proteus articulates an essence of each of the four seasons with joy, loss and sadness.

★★★★☆

Immediately defined on the surface with its' soft, comforting colour palette and a distinctively blocky impression of an inhabited island, Proteus quickly captures the attention and brings to life a lush, fertile playground. Trees sway periodically in an autumn breeze. Snow gently falls to the ground as overbearing grey clouds loom overhead. Bunnies hop away to a brief tune as you approach - and soon chase - them. All of this accompanied by an indulgent and evocative soundtrack that perfectly accompanies you on your meandering voyage across this landscape. There's the faint sound of bagpipes, perhaps, as you close in on what appears to be abandoned castle. An almost military-like instrumentation joins you when you find yourself in what seem to be clusters of gravestones, positing the idea that maybe, in a day past, this island now inhabited by wildlife was also home to a human community.

What someone will actually get out of Proteus is ultimately down to the player - and whether this is a strength of the experience or to its' detriment, I'm not sure. There will be countless players who either don't care for the idea of a piece like this that all but completely strips back mechanical interference, or who just don't enjoy what Proteus has to offer. However, in the right frame of mind, at the right time of day, in the right mood, Proteus hits a nerve and relaxes it, eases it, and offers an experience unlike much else. One that is almost inherently and necessarily short, but utterly memorable and worth the attention of those seeking a very pure form of escaping to another place and, indeed, other times.
