Mirage Gameplay and Coverage from PAX East

Watch eight minutes of raw gameplay from Mirage: Arcane Warfare from its first public appearance at PAX East 2016. The new title from the creators of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare will release later in 2016.

https://youtu.be/VqQyMKHphcs

Recorded by our own team, in an Alpha version demo of Mirage.

Plus, check out PAX East hands-on media impressions of Mirage - to be updated with more to come!

TotalBiscuit

"It needs a little bit more skill, it's less defensive, it's a more aggressive combat system in general - particularly with the addition of abilities. The combat can be quite fast paced at times but it still has the weight of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare"

https://youtu.be/66L8k0Ebwks

Angry Joe

“You know Chivalry: Medieval Warfare? Take that, take the training wheels off, take the historical restrictions away and then just go crazy with it and that’s what you have here with magic and special abilities.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YklJpKCCpNs

Game Informer

“The premise is easy to love, and with a focus on blocking magic and melee attacks at the right time while finding an opening for magic spells, Mirage is more than just your average FPS with swords and fireballs.”

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/mirage_arcane_warfare/b/pc/archive/2016/04/27/mirage-arcane-warfare-adds-explosive-magic-to-chivalrys-brutal-sword-combat.aspx

Tom’s Hardware

“These days, you’re bound to see another multiplayer game with some variation on the first-person shooter (FPS) mechanic. However, Torn Banner stuck to its guns (pun intended) to deliver competitive multiplayer with a melee twist. Adding magic to the mix makes for new ways to take out enemies without overpowering the melee combat that serves as the game's backbone.”

Force Gaming

“Having played the game I’d say this is definitely a positive direction that they’re taking it in. They’ve got the the similarly deep combat mechanics [as Chivalry] but then with the extra layer of magic they can make combat a bit more interesting and add an extra layer of depth”

https://youtu.be/UuiYaBZdT-w

PC Gamer interview

“We’re bringing fighting game mechanics into multiplayer.”

Hardcore Gamer

“After every convention, certain games seem to stand out as the clear winners of a given event. After spending forty-five minutes with the brutal, intense Mirage: Arcane Warfare, it’s safe to say that players should eagerly anticipate Torn Banner’s next title. After all, there was a reason why fans kept on flocking back to hop in and get another match in rather than seeing something new.”

About This Game

Besiege castles and raid villages in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a first-person slasher with a focus on multi-player. Featuring competitive online combat that seeks to capture the experience of truly being on a medieval battlefield. Inspired from the intensity and epicness of swordfighting movies such as 300, Gladiator and Braveheart, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare aims to bring that experience to the hands of a gamer.

The game is skill-based and controls like an FPS, but instead of guns and grenades, players are given swords, shields, maces, battleaxes and longbows. Set in a fictional, yet gritty and realistic world, players will fight in fast paced online battles besieging castles, raiding medieval villages and fighting for glory in the arena with up to 32 players.

Key Features:

  • Deep melee combat system provides players with a huge range of responsive combat options
  • Adjust your attacks and blocks in real time with the mouse for precise and full control of the action
  • Wield an arsenal of up to 60 brutal weapons ranging from broad swords and battle axes to longbows and javelins
  • Dynamic objective system brings team tactics and strategy to the forefront as players batter down gates, raid villages and assassinate enemy royalty to achieve victory.
  • Use a variety of siege weapons ranging from catapults, boiling oil, ballista, battering rams and more
  • Vast, lush environments that transport the player to a gritty and immersive medieval world.
  • Offline play options that allow players to gain familiarity with the controls and gameplay before being thrust into the action.

The game is quite fun when you play with people who haven't had time to figure out how to abuse the mechanics. When I first bought the game it was during the free weekend and lots of new players went on just to have fun. Unfortunately there are only two server types 'Rank 1-14' and 'Rank 15+'. You get ranks by leveling which happens regardless of your skill, as aresult you soon come up against people who have played the game for hundreds of hours. This wasn't so bad during the free weekend when lots of new players were still around to balance it out, but afterwards you're stuck with lots of 'good' players who abuse things like dragging which allows you to swing an axe as fast as a short sword. The game in short is unbalanced, and needs to change the way players are matched (similar to counter strikes style) as well as remove silly features like dragging.

Can't endorse it. Just can't.

Let me tell you who made this game: Some guy who can't play shooters because he can't snipe and can't counter snipe. So he makes a game where archery is pointless. And Some of the game mechanbics are so busted in favor of melee that he can finally kill all those "snipers".

I wanted to enjoy this. But thank god it came in a HumbleBundle and I didn't pay full price. I'd be really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ about my purchase then.

Broken game play.
Just a senseless meat grinder for melee clubbaclubba types.
Most of the maps are poorly designed and immbalanced.

> Join dueling server
> Select the Knight class
> Queue up to fight
> Get paired with a new player, knows nothing about the game
> I do the crouch-smashing-your-head-into-the-floor gesture, as a sign of good luck to my opponent
> I can smell his fear
> See that he doesn't do the same gesture, I lose respect for this peasant
> I move to the very center of the arena, allowing him to make the first move
> He takes a swing, but block it as if it was nothing
> I then slice his head off with my axe
> I stare down at his headless corpse, hear and see blood spewing from his neck, his head rolls off to the side
> Queue up again
> And again, and again
> Keep winning lots of duels
> Next queue
> Opponent is a formiddable one
> We do the good luck gesture
> We both walk to the center of the arena
> I take a swing, and he blocks it as if it was nothing
> He then slices off my head with his axe
> He stares down at my corpse, sees and hears blood spewing out from my neck
> Whoever fights noobs, should see to it that in the process he does become a noob. And if you gaze long enough into the blood spewing corpse, the corpse will gaze back into you. - Friedrich Nietzsche

Pretty great game, just wish they would add public servers for people over level 15. I'm only recomending it because the first 17 hours or so are pretty fun, and I'd say they're worth it. Still have light hopes that they update it though

Dumb fun. Has been around for awhile so there is an established hierarchy of skilled players annnd at first brush it isn't exactly "accessible".

But! For something you can get into as deep as you like; as in you can pop in for the occasional quick, drunken match and it works fine for that. Or you can perfect advanced techniques for the various weapons (which are surprising in their technical breadth, esp. since at first brush everything seems to be limited to stab, whack, or shoot).

I'd say snag it in a sale though.

The coding is rather awful, gui is clunky and nonresponsive, graphic optimization is half dayZ, latency of servers is mediocre.

Gameplay? Outstanding. Swings have weight to them, parrying takes aim, timing, and skill.
There are a decent few weapons, and four main classes to choose from. Most visuals are limited to coloration of your tabard, and further cost real money.

An excellent game for the price, provided you have patience for the crummy gui and weird loading times.

This is one of the few medieval themed games with a big focus on melee combat.

The fighting takes place on decent sized maps with some general objectives to accomplish. Those are mostly kill the enemy team's king, push the battering ram towards the gate, kill peasants or burn houses. They are pretty fun for both teams.

Sadly, for people expecting anything realistic, it is a dissapointment. The actual skill of this game focuses on exploiting bad physics. The combat against "experienced" players is immersion breaking as they are using all the exploits possible to gain an advantage, all while looking downright silly at the same time (knights doing moves no human being could do). It might take skill to do it but it simply isnt proper swordfighting.

You could probably find some fun in it if you're not looking for a interesting spin on melee combat, while not focusing on the realism whatsoever, or you plan on doing some fights with friends.

Personally I cannot recommend the game. I bough it for 1 eur along some other games (humble bundle) and found it quite fun for a limited time, but at full price it's definetely not worth it.

if you asked me if i recommended this game when I first got it, I would have said yes.

but guess what!!!! it's a no now!!!

ok first and foremost: why in god's name does this game have the option to go 1st or 3rd person? To me, the whole point of the game was supposed to be a first-person melee knight game. But now people can go third person and have greater situational awareness in the midst of multiplayer. That's just dumb. Ya, sure anyone else can do it to, but it kind of ruins what the game was to me just so that I can (try to) play better.

for a game that focuses on melee, the game feels sluggish and slow. The classes seem unbalanced and i found myself playing knight the most even though he's probably the worst. There's something about this game just makes me feel like the whole thing has been dipped in really stale honey. it's kind of sweet and all that, but it's sticky and doesn't leave a good taste in your mouth.

Admittedly, I kind of suck at this game. so that's cause for further frustration. But pretty much the only people who are left playing this and the ones who are going to dominate the scoreboard, are the people who play in 3rd and know how to angle their attacks and aim their camera so they dodge things. It doesn't seem like skillfull playing, it seems like taking the baby way out to be good at a game. I feel like if they were to disallow 3rd person on certain servers (or altogether for all i care) they would lose the tiny player base that still dwells in this game. The Chiv devs are pretty muched cucked into keeping it in in an attempt to maintain these unfun players.

all-in-all it's a really fun idea held back by abused mechanics and a dying community, as well as some bad honey.

After breaking lvl15 it lets you into the other servers. Where people 20+ levels group together and beat on you and chuckle, it's not a fun game at all after a couple weeks, it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Worth what I paid for it, though.

It was good in 2013-2014.
But since 2015 many have begun to use methods to manipulate the swinging system. (reverse overheads, aka rainbows ; literally spins to do accelerated drags which make absolutely no sense in any way, and so on.) Some moves (drags) make some sense, and don't look like someone is literally just dancing with a messer, between 3 people, decapidating each one of them, with one move, while abusing the stupid animations.

I didn't want this game to be fully realistic, but some semi-realistic aspects and some fixes for this poorly designes system would've been welcomed. But, it was too late. They now moved on their next game, and will probably abandoned this one soon.

Quite possibly the most brutal gaming experience to date.

- First time playing the game
- 4 classes, guess I'll go for the one with the biggest sword
- Playing the knight when suddenly, vanguard rushes me with a polearm and I quickly bleed out.
- Continue playing and proceed to get decapitated.
- learn about different attacks and manage to 5v1 some people with a war hammer

It only takes one round to fall in love with this game. If a medieval bloodbath is something that fancies you, pick this game up!

This game is fun until lvl 15. Then be prepared to meet the masters of broken physics and hitbox manipulators. The fencing maestros can be seen bending out of shape and misplacing their head or limbs to other spots on their body just before they bring down their unseen sword upon you to take off your head. They have also mastered the art of insta hits and hits through blocks.
You may stay a while and try to learn young padawan, and some of you will "git gud", but I sense that the majority of you will quickly move on to a title that brings you more entertainment than this broken game.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is nice, the gameplay is mostly nice, the important thing is your abilities (mostly) and the game is fast and fun. The hardest thing is be a new player, you have the noob servers, but when you start the game and starts to play the noobs on this servers will destroy you. I recommend it, if you are looking for multiplayers medieval combats. at last, if you are a br players, NÃO COMPRA ESSA ♥♥♥♥♥ A NÃO SER QUE ESTEJA NA PROMOÇÃO, PROS GRINGOS DEVE TA 5 DOLARES ESSA ♥♥♥♥♥, PODE COMPRAR, É DIVERTIDO, MAS SÓ SE ESTIVER NA PROMOÇÃO.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, is exactly what you must be thinking, a Call of Duty with swords and bows. ¿Never played Call of Duty though? The idea is simple, recreating virtually a medieval battles (village invasions, attack a castle, etc.) in which you play either with teams or free-for-all jumping in a massive slaugther, and very accurately, meaning, you can accidentally send your teammate's head flying away if you are not careful.
Friendly-"fire"...hmm...friendly-stabs are quite the frequent thing as we humans are imperfect, makes you wonder how many people were probably actually killed on accident because of a badly-timed sword attack. Doesn't hurt to send a little "Sorry!" on the chatbox though! It is also possible some people who must have absolute almighty skill for all games and NEVEEEER hit someone, since in all in his life already knew how to play this game might be set off by this and start ranting and what not on the chat, ignore and keep on, it's part of the fun, all those little accidents. You'll get better with practice, promess.

While the controls is something you need to get used to, this game is pretty fun. Running around, beheading people, blocking attacks with your shield, cutting limbs, using the ballista, aiming well your bow. As I said the controls are somewhat difficult to get the hang on at first, it will take a few hours of gameplay to adquire the most basic bit of skill, but it is worth it. This is a game where there's no tutorial skipping. Feels really like a medieval battle, and no, there's no magic, demons, or dragons. Just regular people, with old-fashioned ye olde beheading swords.

If you are quite the wealthy fashionista, this game also has an in-game store where you can purchase other kinds of weapons and armor to suit your taste.

Is this game for you? Do you enjoy multiplayer battle games and want to try something different? Give this a try, specially when it is on sale (that's when I picked it).
