Just hope you to know: the pirated version of the game works perfectly well on Win10. I find quite a few victims of the official version of the game here. Maybe there's still a chance for you to make up for the unfortunate incident.

straight up doesn't work, and they'll never patch it. crashes immediately after it starts. don't waste your money.

An excellent game, one of the best RTS/RTT titles out ever. Shame it got all but killed off by Ubisoft just to give a better chance to their train wreck known as Tom Clancy's EndWar.

In case you missed the story of what happened to World in Conflict, let me give you a short rundown.
World in Conflict comes out in 2007 and quickly becomes one of the best received games that year. Gameplay is fantastic, performance considering graphics is phenomenal and multiplayer is better than ever (and that's with a great singleplayer campaign). Things are looking pretty good for Massive. They announce a expansion pack called Soviet Assault that would bring the game over to consoles and add the Soviet campaign into the game. For people who wouldn't buy it and instead choose to stick with the vanilla game, it'd mean free content in multiplayer. The game continues to receive constant patches and free new maps.

Around the same time, Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy's EndWar. It was a console exclusive aimed at trying to make RTS genre work with controllers (for that they went with voice commands). Unfortunately for them, World in Conflict was looking to beat them in that regard with their new expansion pack.

In 2008, Activision Blizzard came to be. They decided to close down or sell off some studios. Massive, being owned by Sierra, was one of the victims of that. And that's when Ubisoft came in. Massive and World in Conflict brand got sold off to Ubisoft. What followed this was a delay of Soviet Assault for unknown period of time and somewhat lucklustre support of new free content. The player base began to slowly decrease over time. EndWar came out on consoles and turned out to be exactly what it looked in trailers - mediocre at best. That said, it sold well at the time, if memory serves well. Eventually Soviet Assault was released in 2009, but at that point console support was dropped. The whole situation was rather bittersweet. The game got a few more maps in multiplayer and new Soviet missions that were integrated into the original campaign.

At that point, Massive went off everybody's radar. For the lack of a better term, the studio became a sweatshop of DLC content and assets for Ubisoft games as far as I can tell. The Division was their first own project that'd involve an actual game and judging by everyone's current reaction in Steam, it was a train wreck (which isn't particularly surprising, considering that Ubisoft was the publisher, and Massive worked with three other studios on the same project).

tl;dr You're looking at the obituary of a great game, courtesy of Ubisoft. You can still experience the singleplayer campaign, but alas the multiplayer servers have been shut down. The only way you can try it out for yourself is LAN games that get organised once in a while.

If you're wondering if this game lives up to it's great reputation with the RTS genre, it's true. I've always sidelined this game for years, expecting it to be a game close to others I've played in the past but after finally playing it, I can see why many RTS players highly recommend it.

Pros: The late Cold War feeling and "outside the box" gameplay style that it presents itself with is outstanding, along with the characters you'll get to know overtime and the support you're provided to even out the playing field when in tough situations. Its a game that goes farther in RTS gameplay for it's time or if you're not familiar with modern RTS games.

Cons: The game has some features other RTS players have seen before: Tanks dominating the battlefield late game (Can hardly use infantry before they're wiped out by support or another unit), AI typically acts like a child, and game equality among unit to unit fighting. There's an issue regarding multiplayer matches but I won't go into details. It's a hassle for some lazy gamers along with connection problems many gamers typically face.

Overall, great game. A true classic for RTS players. 9/10. Will waste support points to burn a whole wooded area with napalm in order to kill one unit of Soviet paratroopers again.

Love this game. I have two tips. 1) How to solve the black screen issue (actually play the game). 2) Play Soviet Assault not the Original.

First:

1) How to solve the black screen issue.
But to love it you need to get to play it first. You don't really have to play around with the code, text, or game files... or whatever some solutions say... I have no experience doing such things, nor did I have to mess around with that to play.

After looking around and a bit of trial and error I found how to get the game to start. i.e. How to resolve black screen issue. When you buy the game package as I did it installs both games. For some reason having both games installed doesn't work. All you have to do is only have one of them installed. So 1) uninstall the one you don't play, the remaining game will automatically update 2) and then go to properties on the one you play and verify the game cache. All should be good, at least this worked for me, and I tried it on both the original game and the expansion independently.

HINT: I have gotten an error message (graphics card or something bla bla) just when I launch the game, I just press the cancel button and thats it, never had any in-game problems, and the game runs perfectly. I have the game set up at max graphics.

Second:

You don’t need to play the original, as the expansion has all the same missions including the cut scenes and all. The only difference is the introduction video. The new missions are included in between the old missions, so its better to just play Soviet Assault from the beginning. As if you play the original first as i did, then you will have to either replay the original missions when they come up in Soviet Assault, or exit the game and skip them by choosing the new missions manually.

Hope this helps. This is an awesome game, still to this day its graphics (all on high setting) impress me. I love to bomb, artillery strike, carpet bomb... etc. the whole cities haha. I wish they would make a new one with improved mechanics & graphics, because this game brought to new graphic standards would be completely mind blowing.

This was a amazing RTS. The strory was pretty good the gameplay was fun and smooth. And you didn't have to wait for credits or whatever to buy units. You could earn points by doing objectives but of you are good at the game you might only need to use the starting points. But this game has a few bugs I found. Like for example when building bases on checkpoints it would build only one base and not start on the others. This can get messy on the story because most missions have you do that atleast once but it is a easy fix you just have to call a strike on the base which usally kills it in one blow.

Well. This is a game which a lot of people say is a good game for people who like strategy games. I think this is correct though there is no multiplayer for this game (it was shutdown) i purchased this game in 2016 and still for my £10 the single player campaign was worth every penny (The soviet campaign missions were also very good and added to the story) though the U.S. campaign is where the "beef" is.

You go through the game repelling an invasion and after some quite emotional events and charachter interactions get to a silightly less losing stance.

The Soviets oblige in tearing down that wall, the Fulda Gap is filled, and Seattle goes sleepless as Shilkas and infantry pour onto the docks. Take that, Seahawks. Explosive downpour saturates cities bleeding with columns of refugees. Welcome to World in Conflict.

It's war theater by way of artillery barrages and tidalwaves of military meat and metal, but the thing that really sets World in Conflict apart is the relatable human face that comes out, when a soldier appears in the cutscenes, who, knowing his chances of survival are slim, phones his stepfather to reconcile before it's too late.

It would seem so obvious to acquaint the player with some of the thousands of troops that he'll be sending into certain death as the game progresses, and yet, it's something that pretty much never happens in real time strategy games. Tanya from Command and Conquer is a lovely girl, but she's not like any girl I know. That kid calling home, or the Soviet colonel torn between his duty and his common sense feel a lot closer to home.

The game itself delivers highly polished strategy in wave upon wave upon wave of perfect carnage, full of the little details that betray a labor of love. I don't know if this is art, but I do know that Massive Entertainment were among the few true artists in the studio system.

Had Sierra not fallen apart, and had Massive come under the guidance of someone with more respect for the medium than Activision or Ubisoft, who knows what might have been.

Everybody wants to rule the world, but as World in Conflict reminds us, they usually manage to burn down a significant part of it in the process.

Alright, this is not only a review but a slight Tutorial in helping thos who are having an issue running this game, (crash issue where is goes black as soon as you hit the main menu).

First the review
This game is amazing, if you love RTS, this game is for you. If you love Cold War Era themed games, this is for you. If you love Military warfare games, this is for you.
you get tactical points for capturing strategic points to win tug of war style domination play, as well as when your units are damaged/killed or when you kill/damage enemy units, you gain more of these tactical points through killing enemy units rather than losing your units. you can also share these tactical points with your allies in online play.
now, onto what these points are for. You use them for a number of things ranging from artillery strikes, to laser guided bombs, to Tactical Nuclear Strike, yes you heard right! YOU GET TO USE A FUD RUKKIN' NUCLEAR WARHEAD, and it ain't no crappy warhead that hardly affects an area of the map, it affects a LARGE portion of the map, to use a nuke costs A LOT of tactical points and it doesn't warant a win, if you don't dropp it on the enemy in a way to decimate their force utterly, you just wasted almost all of your tact. points on NOTHING so use it wisely. it also creates a ground zero zone like a real nuke. infantry will die if they are not transported by anything through the zone.
next thing, you do NOT build a base, you call in reinforcements through a set amount of reinforcement points you start with and slowly gain overtime, you cannot spam an OP unit so to speak, you are regulated as you have a limited amount depending on the match setup, you can have anywhere from 4000 to (i believe) 8000 reinforcment points, you best unit for your role costs around 1200 points, and a unti outside of your role could cost EVEN more, so be wise in what you spend your reinforcement points on, also you are refunded a units reinforcement cost if they are to die in combat, but slowly over time, not instantly, this bring a nice balance to the game.
finally, the roles. There are 4 roles, Infantry, Armor, Support, and Aircraft. Infantry uses jeeps, transport trucks and obiously infantry, it is a key role for defending positions from aircraft and tanks in order to keep ahead of the enemy for victory. Next, Armor, this role is for taking and occasionally holding positions from the enemy, you use APC (Armored Personnel Carriers) Amphibious APC's Light, Medium, and Heavy tanks. Heavy tanks are your main Tank Destroyer, as their offensive ability allows them to quickly destroy Med. and light tanks, their standard attack is also formidable. Mediums, believe it or not, are your main Anti-infantry vehicle aside from APC's, as their offensive abily is a white Phosphorous round (it burns the infantry like a flamethrower, but from a greater range) and the standard attack of the medium is quite average, enough of these tanks can destroy heavy tanks if the enemy heavies are not careful. and finally their is the Light tank, this little buggar is your backbone, you cannot have enough of these. their offensive is an ATGM rocket so that it can have a chance at destroying its Heavy adversairies, its basic attack is good against infanty and enough of these buggars can kill mediums and even heavies, if you are good. almost all vehicle defensive abilities are a smoke screen, so they can conceal themselves for a retreat, repair, and attack again. btw the repair vehicle is the jeep, and recovery tank, support is the only one who can buy the recovery tank, anyone of any role can buy a jeep. APC's double as anti infantry and anti aircraft, you can also use APC's of yours to transport allied infantry in multiplayer THATS FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!
next we have support, this is your artillery, dedicated Anti-aircraft (SAM launchers and quadruple A's), and your repairman for vehicles, although repair for the support player is more of a side job.
artiller does what artiller does, shells dug in targets to weken them for an offensive, their abilities also consist of a smoke round for blinding the enemy or concealing your allies, and i believe they can send White Phosphorous artillery rounds to burn infantry out of houses and forests.
anti-aircraft, you got Heavy and Medium, light does not exist. Heavy AA is your missle launchers like SAM's, which work so long as the enemy aircraft flare ability is down, this AA beats medium in range, but isn't 100% reliable on unit damage. Medium AA is your ballistic AA, meaning, it shoots bullets, this AA's offensive ability is quite useful, it changes it for a short period of time, into an anti light vehicle and anti anfantry vehicle, it basically aims its guns at ground targets, which is nice if they snuck infantry in close enough to your support vehicles.
finally their is aircraft, aircraft is for destroying pesky units that are a bother, aircraft cannot capture points for a win, but are invaluble in breaking the line. all aircraft used by this role, are helicopters.
you have Scout, Heavy, Medium, and Transport. Scout has not offensive, but has a VERY large sight range, the largest in game in fact, and its "offensive" ability is infrared radar, it instantly detects infantry in forrests and buildings, very usful considering infantry is the stealthiest in the game and can get the jump on you if you are not careful. next is Heavy, this is your attack copter, it sucks at fighting in Air to Air combat, but will shred even Heavy Tanks in seconds, especially with its AT missile, offensive ability. next is Medium air, this is your copter hunter, it is absolutely horrible at fighting ground targets unless the targets are infantry without cover (FYI everything shredds infantry when they are not in cover) the offensive ability of Medium copters is an Air to Air missile attack, with a pretty quick cooldown, meaing, if you follow an enemy long enough after they used their flares, you'll kill em. next is the transport copter, use this if you want to help your infantry allies become a little more mobile on the battlefield, but be careful anything with a machine gun and AA missiles will shred a transport copter quickly.
if you don't get it by this time then i will say it now I RECOMMEND THIS GAME, BUY IT, LOVE IT, AND MAYBE DO THE NASTY TO IT, ok you can leave the last bit out. but this game is a hidden Gem, for an RTS it has a very strong emphasis on tactical prowess, you don't win through micro, you win by outplaying your enemy with superior tactics which is an AAAAAA++++++ in my book for an RTS.

now, time for the tutorial so you can play this game, it is quick easy and simple.
once installed, you find the World in Conflict folder in your documents on your computer, if it isn't directly in documents, it might be found in your steam folder.
next step, once you have opened the folder you will see a list of things named hopefully in this order

Savegames
Shadercache
Controller Options
Game Options
Hardware Test.dat
Megamap Options
Player Profile

the one that is called Game Options, open that. Once you open Game Options you should scroll down through the mumbojumbo you see, TOUCH NOTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I SPECIFY OR IT MAY BREAK YOUR GAME AND NEED REINSTALL.

scroll to the bottom and look for a line called myDX10Flag 1
change the it from that to myDX10Flag 0
once that is done close it, it will prompt to save changes, SAVE DEM CHANGES BUB!
and then, MIRACLE!!! MAGICALLY COMPUTER WIZARDY!!!! you can play the game
this turns off directX 10 (which is crashing your game) and forces it to run on directX 9
why is this necessary? because when this game was created directx10 didn't exist, and i guess a recent update they did, tried to make the game run on drectx10 but ended up breaking the game in its entirety. if you still are having issues then i don't know, this is usually the issue.

It's really great, comes with mods too, Modern Warfare mod, the campaign is so awesome. The multiplayer is... Okay.... But it needs a more active community and more cooperative one at that.

Overall I liked it.

EDIT: It's been several months since the World In Conflict massgate servers were shut down. Massgate.net was shut down too (my poor stats! I was in the top 300 players!)

This was a great game, it was wonderful, the tank battles were awesome, the attack helicopters were perfect, the soldiers have few times been more balanced in a Real Time Strategy. Never had I seen a game that was so satisfying and occassionally frustrating at the same time. I had some of my best moments here in this game. It was really fun while it lasted. So this will become more of a thank you than a review.

But thank you Massgate and Sierra entertainment for providing a wonderful game. This was one of the best games I have ever played if not THE best game. It was heartbreaking to see the servers go, and the website, and everything. Such an effort and such a result... Only to be trashed, one of the more tragic things I suppose.

And the community made one last desperate attempt to save it... Such loyal fans...

Yet it failed? I just wish that wasn't right. That the community handover was successful, that the game had so much more players before it was shut down! It's sad, at least to me.

Goodbye World In Conflict and Massgate! I will miss you! Hats off to you for providing one of my best experiences in games. Words will not convey how much I will miss this game.

A multiplayer focused RTS at heart, World in Conflict is a very challenging game for newcomers. Base building is replaced by managing reinforcement points to optimize the composition of your force, consisting of units from one of the four main doctrines: armor, air, infantry, or support. Although it is possible to deploy units from a different doctrine, it's far more expensive to bring to the battlefield. From personal experience, it feels as though some units are not very well balanced, such as Anti-Armor Infantry not feeling like an effective choice compared to the more versatile and cheaper Infantry unit. However, the off-map call-ins, called Tactical Assists or TA, are really in-depth and provide great dynamics to gameplay. However, bad players will have difficulty in spending points to use TA's, as the points are accumulated from performing well on the battlefield. Fortunately, you can trade these points to your teammates for them to use.

The singleplayer campaign is largely forgettable, with only a handful of touching moments, most notably at the climatic battle to protect the still-fictitious Strategic Defense Initiative, also known as the Star Wars project, from Soviet forces learning that the U.S. had nothing to protect itself against nuclear attack. The story does not go out of its way to fistpump "AMERICA!" like some other military games do, even going so far as having a central character being directly involved in what would be considered a war crime. However, the depiction of Soviet forces from their perspective is incredibly cliched and felt entirely uninspired ("[The Americans] shall know the greatness of Socialism!" ... or something to that extent).

Overall, World in Conflict has easy to learn mechanics but difficult to master gameplay (in the multiplayer field, at least). Anyone with an itch for commanding American, Soviet, or NATO forces in an alternate history Cold War setting should give the demo a shot.
