SCRIBBLENAUTS GAME REVIEW
IntroductionI do not recromend this game. That does not mean it is inherently bad. Please read on to determine if you would like this game or not.
I say this becasue I published a review of this game once before, and it received negative comments purely becasue I didnt like the game and other people did. it's your opinion. this is my opinion. That is all.
I aquired this game with a humble bundle
a while back and decided to play it for a while. I didn't get far, I will explain why below. If you just want my overall view of the game, skip to the conclusion.
Here are a few problems I had with the game:
it's fun... for a while... untill you realise that you have the ability to create and manipulate almost anything you can think of without cost. I beleive you can even make yourself invincible.once this realisation sinks in puzzels become easy and boring. after around an hour of solving a few puzzels and creating giant death sharks and evil cyborg's It became a chore to even continue playing. you really have to create the challenge for yourself and I don't think a good game should do this.
2.The ability to create almost anything
The way you can create almost anything is by writing in a magic notebook. adding adjective's to change how the item works. e.g typing in shark will create a shark. typing giant shark will make a shark that is giant. the problem with this is that it isn't entirely accurate. sometimes a word that you think is more powerfull eup being less powerfull than you thought it was. confusing? heres an example (this may not be the case in game but this is an example of what sometimes happens with other words): typing gigantic shark may be smaller than typing huge shark. This can be a real problem because the game does get boring very quickly. add to that some slight annoyances and you quickly grow to dislike it.
It's rubbish. at least in my opinion. It becomes evident that the game is designed for children. the story is basic and while puzzel games don't have to have a strong story, it really has nothing else to keep me interested since i find the puzzels childishly simple.
That was all the negatives, so here a few positives:
1.It's fairly unique
I for one don't know of anything like this game. it's mechanics are pretty unique and it has some good idea's going for it. i wish it had some kind of energy or mana bar that you spent on creating things, having a limited amount for each puzzel and infinite outside of puzzels. allowing you to mess around with the mechanics but adding more difficulty to the game to keep me interested.
2.It's a really good game... for children
As I have already stated the simple mechanics, story, aesthetic, puzzels and the fact that the main characters themselves are children, make it ideal for children. Infact if you ask me i would say it was designed mainly for children.
I really tried to think of a third positive to balance it out, but i really can't. but that doesn't mean to say that there arn't any.
In conlusion I would not recromend this game. if I was to give it a arbitrary score it would be around 4/10. However, if you were planning on buying this game for a child, under the age of around 9-10, then I would recromend it. i do think the game has some good idea's but i disagree on their execution. I would much prefer it if they did have some kind of balance so you can't create almost anything imaginable with no consiquences. like the energy bar I mentioned previously. It is comparable to Garry's mod in its ability to spawn anything in at the click of a few buttons, however how fast does sandbox mode on garry's mod get boring? quite fast, garry's mod has numerous gamemodes to enjoy, its also in three dimensions and allows for greater creativity when building things. For example, in garry's mod you can weld multiple items together and give them all different properties and allowing for more customisation. garry's mod also has a multitude of online modes to allow the user to create random stuff with friends, making it infinitely more fun. So in a way it's kind of like a 2D poor mans garry's mod, and thats not a bad thing, but If you plan on getting this game, wait untill it is on sale as I do not think it is worth it's normal retail price.
