New Soundtrack files, temporarily removed Korean Translation

Hey everybody! I've got good news and bad news.

Bad news first:

Apparently some new law has been passed in South Korea that requires all games sold on Steam that support the Korean language to be officially rated by the Korean game rating's agency, or GRAC. When I got notice of this, I immediately got in touch with our Korean fan translators, Team.SM, to see what the process would be.

Team.SM seems to be unhappy with the new law, and in an apparent protest have (politely) asked us to remove their fan translation from Steam. We will respect their wishes and do so -- the files will be removed shortly in a new update.

To be clear - Level Up Labs has no official position on South Korean politics, South Korean game rating policies, or the law in question. We're just respecting the wishes of our fan translators.

I do hope that in the future we can restore the translation, and if the situation is resolved somehow, we will immediately restore the translation files.

EDIT: If you were using the korean translation and now the game is crashing, the fix is here:

The Good News

So, we have always shipped the game's original soundtrack with the game files, but it was hidden away in your game files as a nondescript .zip file. With the recent addition of Steam's music player, we have pushed an update that will make Steam auto-detect the soundtrack in the music player! Check the "Music" section of your library.

Also, we have a major announcement coming soon RE: Defender's Quest 2. Stay tuned!

About This Game

Defender's Quest is a Tower-Defense/RPG Hybrid (Think Final Fantasy Tactics meets Tower Defense).

Defender's Quest tightly focuses on three things: tactical depth, customization, and story. That means no random encounters, no spikey-haired emo kids, no forced time sinks, and no tedious, repetitive battles.

The battle system builds off of tower defense, with individual characters taking the place of towers. Each character levels-up, learns skills, and equips gear individually, allowing the player to customize their battle experience and strategy. The overall game structure is similar to "tactical" RPG's, but with a real-time battle system. Game speed is adjustable, and commands can even be issued while the game is paused.

It also features an engaging, character-driven story written by an actual English major! The story strives to be fast-paced, snappy, and always relevant to gameplay. Events and dialogue explain things as they become relevant to the player, minimizing exposition.

Finally, it's got options and accessibility settings out the wazoo, so that you can have the best possible experience!

Don't let the simple art fool you, this game is really well designed and manages to be challenging without seeming unfair. I'm not a huge tower defence fan but this won me over very quickly.

Well, reviewing a title that is available for 2 years now seems useless, yet i'll do it anyway :-)

Judging by the graphics i wonder why i even bought it. Maybe because i like Tower-Defense-Games.
But i was suprised with this cute little quillet.

What exactly is it?
It's a TD-Game without towers. But with people. Typical RPG-People like berzerkers, mages, healers and rangers and...
And you'll keep your "Towers" throughout the game and they'll receive XP and level-up. You can even color them and give them names.
You move through a story with cutscenes, but mainly you'll fight waves of enemies with your party.

The good:
  • Borderless fullscreen AKA non-exclusive Fullscreen. Yay. Scaled to your resolution OR changed resolution. Nifty!
  • Don't like the speed of advancement? Change XP/monetary reward to 300%! Or 50%.
  • Leveling and outfitting your "towers" is a nice approach. You'll have veterans and noobs to place on each map.
  • Speed adjustment from 0x (pause) to 4x. Nice. Pausable at all times. No pressure there.
  • You can adjust your partymembers fighting tactics and even make them persistant (attack which target first, use high power abilities on lower foes etc.)
  • Beside your party you'll have your main hero that has misc. spells at her disposal.
  • TD-like you can play each map in different difficulties with proportional rewards. It pays to replay an older mission on EXPERT!
  • The way they make you "like" their facebook/twitter-page was really cute. I almost felt bad NOT to click :-)
  • Workshop! For those extra hours to waste
  • It has a real story with cute cutscenes. I admit to have skipped much of it, but for some it may add immersion.

The bad:
  • For some, it may possibly lack depth of strategy/difficulty. It looks more like a "casual" tower-defense.
  • Ok, to be nit-picky: The skills you're able to choose are too few. No big descisions to make, you're getting them
    all more or less anyway.

TL;DR:
Bought "Defenders of time" at the same time and it seemed much more promising. Oh boy was i wrong.
Kicked "DoT" off of my HD after 2 minutes and played this one for hours. Graphics is not everything.
This is a fun and refreshing towerdefense-game where you keep your "towers" and level them up. Also you'll
try to outfit them with better weapons and armor. I surely had my fun. Would be even worth fullprice!

As tower defense games go, this is a really good one! I really like that on each level you can change the difficulty from calm to challenging to frustrating - so I can set it for whatever mood I feel like playing in. And leveling up as you go, then going back with stronger warriors to beat older levels on higher difficulty really feels rewarding.

The story has some humorous and somewhat interesting bits, but it's a mostly simple backdrop to the tower defense that drives the game. Once you complete the story, you can go back for the more difficult story+ mode which adds several sidequests to fill in some blanks. It gives the game a nice bit of extra replay value.

This is one of the few tower defence games that has made me care about my towers, as a character. It can seems like a fairly easy TD at first but once you enter new game plus, battles can be brutal. Though with new game plus also comes a log that gives a slightly more relaxed, and hilarous, look at the characters.

At first glance, this is a decent TD.

Each map has dificulty scaling from brain-dead-easy to challenging-enough-to-keep-you-on-your-toes all the way to so-hard-you-will-have-to-come-back-once-you-have-leveled-up-more.

The story is more engaging than many RPGs and shows great humor.

The achievements are a decent mix of "collect as you go" and "work hard to get this".

The upgrading and customization of your "towers" adds a lot of strategic depth which is only hightened by the weapons and armor you buy/upgrade.

And then you finish the game and find out that there are achievements to play with just the story dependant heroes (Hero Mode). And the challenge increases by a factor of 7.

And then you finish the game doing Hero Mode and find out about New Game +

That's where the game really shines. Because not only is there a whole lot more story, greater challenge in all the previous maps, more achievements AND extra maps... there is also Hero Mode +

And then there are all the bonus maps...

The game is bursting with content, oozing challenge out of every pixel and spurting out humor.

No. Don't wait for a sale. This is not a game you MIGHT want, it is a game you can't NOT have.

PS: There is also a sequel coming. Oh, and a free HD version for everyone who has the game.

These are the kinds of devs you support. Do it.

Simple tower defense game. Very typical of the genre, not very remarkable at all. The game does add some RPG elements, though, and these can be interesting. I didn't find the RPG elements to be particularly impressive and so I felt like I was playing any generic tower defense. Nothing remarkably good, nothing shockingly bad. Very standard.

The game is actually pretty short. Storyline is not that rich as well as it's presentation. The main problem with the game is the fact it lacks a new mechanics, so in the end you will play just another tower defence with a tiny hint of "rpg".

One of the best tower defense games I've played so far.

Rather than a typical tower defense game that you can find around steam, they insert a few interesting RPG element into the mix, and it works suprisingly well. Each tower is actually a character and each character has levels, skill trees and equipments. Each character helps progress in the main stroryline, and the storyline is pretty interesting and funny at times.

Most importantly, the game runs great and destroying the waves of enemies with your smart strategic placement of towers/characters is satisfying. It has a lot of levels, multiple difficulties for each level, has bonus levels like endless mode, new game + and has Steam Workshop to add new stuff!

If you're a fan of RPG and tower defense, this is definitely a game you cannot miss.

8/10, great game.
