Flight "sim" arcade game that is definitely more arcade than sim. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I've been after a decent flight sim game that doesn't have a massive manual or learning curve and this has delivered.
I've not had much of an issue with the mouse and keyboard controls. When I crash in to the side of a carrier I have put it down to my lack of skill rather than the controls themselves. The missions are quite varied including dog fights, bombing runs, carrier landings, covert missions, torpedo runs, landing behind enemy lines, and I'm only at the end of the first act.
This is real "jump in the cockpit and away you go" stuff. Low on realism but high on fun. Recommended unless you demand a high level of realism in your flight sim games.

A bit more simple than "Heros of the Pacific" and "Secret Weapons Over Normandy", both of which I had to clear on the old PS2 without cheat codes, but it's still a good dogfight game . Actually I left the game for a while and managed to crash twice before taking off from the carrier in the Midway mission, and I had the controlls set on arcade mode, so I suppose that it's not overly simple that way, but the missions and objectives are more simple (get in there, hit the carriers with torpedoes and get out) . The local competitve and co-op play was a big selling plus for me . It has good war game effects - I would recommend turning your headphones down to about 30 percent when first jumping into the game for solo action - the engines and machine guns sound real good . Like other dog fight games, I wish I could swear back at that A.I. guy who's swearing at me on the A.I. radio, and hurt his precious little A.I. feelings - oh well .

It's an ok arcade flight game, but there is one mission where you have to rescue you downed wingmate and I tried several times to land the plane, but to no avail. It's a shame that a glitch ruined my experience. I don't have the patience anymore for this type of stuff. It's crap! I don't know of a better WW2 arcade flight game, but save your money.

Dogfight 1942... What a game!! Before playing this I checked out some of the reviews and there were some negative comments, mostly positive, but the negatives were mainly concerning the controls, lack of storyline, and unrealsim (one guy commented on how the game sucked due to the fact your bombs and torpedos reload whilst in mid air). So these are my opinions! This is game is FAR from a simulator, so if you're looking for a WW2 based flying simulator, this isn't your game! It's a fun, quick paced flight game based around WW2, from all different angles, Japan vs USA, UK vs Germany, and if you have the DLC, making the game a couple of hours longer, you can also play Russia vs Germany, and a mix of countries fighting in the Western Desert Campaign. The plane models are well made and look good, and the Ace camouflages are a good unlock feature and look amazing, and the graphics look and work perfectly fine, I even got some pretty tasty screenshots! The people who said this game is "too easy" must have played on the lowest difficulty, because the skill level between medium and hard levels are such a massive difference. If you like a challenge, then Hard is the difficulty for you, and the mission medals can sometimes be challenging to do aswell. The controls are easy on casual mode, but extremely difficult on the other 2 modes, and to get some medal unlocks and achievements, you NEED to use simulation mode. Really good game, graphics are nice, plays well, and would recommend it anyday, considering I got this from a bundle site, which I worked out that the game cost me 0.36p. (I got 8 games for £2.88p) 8/10

This game is basically an arcade game - unrealistic physics and gameplay.

I shot down more planes in the first three missions than most WWII pilots did in their entire careers - and that's not a brag - it's just insanely simple to score. No cockpit view, no stick support (360 gamepads are supported), and linear gameplay.

And it's a mediocre game experience - bombers show up and bomb things before your get a chance to fight them, so their is no deviation from the script - the story is a straight line. And it's not even a good story - one minuite you're the Pacific theater, the next you're in Europe - so, no continuity.

It's polished - lots of voice acting, and the graphics are okay, but it is just lacking. There are much better arcade style flight games than this. This one is just unremarkable.

Unrealistic arcade game for 12 year olds. The steerage is just ugh and the f2p game War Thunder is better than this crap in that way. HP reloading just like in those call of duty kiddies games, no real input about plane damage. Dont buy it, dont bother installing it.

Really casual arcade style game. If you're use to flight simulators then this game will be a dissappointment. The game play is repetitive and there doesn't seem to much variation with missions. Each mission feels like the last. If you're looking for a really casual flight game then i'd recommend this game but the replay value is low. 5/10

After like a month or so, the game just magically decided to start working and with that, my rating for the thing obviously changes.

Got the game for like a dollar or so from somewhere. it's a fairly generic flight combat """""""simulator""""""". Thing hasn't seen a simulator in a hundred mile radius around it, it's as arcadey as it gets.
Controls are fairly simple really on the 360 pad, although aiming and flying the planes is a bit twitchy and needs to get used to.
There is an auto aim "Ace Mode" button, which basically follows the target automatically so you just have to hold down shoot. Haven't used that one pretty much at all.

One surprising thing about the game is local coop, like on the same machine with split screen and all. That is a big, big thumbs up for me as split screen gaming is pretty much dead nowadays. Even better is the campaign which allows split screen too.

An average run of the mill arcade combat game with nothing that it does too great or too badly, like average to the letter, but the split screen sets it apart from the rest and is a really nice breath of fresh air.

I only recommend this game for the $2 it's worth. It's has nothing that stands out or special to it. It's just fly typically short missions and nothing extensive with so so controls which have few options. Compared to Flying Tigers Shadows Over China it is a much better game. It also doesn't take much of a computer to run it so having games like this on my laptop are worth it sometimes.

All good things come in threes - Three modes, for three kinds of aerial simulation players - Casual, Arcade and Simulation (from easiest to hardest), three difficulty levels, three types of weapons - guns, rockets and bombs/torpedoes.
All this, topped with a realistic WWII setting, covering both the European theatre with RAF vs. Luftwaffe skirmishes, and the wars of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the US Navy, fought by brave pilots just as much as by the ship's crews.
The planes come in a lot of variety and with customization options for camouflage, nose art, side art and wing art.
I would add that this is one of the historically accurate games set in WWII. It's one of the very few games that I've seen to feature the use of V-1 flying rockets by the Luftwaffe, in one desperate attempt to utterly wreck London.
Aerial combat in World War II was the beginning of a new era of aerial warfare, with the development and use of jetfighters in the European theater. The Gloster Meteor of the RAF, and countering it, introduced in the game soon afterwards - the Luftwaffe's Me-262. This is actually depicted in the game in a very cinematic manner and (minor spoiler) some lines hint to this feeling of change. On encountering the old BF-109s, the RAF squadron remarks that the Jerries are still flying those old Messers, hoping to be the dominant air power with the superior Meteors, but as if waiting for the words to be uttered enters a German jetfighter - the Me-262.
There's historical battles, air to air, air to land, air to sea combat; there's local co-op and multiplayer; there's survival mode (somewhat like the Survival mode of Modern Warfare 3 or the Firefight mode of Halo series); there's your favourite airplanes from the WWII era - do you see a reason *not* to call this simply one of the best games of the genre?

Dogfight 1942 is an arcade WW2 airplane shooter where you pilot various planes on all fronts, jumping from hotspot to hotspot, taking roles of different pilots. You're be jumping from Pearl Harbor to Battle of Britain, from infiltrating occupied France in a captured Bf-110 to torpedo bombing the Japanese flatops at Midway, and many more. The controls must be played with an Xbox360 controller or similar twin-analog controllers (or mouse/keyboard), as this uses mainly the RC plane control method. The AI handles stuff like landing gear and throttle, you just concentrate on turn and burn. Landing is often done for a little extra challenge, and occasionally you need to go after an enemy ace. On easy the planes are responsive and the plane even "regenerates" if you don't get hit for a while. There's even kill cams where the victim of your gun mastery breaks apart in a shower of flames. There are variety of activities, from bombings to rocket attacks, from gunnery to torpedo runs, and if you are desperate you can even call in your wingmen to assist. Graphics are quite good. This is not a sim, nor does it pretend to be, as often your kills will be in the 20's, 30's, even 40's in a single mission. It's a fun game, and it delievers the shallow fun for the turn-and-burn crowd.

A rather simplistic approach on World War 2 aerial combat, letting you enjoy the fantasy of participating in some of the greatest battles of the war without reading 800 pages of manuals and learning about aerodynamics. It is mindless and somewhat dull if played for too long in a single session, but in short bursts manages to pull off being a fun little arcade-game that is all about nicely modeled aircraft blowing up in spectacular kill-cam-cutscenes and some beautiful looking combat areas (particularly when you rise above the clouds towards the sun).

There is no clutter in this, get in there, blow stuff up, return home - rinse and repeat. If you are expecting more, you need to look elsewhere - especially realism has been dropped to provide a more fun, arcade-ish experience - which I feel is the way this needs to be played as it reminds me of earlier Ace Combat-titles or Crimson Skies (while not being as good as both of these series). If you just want to blow some fascists out of the sky, this is the way to go - just don't expect a simulation like IL-2 Sturmovik and you will be fine.

Little WW2 arcade sim... it runs quite smoothly, there's some mission variety to keep things from getting boring and it controls OK with a gamepad.
I played at the default difficulty level + Simulation mode; it is a bit on the easy side, but not without some mild challenge here and there, missions do not drag too long, and there is at least one checkpoint, usually more, in between, so you'll never have to repeat too much if you fail.

Completed the main campaign in about 3.5 hours, and i guess there is a couple more hours to play to complete both DLC.... all in all, not a bad title if you like this sort of gameplay and can get it cheap.

Dogfight 1942 is exactly what it sounds like, an Aerial combat game taking place after the events of Pearl Harbor during The Second World War. Instead of being a Flight Combat Simulator, Dogfight 1942 is more of a Flight Combat Arcade-type game. Playing with a traditional Keyboard and Mouse, I found the flying to be slightly unrealistic and to smooth to classify it as a simulator; However, it still has appeal as a fun aerial combat game. Similar to the Ace Combat series, You attack a varying range of adversaries both Aerial and ground-based, using a variety of different period aircraft you unlock through campaigning. The game can be played in Campaign mode, Through Single-player as well as Coop play with online friends. Graphically, I think it looks decent for the type of game it is. The scoring system, as well as earning 5 stars on each mission are what really give it an arcade feel. For a World War 2 type combat game, you could do worse. For an Aerial combat game, I've played much worse. Dogfight 1942 has some appeal, especially if you have friends whom you want to thrash with your own high score.

I bought this game soon after its release. It was 10% off I think, and it seemed great at first. The campaign got tiresome and was insanely difficult because of the dodgy controls. If you like arcade shooters, get it. If you want a WW2 air combat simulator, play war thunder. I like it for the arcady feel.

I love WW2 games and I saw this one in a shop and it looked fun so I bought it. I played some hour with this game and its fun but the its not realy realisim like War Thunder and the Storyline is realy short too. You can only play as the Americans and Britanians in the Storymode. I like the Idea of a coop Battle you can play but you need a X-Box controler wich sucks. The DLC's are some fun but end realy quicky too, but in my opinion they are to expensive. I had fun playing this game.

**edit below**
From a purely arcade standpoint, this is one heck of a lot of fun. Only 3 missions in so far, but this is the best flying fun I've had since the Aces series by Dynamix (Sierra). Take-off and landing are quite simplified in arcade mode, which is fine by me. I wanted an up-close dogfighting game with nice graphics for this decade and that's what I have got. All the more modern war-flight sims focus so much more on reading the radar screens and locking on targets to take down the enemy. This is up-close, personal, get 'em in your cross-hairs and take 'em down fun.
So far, 4 out of 5 stars

Finished Act 1, parts of Act 2 and some QuickPlay. rating goes higher - 4.5 outta 5 stars

★★★★★★★☆☆☆

A surprisingly fun little arcadey dog fighting game. As of writing this the price is £7 and while I'm not sure I'd pay that, I certainly would pay pretty much any sale price.

The game can be a little confusing at some points with regards to how to execute certain parts of a mission, but other than that the game runs really well and is a genuinely fun experience in a genre which is currently very sparse.

My only minor gripe with it is that it's rather short and the controls feel a bit floaty, but other than that it's an enjoyable game.

Well it's no simulator. But if you don't want to spend a lot of time reading a hefty manual you're in for a treat. The missions offer a great diversity of tasks and you've the chance to fly a lot of different planes. The aircraft models and the overall graphics are decent enough and if you want to take some amazing screenshots wait for the killcam. The missions are short enough to complete in 15 to 20 minutes max - so if you're no hardcore simulation gamer just hop in your plane and have some casual fun.
I strongly recommend to buy the DLC as you get a lot more content.
The game is well optimized and runs smoothly on my system - (see my profile) - and it's worth the asking price although if you're patient you can pick it up on sale quite often.

This game is great. Do not be discouraged when first playing this game and realizing the controls are really hard, all you need to do is lower the mouse sensitivity, and use 'Ace Mode'. Its so awesome to see those kill cams when the planes hit the ocean and explode.
