Greate Game! in this game you don't command massive armys like in other rts games but you command a small unit. you chose what you want to be, Air, Armor, Infintry or support, each class haveing there own spiecial units. the AI is very well done and can present a chalenge for players of all skills. the visuals are great for the time period of the game with amazing sound. i cant say much though becuase i had to turn them down as i am using a potato of a computer but even at a lower setting it looks great. now for the one major complaint... they shut down the online servers wich was as i have herd the best part. i think there is a way to play online through third party software but use at your risk. well that is my review hope you enjoyed and thatks for reading!

UPDATED REVIEW 5/2/16 - READ BEFORE BUYING
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

If you are looking for main review, it is below, this is updated with an issue I found on 5/2/16.

If you're the type of person to have two monitors like I do (my laptop then external monitor), I will have to warn you that if you set your second monitor (my external one) to be the main in fullscreen when gaming (can be done through Big Picture), your game WILL NOT RUN[/b]!!!
I do not know how to patch this. I only know you can play on second monitor in windowed mode.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
First of all, this game is amazing BUT, there were issues!

First Impressions
First off, when I tried the demo for this game, I was amazed at how much of it's RTS system (Real Time Strategy) reminded me of Age of Empires III so I finished up the demo and decided to buy it as I enjoyed it and I wanted to be able to play the full thing.

After Purchase
---
After I bought it, I downloaded both games (WiC + WiC:SA) and attempted to play it to only have it load up only the launching screen which is similar to Fallout's but instead it shows the news and the enter CD key along with the play button. After I entered the key and hit play, the game made my screen go black before going awya from black to show one of those Windows error boxes with a red "X" and no text other than a button that said "Okay." Basically the game did not load at all.

Solution Search
---
So when this happened, I was quite saddened and confused so I spent some time reading views and searching online to see the solution and I saw that others have had this situation which annoyed me further as I was confused why the game would be on the Steam store with a working demo but a broken game. So in the end I uninstalled it fully and game up.

Fixing The Game
---
HOWEVER, after a bit of time, I found a thing that said install WiC and DO NOT also install WiC:SA and after installing, verify game files. After I did that, it found a bunch of files that were missing and reinstalled them so afterwards the game worked with no issues.
From there, I proceeded to install WiC:SA, I did the verify files on WiC:SA, and it found a bunch missing so after it installed those files, I could run the full game (which is WiC:SA which is basically the normal game with the expansion) without any issues.

Conclusion + Summary To Fixing (my method)
---
  1. Install World in Conflict
  2. Verify game files
  3. Load up game + put in CD key
  4. Exit game and install World in Conflict: Soviet Assault
  5. Verify game files
  6. Load up game + put in CD key
If this does not work, reverify both game files after both games are installed.

Now for my concluding opinion on this fix:
It was a pain in the ♥♥♥ to search for and took time and there are VARIOUS ways to fix the game if it does not launch for you and who knows, maybe I got lucky and this fixed it. Just search online if this doesn't work or try on a different computer.

Summarizing Purchase
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After fixing the game and playing a bit of the campaign (highly recommend playing it through WiC:SA) and a bunch of LAN with the bots, I would recommend the game as it is very fun, a bit similar to the Age of Empire series, and requires a bunch of thought and skill. As I have no IRL friends who own this game, I have never played LAN with any of them BUT, against bots and the campaign are still quite fun!

Impressions: 5/5
(From demo)
Playability: 3/5
(Due to need to be fixed)
Content: 4/5
Campaign: 4/5
(Where I am so far)
Difficulty: 3.5/5
(On some LAN bot games, difficulty doesn't feel like how it should)
Overall: 4/5
^Worth your purchase^

Things To Note
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
  • Game may requiring fixing to files before being able to play
  • No such thing as online anymore as the servers were taken down in 2015 (LAN still works)
  • If you play WiC, your save will not be fully transfered to WiC:SA (Reccomend playing WiC:SA as you can see the full story of the game)
  • Unlike Age of Empires, there are 4 different "trees" to master
  • Game is fun to play solo

The campain was by far the best campain in any RTS game that I have ever played. I was very pleased with the length of the campain and how it lets you play both sides of the war (US and USSR). the sheer power of the explosions is awe-inspiring. the game mechanics work extreamly well, an example is when you are moving your units they all stay togeather and move at the pace of your slowest unit which I find to be a very nice and realistic feature. all in all this is by far my favorite RTS and at the price it is at now it is a shame not to buy it because I would pay a full $60 for this game and after you play it you will understand why I say that.

Great game, when it runs properly!

If u have issues to start the game (game crashes in the main menu or during the game) like me, do the following steps:

Disable the dx 10 in the "Game Options" file: Search the file "myDX10Flag 1" and change the "1" to "0" (You can find the file in C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\World in Conflict). After that close and save the file.

Then go to your "World in Conflict" Folder (steam folder), right click on "wic.exe" and open the properties to do the following changes in the compatibilty: Run this program in compatibilty mode for: "Windows Vista (Service Pack2), then make a check on the "Disable visual themes" and a check on "Run this program as administrator".

I also recommend to enable VSync in the mainmenu, if u have horizontal stripes during video sequences.

This worked for me perfectly (Windows 7 64bit).

This game does not work. It will load up and you are only able to play the tutorial. Aftwards attempting to play the single player campaign the screen will go black and the story does not advance.
As of now there are no fixes for this and the community is either dead or just unwilling to help resolve the issue.

TL; DR: skip to "Overall" section

The Game

World In Conflict is an RTS set during the final stages of the Cold War, but instead of the Wall coming down and people embracing each other in a state of peace, the Wall comes down with a bunch of explosives and a desire for war on both ends.
As an RTS, it's actually quite simple: you don't have a resource meter like in Company of Heroes. You do have a certain number of points to call on units to the battlefield, so choose wisely. The units itself are rather simple: from infantry units to helicopters, you can choose your approach in whatever way suits you best. As for the missions, you have a set number of primary objectives to complete (or else you'll fail), and an additional number of secondary objectives (these usually reward medals and addtional units on the battlefield).

The Story

After peace talks break down, the army of the Soviet Union, under the command of Colonel Orlovsky, invade the West Berlin area under Allied control, sparking WWIII in Europe. As Germany turns into an authentic meat grinder, the storyline shifts into the US, where a Lieutenant Parker, under commands of Colonel Sawyer, is in charge of an evacuation of Seattle after freighters arrive secretly carrying an ever-growing Soviet force.
This is the beginning of the storyline of WiC. Over time, you'll be carried to different parts of USA, France, Germany, Norway and Russia, learning the story of characters from both sides of the Iron Curtain, and, like in most wars, you'll understand how both sides have good and evil in them.

Pros and Cons

Pros
- Well made missions with great content and around 8 objectives per mission ensure lots of hours of playtime
- Detailed units of both the USA/NATO forces and USSR forces, from the T-80 to the M1 Abrams. Even the Ekranoplane and the B2 stealth bomber make appearances!
- Air support menu ensures tactical advantage at the cost of points: use wisely.
- Reinforcement menu is simple and easy to use: no need for buildings or resources.
- Characters with great storyline background and voice-acting allows
- Want to blow up stuff with napalm, tactical nukes, white phosporus and incendiary bombs? This is for you then
- Easy to learn with a well comprehensive tutorial
- Runs on low-end computers

Cons
- Multiplayer is kind of dead ever since Massive Entertainment shut down their servers

Overall

This was the first RTS I've ever played, and I'm quite happy with that. If you're looking for a well-made, easy to learn and with a well-writen story, this is the strategy game for you. Afraid to try games like Men of War or Company of Heroes for the first time? Get World in Conflict. Men of War and Company of Heroes are the frontline RTS games: either you win or you're not good enough. World in Conflict is bootcamp: it's for you to learn and take your first steps in the RTS world.

Has
  • Intense campaign set-pieces that have you utterly obliterate the unrelenting Red Menace.
  • Fleshed-out characters and character development followed by a solid 'What if..?' plot.
  • Your character is probably Alec Baldwin.
  • Playable NATO faction with a full gamut of European accents.
  • Additionally playable USSR faction also with a full gamut of Russian accents.
  • Vehicles spawned in via transport plane airdrop.
  • Incredibly intense intro montage on startup.
  • 'Danger Close' is apparently closer than 10 meters.
  • Russian submarine fuel is super-explosive.
  • Badass Norwegian Rangers.
  • You are given fire control of a totally OP Iowa-class BB's nine 16-inch cannons.
  • Naval 16-inch Danger Close is 2000 meters.
  • You are the God of explosions.
  • Napalm Strikes.
  • Poison Gas Strikes.
  • Artillery Strikes in three flavors.
  • Air Strikes.
  • Air-to-Air Strikes.
  • Laser-Guided Freedom Strikes.
  • BRRRRRRRT Strikes.
  • Daisycutter Strikes.

Steam Version is BROKEN! Everyone is having problems across the board and usually disabling dx10 1 to dx10 0 will seem to fix the regular campaign, but then some people end up getting crashes on random levels. The dx10 fix does not work on the soviet assault dlc so it is utterly useless at the moment.

Do yourselves a favor and go get the game here http://www.gog.com/game/world_in_conflict_complete_edition. GOG has sales time to time so yeah can pick it up cheap.

This game is about a world in conflict. If you like conflicts in the world, then this is the game for you! ***Spoiler Alert*** This game is about a conflict between the U.S and the U.S.S.R in an alternate time line. Because that didn't really happen in 1989.

I loved this game back to bits when I got it in 2011. I recieved a hard disc copy for my birthday and it was one of the best, if not the best, strategy games I have ever played, period. That being said I cannot recommend the game as is to anyone right now, regardless of how great it may have been in the past. The multiplayer, one of the key aspects of the game is dead, and the campaign is slightly broken (Can't even get the first mission to start after it finished loading).

It's sad to see such a great game be left in the past ...
