What i dont get is theres a "new" Madden or FIFA each year but if you like some clobbering on top of your managing this is pretty much the only option except for some crappy Speedball remake.
And its a good option, however this is no normal sports game in a sense but a boardgame and so....
a) The success or failure of every action a player performs is determined by a dice roll which probably (maybe possibly) isnt weighted against you but sure as hell feels like it is.
b) Starting out you lack all the hard counters which could soften the impact of yet another failed roll - the opposition doesnt
c) The tutorial isnt that helpful so you lack info on how to soften the impact of yet another failed roll or how to prevent them
In conclusion a+b+c= Your ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥ boiling and the neighbors calling the police to detain the gibbering screeching loon next door because someone failed to pick up a ball three times and then died walking a step too much all the while the opposition who is PROBABLY ♥♥♥♥ING GOD DAMN PRANCY ELVES HURT THEM HURT THEM HURT THEM KILL KILL KILL MURDER MAIM ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ GOD DAMN SHUT UP ♥♥♥♥ YOUR RNG ♥♥♥♥ ALT+F4
Yet it is still fun somehow (must be a roguelike thing), butthe longer you play and actually win stuff the more it turns out the manager part isnt that indepth.
Hiring and firing players (no possibility to mix races, also they pretty much are all the same and theres a set limit on types which can be deployed - no all-bruiser teams for example), purchasing some temporary boosters or other stuff which is in essence a chance at a reroll, thats about it. Players can level up and you can select skills or stat boosts - theres actually somewhat many but level ups are slow and a few skills are absolutely essential for the role a player is supposed to fill so youll prolly always wanna chose those.
Theres a "Blitz" mode which has some more stuff along the same lines along with buying equipment which is expensive, temporary and on top of that provides benefits only at a random chance around 20% and in classic mode the player would gain the visual upgrade on a level up (without the bonus, not sure). Also you have to chose a sponsor and if you dont fullfill certain criteria they take all your money at the end of a season because thats how this works (?!?). Play classic.
Theres "live" commentary which inevitably gets old after a while.
Still a very fun game despite or more likely because of the random element..oh heh RNG dicked you over again. Roll 1D6 vs Tantrum or break 1D6 objects in a one square radius.
