I've been with maple since pre-big bang during my adolescence and this game is enjoyable from time to time as I come and go each time when bored. Its really amazing how I still managed to stick around despite me telling myself that I've quit maple for good. Sometimes, you can't get rid of childhood memories. ;)

To give some context, I've been playing on/off since Beta. So I have a nostalgia for this game I cannot shake. Therefore, at the time of writing this review, I have 912 hours of this game on my Steam account. But don't get me wrong. Most of this was just me AFKing overnight to sell things, because if you want to have a shop that you can leave open without playing the game, you have to pay a crazy amount of money. I think it's like, I dunno, $3 for a 24 hour shop. Yeah. Meanwhile, it's only $1.80 for a 3 month permit to do the same thing, but you have to be online. Seems fair, right? Yeah. Anyways, here's the review lmao

+ Surprisingly fun combat
+ Consistently updated
+ Several different classes
+ Levelling is straightforward and easy
+ Reboot server takes the pay to win out of the game (but also removes other features as a result, encouraging people to keep playing on the P2W servers as well)
+ Very cute style, have had a lot of fun customizing my character with gear.

~ Simple Crafting system (Both good and bad, because those who don't like crafting in MMOs typically won't have trouble using it, but it also makes it boring for those who love in-depth crafting systems in MMOs.)

- Pay to win out the ♥♥♥. People sell their godly weapons and armor on Paypal. Anyone with a few hundred dollars can become number one in a day.
- Outdated, constantly lags and crashes, built on old framework and needs updating. The sequel, Maplestory 2, looks fun but will probably never come out globally.
- Once you reach a certain level, your daily routine typically involves fighting the standard bosses for about an hour or two then keeping your shop open overnight to sell more and buy more gear/cosmetics. It's a massive grind til the very end.
- Pay 2 Fashion. You have a very small, if even any, selection of hairs/faces at the beginning. The only way to change them is with NX. No joke, you have to pay real money to change your hair and face. Of course, you can just pay people to gift you a coupon with in-game money, but if you want to have enough in-game cash to pay someone to do that, you either have to beg or pay real money to get gear to grind for these things. In short, unless you're insanely patient or have wealthy friends, you're going to be coerced into buying NX with real cash. Because looking ugly in an MMO sucks. Oh, and not to mention, the best hairs are in Royal Coupons and the likes, which have a RANDOM SELECTION of 6-8 hairs, of which at least half usually look terrible. This game wants your money. That's why it's still alive. And it works.

Overall: Giant cash grab. Still fun if you have the money. If you don't like looking decent and don't care about bossing, then sure, I can see how you can enjoy this game, but honestly, who's going to go to this outdated MMO and do that? There are better MMOs out there. Don't waste your time here.

Can't play in 1080p, only horrible resolutions. Server ping is terrible and sometimes takes a full second for interactions, item dropping, etc... FPS drops constantly with a GTX 860 and 8 GB RAM. Used to play this game daily when I was little, but now that I have taste in games it's horrifying. Also can't remap movement keys, they are stuck on arrow keys.

Repeat after me; "I am not bored enough to start playing MapleStory again."
However, if you ever are bored enough to play MapleStory again it has most likely changed so much since the last time you played it that you experience it brand new again.

If you are looking to try MapleStory for the first time I would go into it with the mindset of "This game is meant for children, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun playing it." Because the graphics, dialog, and even the animations are very childish but it is a fun game that will eat all your spare time for roughly two weeks, and then it will sit in your library for a few months. Then you'll delete it, then re-install it roughly one year later and repeat the process.

This was my first MMO experience back in 2006 way before there were the 30+ classes there are today. It started with 4 classes with 2-3 branches each. It's changed so much and yet I still play. This is the ONLY MMO that can keep me coming back. The combat is simple and the skills are flashy. A lot has changed in 10 years but it's still the same 2D side scroller I remember.

This is a review based around the REBOOT server. Reboot was one of the major goods the Nexon did to this game, and it was an update big enough to bring the community back to life in its last dying breaths. Nexon America, notorious for focusing only on pushing out content and collecting as much profit as possible, rose above and listened to the community for the first time in a while. They finally addressed the fact that their game was heavily pay-to-win based. I do agree that it was rather scummy to save this as a last resort instead of doing it earlier, but the fact remains that they did it, even at the risk of losing money.

Reboot is a GMS server different from all the others, in that the only items you can buy using real money are purely cosmetic, aside from pets. Pets are definitely needed for fast grinding of mesos in the late-game, but even they can be earned by killing Hilla, a mid-game boss.

MapleStory will always hold a place in my heart, even long after I leave. Through the layers of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t Nexon coated the game in, there's a genuinely good game with an expansive world and a great community. I was long gone and done with the regular servers but Reboot brought me and tens of thousands of other players back, allowing everyone an equal oppurtunity.

We can even see now that Nexon is slowly beginning to address bugs and balance issues. In recent patches, Nexon was also able to add new content that was meaningful and well made, while also balancing characters and fixing bugs. They also give out items if ever they make mistakes that mislead players or affect gameplay, fixing it right away as well.

I have many other things to say about the game, but I think everything beyond what I've said so far is purely subjective and will be up to the player whether or not they like it.

(Ignore the hours. The account attached to this was lost.)

With how the game has been getting, I have to say there is more reason to give it a positive remark. I do have negative views about the company and how they've make it into a cash cow with their games, but I won't digress too much into this review about that and suggest reading my Mabinogi review about that.

= - = - = - = - = Positives about the game = - = - = - = - =
Balancing of Classes:
For a long while, there were many classes that were just too overpowered and needed adjustments. Luckily, they fixed that in December of 2015 by giving necessary nerfs and buffs to classes. Many people would play a specific job (like Kaiser or Dual Blader), while neglecting other classes (like Evan or Aran) because they rather play overpowered over underpowered. I do see some jobs needing rework, but there is likely revamps going to happen.

No Pay-2-Win Server (Reboot):
This was necessary for the longest time because of how people can just drop $10 worth of Nexon Cash and end up with like 200+ million mesos for their character. It put a huge difference between the players who work for their money (by bossing or gathering) and people who can just drop money into the game.

Easier for Beginners:
I'm a veteran of this game for nearly 10 years and I remember the hardship of being sustained in the game, especially if you were a magician that relies heavily off of potions. Now, this game hands out money and potions like candy and I do support it, especially in the methods of how Nexon has done it.

= - = - = - = - = Negatives about the game = - = - = - = - =
Finding People to Work With:
Unless you have friends that play this game personally and willing to keep you there, the game gets boring and some content does require you to be in parties. Even for me, I can't do some content without the help of a friend and I'm fortunate that I was employed at Maple-Radio for a point to obtain some active, nice friends during my tenure. The game in the previous years were quite easy to get into a guild and work together, but these days--it's harder to do so and can be a challenge. You may want to spend some time trying to get into some groups.

The Company Itself:
I can go from one end of the earth to the other about this, but they have milked this game (and others) dry with the Pay-2-Win complex. Alongside, there has been times the company would say one thing, but then take it back and proclaim they "never said that" or you're "twisting their words." If you have a negative view or complaint about the company, don't even dare try to say that on the Nexon Forums or you'll end up with the Hime fans pouncing all over you or potentially banned. (I've witnessed and was a victim of this myself.)

Dead Servers:
The higher you go up the server list chain (exception of Reboot), you'll notice that the game doesn't have a thriving community in some servers. If you want to stay in a small server, fine; however, you will pay the price of how expensive some things might be and how some content might be limited to you because of the population and economy.
