This game is really fun with friends. It's more of a social game, however, playing alone or without a guild gets boring pretty fast. The Reboot server helped get rid of the p2w aspect of the game, but I would only play this with friends or find a guild. The other servers seem dead except maybe Scania and Bera. Even Reboot seemed dead at times. I played in Nova; that server is a ghost town.

Not recommended for players around here, since the game doesn't function properly. It either black screens, doesn't show servers or shuts down after a certain amount of time, I've tried finding a solution for several months (If not years) and I've spent countless hours re-downloading etc. Other than that, It's a fun game.

With how the game has been getting, I have to say there is more reason to give it a positive remark. I do have negative views about the company and how they've make it into a cash cow with their games, but I won't digress too much into this review about that and suggest reading my Mabinogi review about that.

= - = - = - = - = Positives about the game = - = - = - = - =
Balancing of Classes:
For a long while, there were many classes that were just too overpowered and needed adjustments. Luckily, they fixed that in December of 2015 by giving necessary nerfs and buffs to classes. Many people would play a specific job (like Kaiser or Dual Blader), while neglecting other classes (like Evan or Aran) because they rather play overpowered over underpowered. I do see some jobs needing rework, but there is likely revamps going to happen.

No Pay-2-Win Server (Reboot):
This was necessary for the longest time because of how people can just drop $10 worth of Nexon Cash and end up with like 200+ million mesos for their character. It put a huge difference between the players who work for their money (by bossing or gathering) and people who can just drop money into the game.

Easier for Beginners:
I'm a veteran of this game for nearly 10 years and I remember the hardship of being sustained in the game, especially if you were a magician that relies heavily off of potions. Now, this game hands out money and potions like candy and I do support it, especially in the methods of how Nexon has done it.

= - = - = - = - = Negatives about the game = - = - = - = - =
Finding People to Work With:
Unless you have friends that play this game personally and willing to keep you there, the game gets boring and some content does require you to be in parties. Even for me, I can't do some content without the help of a friend and I'm fortunate that I was employed at Maple-Radio for a point to obtain some active, nice friends during my tenure. The game in the previous years were quite easy to get into a guild and work together, but these days--it's harder to do so and can be a challenge. You may want to spend some time trying to get into some groups.

The Company Itself:
I can go from one end of the earth to the other about this, but they have milked this game (and others) dry with the Pay-2-Win complex. Alongside, there has been times the company would say one thing, but then take it back and proclaim they "never said that" or you're "twisting their words." If you have a negative view or complaint about the company, don't even dare try to say that on the Nexon Forums or you'll end up with the Hime fans pouncing all over you or potentially banned. (I've witnessed and was a victim of this myself.)

Dead Servers:
The higher you go up the server list chain (exception of Reboot), you'll notice that the game doesn't have a thriving community in some servers. If you want to stay in a small server, fine; however, you will pay the price of how expensive some things might be and how some content might be limited to you because of the population and economy.

Ah, MapleStory. My very first Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game. Where should I start? Ah, well, as a naive 14 year old teenager, I figured this was the most amazing thing. I noticed that my sister had installed it on the toaster of a tower we had at the time, and I joined at around 2 weeks in on the Dual Blade class' release date. It was a remarkable experience to say the least. Everything was alien and I had no idea where to start. Distributing stats where they did not go and purchasing ridiculously gear that was not needed was only the beginning of my journey in MapleStory. I met a valuable friend who I still know up to this day, and is probably the only good thing I received from this tarnished game. I will admit, it offered an unforgettable experience, but looking back now, I already grew out of it, or rather, the game grow out of me. Its updates pushed me away.

Before you assume I am one of those, "Big bang ruined MapleStory" people, note that I played even after this update. In fact, I played on and off with months of intervals at a time, thanks to real life things going on, until right before the RED update. I expanded my horizons and played other MMORPGs that my friend dragged me to. However, despite all those things, MapleStory kept calling back to me. I would often quit due to frustration and I realized the game was just not the same anymore with the introductions of so many new classes and the changes that were given. Mind you, I like change and embrace it, but MapleStory was one of those things that were given TOO MANY changes, and that alone was enough to drive me away. Eventually, it got to the point where I just stopped playing. From months at a time, I would get this nostalgic feeling to go back and pick up the game again, but then I realized how much the game urges you to make multiple characters, to work as much as you can on them for link skills and the like, and frankly... that was too much to fit into my daily life.

MapleStory was great game in its, however, the folks at Nexon have horrible customer service and the term, "Balance" means nothing to them, not to mention the North American community itself is pure cancer, full of idiots and immature children who just started growing their first chin hairs. I for one, no longer crave this game and if you look at my playtime hours, I indeed picked it up one last time and thought, "Yup, I totally grew out of this game", and was finally able to let it go.

Pros
  • Stays true to being massive and having tons of things to do.
  • It has over 30 classes to choose from.
  • Has the ability to drag you in and never let you go like a true MMORPG.(If you are into that kind of thing)
  • First 20 level tutorial offers a chance to change your character's cosmetics to one of your choosing. (Hair and face)

    Cons
  • Mini-game system is a horrible alternative for player versus player content.
  • Community is dead, not even megaphones about guild gossip and over priced items that you will never get exist.
  • All the real good players left a long time ago
  • It is too much of a money sink for temporary cash shop cosmetics or gambling for permanent clothing. You are darn lucky that your equips actually CHANGE your character's looks, albeit ugly.
  • It urges you to create multiple characters to take advantage of their set bonuses, thus wasting more time in the game.
  • Potential system separates the neckbeards from the whelps.
  • Broken economy

Played it since the start. Has been a really good time waster since I was a wee child.
All the casuals have left.
Only Large Guilds, Newbies and Addicts are left.
Unless you can find some friends (Or bring them yourself) the late game is abit of a pain in the ♥♥♥.

9/10 fondest childhood memories.

This was my first MMO experience back in 2006 way before there were the 30+ classes there are today. It started with 4 classes with 2-3 branches each. It's changed so much and yet I still play. This is the ONLY MMO that can keep me coming back. The combat is simple and the skills are flashy. A lot has changed in 10 years but it's still the same 2D side scroller I remember.

Repeat after me; "I am not bored enough to start playing MapleStory again."
However, if you ever are bored enough to play MapleStory again it has most likely changed so much since the last time you played it that you experience it brand new again.

If you are looking to try MapleStory for the first time I would go into it with the mindset of "This game is meant for children, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun playing it." Because the graphics, dialog, and even the animations are very childish but it is a fun game that will eat all your spare time for roughly two weeks, and then it will sit in your library for a few months. Then you'll delete it, then re-install it roughly one year later and repeat the process.
