About This Game

Home is a unique horror adventure set in a beautifully-realized pixel world. It’s a murder mystery with a twist—because you decide what ultimately happens.

Awakened by an oncoming storm, you open your eyes to discover yourself in a strange, dark room—tucked away in a house that’s not yours.

As you play the game, it changes—subtly, almost imperceptibly—to reflect your perspective. It's a horror game unlike any other, and as you'll discover, its truths are entirely subjective.

Whoever gives this game a negative review because of "lazy writing" regarding the fact that the player has to decide what the story was about instead of just being told, is a total morοn. The very description of the game by its creator at the top of this page clearly says: "It's a murder mystery with a twist — because you decide what ultimately happens."

It's a very interesting concept and definitely worth exploring.

The game has an overall creepy atmosphere, but it's pretty simple and dumb. What you get is a straightforward storyline that asks you pointless questions such as "do you open the door". Well, uh... Yeah, I guess I am going to have to open the door, huh. How about that.

The story shows some potential, but it's painfully obvious that John, you are the demons. And while there's some mystery to solve, there's no real intrigue when it's shoved down your throat and the game constantly bombards you with questions like some needy kid: Who's the real murderer? What's your theory? Do you like the game? Mom, did you notice that thing in that one room? Moooom! Stop it, you're not playing right, you're just trying to get yourself killed so you wouldn't have to play my game!

It's boring, but it's alright if you're easily scared and you get it for free.

It's sad to see this game sitting at a "Mixed" rating. It's not perfect but all the subtleties of how the game reacts to the player's choices make it actually a pretty impressive as well as immersive experience. The little world bubble seems to be living in it's dead state and the main character's mind is visibly evolving throughout the game. I don't mind a few quirks and mistakes along the way.
It was fun. It should be shorter, though. I'm pretty sure the whole factory section could be omitted and told only as a text-based lore in some places.

I spent so much time looking for items essential to the game. Keys, papers, etc. However, I never found a story. It seemed as if the author themselves either didn't finish the story, or didn't know what they were doing, so they just left it out and thought that the pretty (actually really nice) graphics would be enough.

I really want to start with what I feel about Home, does well.

It’s a game about exploring a small town after some sort of event has left it empty, a ghost town if you will. Part of the charm is learning what happened here. The music and sound effects do a nice job of accopaining the mystique of it all.

It also has a nice neat art style. It’s not like it’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen but it's not different enough to be something memorable (To most people the worse thing you can accuse art style of being is bad, but to it's worse to be forgettale).

Then there is what I don’t like about it.

First off, it breaks the cardinal rule of gaming, it’s not really fun to play. In fact there isn’t much to do except wander around scene to scene (read; rooms/areas) getting snib bits of information on what the hell is going on. That’s it. That's the whole game. I had the same issue with “We’ve all Gone to the Rapture.” It’s a 2D walking simulator with virtually no puzzles at all. And by the time you get to the end, (I’m not sure many of you will bother to play it that long), you’re sort of done with it. Keeping in mind this game is only 2.99 and goes on sale sometimes. For what it is, it’s really not bad. Which as my father would say, "Not exactly a compliment." I give it a luke warm 5 out of 10 for trying to do something cool but missing the wow factor that would’ve made it a must play that I would feel better recomending to people. This being said though, if you like peaceful creepy games, Home will be fun for you.

It was a fun little game. Although not horror, it did give me a very unsettling atmosphere. If you want a little uncanny experience for a bit, take a look. I got this game from the GameMaker Humble Bundle.

It mostly achieves what it set out to achieve. However, there is very little to do and even if the story is "good" the gameplay is pretty bad and enviroments can be confusing at times. I simply found myself going through each floor in every building just clicking everything which wasn't very fun.

Pros:
Innovative
Intresting
Okay story
Aesthetic

Cons:
Boring
"Confusing" enviroments
"No" Gameplay

TL:DR Has a promising start setting up a potentially intersting story and atmosphere but never delivers on that potential

Home starts off really well. Your character wakes up in a room with a dead body and no idea of what happened or how he got there. The atmosphere feels really tense at the begin with you only able to see within the circle of light from your flashlight as you explore the otherwise almost completely dark surroundings. However as you play you'll find there isnt anything that will attack you or present any danger to your character and this sort of kills the tension a bit. You spend the game just going through doors and reading the snippets of text when you interact with glowing objects. There are some light puzzles but nothing that will challenge you in the slightest.

You are expected to piece together what has happened from the bits of text you read when you interact with objects however the end of the game (without spoiling things too much) makes this redundant by asking you to make your own conclusion. This would be fine if the stuff you learn throughout the game added up to a intriguing story but it doesn't. Instead its all vague and a bit cliched and it feels more like laziness on the part of the devs to come up without a good story with a great conclusion.

Good points:
- the beginning is quite good even if the rest of the game doesnt fall through.

Bad points:
-boring gameplay its just mostly running from one area to the next while clicking on objects as you go
-very unsatisfying and almost lazy conclusion
