About This Game

Home is a unique horror adventure set in a beautifully-realized pixel world. It’s a murder mystery with a twist—because you decide what ultimately happens.

Awakened by an oncoming storm, you open your eyes to discover yourself in a strange, dark room—tucked away in a house that’s not yours.

As you play the game, it changes—subtly, almost imperceptibly—to reflect your perspective. It's a horror game unlike any other, and as you'll discover, its truths are entirely subjective.

Home. Yes, you start in a house, you move to a not house, and keep moving to not houses, till you get to a house. The game is linary and moves you from point a to b over and over. You will slowly start to realize you should have clicked that object twice so you could grasp more of the story. Unfortunately it's already too late and you now walk slower through the rest of the game. You will continue wander the same place over and over thinking you missed something, when you actually didn't.
In the end the game makes you choose your own ending. You begin to wonder if that how it's suppose to go, and to find out the devs want you to choose your own ending.
I was so unhappy with the ending that I was pretty much like f__k it and closed it instead of going for another play-through.
I liked the game, but not enough to see what other things I could do with it, I just don't care about the character that much, to be honest, he's a p__sy.

Home is a weird game.

It has an excellently creepy atmosphere, I'd say this game, for the first few minutes, feels more creepy than most horror games I've played. That is sadly where the upsides to the game end though.

My issues with this game come from a few points. You quickly realize that you're alone in the game so there's nothing to fear. That wouldn't be an issue if the game's story was suitably scary and that's where the core of the game falls apart. The game is walk to the other end of the screen, interact with anything glowing, and then read the text. Now depending on what you interact with and how you answer questions, the story changes, but ultimately it ends with you finding your wife dead and you decide whether you killed her or someone else did. That's the biggest miss for me, if the game stuck to one storyline and worked on it a bit more then maybe it could have worked out better. It could have been the drunkard husband waking up from a hard night and needing to come to terms with his rampage, it could have been a jealous friend that tried to ruin your marriage, but instead the game decides to leave all it's plot threads hanging and even encourages you to post about what you thought the game was about. That's the sign of lazy writing, when you force people to write the ending for you.

The game has an overall creepy atmosphere, but it's pretty simple and dumb. What you get is a straightforward storyline that asks you pointless questions such as "do you open the door". Well, uh... Yeah, I guess I am going to have to open the door, huh. How about that.

The story shows some potential, but it's painfully obvious that John, you are the demons. And while there's some mystery to solve, there's no real intrigue when it's shoved down your throat and the game constantly bombards you with questions like some needy kid: Who's the real murderer? What's your theory? Do you like the game? Mom, did you notice that thing in that one room? Moooom! Stop it, you're not playing right, you're just trying to get yourself killed so you wouldn't have to play my game!

It's boring, but it's alright if you're easily scared and you get it for free.

Whoever gives this game a negative review because of "lazy writing" regarding the fact that the player has to decide what the story was about instead of just being told, is a total morοn. The very description of the game by its creator at the top of this page clearly says: "It's a murder mystery with a twist — because you decide what ultimately happens."

It's a very interesting concept and definitely worth exploring.

I really want to start with what I feel about Home, does well.

It’s a game about exploring a small town after some sort of event has left it empty, a ghost town if you will. Part of the charm is learning what happened here. The music and sound effects do a nice job of accopaining the mystique of it all.

It also has a nice neat art style. It’s not like it’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen but it's not different enough to be something memorable (To most people the worse thing you can accuse art style of being is bad, but to it's worse to be forgettale).

Then there is what I don’t like about it.

First off, it breaks the cardinal rule of gaming, it’s not really fun to play. In fact there isn’t much to do except wander around scene to scene (read; rooms/areas) getting snib bits of information on what the hell is going on. That’s it. That's the whole game. I had the same issue with “We’ve all Gone to the Rapture.” It’s a 2D walking simulator with virtually no puzzles at all. And by the time you get to the end, (I’m not sure many of you will bother to play it that long), you’re sort of done with it. Keeping in mind this game is only 2.99 and goes on sale sometimes. For what it is, it’s really not bad. Which as my father would say, "Not exactly a compliment." I give it a luke warm 5 out of 10 for trying to do something cool but missing the wow factor that would’ve made it a must play that I would feel better recomending to people. This being said though, if you like peaceful creepy games, Home will be fun for you.

I spent so much time looking for items essential to the game. Keys, papers, etc. However, I never found a story. It seemed as if the author themselves either didn't finish the story, or didn't know what they were doing, so they just left it out and thought that the pretty (actually really nice) graphics would be enough.

It was a fun little game. Although not horror, it did give me a very unsettling atmosphere. If you want a little uncanny experience for a bit, take a look. I got this game from the GameMaker Humble Bundle.

It's sad to see this game sitting at a "Mixed" rating. It's not perfect but all the subtleties of how the game reacts to the player's choices make it actually a pretty impressive as well as immersive experience. The little world bubble seems to be living in it's dead state and the main character's mind is visibly evolving throughout the game. I don't mind a few quirks and mistakes along the way.
It was fun. It should be shorter, though. I'm pretty sure the whole factory section could be omitted and told only as a text-based lore in some places.
