About This Game

About Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition:

Emperor Edition is the definitive edition of ROME II, featuring an improved politics system, overhauled building chains, rebalanced battles and improved visuals in both campaign and battle.

In addition, Emperor Edition includes all content and feature updates made available for ROME II since its launch in September 2013. These include Twitch.TV integration, touchscreen controls, new playable factions and units, and Mac compatibility.
The Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack and all Emperor Edition content and features are free, via automatic update, to all existing ROME II owners.

About the Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack

The Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack is a new playable campaign for ROME II, which rivals the original ROME II Grand Campaign in both scope and scale. This campaign comes as part of Total War™: ROME II – Emperor Edition and is available as a free, automatic update to existing owners of Total War™: ROME II.
The Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack is set in 42 BC during the chaotic aftermath of Caesar’s grisly murder. The republic remains whole, but its soul is divided as three great men, the members of the Second Triumvirate, hold the future of Rome in the palms of their hands.

Octavian, Caesar’s adoptive son and the heir to his legacy.

Marc Antony, Caesar’s loyal friend and most trusted lieutenant.

Lepidus, Pontifex Maximus of Rome and the man who secured Caesar’s dictatorship.

With the territories of The Republic divided between them and the military might of Rome at their beck-and-call, the members of The Second Triumvirate are each in a position to make a bid for leadership, and rule Rome as its first – and only – emperor.

However, external forces are on the move, looking to exploit the instability of Rome and expand their own territories. Will you fight as a defender of Rome and defeat the other members of the Triumvirate? Or lead another faction on a campaign of conquest and expansion, and take advantage of the chaos as the Roman civil war rages?

Playable Factions

Players may embark on a new Campaign as one of the following playable factions:
Marc Antony
Lepidus
Octavian
Pompey
Iceni
Marcomanni
Dacia
Egypt
Parthia
Armenia (also now playable in the ROME II Grand Campaign).

had a long war with carthage and many of my allies in the south helped me get rid of them, they easily defeated me in sea battles but i still managed to take carthago and other cities including one of their island before finally crushing the faction. people rebelled in one of my cities and defeated the army there, yet again, forming another carthage and somehow managed to expand and siege giant cities, this was the second time I had to whipe carthage out.

Sega's Rome II Emporer Edition gave me approximately 33 hours of joy (according to Detective Dickbutt) until the bugs and issues became too annoying to try and ignore. And that's exactly what it is, they are there and mostly minor but eventually you come accross issues that just become blindingly obvious that cross the threshold of being annoying to frustrating.

So I know at launch there were a lot of bugs and issues and most of these have been resolved with endless patches and compiled into what we now know as Emporer Edition (plus a few very small DLC thrown in to make it seem like it was packaged this way).

The game itself is actually amazing. Great thundering sound which scales as you zoom in and out of battles. Amazing almost lifelike campaign map visuals (if you crank everything up). Everything is also really scalable so those with potatoes can have a shot of this game if things are turned down appropriately.

The strategy and fun of picking a faction and competing for dominance on the grand campaign was also really satisfying. There is a lot of depth to the strategy here and amazingly diplomacy was a treat to play and worked really well. In fact on the harder difficulties, diplomacy is essentially a must. You need to curry favour with those stronger then you so you can buy your time until you are stronger. You need to form alliances in order to take on the larger powers that be. It really is a lot of fun.

However after adding Caesar in Gaul and some of the other DLC I seemed to have run into bugs. For example playing certain historical battles got me about 5-10FPS when the in game bench mark system with everything set to "very high" netted me 80FPS. After most factions have been discovered and much of the campaign map has been uncovered the game starts slowing down. Turns take longer, and even scrolling and moving units slows down. I had to turn things down in order to enjoy the grand campaign map.

Also when you start playing with 10K+ units in battles, the battles start slowing down to. And trust me getting to 10k battles doesn't actually take that long. I had to turn more settings down to really enjoy the full scale of it (zooming in and out, etc). Lastly were the bugs, when selected units would not move to certain areas and some buildings got stuck in building "forever". These are just a few I could remember.

All in all it's a great game but I feel it needs more optimization (not playing on a potato either). If you are willing to put up with some of these bugs and sacrifice some graphic quality settings for the late game then give this a go, but I would recommend it on sale NOT at full price.

Aside from the DLC issue(Seriously? You know damn well that I want to play as Sparta and I gotta pay $8, a seventh of the game's full price for three factions that should be part of the game.), the game runs bug free and the animations for combat are wonderful. A.I is not complete trash so battle's are a challenge which is good. Diversity amongst the Greek City States is something that I greatly appreciate so the hoplites don't essentially curbstomp all infantry which is something I found somewhat annoying in Rome 1. Game's price is a bit steep considering it's age(Coming up on 3 years if you're lazy like me) so I'd probably pick it up in a sale. Still, a great game but just a bit pricey.

Lets just... no... just no... I feel like the original rome had more features... Horrible release like so many other games atm, oh and day one DLC for factions that should be free? sure.. I could probably get into this game as of writing this review, with a bunch of mods. But CA has truly stopped thinking about the gamers and started thinking about the best way possible to squeeze as much money out of the hardcore fans. Its really just not fair considering Total War is the only franchise ruling this game genre.

Really disappointing..

Me after completing the Grand Campaign:

"They said Carthage could never be conquered.."
"They said Syracuse could never be humbled.."
"They said Arevaci could never be tamed.."
"... Now they say nothing."

Rome was not patched in a day - Some guy

That's the raw truth, you know. Ever since the huge pile of bullsh bugs and unbalances this game was upon release, things are a lot different now. And for the best.

The full package of Rome II: Emperor Edition includes a Grand Campaign, 4 DLC Campaigns, 9 gameplay packs, 10 million dollars, a prostitu, never mind, I think you get the point. Some of these DLCs are free and others are a bit too pricey for what they offer. My advice? get them during steam sales.

For the sake of briefness, we will mostly stick to the Grand Campaign. You got a map stretching from the Brittanic Isles and Iberia to Northern Africa and Bactria. The faction you choose will be somewhere inside this vast landscape, and your goal is to fulfill certain objectives to beat the game. The map is historically accurate, and please, show some understanding and don't complain about certain "historical cities" missing, if every aspect of history was added in this game, we would have a giant mess to deal with that would be pretty unplayable.

The gameplay is pretty complex. As your faction's leader you got access everywhere: from internal politics between parties and dynasties, to economy, to constructing new buildings, armies, navies, to recruiting agents, to foreign policies and much more. You have so much to do and so many ways to destroy or subjugate your enemies, you will never be bored. Every playthrough is unique and always something new and different happens, requiring your skills to take care of it. Diplomacy, economy, military, they all are the means to an end. And you have to learn how to use them properly.

When is comes to AI things are a bit obvious: it's completely predictable. The AI does this certain loop: build big armies, attack neighbours, refuse 80% of the time to trade, repeat. Seriously, no idea why it's so impossible to trade with other factions in this game. You have to make huge coin offers that will obliterate your coffers and most of the times, it's just not worth it. Particularly, I can't recall Rome as a faction to ever accept my trade offers. What a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s they are.

As for the battle AI, things are better there. The enemy actually adapts to your tactics, trying to counter your movements and is not afraid to use dirty tactics to finish you off (like using huge amounts of javelins or hit-and-run tactics with cheap units). If you don't know what you are doing or take too long to come up with a proper strategy and battle plan, the AI will proudly march back home with your general's head mounted on a spear. SPOILER ALERT: pikes and horse archers beat anything. Kind of.

Not gonna lie though, the game is BEAUTIFUL. The sounds are top notch, the soldiers are detailed, the animations very cool and there are thousands of soldiers on the battlefield, ready to slaughter each other for your amusement. Combine it with graphics mods and all you have to do is order a roman armor from ebay to complete your immersion. It's simply that good.

Rome II still has several flaws, many of them fixed by Attila. That doesn't mean the game is unplayable, in fact it's extremely enjoyable and has a tremendous amount of replayability. Trying out new factions with different playstyle, take different courses than your last playthrough, epic, massive scale battles and cunning diplomacy combine in an amazing package of fun. And for those that want to take it more competitive, there's also the option to play online.

I know a large amount of people hate on this game (I think its one of the lowest rated Total War games ever)...and at release it was so buggy that it would make you vomit, it was the classic example of a failed launch. However, with the launch of the Emperor Edition and mods.. "DEI"(Dresden Shot out to you and thank you for saving this game!) and numerous others it quickly became one of my favorite games. With my 700+ hours in game if you enjoy strategy games...you will like and love it like me! My wife hates it, but what does she know about strategy and legions damnit!..hahaha! It is worth picking it up if your a fan of the time period and enjoy strategy.

After playing from ROME 1 to Medieval 2 to Empire to Napoleon to Shogun 2... this is the worst total war I have ever play... its just simply not interesting at all and boring... the family system, its boring... the traits, its nothing special... it's not interesting as the previous total wars... and i dont understand - why all the units from different faction doesn't look much diferent? and the technologies... is damn boring... it shouldn't be that way... is very disappointing and this is the first total war that make me feel bored JUST AFTER 7 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY!!

Overall, I believe that this game is good. Obviously it could be improved in certain areas such as battle map and DLCs. But if your looking for a fun stratagy game with great poilitics and massive battles in the roman era this game is for you.
