The Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack is a new playable campaign for ROME II, which rivals the original ROME II Grand Campaign in both scope and scale. The Imperator Augustus Campaign Pack is set in 42 BC during the chaotic aftermath of Caesar’s grisly murder. The republic remains whole, but its soul is divided as three great men, the members of the Second Triumvirate, hold the future of Rome in the palms of their hands.

Octavian, Caesar’s adoptive son and the heir to his legacy.

To make a long story short, this was a great game that now does not work. They make it 75% off because it won’t load. Read the forum on this game. Everyone is having trouble getting this game to work lately. If you look into the trouble shooting forum, there are numerous pins for ways to fix the crash problem…. However they are pins from the past that are generic for old crash issues. NONE of them fixes work for the recent issue. Don’t waste your money, because steam will not give you a refund. They hide behind their hours played policy. I guess we’re renting these games, not buying them.

After not playing this on Launch, because of the "Problems" I heard of, I finally bought this game with the 75% discount summer sale, and definitely worth the money, and this comes from a original Rome TW player and Medieval II TW, both of those games have a dear place in my heart, both for fun and nostalgic reason.

PROS:

Region system: Slightly harder to get into, but overall easier to manage your country once it gets larger

DIPLOMACY SYSTEM: IT WORKS!? I played as a germanic tribe, became friends with other germanic tribes I shared the same blood with, (which is an actual trait). And after many turns of becoming their trade partners, defensive alliance and non-aggression pact. (And having considerable power) I managed to form a Confederation with them, which means you get their land & armies. And so... tribes join forces and form into an empire. And this is actually balanced, it doesn't always work, It's just that it's not impossible like it was to force a country into becoming Vassals in Medieval II. There is also Client states & satrapies. In short, diplomacy may not be perfect, but it is without doubt more advanced than previous TW titles, and it makes sense.

CAMPAIGN MAP: It looks good, forests, clouds, pretty little villages, but I prefer a more simplitistic campaign map, where i can clearly see where my armies and cities are, instead of graphical details, but I don't mind. It looks nice, and seeing the cities on campaign map, then fighting a battle in them in "Battle-Mode" is pretty cool, since it seems every city has a unique layout and look to it. Good job!

MANAGEMENT: There is actually more to manage compared to older titles, and it proves a decent challenge even on Easy difficulty, keeping your population happy is a hardship that reminds me of Civ 5, but in the long run, it is actually really fun, you have to keep track of Culture differences, what you build in your city actually matters, you need to make sure you have enough food, food surplus is REWARDING, with faster unit refreshment and higher city growth, the Technology tree could be more exciting, but it's an appreciated feature, and someone destroying your buildings with a spy can be frustrating. But it all makes keeping your population happy and your empire under control more rewarding.

ARMY STANCE: Small little features like this is what makes it better than older titles, it is a much appreciated feature where you can set your army recruited by a general in a stance, Forced March, increased movement speed on campaign, Ambush: Hide and prepare for an ambush, in a dense or light forest for greatest chance, ambushes are quite fun, fast phased and exciting, then we have the Raid stance, you need to make sure you are in another country when doing this, since it decreases happiness, but there is nothing better than raiding as a barbaric tribe, 10/10 immersion, and gives you gold! and finally the Fortify stance. Which is the modern version of building a Fort. Defending a fort placed on a strategical point, where you also get Deployables, (barricades, iron traps, flame traps, caltrops) to place out, and it's actually fun!


WIN CONDITION: Not that big of a deal, but extremely fun for me, gives you 2 other ways to win than Military Domination, Cultural Victory, and Economic Victory.

BATTLES: And so the reason that Total War stands out from all the other Strategy Games, and real time battles! It feels a bit overwhelming controlling many armies at the same time, but that doesn't need to be a bad thing, It's a practise thing.
Naval and land battles at the same time is the best thing ever, seeing enemy reinforcements coming with ships, and then sailing the ships up at the shore, while fighting on land, adds that extra immersion.

Learning how to best defeat your enemy armies is always fun, and being skilled is insanely rewarding, the best feeling in the world, is being able to positively effect your campaign because of your amazing skills at battles. These battles also prove an immersive and cinematic value that is hard to find elsewere. But no matter how good a general you are, sometimes you get overwhelmed, if your enemy has x3 times your size of army, it is OVER!

CONS:

Messy UI, sometimes even hard to see what army you have targeted because of the unit portraits.

Unit Diversity, yes, we have Roman, Punic, Hellenistic, Eastern, Celtic & Germanic culture differences, but many of the units sadly look the same, and while we have unique units like Crocodile Cultists, Wardogs, Elephants, Berserkers, Cataphracts, Legionaries. But apart from these, all empires / tribes sharing the same culture and beyond, have about the same units. Because of Historical accuracy, it can be forgiven, but even ripping things off from the history books, they could have made more exciting units and diversity.

Naval Battles, yes, they are good for immersion, and catapult ships are cool and all, but they can get a bit stale and clunky, especially smaller ship battles, there isn't much to control, just sit back relax, activate Cinematic Mode and watch.

Unit AI is something we all expected would get better with time, in 2004 we said, "Oh my, I wonder how advanced this is going to be in 10 years". But sadly not much have changed in that regard, but the awesome animations and the Cinematic View distracts me too much to notice that one guy literally standing there fighting with his Imaginary Friend Paco..

Grand Campaign country choices, there are a total of 8 different eastern empires & greece states you can play, but somehow there are no tribes/countries in Iberia you can play, except a Chartagian outside city, and there are only 2 different playable TRIBES in the Gaul and Germanic area of the map, I would have hoped for more, but that is nothing mods can't fix.


Slightly overpriced with all the DLC, at least 50% discount is worth it

Getting into the game; The only reason I bought this was because I grew up with the older titles, and even playing them, It was a lot to learn at the start, with many new features, I came into this game already knowing how to build cities, armies, and attack enemies. But I cannot imagine how hard it must be coming into this game not knowing anything, especially with the somewhat confusing UI, it will take a while to learn, and you cannot brainlessly faceroll your way to Rome like with the older TW titles either, and completely ignoring city management, your population will cause uproar, they will starve, and your economy will fall, so it will take a while to learn the game if you are 100% new. But in the end, if this looks exciting, and the idea of this game sounds exciting. Grand real-time epic battles, with an even more epic Campaign of glory and conquest, try it!

CONCLUSION: I had a very good time with this game, and will have many more until Medieval 3 Total War comes around.

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!
If i like this mod when its way more when it's Modded to ♥♥♥♥ (Shout out to Radious and those awesome Legion Mods), then CA has clearly done something wrong. Now before i get into too much, i ♥♥♥♥ing love this game, but this is seriously tough love. Even years after their seriously awful release, the game is no where near the game they promised. CA has pretty much all forgotten about this game just like they did with Empire and to make matters worse they created Attila just a couple of years after this which had its own problems.
Most of the bugs aren't in the campaign anymore but sure as hell hinder multiplayer campaign which is the way you wanna play it since the Vanilla AI is so ♥♥♥♥ still, it just doesnt offer a serious challenge, just seemingly cheats still and its way to predictable, when its not its just damn right broken, and ffs...how many Total War games have you seen with decent diplomacy?
Im not gonna get into all the details since it's been done to hell but even years after and all the bloody patches (INSERT ROME WASN'T PATTCHED IN A ♥♥♥♥ING DAY JOKE HERE) i still can't recommend this failure. If your going to get it, get it a discount and get Mods, they make the game so much better.

Very fun. One of the best TW games I have played. Lot's of people say it was a dissappoitment, but I don't see it. I played this with a friend on multiplayer, me as Macedon and him as Sparta, and we flourished together and conquered the Easern region of the map. Very fun and re-playable.

Playing and loving every total war game (besides Empire...)

vanilla 2016:

+ awesome graphics
+ huge scale
+ loving the time period
+ a lot of different units/types and factions
+ after a lot of patches an 'OK' AI
+ acceptable loading times

- skill system (+ improvable with mod)
- battle difficulty hard++ : unfair buffs for the AI which kill the balance/fun (+ improvable with mod)
- AI still stupid in so much ways...
- some regular disconnects/crashs in multiplayer (but it's not thaaaat bad)

I am saying this for years, after each and every total war title:

Make a new TW-Game (e.g. Rome III). Change NOTHING, keep the Engine. keep most of the content...
AND PUT LIKE EVERYTHING IN IMPROVING THE A.I. and i will pay you GLADLY 50€ for this game!

Rome 2 was extremely bugged upon release and infuriated countless fans, including die hard Total War fans. With the release of the Emperor Edition, most of all these bugs and performance problems had been successfully adressed, making this entry one of the best that total war had and has ever seen.

To this day, I still enjoy replaying campaigns just for the heck of it. Meaning bingeplaying for weeks at end and still not getting bored.

10.000+ hours of Total War and 1.000+ of Rome 2 alone speak for themselves.

I reccomend this game only if you were a fan of the original Rome: Total War and would like to play a more graphically-improved sequel. However, be warned that the base game is bland for the most part. I would highly reccomend using mods, because you will find that this game has a few missing features from its predecessor, Rome I.

Also, before you buy, you might want to consider a few problems on this game:

1) Compared to Rome I, Rome II's campaign is watered down and has some of the dumbest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t you could ever imagine. Remember when I said the game feels bland without mods? Here's why:

-There is a limit to how many armies a faction can have on this game. If you want to increase that limit, you have to conquer a specific number of regions. This really is the dumbest BS you can add to a game like this. The devs lack brain cells and fail to realise that this limit they added is useless and just makes the game dumbed down. You should be able to build as many armies as you want in regards to the state of your economy, just like the older titles. Adding an army limit to all the factions on this game means that you might be fighting less battles than you did in Rome I. The developers were too stupid to realize that if we wanted to fight less battles, we could have just used the auto resolve button just like the previous titles. There's no strategy involved with a limit like this...

-On the campaign map, you can't split armies into smaller groups like you could in the previous titles. This is another incredibly stupid feature that makes the campaign overly simplified. For example, let's say an enemy army containing only 3 units shows up in your territory, and the nearest army you have to counter them contains 20 units. Since this army is so puny and would be destroyed in no time with, say, three of your higher quality units, you'd think it would make more sense to just send in 3 units to counter that army. Well, in this game, you can't do that anymore. You have to move your ENTIRE ARMY if you want to get rid of them, which is a complete waste of time because you could be using the rest of your units for more useful purposes. You simply can't split armies to cover more territory, scout unknown parts of the campaign map, or provide support to another army. You're just commanding completely immobile armies that have had their strategic potential neutered by this ♥♥♥♥ing stupid mechanic.

-Just like armies on the campaign are unable to split up, they are also unable to merge with other armies. This means that if an enemy army containing 20 units, for example, is in your territory, and you have 2 armies that each contain 10 units, you can't merge them into one strong army of 20 units to take on the enemy army. Instead, you'll have to go through the BS of having your two separate armies stuck on two different sections of the battle map, wasting precious time trying to get them where you need them. Once again, the strategic value of this game has been further watered down...

-It is mandatory for every single army to have a general. Now, I don't mind having generals in all of my armies, but it'd be nice if you could have some of them under the command of captains and turn them into generals after a few battles like in Rome I and Medieval II.

-You no longer have the choice to build walls in your settlements. Only a certain number of cities will have walls by default. Once again, the strategic value of this game has been watered down a by the diminished brain cells of the developers.

2) The soundtrack of the base game is your bland, run of the mill dramatic tryhard collection of the works of a composer desperately trying to become the new John Williams. The developers should have kept the composer from Rome I. Thankfully, there is a mod for this game that allows you to use the soundtrack from Rome I itself.

3) Voice acting on this game is ♥♥♥♥. In Rome I, different factions from different parts of the campaign map actually had their own accents, giving them a unique identity. Instead, there are only two accents on this game. Basically, 'civilized' factions like the Romans and Athenians have the same old, plain and boring British accent. 'Barbarian' factions like the Britons and Suebi just sound like a bunch idiots.

4) The Greek City States are a mandatory DLC, so you can forget playing as Sparta or Athens without paying extra money. CA, like your average AAA developer these days, just loves to manipulate its fanbase by locking content on a game and calling it "extra" content.

5) In battles, projectiles fired from archers and slingers don't look deadly and fast at all. The devs came up with the stupid idea of putting tracers on every single projectile thrown. None of them look dangerous at all, and when you zoom in on the unit of soldiers being attacked by arrows or rocks, the sound effects don't sound like any of these projectiles were able to hit anything with a great amount of force.

The only good things about this game are this:

1) Better graphics.
2) There are mods.

Though this games launch was absoulutely attrocious, the emperor edition fixes the majority of the problems. Though many problems are still prevalent which of course can be fixed with a few good mods. I have put in a good 200 hours into this game and I greatly reccomend this product.

Pro's
-Runs like a dream.
-Looks beautiful.
-Multiplayer battles are extremely intense.
-Great modding community.
-Great setting (Nothing feels as good as sacking Rome).
-Campaign is one of the best (A proper working Auto-Resolve button).

Con's
-Unit rosters are a bit lacking (Mods fix this).
-The Campaigns mid to late game becomes way too easy.
-Town battles (Auto-Resolving fixes this).
-Generals die like flies (4 turns per year mod fixes this).
-DLC Market is attrocious (You have to pay for Blood&Gore!!!)

This game sucked ♥♥♥ when it was first released. I consider myself a total war feind, i was hooked in 0'4 when the first rome came out. I was 11 years old and i fell in love. I got amost 2000 of hours played on Rome 2 as well. Without mods this game is pretty lame. But thankfully Steam workshop is a divine intervention for gamers everywhere. By just a damn click of the mouse i can add mods with ease. ANything before the decmber '14 patch wont work becaasuse that was the last update for the game. Definetely the best game so far mods included. i got attila too and that game sucksssss....... Dont bother buying it use the rise of christianity mod, it's set in the same time period.

While many enjoy the Total War games because of their unique blend of real-time strategy combat and standard-setting visuals or their incredibly high production values, what makes them truly fantastic is that one can easily invest hundreds of hours into just one entry of the series and likely never grow tired of its addicting mix of fighting and management. I have spend many hours on Rome II and yet I still keep coming back for more. Whether it be to try a new faction, a different early game strategy, change up my research priorities, focus more on naval prowess rather than raw manpower, empower trade over combat as a continent-spanning empire or mix up my tactics in the battles themselves.
The Total War games are packed with content, like the unique scenario battles that represent a key conflict in history, narrative campaigns and tutorial campaigns that each require a few hours or more of your time at the very least while presenting a mostly distinct experience, many entirely separate factions each with their own various traits at both a regional and cultural level, and the grand campaigns.

Each of these is a massive undertaking and has almost endless permutations for the path to total victory, dependent on any number of the factors mentioned above. You can even use the skirmish battle system to try out all different tactics and unit combinations from any of the numerous factions present in the game against a battle AI that you can freely adapt to your tastes in terms of difficulty. Lastly, Rome II offers an expansive suite of multiplayer options to back up its gargantuan single-player offerings, allowing you to play challenging battles against your friends or compete for global domination through the usual turn-based campaign system, even if the multiplayer isn't as functional as I would like! I have put many hours in every single Total War game and each new entry is both fresh enough and packed with quality to easily justify that kind of investment time and again - truly, this is a franchise that knows how to eat up the small hours of the day. If ever you needed a game to kill time in while trying out multiple different approaches to victory, allowing you to succeed either through making friends or destroying enemies in equal measure, then Rome II has been tailor made to match your desires.

By far, the best game i have ever played! I started with Shogun when it first came out, then Rome! wow, that game was played from release, then Rome 2 came out. The MODS are endless, you can have so much freedom and the game play is highly addictive. I find the chat forums or multi player a struggle though.
