Bringing all of GameMaker: Studio™’s best features and modules together, GameMaker: Studio™ MASTER COLLECTION gives you the power to create, test, monetize and distribute games to iOS, Android, Windows, Windows Store, Windows Phone 8, OSX and HTML5.

Key features:

Dedicated, game-focused IDE
The GameMaker: Studio™ IDE has all you need to deal with fonts, sounds, images and music, as well as other resources needed to create a game. It enables you to define game entities (known as 'objects') and their behaviours in an intuitive, event-driven way and has an easy to use drag-and-drop interface.

Powerful scripting language
With GameMaker: Studio™'s built-in GameMaker Language (GML), you can control every last detail of your game – path finding, physics, object interaction, particles, data structures and more …
And should you find that even that is still not enough for your project, you can easily expand GameMaker: Studio™ by using GML, JavaScript and Dynamic-Link Library Extension Packages.

Multi-format export
When combined with format-specific modules, GameMaker: Studio™ can take your game's single codebase and produce ready-to-run executables and apps for multiple platforms, with a single click.
With modules already available for Steam Workshop, Windows, Windows 8, Mac OS X, iOS*, Android*, Windows Phone 8* and HTML5* - and more to be announced soon - GameMaker: Studio™ is the fastest and simplest way to develop multi-platform games for mobile devices, home computers and the Web.

The YoYo Compiler
Games written in Studio can now harness the full speed of the CPU with the new native YoYo Compiler (YYC), allowing projects to run up to 100x faster than before, across all native platforms supported by Studio. Unlocking new possibilities in CPU intensive areas such as artificial intelligence, procedural techniques, real time lighting, enhanced physics, real time geometry deformation, collision and data manipulation.

Shaders
Fully integrated, totally cross platform shader support allows you to write shaders once, and then deploy them on every platform that supports them. This powerful system allows full access to low level shaders, while still letting Studio do the heavy lifting and keeping totally cross platform. The built in editor has been extended to have full colour syntax highlighting and intelli-sense for shaders, making creation a breeze.

Source Control
GameMaker: Studio™ also includes a comprehensive source control scheme so that working on a project within a team is easier than ever before.
Currently incorporating Subversion (SVN), and with more solutions on the way, GameMaker: Studio™ is the only development tool your team needs to get things done in record time.

Developer Services
To help easily monetize games, we’ve given developers unprecedented access and removed the technical hassle of connecting them with some of the biggest advertisers, analytics and engagement services on mobile and web.

GameMaker:Studio is an amazing software, I realy reccomend it for somebody who want to learn how to make a good game, for free. But here's a minus that I have to mention, and it's fact that you have to spent at leat 100 hours in the software to know the basics. Mostly if you want to learn how to use it, you have to read whole HELP menu in the GameMaker, or watch tutorials. Since 1999 this software is one of the best(if not the best of all) softwares to program your own game, but, I reccomend to download it from their official page, Why? Well, steam version have minuses. For example if you want to buy access for HTML5, Android, Windows 8 or Mac. You have to buy them for huge amount of money. So if you want to buy all of them. I reccomend to buy the Non-Steam Version.

Also if you would for a proof that the software is great and supports many things from your imagination:

Play my game! It have gamepad support as well as shows what game maker can do.

Good introduction to programming, while still useful for making actual games. Don't get if you're looking to make a 3D game, because those features are extremely limited.

Back when I was 9, I so badly wanted to create video games myself, when I was 10 I coded basic Batch file games, Scratch games when I was 11, and so on. Now, I have started trying GameMaker, at first it made no sense whatsoever, but now after watching several tutorials, I made a game called "AsteroidZ". Quite proud of myself, I am planning to use this software more often.

No other software has a time:gameplay created ratio as good as this one. If you know how to use it, you can make a playable prototype of any arcade-like game you can imagine in an afternoon.

Just keep in mind that GML's quirks encourage a coding style that would be a bit horrible if carried over to any other language.

A great piece of software that's easy for beginners to learn and powerful for experienced devs. It is a little bit limited in what types of games it can make, but this piece of software is responsbile for hits such as Hotline Miami and Undertale, so I wouldn't underestimate its power.

Pros:
-Easy to use.
-Has plenty of advanced features.
-User friendly interface.
-Helpful user guide, going into depth of each and every feature.
-Has everything you need to build a game in one bundle.
-Free!

Cons:
-Can get a little glitchy at times.
-As mentioned earlier, a little bit limited.

Overall, if you are dreaming of being a game developer, start with this software first. It is likely the easiest software usable to make a game and you'll see yourself as well as your games improving the more you use it. With the advanced features available, friendly user interface and shortage of cons, I would give this software an 8.5/10.

An extremely versitile game developing software, and the best part is that it's free!

My thoughts:
The coding language is quite similar to Java (So having some background knowledge would definately help), but easily accessible if you want to put in the hours to learn it.
I would definitely recommend learning GML instead of using the drag and drop system, it opens up whole new doors for programming your game.
The sprite editor isn't that bad :D
Sometimes can be a bit buggy, just close and reopen your project.

Seriously though, I made a dungeon crawler for a school project, and aced it with GMS. Hopefully my game will go up on Steam one day!

TL;DR, just get it, it's free, and if you want to program a brilliant 2D game, this is the software for doing that.
Thanks for reading, Pyro out.

so, um. This thing is GREAT, no mistake. i personnally wanted to be a game dev when i was younger. of couse, i could never do it. Unity? WHAT. i didnt understand a thing. and i couldnt find any game-makers with my large budget of 0.62$$ CDN.
I had found this game "Crashlands" by a 3-brother independent studio, Butterscotch shenanigans.
I asked them what they used for making games, and they answered gamemaker studio.
I tried this thing. It became easy. my very first game was just a platformer. nothing new.
But then things became more complicated, and i always found a way around it. I love this thing. Get it.

i have made around... whazit?
3 games.

My very first game was... HORRIBLE.
it was jsut to learn the basics. because i had to use remaning sprites i found on my computer, it was smiley faces turning and moving if you hit the right arrow key. The background was a scrolling sh*t shotgun.
Lets cut that out.

(all of these games are still in my data)

My first game was just a platformer called Basic Platformer. you are a block, there are walls and collisions, and get through a puzzle. it was very easy, and well i gave up on it. i just dropped it and said "screw it this game sucks."
This i never uploaded it to workshop, because i was using the independent version of GM:S, i didnt know at the time a steam version existed.

My second game was a 2d top down game called Thingamabob. your a square, and you need to shoot circles, while barfing out 4pixel wide bullets. Although my friends said it was quite good and addicting, i dropped the project, as i didnt think it was good enough

And now im working on my 3rd game. its a rework to thingamabob, but better. its currently in heavy WIP. (im not working on it, rather on something else)
But while deveoping my game,i found gamemakerstudio ON STEAM.
i realized you could upload games and download games and play 'em.
Wow.
Wow.

anyway, if you want to try my game, here it is:
