You have extremely limited access. The minimum you need to pay for something that isn't for just the steam workshop is 100$

Very simple program, surprisingly powerful for how easy it is. Essentially, how it works is you create a room an fill it with objects. How? First, you sprite the objects, create the object and assign the sprites, tell the objects how to react to an event. (e.g. when the frame updates, when the game starts, when the object is created, etc.) It suports Drag-and-Drop events-and-actions coding and text-based coding at the same time, meaning that it's perfect for beginners, pros, and those in between. I am not good at coding in the sense that I don't know any powerful-enough lanuages to make video games, but I made a fairly decent platformer with this software. It also gives you access to other games people make via workshop and has a few tutorials, meaning it's rather easy to figure everything out one way or another.

Don't let the play hours fool you

Been using this program for years. WAY longer then before this ever came onto steam
for years and probably have put hundereds of hours into this. And probably even hundereds of hours into into the original game maker Pro version which used to be like $25 that came out before studio. BUT I dont use the steam version because I own Studio Pro before it came onto steam and I cant transfer over my liceanse which I thought I would be able to but without a doubt lets get right into it.

Game maker Studio is a very easy to use and learn game making program that allows you to make 2D game. yes technically you can make 3D games but I remember that being a huge pain in the ♥♥♥ that just wasnt worth it and its better off using a different engine for that.

Now whats the difference between this (game maker studio) and game maker studio professional. Well, basically studio limits a lot of tools that you can use and things that you can change like how the loading menu looks when the game starts up or how the desktop icon looks, other then that it mostly jsut limits a lot of the more advanced tools. BUT that dosnt mean regular studio is worthles, no no you can still get a massive amount of use out of it and still make a lot of basic 2D games. To be honest, even after upgrading to pro I never used a lot of the advanced tools that much it was just nice to have but going back to game maker now years later I think I can give them a go. The whole pro thing is mainly for publishing rights for selling your game and what not, thats were most of the money is going.

But basicly how does game maker work? well it uses a wierd way of making games were you dont need to actually code (but you still can) by using drag and drop boxes with changable properties that you can change per object and sprites that you can bind to objects and levels which you can easily click and place objects in. Pretty simple and easy to figure out. Hell 9 year old me was able to do it I bet you guys could.

Game Maker Studio is one of the best 2D game engines out there.
If you want to do some serious development though you will need to code!
Drag and Drop won't take you too far!

GMstudio may only be used for 2D games but dont underestimate its power. Some really good games like undertale and miamihotline were made with this so you can make great games too. You just have to use your imagination and creatitvity to make innovative 2D games.
