Back when I was 9, I so badly wanted to create video games myself, when I was 10 I coded basic Batch file games, Scratch games when I was 11, and so on. Now, I have started trying GameMaker, at first it made no sense whatsoever, but now after watching several tutorials, I made a game called "AsteroidZ". Quite proud of myself, I am planning to use this software more often.

Being a game nut and also someone that loves to program i have always dabbled with different types of softeware and programming languages to get my fix of game development. I have tried Unity, UE and other types of programs similar and for some reason i find my self coming back to game maker.

I know how to code in languages such as C++/VB/C# but i find GML or Game Maker Language very nice and slick.

If you like 2D games then this is the software for you although 3D games can be made it is more designed for 2D games.

GML is easy to learn and once you get the basics down there is no reason you can't whip up a game for others to play, ofcourse GML dose have it's advanced side to it but if you don't want to go that far into it then you don't need to and i guess that is what i like about this software and the language it ships with, unlike C++ and the others.

Buy it? No, stick with the regular version.
However, this does not mean I don't recommend it. It's hard to create a good game, but the thing is, it's super easy to create one with Gamemaker. Literally under an hour even if you know what you're doing.
I recomend it because it gives you options and does hold weight for a game platform. You won't get as much flexability as in say, Unity, but the ease of use and ability to create professional projects is none-of-the-less present.
Just, for the love of god, don't use collision events in a platformer. Nobody likes drag and drop for a reason, even though it is convenient and useful.

I'm a noob, but I have a good friend who is proficent (not great, but nicely mediocre) w/ C+ and unity. He love GMX because it's VERY user friendly and fast. I love it because it's like learning C- with training wheels on. To be good, it still requires coding (the drag and drop very helpful, but limited), but they make it very painless.

And the best part is, now the two of us can colaborate. I highly recommend this if you have the patience to actually do the tutorials and learn.

Speaking of which, look up Shaun Spaulding's youtube tutorials. He's an amazing teacher and will get you up and running in no time.

GMstudio is very good application to play community games. I spended here more than 24 hours and i can say: "you can find interesting games here".

An extremely versitile game developing software, and the best part is that it's free!

My thoughts:
The coding language is quite similar to Java (So having some background knowledge would definately help), but easily accessible if you want to put in the hours to learn it.
I would definitely recommend learning GML instead of using the drag and drop system, it opens up whole new doors for programming your game.
The sprite editor isn't that bad :D
Sometimes can be a bit buggy, just close and reopen your project.

Seriously though, I made a dungeon crawler for a school project, and aced it with GMS. Hopefully my game will go up on Steam one day!

TL;DR, just get it, it's free, and if you want to program a brilliant 2D game, this is the software for doing that.

No other software has a time:gameplay created ratio as good as this one. If you know how to use it, you can make a playable prototype of any arcade-like game you can imagine in an afternoon.

Just keep in mind that GML's quirks encourage a coding style that would be a bit horrible if carried over to any other language.

GML is a really easy language to learn (especially coming in with knowledge in lua and c#) but also extremely useful. Using it I'm confident I can make any game I want to without needing to be skilled in complex coding. That's pretty powerful.

A great piece of software that's easy for beginners to learn and powerful for experienced devs. It is a little bit limited in what types of games it can make, but this piece of software is responsbile for hits such as Hotline Miami and Undertale, so I wouldn't underestimate its power.

Pros:
-Easy to use.
-Has plenty of advanced features.
-User friendly interface.
-Helpful user guide, going into depth of each and every feature.
-Has everything you need to build a game in one bundle.
-Free!

Cons:
-Can get a little glitchy at times.
-As mentioned earlier, a little bit limited.

Overall, if you are dreaming of being a game developer, start with this software first. It is likely the easiest software usable to make a game and you'll see yourself as well as your games improving the more you use it. With the advanced features available, friendly user interface and shortage of cons, I would give this software an 8.5/10.
