Guacamelee! is a metroidvania style platformer bursting with Mexican flavour as you play a farmhand turned Luchador through beautiful and colourful environments as he try's to rescue the Governors Daughter and attempts to keep the worlds of the living and the dead from combining into one.
You'll start off knowing your basics, how to brawl and jump around and steadily become introduced to new enemies requiring different tactics and new skills to help you along your way. The pacing is great, just as you begin to master a technique the game introduces a new ability and a new set of challenges to overcome. By the end of the game, you'll be weaving all of your abilities together, evading traps and fighting enemies from two dimensions through some challenging but fair levels. The controls are solid and the animations are very fluid allowing you to chain combo's together seamlessly whether defeating enemies or manoeuvring through the world.
The only slight quibble I had with the game (and certainly not enough that it dampened the experience) were a couple of sidequests, complete with ! Questclamation marks, which while they could have been poking fun...they seemed a little out of place and ruined the lovely flow the game otherwise has.
The main game is a decent length for a first run through, clocking in at around 6 hours for me. On top of that, there are a handful of secrets still left to discover and some genuinely tough challenges to attempt to beat, adding to the value.
A recommended and enjoyable game from start to finish. Squeeze into your latex trousers, dust off your mask and get in the ring!
