"A fine example indeed of modern Metroidvania, in which you must use your luchadore wrestling powers to bypass obstacles and enemies. Reference heavy."

About This Game

Guacamelee! Gold Edition is a Metroid-vania style action-platformer set in a magical Mexican inspired world. The game draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore, and features many interesting and unique characters.

Guacamelee! builds upon the classic open-world Metroid-vania style of games, by adding a strong melee combat component, a new dimension switching mechanic, and cooperative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story. The game also blurs the boundaries between combat and platforming by making many of the moves useful and necessary for both of these.

Travel through a mystical and mysterious Mexican world as a Luchador using the power of your two fists to battle evil. Uncover hidden wrestling techniques like the Rooster Uppercut, and Dimension Swap to open new areas and secrets.

Key Features

  • Use combat moves for both fighting enemies and platforming challenges
  • Swap between multiple overlapping dimensions (World of the Living and the World of the Dead)
  • "El Infierno" level expansion. Brave the fires of El Infierno and prove yourself in a series of challenges to unlock powerful new costumes for Juan and Tostada
  • Player costumes! Swap costumes to change the attributes of your Hero, and obtain new achievements
  • Steam Achievements, Leaderboards, Cloud Save, and Big Picture Mode
  • Trading Cards
  • Create new custom costumes and share these with others via Steam Workshop
  • Drop in/out 2-Player local Co-operative play for the entire story
  • Chickens. Lots and lots of Chickens

I got the game long time ago in the Humble Bundle and found it while sorting my Game Library.

Originally I only wanted to farm the Trading Cards and gave it a short try, but I just couldn't stop playing and ended with a 5 hour session. This game is now one of my favourite skill based platformers. The difficulty increases at a perfect pace in my opinion. It's also nice that you visit old areas/levels after getting new skills, so you can reach secrets. At some points it's really hard to advance and you need to combine all skills you have curretnly available. I advice you to use a gamepad for this game, with a keyboard it might be very tricky and cause frustration. At least there is a great soundtrack with lots of different songs and they are not annoying when you are trying this one hard jump for the 50th time.

Some things that could imrpove the gaming experience would be more spoken dialogue, it's really alot ot read. Also some cut scenes and splash screens have a really annoying colour flashing, so I needed to close my eyes whenever they appeared before I got an epileptic seizure. :D

As I said earlier, I'm now 5 hours into the game and it feels like I achieveved alot, I would guess I'm at around 80% completion and I can't wait for tomorrow to finish the rest and get all the remaining achievements aswell. The game even has a Cooperation Mode that I will probably never try, but maybe it's interesting for some people.

The 'Super Turbo Championship Edition' (a polished version with some more content) is actually on sale now, so I would go ahead and buy it. Definitely worth the money if you enjoy platformers with a certain challenge.

This game is a pretty solid platformer with unique Mexican theme, good combos, nice but sometimes overdone humour, well created enemy types and some decent gameplay mechanics such as dimension swapping.

The bad part is that the game is not designed for people that don't have over average reflexes and platformer history. Tule Tree became a major problem for me and I couldn't get past it. I did a quick Google search and read the negative comments on Steam reviews and found out that it's not only my problem.

Also another thing to note is even though I used to be able to do every single combo in a Mortal Kombat game on PS2 and could get to some decent Fatality stages, the challenges that Giant Chicken (I don't remember its name) give became undoable after some point.

My Logitech F710 had some minor lag issues throughout the part I managed to complete, which I haven't experienced in any other games I played with that controller, but it wasn't that much of a problem except for hardcore platforming parts, such as in Tule Tree and the game had some problems reading the diagonal movement input.

I can only recommend this if only you're deeply into hardcore platformers or you want to enjoy a somewhat different artistic setting for a low price (I think you might be able to purchase it for $1-1key on trading sites and on different retailers). Otherwise, just stay away from it.

Super fun. Beware if you're colorblind.

I had a marathon couple of days playing this game; I enjoyed it immensely though I'm not the best platformer or combo-maker. The checkpoint locations were pretty forgiving and the gradually ratched up challenges made the game more fun than frustrating. Until the boss fight against Calaca, but for a very particular reason.

The Calaca boss fight mechanics rely entirely on twitch reactions to colored shields with zero room for error. For my particular kind of color blindness, I can only reliably detect the blue shield and the red shield. The green or yellow shields look identical; it's a 50/50 chance if I do the correct move to score a hit. Every time Calaca attacks his shield is a different color; a process of elimination cannot be used.

If you're partially colorblind, this fight will be more difficult for you. If you're completely colorblind, this fight will be nearly impossible to beat. You would have to stick with a single attack and count on your ability to avoid damage long enough for your random successes to eventually defeat Calaca's first form.

A significant portion of the population suffer from some form of color impaired vision. It's always a shame when game designers are ignorant or willfully disregard that.

One of the few good 2d Metroid-style games available on PC, although it's melee-based (if you couldn't tell by the title) instead of shooting.

Good: Combat is fun with all the combos you can pull off. Game is full of humor and video game references.

Bad: Has some really frustrating jumping puzzles where the game seems to turn from Metroid into Super Meat Boy. Certain bosses are really tough in comparison to the rest of the game's difficulty.

I love this game, but holy crap does it get insanely hard with its button combos that you will need to do (do combo 1-2-3 and 8 to JUMP over this high wallk and ATATCK!), just to advance the game. This drove me to the point I got so angry with it, I went to the main menu to lower the difficulty... only to find there is't a game difficulty settings.

wth?

So, I left the game for dead and moved on to other games. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this and got it during a sale.

For those that love a challenge, you will love this game.
Others that want to be entertained, be forewarned, it gets quite difficult later on in the game.

I would't recommend this game, on the basis that it does't even have a user set difficulty setting - which I hear only appears when you FINISH the game.

*shrug*
WTH indeed.

Meh, it's another in a long series of indie quirky throwback 2D platformers. Took about 4 hours to beat (hours played is low because some was offline). Couple funny jokes. Controls well. Has co-op. Unique visual style. Not much I can say about it other than it does its job well as a genre title, but unless you're a fan of the genre, this game won't offer you much you can't get from the likes of Shovel Knight and such, it's just very run-of-the-mill.

Well that's a good game. It's challenging, hard and unforgiving where it needs to be, has stunning vibrant colorful awesome graphics that entwine smoothly with the story; the control scheme is broad and a little confusing at times, but acceptable. Maybe a bit short (I've almost finished it in about 10 hours, with every side quest apart from the really long ones) and with a really little replay value, but a great experience nonetheless. 85/100

This is a very solid beat-em up platformer that doesn't dissapoint. The gameplay is challenging, yet rewarding. It's one of the few games that I wanted to get 100% on. It's full of humour, memes and references, reminding you that the plot shouldn't be taken too seriously. You learn an array of special moves and abilities as you progress through (including dimension swapping and chicken form), with exploration heavily rewarded.

Overall, this is fun, full of content for at least 12hrs, and very satisfying to complete.
Do yourself a favour and pick it up for about £1.50 at the next Steam Sale!

"Guacamelee!" features a great artistic and cultural style of gaming, with major replayability. This platformer beat 'em up, filled with comedy and an unexpected emotional turn in the story, I definitely recommend to amateurs and pros of all ages. The controls are smooth, the music is spot on, and, with co-op available, you'll want to play this game over and over until you discover all the secrets and beat the living out of Calaca again and again. 9/10
