the game is fine for the most part but i consider the elephant take down sequences that require archery to be complete bull sh#t , the arrows despawn whenever the elephant turns and your mostlikely being attacked so you are incapable of shooting the proper target and you spend mostof your time chasing the elephant only to fall off once you successfully get on top of one

I think there are many iterations of LOTR games out there. Some based on single movies. Some include them all. Many I've seen poorly adapt scenes from the movie into gameplay that doesn't always fit. Or they'll force levels and gameplay that doesn't really go with the movies at all.

The Lego LOTR game is great in that it encompasses all three films with stunning attention to detail. Just about every major sequence from the films is included in this game in one form or another, either as a cutscene, or as a cleverly incorporated aspect of gameplay. You name it. It's probably in there. Remember when the hobbits meet Aragorn for the first time and escape to Weathertop? Remember "second breakfast"? Well, there's a sequence of gameplay where you actually make second breakfast (which subsequently causes the ring wraiths to spot you). It can be that granular. It's amazing. Ultimately, if you're looking for a game that gives the most fulfilling gaming experience of actually playing through all three films in a single package (and you don't mind Lego looks and humor), then this game is for you. There are tons of characters and "treasures" to unlock. And what's great is being able to traverse an open-world Middle Earth (albeit it's a bit minaturized in scale).

My only negatives are the sometimes repetitive nature of gameplay. If you've played any other modern Lego game you'll know what I'm talking about. Also, horses. There are some moments you ride horses in between levels as a part of the story, but you can't spawn a horse on command which would be GREAT for free roam. Granted, there are quite a few quick-travel locations, but there's nothing really outside of a less-than-adequate nonessential item which helps you get around quicker.
Also, the buggyness. I don't know how common it is, but there were a few points where the game graphically glitched out that caused me to have to close out completely....which was hard because the menu became invisible at this point. Also, there was a level in which you control Frodo and Sam and have to collect Orc armor to disguise yourselves to escape. Usually, you can get a character to drop a disposable object from your inventory so that the other can pick it up. Well, in this particular situation, if you grab more of the armor pieces than the character needs, you will need to restart because the game won't let you drop it for the other character to pick it up.
There's also quite a few other sporadic blips and glitches that were kind of annoying but would take too long to mention them in a review, however, when the game was running smoothly, it was a blast.

SCREW THIS GAME AND ITS STUPID PLANKS.

Seriously if there is one complaint about this game (of which there are many) the one I would liuke to stress the most is that this is partially a platforming game; theres lots of clibing up towers and swinging from ropes and stuff. And wow does this game try its hardest to make you fail. And the thing is, it's not a challenging thing, it's a bug thing.

So imagine you're trying to cross a river thats about five feet across, and for whatever reason you tend to drown in water that is 2 feet deep. No matter, there are olf planks floating in the water for you to get across on - a good old fashioned jumping puzzle. But wait! Even though they are so close together you could probably just take a big step and get across, you cannot seem to jump to the next plank, as if there's an invisible wall around them. After the 17th try, you manage to get yourself from one plank to the next, realizing that theres only 3 more to go. Oh, and remember, if you mess up and fall, you go back to the river bank and start all over again.

Or how about another jumping puzzle where you have to jump from a cliff to a clearly reachable rope to swing across a gap? Seems easy enough to handle. But wait! To add some challenge, let's take to camera to the worst - and I mean absolute worst angle possible to it's impossible to gauge where you are relative to the rope. That'll leave ya guessing for a while, and everytime you miss and fall to the bottom, we'll let you plan you're next attempt while hiking all the way back up to try again.

Or how about we have you climb to the very top of the tower at Isengard for a prize? Well, in classic LEGO fashion, we're going to give you several different obstacles to overcome using many different characters together. It's a great idea, but not when your character swap system is so broken. When you change to another person of the Fellowship, instead of swapping the character you're using, it swaps the other companion for the desired character, switches you to them, and before you can switch back to the player you nearly had to the top, you bet he's already jumped off to get back to you. It renders the character-swapping "quick bar" nearly useless, and cripples any kind of puzzles where you need more than one character.

... not to mention, theres those damn planks again at the very top of that same tower to smack you down and crush your spirit.

This game is beautiful in its world design, the levels are cool, and the humor is as you would expect with a LEGO game, but holy crap is this game buggy. On several occasions I'd have to restart the game because accidntally walking over a certain rock somehow launched me into orbit and wouldn't let me come back down.

And every game is going to have a few little glitchy bits here and there, but these are so prevalent and obvious that I am very sure anyone at Tt that played this for more than twenty minutes noticed them. This leads to the suspicion that they saw the bugs and just didn't care enough to fix them before release - or any time in the four years it's been released.

Despite all that, I had a very enjoyable time with this. Bu i cannot recommend such a broken game to anyone, and I am shocked to see that so many people have. Only buy if it's on sale for $5 or less.

This is a great game, even after you have finished the story line there are still quests to be done. I highly recommend getting a PC compatible controller if you want to play, the keyboard controls are the worst for Lego games.

Anyway a huge thumbs up for me.

I played this game on the Xbox 360 when I was 8, and of course, I loved it, it was one if my favorite lego games ever, actually one favorite games ever, so when i spent my money on this game, I was very excited to play. I was very disapointed because I wasn't used to the controls. It was very different than a normal computer game and I had a hard time playing. Also, I tried to move a boulder on level 1, but for some reason it wouldn't move. I know it was supposed to move because like I said I have played this game before. So, I am sorry, but for me, my final answer is that the game was hard to control. So, I would recommend playing lego games on a console like and Xbox 360 or a Nintendo 3DS.

I'll make it short and sweet, since it's a LEGO game and everybody knows the fundamentals;

Great game, awful keyboard and mouse bindings. Use a controller, for your own sake.

I'm voting this not recommended, but only just.

On the gameplay side of things, it's mostly great. Plenty of things to do, great humor, LotR. However, there are a few headaches.

Here's my list of cons for gameplay:
*Planks. Why do these feel so difficult to move onto?
*Inventory. So cumbersome. I don't see why we can't use the radial menu for mithril items.
*Character swap. Sometimes you'll get stuck swapping between your player 1 and 2 characters. Other times you'll swap to your 2nd character who will then swap to the character you wanted. Both can result in losing your spot on a ledge. Then other times you'll have to loop through them for a long while to find the one you need or to open the giant menu of them.
*AI. You're ally will often get stuck, keep dying, or expect you to hold their hand.
*Custom character creation. Terribly limited in a number of ways. Only a few hairstyles, only a couple types of weapons, must have a cape, no extra abilities, can't have a female voice.

Here's a list of cons for the technical side:
*Crashes. Only had a handful of these, but it still set back progress.
*Graphic errors. This only appeared in a certain puzzle room in Cirith Ungol, but caused me to believe my graphics card was dying.

If you like Lego, buy this.
If you like Lord of the Rings, buy this.

If you don't like Lego or Lord of the Rings, you are possibly a robot. Or maybe Sauron. Buy it anyway.

Play this with someone who doesn't do much gaming, and if you both enjoy the license, you will have a blast. You can't die, and it's never hard. Just cute and endearing.

I am neither a big LEGO fan nor a big LOTR fan (I mean, I have seen the movies, but that is the extent of my interest in LOTR).

But this game is super beautiful, the game mechanics are easy to grasp, and puzzles while somewhat challenging at times, never held me up for more than a minute or two. The devs has done well to find a way to nearly-constantly trigger my brain's pleasure center (with rewards, sounds, and visuals) that I don't tire of playing it.

I can safely recommend this title to gamers of all ages and skill-levels. :)

Buy with impunity!

This to me was a departure from the slightly old feeling formula of the past games and an attempt to do some new things. I think this game is definitely a fun game even if there are annoyances to be found.

The game uses audio from the movies, which is good and bad for me. The audio is well done and as always it is nice to hear those familiar voices, but it does kill the humor and creativity of a lot of the cutscenes. I wish they had went back to no audio for the voices.

The character wheel in game is useful but can definitely be cumbersome as it becomes an extra step in getting to the full roster, which when you have a lot of characters of when free roaming is very important.

The questing is crap to me. Making me go back again to other levels and get items is not fun, it is boring. This is a feature I think was fixed well in more recent Lego outings.

The mythril equipment was very good and I think brought creativity to the game, especially with the musical shoes and the Disco Phial.

Combat was so so, I actully thought fighting would be improved for a game like this but it was the same.

Level design was done well and I think encapsulated those scenes very well. If not for the many game breaking glitches and the ability to somehow get 1 or 2 extra minikits or items over the limit effectively keeping you from reaching 100%.

Overall I would recommend this game with a 7.5 / 10. The newer games have improved this formula but this one is left in that time between old and new.
