Based on The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy, LEGO® The Lord of the Rings follows the original story-lines of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, taking players through the epic story events re-imagined with the humor and endless variety of LEGO play.

Trusted with the dangerous task to destroy an ancient magical ring that threatens all that is good, Frodo is forced to leave his peaceful home. But the ring wants to be found and the road to Mount Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed, will be perilous and riddled with Orcs and fouler things. To help Frodo, a Fellowship is formed —Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a Man of Gondor, and Frodo’s Hobbit friends Sam, Merry and Pippin. Players relive the legend through the LEGO mini-figures, as they explore wonders, solve timeless riddles, and overcome endless foes in their quest to destroy the Ring.

"LEGO The Lord of the Rings" is a game with a somewhat Open-World and is the game about Lotr, the world-wide famous book and movies. If you like LotR, this is definitely a game for you. It may not be very fun for you if you have not seen the movies or read the book, so I will recommend you to do that before playing this game.
It is very funny and a bit challenging as some of the puzzles and "quests" needs fast reacting and it is not always that the camera is on your side :3 However, it is funny how the LEGO game about LotR is the best LotR. Buy this if you like LEGO games and want hours of fun (and if you have watched the movies, it is smart to do that before playing)!

The lego games are great. However, they're designed with a controller in mind not a keyboard. Therefore if you dont have a controller dont get this game. I assume it is a great game as i played the lego games before on my tablet, but on pc you really need a controller.

I think there are many iterations of LOTR games out there. Some based on single movies. Some include them all. Many I've seen poorly adapt scenes from the movie into gameplay that doesn't always fit. Or they'll force levels and gameplay that doesn't really go with the movies at all.

The Lego LOTR game is great in that it encompasses all three films with stunning attention to detail. Just about every major sequence from the films is included in this game in one form or another, either as a cutscene, or as a cleverly incorporated aspect of gameplay. You name it. It's probably in there. Remember when the hobbits meet Aragorn for the first time and escape to Weathertop? Remember "second breakfast"? Well, there's a sequence of gameplay where you actually make second breakfast (which subsequently causes the ring wraiths to spot you). It can be that granular. It's amazing. Ultimately, if you're looking for a game that gives the most fulfilling gaming experience of actually playing through all three films in a single package (and you don't mind Lego looks and humor), then this game is for you. There are tons of characters and "treasures" to unlock. And what's great is being able to traverse an open-world Middle Earth (albeit it's a bit minaturized in scale).

My only negatives are the sometimes repetitive nature of gameplay. If you've played any other modern Lego game you'll know what I'm talking about. Also, horses. There are some moments you ride horses in between levels as a part of the story, but you can't spawn a horse on command which would be GREAT for free roam. Granted, there are quite a few quick-travel locations, but there's nothing really outside of a less-than-adequate nonessential item which helps you get around quicker.
Also, the buggyness. I don't know how common it is, but there were a few points where the game graphically glitched out that caused me to have to close out completely....which was hard because the menu became invisible at this point. Also, there was a level in which you control Frodo and Sam and have to collect Orc armor to disguise yourselves to escape. Usually, you can get a character to drop a disposable object from your inventory so that the other can pick it up. Well, in this particular situation, if you grab more of the armor pieces than the character needs, you will need to restart because the game won't let you drop it for the other character to pick it up.
There's also quite a few other sporadic blips and glitches that were kind of annoying but would take too long to mention them in a review, however, when the game was running smoothly, it was a blast.

This game is so hilarious.

While staying close to the story, it has all the funny twists and really nice humor in it.

Really enjoy this game and I know you will all love it, especially with the current Steam sale I would definately pick it up if you didn't already!

I should have read reviews before pulling the trigger on this game. It has 0 mouse support, not even the menu screen. This is my first lego game and the intro and animation looked really fun and exciting but i just couldnt get my bearings using only the keyboard, from what i read all the lego games are like this. I couldnt even make it through 10 minutes of the game before i had to turn it off.

Game is badly broken. Sauron is actually doing nothing in the prologue. Reloaded and replayed the first 10min a dozen times in various graphics settings, with different graphics drivers dating back to Jan 2015 etc.. It is not working! Just standing in the circle and nothing's happening. Maybe there's a fix somewhere out there. Googling it delivered nada.

Don't let my playtime fool you, i have already clocked in over a thousand hours on the wii version.
That being said, here we go:

THE PROS
+ Open world (a MASSIVE hub)
+ Stay's mostly true to source material
+ Keeps that TT sense of humor
+ Voices are not entirely ruined by imperfect mixing
+ One gets immersed in the beautiful and perfect soundtrack by Howard Shore
+ THE MITHRIL RUNNING SHOE SONG

THE CONS
- this is the one where TT first decided to abandon the classic lego mumbling and switch to imperfectly mixed sound bites from the source material.
- as with all tt games, it gets a tiny bit repetitive
- $19.99 is still a bit much for a game this age, but its worth it

TL;DR: Buy it.

This is the first Lego game i got to play, there are so many of those and they keep coming out almost every year so i decided to have a shot and see what those games are all about.
After finishing the story i must say that this game is a good buy for any Tolkien fans.
The atmosphere, the sounds, the silly lego moments and how not the local co-op for having double the fun with family and friends.
I did experience few moments of minor frustration because of the chunky controls for a PC keyboard and a few minor bugs, but in the end those things are just a minor disturbance from a well made game!

If you like Lego, buy this.
If you like Lord of the Rings, buy this.

If you don't like Lego or Lord of the Rings, you are possibly a robot. Or maybe Sauron. Buy it anyway.

Play this with someone who doesn't do much gaming, and if you both enjoy the license, you will have a blast. You can't die, and it's never hard. Just cute and endearing.

I am neither a big LEGO fan nor a big LOTR fan (I mean, I have seen the movies, but that is the extent of my interest in LOTR).

But this game is super beautiful, the game mechanics are easy to grasp, and puzzles while somewhat challenging at times, never held me up for more than a minute or two. The devs has done well to find a way to nearly-constantly trigger my brain's pleasure center (with rewards, sounds, and visuals) that I don't tire of playing it.

I can safely recommend this title to gamers of all ages and skill-levels. :)

Buy with impunity!

This to me was a departure from the slightly old feeling formula of the past games and an attempt to do some new things. I think this game is definitely a fun game even if there are annoyances to be found.

The game uses audio from the movies, which is good and bad for me. The audio is well done and as always it is nice to hear those familiar voices, but it does kill the humor and creativity of a lot of the cutscenes. I wish they had went back to no audio for the voices.

The character wheel in game is useful but can definitely be cumbersome as it becomes an extra step in getting to the full roster, which when you have a lot of characters of when free roaming is very important.

The questing is crap to me. Making me go back again to other levels and get items is not fun, it is boring. This is a feature I think was fixed well in more recent Lego outings.

The mythril equipment was very good and I think brought creativity to the game, especially with the musical shoes and the Disco Phial.

Combat was so so, I actully thought fighting would be improved for a game like this but it was the same.

Level design was done well and I think encapsulated those scenes very well. If not for the many game breaking glitches and the ability to somehow get 1 or 2 extra minikits or items over the limit effectively keeping you from reaching 100%.

Overall I would recommend this game with a 7.5 / 10. The newer games have improved this formula but this one is left in that time between old and new.
