As much as I enjoyed this game, not only due to the Lord of the Rings Asthetic, but also because I quite like the LEGO games, this game had me more frustrated than anything. I enjoyed the initial playthrough, but several elements of the game, all after the Story mode, were highly irritating.

I can recall 2 particular points during my attempts to collect the Mithril Bricks on the overworld, where the "Parcour" was completely glitched and faulty, leading me to several moments of raging. And I almost never rage during games.

Because of this, amngst a few other smaller issues, I cannot give this game more than 7/10. Its a very good LEGO game, but lack of smaller bug fixes, which have been continously commented on by the community, means that it would be unfair to give this game a higher grade.

TL;DR

7/10

Good Game, some annoying bugs that make 100% a real ♥♥♥♥♥

As a Big Fan of LOTR I have wanted this game for a while but put it off till recently. I got it during a sale and only payed about $5 for it and was glad i did, heck even paying full price is wqorth it.

So why did i wait so long?

Well the main reason was that I had played (at least tried to play) a previous lego title (The Star wars complete saga) but found it really tricky. Namely because the game is kinda clucnky with keyboard and mouse and is much better suited to a controller.

So i finally have a controller and decided to get this game and i love it. The story is well done, there are some nice comedy touches added and the gameplay is pretty smooth. It also moves the story along at a nice pace it doesnt seem too laboured while still hitting all the main points of the films and books.

I really enjoy how you can go back to previous places to get some of the extras that you missed or couldnt get because you didnt have certain members or didnt have an item you needed.

The gameplay is well worked with the fact that many levels you need to use many of the members of your party to get through it.

As of right now i am only on The Two Towers, looking forward to see what they do with helms deep. the battle for gondor and then the modor battle at the end.

I will probably pick up more of the lego games now and as i said before and as was mentioned by another reviewer if you just want the story to run through then playing with keyboard and mouse will allow this without too much problem but if you want the Full Monty and the best experience then play it with a controller.

Your standard TT lego game formulae adapted for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, somehow remains fresh and exciting. The levels are all well crafted and offer plenty of replay value, and the minikits are not to easy to find. The characters look great in lego form, and the open world of Middle Earth has plenty of side quests to complete after the main story. Call me old school but it still doesn't seem right the minifigures talking, and not just doing some signing and slapstick. Overall a great game, but doesn't offer that much different to most other lego games.

If you like Lord of the Rings and like Lego poking fun at it, definitely play it for the story. To get it 100%, there are a lot of issues though. Some bugs regarding the achievements and very very (very very very) frustrating controls make it hard to gather all the collectibles.

Jumping and controlling the camera is really awkward, which can be frustrating at times, but when playing the story it is not as prevalent. So if you just want to play it for the story, go for it. If you want to finish it 100%, prepare for some frustration.

If you like Lego, buy this.
If you like Lord of the Rings, buy this.

If you don't like Lego or Lord of the Rings, you are possibly a robot. Or maybe Sauron. Buy it anyway.

Play this with someone who doesn't do much gaming, and if you both enjoy the license, you will have a blast. You can't die, and it's never hard. Just cute and endearing.

I am neither a big LEGO fan nor a big LOTR fan (I mean, I have seen the movies, but that is the extent of my interest in LOTR).

But this game is super beautiful, the game mechanics are easy to grasp, and puzzles while somewhat challenging at times, never held me up for more than a minute or two. The devs has done well to find a way to nearly-constantly trigger my brain's pleasure center (with rewards, sounds, and visuals) that I don't tire of playing it.

I can safely recommend this title to gamers of all ages and skill-levels. :)

Buy with impunity!

This to me was a departure from the slightly old feeling formula of the past games and an attempt to do some new things. I think this game is definitely a fun game even if there are annoyances to be found.

The game uses audio from the movies, which is good and bad for me. The audio is well done and as always it is nice to hear those familiar voices, but it does kill the humor and creativity of a lot of the cutscenes. I wish they had went back to no audio for the voices.

The character wheel in game is useful but can definitely be cumbersome as it becomes an extra step in getting to the full roster, which when you have a lot of characters of when free roaming is very important.

The questing is crap to me. Making me go back again to other levels and get items is not fun, it is boring. This is a feature I think was fixed well in more recent Lego outings.

The mythril equipment was very good and I think brought creativity to the game, especially with the musical shoes and the Disco Phial.

Combat was so so, I actully thought fighting would be improved for a game like this but it was the same.

Level design was done well and I think encapsulated those scenes very well. If not for the many game breaking glitches and the ability to somehow get 1 or 2 extra minikits or items over the limit effectively keeping you from reaching 100%.

Overall I would recommend this game with a 7.5 / 10. The newer games have improved this formula but this one is left in that time between old and new.
