About This Game

Daedalic Entertainment, once called “Lucasarts from Germany“ by the GameStar magazine, invites the players into a fantastic comedy adventure that revolves around a crazy love story of Rufus and Goal.

In Deponia, the world has degenerated into a vast garbage dump, in which the crotchety Rufus ekes out his sorry existence. He is part of the lowest social class, doomed to live his life in literal mountains of trash. He hopes for an opportunity to get into the world of the rich, who live in a floating city high above the clouds. Fate seems to smile on the snotty good-for-nothing when one day the attractive lady named Goal from the higher sector plummets into one of the trash heaps. Rufus decides to help the young woman out by taking her back to her husband. When he notices that Goal's husband is a dead ringer for himself, he hatches a diabolical scheme to gain access to the upper world. However, things don't work out quite as planned, since he has feelings for the beauty which limits his usual unscrupulousness.

Help Rufus, the poor boy from the junkyard, to win over the girl from heaven. Only with this rich girl from his dreams he might be able to escape Deponia and, unexpectedly, to save the planet.

This game is my favorite Point and Click adventure ever. In fact, it*s one of my favorite games ever. Rufus is a lovable, but clumsy and egotistical Idiot and all Characters in this game are funny and rememberable. The Story is really damn enjoyable, the World makes for great puzzling ans is interesting and the Riddles are a very good match between weird, hard, funny and doable. And the Soundtrack. Every time i hear it i want to play it again. Wonderful Game by Daedalic.

Do I really need to write a review for this game? Probably not. But I enjoyed this and the following games in the series so much, I just feel I have to add my voice to all the other voices of praise for Deponia. This game really sparked my excitement for gaming again. I don't know how to write an organized review, so I'll just ramble off some points. :) The thing that makes this game gold is the writing. All of the characters are well developed and charming. Even the hilariously self-absorbed Rufus. I feel like this is one of the more unique games I have played. If you want to figure out all of the puzzles on your own without a guide, you will spend hours at some points, wracking your brain, thinking creatively... The solutions you (Rufus) come up with to advance are not immediately obvious and are very clever. It can get frustrating, but it is very rewarding when you put things together. Such a smart and comedic game. The atmosphere is so unique and the artwork is fantastic. The experience only gets better in the next games as the story developes, so be prepared to spend some time in this universe. I'm so glad I did!

"Hello there sugarpuff!"

Really fun point and click game. Puzzles were varied, interesting and at timess challenging.

Main character reminds you of that one friend we all have who is so full of him/herself we can't help but to laugh at his/her antics. Dialogue is very creative and funny (hilarious at times) with good voice acting that portrays the characters with authenticity. Also the song that plays between chapters is catchy and interestingly voiced.

Even even you haven't played a point and click game before, I recommend anyone give this game a shot.

Quick disclaimer: I haven't finished the game. I'm eight hours in and just out of Kuvaq, playing without walkthroughs. So far? I have to say, this is one of my all-time favorites of the point-and-click genre.

...
No, really. I mean it. Deponia is an interesting game because it combines LucasArts style gameplay with puzzles that [almost] make sense, as well as a diverse cast of characters in which the one you play as is the LEAST interesting/likeable.

In many ways, Rufus is an embodiment of why every LucasArts protagonist is a complete asshat-- they're overconfident to the point of arrogance, will steal literally ANYTHING to form some nonsensical solution, and at the end of the day, they do a whole lot of damage to the world around him. Rufus is at this point attempting to leave the rock with everyone in the town absolutely hating him-- he's caused all sorts of disasters in his plots to escape the world.

That's another strong point of the game-- its world is genuinely interesting. Similar to the movies Elysium or WALL-E (though unlike those films, it doesn't mind going over the top in its cartoonish approach), Deponia is a trash-coated apocalyptic planet where there's very little clean water and citizens make do on what they can find. The rich of the past now live on Elysium, a self-sustaining nation in the sky that just dumps their random crap on the planet below. Rufus's schemes in this game are almost entirely for the sake of boarding a ship to this place, but soon becomes wrapped up in a plot he had no prior knowledge nor involvement in.

The game's biggest strength, in my eyes, is the puzzles. Unlike other games, I just haven't felt the need to use a walkthrough. Anyone who's played a point-and-click before is aware of the infamous "Sierra logic" that plagues them, where the puzzle makes no sense whatsoever-- turn on the sink and clog it with toilet paper to distract the flight attendant, then put an egg in the microwave and take the flight cushion, oxygen device, lighter, and cushion while nobody's looking. Lower an anchor, move to the right, pull the other anchor to tangle them, and use your scythe to hang them on the boat to tear it in half. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN. The puzzles in this game will follow your fetch quests with a set list of ingredients, you can hold Space to put icons on all doorways and interactibles, and dialogue hints towards your main goals.

I haven't quite completed it, or even gotten far, but I'm already having a great time playing it and felt like dropping an incomplete analysis. If my opinino changes or the ending is particularly crappy, I'll probably change this, but until then understand that Deponia really is one of the best point-and-clicks you can find, if you're willing to overlook some minor annoyances such as the 'meh' audio quality and a few frustrating moments.

I forgot how I got this game but it was a special suprise. I went in knowing nothing about the game but it left me
with a pleasant joy when I played the game, sure the character was very dimwitted, egotistical, greedy, and needy, But!
In the end it felt warm and hearty this game. I would definitely play this game again in the future and going to go play the
sequel shortly after this :P

Note: Some puzzles need to think extremely outside the box, like, outside the planet.

Daedalic is a well-respected name in the P&C (Point & Click) adventure game genre, so I hardly need to introduce them, so I'll just share my experiences with the game.

Pros:
+ Soundtrack and voice acting are a quality experience
+ This of course would be meaningless without quality writing and humor
+ You can double click some places you need to go in order to skip the transitions. Useful when you need to backtrack.
+ The game won't automatically unlock "achievements" on you completing checkpoints, you actually have to find some of them

Cons:
- Some logic leaps in gameplay. (spoiler) Like how am I supposed to know the funnel is the blowpipe when Deponia is a crapsack world with bits of tubing and pipes everywhere? (/spoiler) This will lead to... Trying everything with everything...
- Sometimes going to an out-of-the-way location to pick up something you need to use somewhere else, at the other end

Final Verdict: 90/100
No game is perfect, but Deponia certainly is not a waste of money.

Daedalic is no LucasArts, not being backed by some insanely popular moneymaking franchises that rhyme with Mar Bars or Diana Clones. But the LucasArts we knew isn’t coming back, so I suspect it’s a good try it if you’ve got a hankering for that style of gameplay (with a similar amount of difficulty).

In contrast to its clear inspirations found in series such as Monkey Island, it suffers from production iffiness issues such as variable voice acting and animation quality (in the English version, there are some nasty translation-isms throughout, and multiple lines of that sort where they clearly stressed a word in a sentence that wasn’t the one that should have been stressed), as well as an indecisiveness as to what constitutes an appropriate style of fourth-wall breaking.

Much to the game’s credit, however, the setting is a unique junkyard world and the protagonist Rufus (at least at the start) is more the sort of guy you might expect a point-and-click adventure game kleptomaniac vandal to be: a near-irredeemable jerk. Unfortunately, people are all too willing to point this out to his face, which sometimes works in the story’s favor and sometimes doesn’t. Moreover, there are a lot of artistic details in the world that you simply can’t click on and have Rufus snark about, which is something of a must to get a real feel for an adventure game world’s presence.

One thing that is much nicer than typical old-school examples is that you don’t have to do the pixel-hunting if you don’t want to (hold space to see the interactive spots), and most of the time, you don’t have to watch a slow walk animation just to explore the map (double-click to fast forward through navigational arrows).

Finally, the game is kind of crashy in a few spots (at least the Mac version is), so you may want to do some saving on top of the auto-saving. Some achievements are skippable, but at least one achievement guide in the Steam community is relatively spoiler free.

For all its flaws, the game is usually about as funny as it thinks it is, so at least I can say I enjoyed it. Nonetheless, this game has some mature humor, so don’t get too fooled by the cutesy noseless art; it’s not really for kids.

Droggeljug.

REVIEW
Deponia is a highly entertaining point-and-click misadventure with lovable characters, an interesting world, and wacky humor. If you like adventure games and goofy narratives, then look no further. It should be a pretty easy game to enjoy for most fans of the genre.

The crazy characters and zany game-world combined with the pleasing art style and soundscape make Deponia charming and atmospheric. This alluring ambiance is definitely the backbone of the game. And as everything else falls into place, the overall presentation of the game just exudes an aura of “enjoyability” that is hard to defy.

Interestingly, the music and sound effects really play a much larger than usual role in the establishment of the ambiance. Relatedly, even the voice-acting in this game is not only well above the standard for the genre, but also objectively well performed. The end result shows how these elements can really help elevate the overall presentation of a game when they’re handled with care.

As far as gameplay goes: it is pretty standard for the genre. The puzzles are decently challenging and mostly fair; although some of the solutions don’t really make sense in terms of real-world thinking. You must remember to think in terms of the wacky logic of the game-world when solving puzzles. Sometimes it can be a little frustrating because it is hard to think like that. I suppose that if you get truly flabbergasted, you could always check a guide. Regardless of how you make it past the confusing parts, the rest of the presentation of the game is well worth experiencing.

So if you are a fan of point-and-click games, Deponia should be a good bet for you. You definitely should beware of the outside-the-box (inside-the-game) logic, but in my opinion, it is one of the features of the game that makes it unique and worth playing.

A point-to-click adventure game in 2D environment with comic style characters that utilizes ridiculously humourous dialogues; which is why its so fun to play!!

Its all about a bold, stubborn and egocentric boy called Rufus who listens to no one but his own thoughts. The only thing he wants is to leave Deponia- planet of junkyard and to go to Elysium which is a floating city above the planet that holds all the beauty and wealth.
Everyone, including his close friends tell him he is a maniac and can never succeed in his stupid plans of leaving deponia. But as the attractive lady called Goal from higher sector falls into the trash heaps of deponia and she needs to go back; Rufus assumes that helping her and taking her back to her fiancé would be his only salvation.

Some characters are weird, some are cranky and grumpy but all are really full of amusement. Most of the ideas that Rufus gets to escape from junkyard is by talking to different kind of people that show less politeness and more of a sarcasm. Most of the dialogues are often packed with lot of humor which will make you laugh out loud. The voice acting is top notch which is why i found the game really amusing and didn't stop playing.

The puzzles in the game were quite difficult(especially for me). Rufus has to collect weird stuff in his inventory; combining some of them together to make them work and to proceed his mission of leaving deponia. Finding the right tools and items was a difficult task.

Backgrounds are colourful that even the whole junk and heaps of trashs seems to hold beauty in them.

In the end i want to say i loved this game a lot. It has unusual love story. I recommend this game, even to those who are not fan of such games. But you should try something different, as different is sometimes cool!
