About This Game

Daedalic Entertainment, once called “Lucasarts from Germany“ by the GameStar magazine, invites the players into a fantastic comedy adventure that revolves around a crazy love story of Rufus and Goal.

In Deponia, the world has degenerated into a vast garbage dump, in which the crotchety Rufus ekes out his sorry existence. He is part of the lowest social class, doomed to live his life in literal mountains of trash. He hopes for an opportunity to get into the world of the rich, who live in a floating city high above the clouds. Fate seems to smile on the snotty good-for-nothing when one day the attractive lady named Goal from the higher sector plummets into one of the trash heaps. Rufus decides to help the young woman out by taking her back to her husband. When he notices that Goal's husband is a dead ringer for himself, he hatches a diabolical scheme to gain access to the upper world. However, things don't work out quite as planned, since he has feelings for the beauty which limits his usual unscrupulousness.

Help Rufus, the poor boy from the junkyard, to win over the girl from heaven. Only with this rich girl from his dreams he might be able to escape Deponia and, unexpectedly, to save the planet.

Key Features:

  • Unique comic style with hand-drawn HD resolution 2D graphics

  • Bizarre characters and wacky humor

  • Challenging puzzles and hours of dialogue

  • Unique universe in the tradition of Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Terry Pratchett (Discworld) and Matt Groening (The Simpsons, Futurama)

9/10 - One of the Best Point and Click Adventure Series!

I waited so long to play this game and I regret that! It's one of the best point and click adventures I've played in a while; so good that I'm sure I will complete the remaining 3 games in the series. The story is fun and entertaining and the puzzles, objectives, voiced actors and graphics really put this game at the top.

The story takes place on the world of Deponia; a futuristic world that has turned into a floating garbage dump. You are tasked with helping Rufus get the girl, save the world and get off that dump Deponia! Never EVER pay $20 for this game! If I didn't know any better I would have said it's worth the price... because it is. However, this game is on sale for 90% off literally 8 months out of the year. You can grab the whole bundle for about $4!

Worth $2-3; Great game but bundle is on sale for 90% all the time!

It's a kind of OK game. Hella pretty. Kind of jenky at some spots but overall great graphic quality. Voice overs are just fine and the songs are OK too.

The protagonist is an unlikeable c***. But really that's the only real critic I have about it.

This is a weird game because I didn't really like it at all until the very end. I enjoyed the ending a lot, and I liked the characters that were only there for the ending. That said, the rest of it wasn't that great so I can't recommend it just to get to the good part (at the very end).
The puzzles are decent enough but Rufus is an idiot beyond measure and if he weren't the main and in some parts only character around (keep in mind he comments on EVERYTHING you do, look at, attempt, etc) it wouldn't have been as awful working through the puzzles or doing dialogue.
The aesthetic is cool, but if you really want to play this, get it on sale. There are better point-and-click adventures out there.

Disclosure. I bought this game as part of a Daedalic bundle, and at a 90% discount. This game was definitely an impulse purchase as point and click games are not normally the type of games that I play.

Having said that, I would give this game a thumbs up, but only just barely. It does have some fun, interesting, and complex puzzles. Unfortunately, it also has a few nonsensical puzzles too -- and I almost rage quit the game a few times.

my status on the game: Completed the Deponia series.

the only thing i hate is the obvious ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ main character. they could not make him more childish i guess, so they stopped at the bottom of human norms...
other then that the game is good if you love to puzzle and find stuff out.

First off, this game taught me that I suck at it, or I heavily lost practice at point and click puzzle games. I played it with a walkthrough open in the background for whenever I got stuck because, for example, I wouldn't have figured out that I needed a damn parrot (you'll know now), or to combine certain stuff for stuff that looked like regular background or foreground. Did that ruin the experience for me? No. It was still very enjoyable.

The dialogue is funny and you can get some good laughs from certain parts.

The story is good enough and the main character is alright even though he's quite the egomaniac, though I only got mad at him at the end when he mistook a guy for a pirate, poor dude.

Gameplay is fine as well, specially if you know how these games work and that they have some weird combinations and usage for items.

Only problems I've seen were some minor sound bugs. In the town hall for example, the protagonist shows the speech animation while a line from another character is said, and he does this not in a mocking way. Sometimes something is said that's a bit different in the written form, and when you skip through dialogue it can happen that it gets a bit mixed up when spoken. Doesn't happen very often though, so it's fine.

Only warning I can give is, pay very close attention to everything that moves or changes, and what people say, there are so many hints that I thought was just regular dialogue, but actually mattered.

Conclusion : It's a good game.

Overall, this was a nice break from some of the faster paced games I play. Puzzles weren't to hard as long as you listen to the dialogue. The story was silly and over the top making it a very likable game.

The puzzles are often non-sensical and you'll find yourself trying ridiculous combinations and actions to *hopefully* make some sort of progress. I appreciate adventure games where the puzzles are difficult but logical. Though the characters and artwork are enjoyable, Deponia does not satisfy one's puzzle solving skills and one may find him/herself referencing a guide/walkthrough far too often.

Today I finished this game. Fresh from the ending I am going to say: great game. Clever puzzles, funny dialogs, mischievous protagonist and great art desing - all this comes together in this game.
It has few weak sides: voiceacting in some places is not that good, I encountered few graphical bugs in my playthrough. If you can bypass those problems like I did and you love quest-type games - buy and play it!
I am now considering bying next two games just to see how story turns out.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!
This has to be the funniest point and click I have played in ages. Not only is it hillarious from start to finish. It is also incredibly challenging. You really have to think outside the box for some of these, but at the same time it makes sense, just like in Sam and Max. So you will find yourself explaining your reasoning for solving a puzzle to someone who doesn't play this, to only get a facial expression thrown back at you that says "What on earth are you on??" Lol. The mechanics are very old school, which is great, and definately hark back to the early DOS days. Being able to bring the items menu up and down via the mouse wheel is pure genius, and gives me a great sense of pleasure every time I do it.The visuals are gorgeous. Every landscape and character you see is very sharp and clean, with loads of colour and detail. The script, storyline, characters, songs, music and voice acting is phenomenal! The humour is very adult so I'd steer younger kids away from this (It's not Deadpool or anything but there's the odd bit of language and double entendre and it can get a little dark in places). This game had me hooked from start to finish. Even though I had to break away from and come back to it occasionally when I got stuck. Getting stuck was definately the most frustrating thing about this game, because you'd get a real head scratcher, not be able to solve it for a while, but really want to know what happens in the story. Still I don't think I would change anything about this game. Amazing. Would definately recommend it and am looking forward to playing the next installment 'Chaos on Deponia'.

Ah Deponia. It's one game every adventure game enthusiast should have in his or her library. It's goofy, quirky, and annoyingly clever with its puzzles, gameplay, and plot. Your main hero, Rufus, is a character you love to hate with his dimwitted yet sometimes strangely ingenious ideas as well as his egotistical personality. Storywise, this game gives an excellent job creating the setting and world of Deponia. It has memorable characters with excellent voice acting. Not to mention the gameplay is quite fun and makes you scratch your head a few times, questioning your sanity. (Postal cats, really?)

Anyway, it's a great game part of a now FOUR game series. So I'd better get started and... DROGGELJUG.

A funny point and click game but very challenging.
- first of all the plot, you play as a guy names rufus and his main goal in life is to escape a planet full of junk to a heaven-like place called Elysium for a better life but faith has other plans for him (the plot gets more interesting as you progress in the game).
-the gameplay is smooth and as any ponit and click games you have to solve puzzles to progress but in this game i find it very hard in the begining cause you dont have hints or anything to point you in the right direction, the combination and the solutions to the puzzles are very wacked and a bit crazy , kinda remind me of the RUNAWAY series ( chek guides for more helps)
-the graphics are 2D/3D comics drawing art style (funny and enjoyable)
-the voice acting is perfect , various dialogues and interaction between characters , music is enjoyable but gets repetitive sometimes
-sadly the game has various bugs and some of them kills the progresion of the game but hopefully teh devs made it possible to download savegames from the site ( savegame for each lvl of the game ) better then nothing i guess.
-all achivments are easy except for the last one , you need a special savegame from the site to unloak it r just use SAM and the price is a bit too much but you always can get it on sale ( get the full journey cause you gonna love the game )
finally i recomend it for point and click fans specially RUNAWAY series
7/10

As really good point-and-click games go, Deponia series more than excels. Fans of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango? Look no further! Highly recommended!

The only two "bad" things about the three games are one slightly laborious puzzle, and one song... You'll know what I mean when you hear it. That song *will* crawl around your ears for the rest of your puny, miserable, addled life. And, be warned, TESO will not sound the same after hearing it. ;)

Brought to you by Daedalic Entertainment, Deponia is the first installment of a point and click trilogy. Amidst the top reviews on Steam right now, I will start this review out by saying that this game is NOT for those who do not enjoy stupid humor along the lines of Futurama, and/or those who cannot appreciate a challenging point and click title; or for those who do not understand that guides exist, for those of us who still enjoy point and clicks... but ultimately suck at them (yep, that last one is me!).

To this day, I have never been let down by Daedalic, and fortunately Deponia is no exception to the rule. The game is an outstanding throwback to old cartoon point and clicks from the late 90's and early 00's, with its intentional frame skipping animations, bright and colorful scenery, and vibrantly detailed character personalities. The whole thing screams "childhood" for those of us who grew up in the era of Windows 95 and 98, and perhaps that nostalgia is what we really cling to with this title. However, that isn't to say that the entire experience isn't enjoyable; Deponia is simply the first entry of a trilogy, and while the story isn't exactly riveting, it does a good job of setting up for the remaining two entries.

Players will take on the role of Rufus, a lovable idiot who really does have the best of intentions, but fails constantly to properly execute any plans that he may have. He honestly reminds me of Fry from Futurama, with his quirky dumbness and heart of gold that is led astray by him succumbing to whatever he desires; for instance, a lollipop over the better grade brain implant needed for his girlfriend. Rufus lives on the planet of Deponia, in the town of Kovaq, which is nothing but a junk heap from horizon to horizon. Rufus desperately wishes to escape the landfill, to the planet above Deponia called Elysium, and the game starts off with him on his first attempt to get there. Along the way, gamers are introduced to a hefty range of entities, including an Elysium woman named Goal; whom Rufus of course sees as his way to escape Deponia. Most of the other personalities within the game have just as much depth as Rufus and Goal, although some of them fall to the wayside as well.

Aesthetically, Deponia is an incredibly stunning game; from the many vibrantly colored scenes, to the well animated cutscenes. Every scene that the player will visit has a radically different appearance, and it's easy to get sucked into the junkyard that surrounds you. Not only are the visuals pleasing, but the soundtrack is one that you will not grow tired of quickly. Speaking of the soundtrack, between chapters there is a hobo who sings amusing songs; it really is one of the highlights to the game, so much so that it carried on throughout the franchise. It really is the absurd, stupid humor of the Deponia franchise that has caused it to become so popular over the years, and the singing hobo is just one great example of it.

The actual gameplay of Deponia is tough, and it has caused many people to give up on finishing the game. It's really one of those "take a wild guess" at what to do next point and clicks, but luckily in this advanced age of the internet and technology, many guides are available to assist when you inevitably get stuck. For those who don't believe in guides, you will have many hours of figuring out some complex conundrums ahead of you. For those of us who take the easy way out, you will pretty well solve everything in around 6-7 hours. For an extra added difficulty, once you complete the game once, you are able to playthrough again under the Druggeljug setting if you so wish; where every single word in the game is replaced with Druggeljug... this includes items, scenes, cutscenes, dialogue, and dialogue options.

Even though Deponia has a somewhat lackluster ending, it's important to remember that this entry is the first within the trilogy, and it is simply here to set up the remainder of the story. Despite its complexity, it's an incredibly immersive and wonderfully executed point and click title in both story and gameplay. The characters are memorable, the setting is unique, the humor is scattered in all the right spots, and Daedalic will have you hungering for more by the end of the game. Like I said at the beginning of the review, if stupid humor and complex problem solving are not your things, you're better off finding a different franchise to invest in. For the rest of us, there is the Deponia series, and it's one that I highly recommend.

Rating: 4.5/5.0 - Excellent, highly worth playing.

Deponia is, at its heart, a love story--a tale of boy meets girl. The boy, Rufus, is a dreamer, the archetypal down-on-his-luck underdog who aims high but fails oh so miserably time and again. The girl, Goal, is classically unobtainable--rich, pampered, spoiled, and blissfully unaware of her own attractiveness to the opposite sex. Oh, and she has a removable chip in her head, lives in a floating palace in the sky, and has the power to blow up the entire planet. No, this isn't the most conventional of love stories, but such wackiness is befitting for a game that is as much about providing oodles of comic relief as it is about telling the tale of two lost souls.

There exists in el mundo much hating on the this game and the series as a whole, and I can see where they're coming from, but at least give it a chance. If you like to indulge in a variety of both adolescent and mature comedy, have fun playing point and click games, or enjoy scratching your head, at least try the game out. If an experienced (or at least moderately so,) point and click player, a substantial taste of the game is certainly achievable within steam refund playtime limit.

RPSs review of the series past this game are not to be believed (as well as the lukewarm reception of this game) they harbor deep prejudice/not giving fair chance/failing to grasp game components correctly and John Walker should go walk off a cliff.

I'm not going to give insight on the game 'cause its content is simply ineffable and must be experienced through your own gameplay.

Okay, I just finished playing this game for the third time. Reason being that Deponia Doomsday just came out and I want to refresh myself on the story.. Now.. Every single time even though I've Memorized the solutions to every single puzzle I still enjoy this game... It has a lot of funny moments, and also has a much deeper meaning.

Honestly I rate this game 10/10 Pretty good rating I know, but this is one of those games that inspired me to create my own due to its amazing storyline.

This is a fun adventure. You play Rufus who just want to get to Elysium and off Deponia, a planet full of dump and waste. The planet is thought to be uninhabited and ought to be destroyed by the Organon. But as it happens one of your tries to escape the planet had actually succeed in landing on an Organon cruiser. You and accidentally also the girl Goal from Elysium are dropped again on the planet’s surface. Your task is to a) save Goal, b) get Goal to Elysium to report that there is still life on Doponia and c) get yourself off the planet.

This can’t be hard, could it? Well it is. Since Rufus, your character, is a blighter, boaster, a loafer, which always exaggerated the opinion of himself. He can’t do nothing good and his tries to get off the planet as well as his inventions usually end up in total catastrophes. This is stuff for a lot of funny conversations and hilarious dialogues. The (german) voice acting is brilliant.

The planet, its people and also Rufus do entertain and are not without sympathy. The riddles are sometimes quite hard to solve and I did some by pure trial & error (which is no good).

Controlling the game is clever made, the scenarios are nice drawn and there is no room for a technical reproach.

8/10.
