Sonic Adventure 2 was a title most Dreamcast owners were curious over about how different it would handle things over it's predecessor, and back in it's day it was met with mixed reactions. (Very much like the first Sonic Adventure) Usually most people praise the gameplay sections of Sonic and Shadow for the more straightforward platforming action gameplay, but berate the clunky platform and shooting-segments from Tails/Dr. Eggman's stages, and the incredibly large and oftentimes tedious stage design of Knuckles/Rouge's treasure hunting stages. Although met with mixed reactions, Sonic Adventure 2 was overall regarded as one of the better outings SEGA's mascot has received in his 3D career.

With the game's release on Steam, I've tried this game out after I played the Gamecube port many years ago on, and personally I think it's a pretty decent port with HD graphics, a curious leaderboard system for the really hardcore fans of this game, and the 'Battle' content originally from the Gamecube port as DLC, which includes a pretty decent 2-player vs. mode and a overhaul of the main menu theme and other minor extra's.

The game's divided into 3 main gameplay modes, which you tackle as 3 characters on both the Hero and Dark side of the spectrum, complete with their own set of stages. As explained above the characters' gameplay styles are very drastically different, and most newcomers will often struggle with even finishing alot of the stages past the first few ones in the story, because of the somewhat harsh difficulty curve in the stage design. A new mechanic introduced in this game was the ranking system, in where dependant on how fast you cleared the stages and how well you overall did in your run, the higher the score, which is oftentimes easier said than done. Frequent issues were the rather clunky camera angles that shifted all over the place during gameplay, and you can't manually control the camera while moving around, alot of the enemies in Tails/Dr. Eggman's stages wold often spawn out of nowhere and collide with your character, taking a big chunk of damage and risking their high score streak, and that you can only detect one objective out of 3 at a time in the Knuckles/Rouge stages, and they usually randomize with the locations of the items, requiring you to both know the large stage layout and also collect them as quickly as possible, making A-ranking alot of the stages quite a difficult task in itself.

There's also the Chao Garden in where you can raise your virtual pet Chao, either for time-wasting fun, or to have them compete in races or karate mini-games. It's a nice distraction and improvement from the Chao Garden system in the original game, but raising them can be very time-consuming (unless you use a in-game glitch mechanic to abuse it) and you have to remain in the actual Chao Garden to wait for your Chao to mature and grow better stats. It's a alright inclusion, but nothing I would spend time on personally.

Flaws aside, Sonic Adventure 2 is still a title worth playing if you're a big fan of the blue hedgehog and it's a moderate price on the Steam Shop. Just don't expect too have a easy time on the game if you're trying to shoot for all the unlockable content in the game.

The story and game is the same way I remember it from years ago when I first discovered it (friends and people I knew back then were kind of ♥♥♥♥♥ to me for some reason. Saw them playing this and liked it and eventually got it for my Gamecube)

Graphics are a little better. I notice some graphics were changed which makes me a bit sad (got rings? is gone (likely because most people wouldn't get the reference now) and the ever so hilarious Chaos NOtwork bench ads are also gone,) and that covers most of the aesthetic changes anyways.

The Testing level is now far easier to reach in this game too (most notably via Eggman in his part of Cannon's Core).

Story wise, I still get slightly emotional at the end since Shadow doing a heroic sacrifice and remembering Maria's true wish snaps him out of his limbo of hatred for all of mankind.

Raising the chao is still as fun as ever, sad that the ever elusive and legit Tails chao is now impossible to get due to Phantasy Star Universe Episode 1 & 2 NOT being on Steam. Would be nice if Tails, Knuckles, and Amy chao were all added as FREE DLC. Would be a nice freebie to make the game funner.

Oh man, where to start? This game is huge. There are 2 storylines, the Hero one (Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic) and a Dark side (New character- Shadow, New Character -Rouge, Eggman, and Darth Vader) Okay, I'm kidding with Darth Vader! Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic both are speedy, so that is the kind of level they get. Oh no, the Knux and Rouge's levels. They need to find Master Emerald shards which are so hard to find. And the Tails and Eggman mech levels. You have to get to the end while shooting G.U.N robots.

Pros:
Speed
Good Music
New characters
Raise a chao
Don't need to buy a Dreamcast/ Gamecube
All levels are fun but sometimes frustrating
Storyline makes sense
Cons:
Eggman/ Tails over bottomless pits A LOT
Knuckles/ Rouge levels are tricky and giant
Some wicked camera angles
No Sonic 3 elemental shields

Do I reccomend this? Sort of, closer to the Yes answer instead of no, so buy it, but prepare to take a breath and count to 10. This is very frustrating on a few levels. IGN Walkthroughs can be your friend.

Overall 6.8 stars of a possible 10.

This isn't as good as Skyrim or the Genesis games, but it is pretty good. See if you like the demo, then buy it if so. Have a good day!

"This is Knuckles, and I'm back
I've been away for a while
But I'm here to kick some butt in Wild Canyon
I shall find all the pieces of the Master Emerald here
I'm gonna get those fools
They wanna play with my emeralds
They playin' with the wrong guy

E-chi-do-na, that's what I'm represtin'
Never seen a mic hog spit like a menace
Wild Canyon fun, I gotta chase a bat, ha
Yeah, Rouge, she's sexy and smooth
A double-cross spy thief that's out for my jewels, ah
I feel her watch in mysterious ways
That's why I stay on point like every single day
I gotta protect this place I do it for my race, ah, ah

Yeah, you know how it is
Yo, yo
Throw your hands up
Come on, come on

Ain't nobody gonna come here and eat my plate, no
Yo, what happened, my emerald's gone
Somebody gonna get theirs quick, my word is bond
Who coulda did this? That snitch named Rouge
When I catch her, I'm'a get her with these tools
There you are, c'mere little thief
Think you can fly and get away quick, uh-uh
Give up the emerald or die, I don't love you

Yeah, you know how it is
Yo, yo
Throw your hands up
Come on, come on"

This is one game that I always wanted. You have no idea how hard it was to set up a Dreamcast emulator or a GameCube emulator just to play this game. When I found out about the Steam release I had to buy immediately.

The multiplayer is tons of fun, the Great Clement even called it the best multiplayer ever in a Sonic game. When my sister wants to play with me more often than not this is the game we play.

One thing that this is sadly missing though is online multiplayer (the multiplayer is splitscreen only). That is a huge let down.

Sure this shows its age with glitches and stuff but you can let those slide, right? It's Sonic.

Controls can make the game unplayable. And frustrating. Camera moves irraticly leading to annoying deaths. Chao garden redeems this somewhat. 5/10

one of the most fuc͘ked up unplayable worthless ports ive ever played in my entire fuc͘king life ruins the entire game especially the camera and controls you will never even be able to get past the Sand Ocean level because whenever you jump the camera turns 180 degrees around and makes you fall into the quicksand and die and theres no way to move the camera at all
