I had a pretty large review here, detailing every tiny problem I had with the game. This was before I had finished the Last section of the game, where you're forced to go through six sections with all six characters and you share a lives pool between levels.

That, and the final boss, have made me realize that I don't need to justify giving this game a poor score by listing all the small things that are wrong with it. There are not a million things wrong with this game, there is only one: The game itself. It has nothing redeemable in my eyes. Poor level design. Disgusting camera. Laughable story that has the gall to try and takes itself seriously. Horrible voice acting. Bad sound mixing. The list could go on forever, but I'd just list everything in the game.

Many people will try to convince you that the game is "good". "Flawed, but good", a lot of them will say. But they are either children, have extremely low standards for what's acceptable, or are the most forgiving of Sonic fans.

I would recommend this game to no one. Everything it tries to do, other games have done infinitely better.

So, Sonic Adventure 2. What a game. What was once considered one of the best is now bashed by critics for being a horribly-aged mess. It's a shame too, because it is a really ambitious game.

The things I love most are the story and speed levels (obvious reasons lol).

The story was very good for the time it came out. Video games were starting to get more complex stories, and nowadays there is a higher standard than back then. Because of the new standard, people expect way too much out of Adventure 2's story. Personally, I enjoy it. Sure there are plot holes but does that even ♥♥♥♥ing matter? (no it doesn't)

The gameplay is divided into three gameplay types- speed stages, treasure hunting stages, and mech stages. Okay, so I'm going to get this out of the way first, I really love the treasure hunting stages. They are open and structured well, with good controls and a camera that I really never had a problem with. The speed stages are some of the best in the series, there is a good mix of speed and platforming, the only problem I have with them is the linearity. The mech stages are okay. Clunky controls, unfair enemy placement, and weird collision detection. Gamma's stages from SA were better.

I'm not good at ending these things, so do I think this is a good game? Yes. Do people look at it with unfairly high standards? Absolutely.

Okay. I'm going to review this as a person who doesn't have any nostalgic attachment to the game. I didn't play it when it came out, I actually just got to play it now that it is on steam. That being said, this is also the opinion of a Sonic Fan who's been playing Sonic for nearly 18 years. Thing is SA2 just happened to never get to me, for some reason I wouldn't bother emulating it and never got to buy a Dreamcast.

So let's start. First of all, this game, like every Sonic game, has the germ of a good idea. When you TALK about Sonic Adventure 2 to someone who hasn't played it, it sounds amazing. Fast-paced, full of action, speed, attitude, good music and nice-ish graphics. What's not to love?

Still, SA2 has a lot of major problems.
- Glitches (too many for a finished game);
- Wacky controls;
- Poor level design;
- HORRIBLE camera;
- Really bad enemy placement;
- Bad arrangement between fast-paced and slow-paced stages;
- Bad story (not that big of a deal for a Sonic game, but it tries too hard to be plot-driven, you can't have bad plot if it's a focus on the game, period);
- The good stages are infested with scripted segments;
- and finally, 2/3 of the game is pure garbage. You HAVE to play as Tails, Knuckles, Rouge and Eggman to finish it, and it's atrocious.

It makes me so confused as to why people think this is one of the best, if not the best, Sonic game, when it clearly isn't. I don't like the heavy criticism the franchise has gone through since, idk, 2006 (and it's "revival" with game grumps), but this is NOT a good game. You can have fun with it, sure. The Sonic and Shadow stages aren't bad at all, they have some flaws, mainly the camera and controls and the scripted things, but when you get to REALLY play it and take control of the game, it's great (Metal Harbor would be the best example). But that's less than one third of the ENTIRE GAME.

Probably the best part about this mess isn't even the Sonic and Shadow stages, it's probably the Chao Garden.

Only waste your money on this if:
- You're nostalgic about it and can have fun with it even tho it's bad;
- You want to play the Chao Garden;
- You're a die hard Sonic Fan who just want to try every game.

Otherwise, you have a bunch of other options on Steam like Generations, the original trilogy & Knuckles, Sonic CD, the first Sonic Adventure. Hell! even Sonic Lost World is an okay game and more worth your money than this.

And if you want a really good 3D Sonic game just play the modern Generations Stages, or stay tuned for rumors saying Sonic Colors will be ported for PC.

I really love this game. It is perhaps one of the best Sonic games ever. If you love Sonic, you should get this game. But, I think you already have played it before! So far, my favorite stages in the game are the Sonic and Shadow stages. The Tails and Robotnik (Eggman) stages are mediocre. So far, the only thing I don't like about this game are the Knuckles and Rouge stages. But they are not THAT bad though. I also loved the soundtrack, extremely catchy. This game was also a huge upgrade from the presentation part of the game more than Sonic Adventure. I reccomend you try Sonic Adventure 2 at least once.

ITS MY CHILDHOOD ON STEAM!

The game works well with a controller (as well as the original did at least).
Runs smooth, at least for me.

I have experienced a few crashes, where the game will just freeze, but the audio will continue on (its halted, but music and whatever sound was made when it crashed will play normally). It's happened twice, but that's the only problem I've had.

It's one of the better Sonic games out there, so if this wasn't a part of your childhood but you like Sonic, get it.

While it's deeply flawed, and hasn't aged all that great, it is still fun to play, especially if you enjoyed it back on the Dreamcast/Gamecube. All these years, and it's still the last Sonic game to feature a proper Chao Garden.
