About This Game

Overhaul Games brings MDK2 back to the PC in incredible high definition, with enhanced graphics, sound, and gameplay. See the classic action platformer the way it was meant to be seen, heard, and played... on a PC!

Kurt Hectic in his snazzy suit with ribbon chute is back to save the universe. This time he is teamed with the genius Dr. Hawkins and the 6-legged gun-toting robotic dog, Max. Together they must out-sneak, out-blast and out-think their enemies as they attempt to reclaim the Earth from a vile alien menace.

And this time they're in HD.

All three characters - Kurt, Doctor Hawkins and Max are playable, each has his own levels, powers and items and a completely different gameplay focus. Kurt is about stealth and sniping, the Doctor has a few direct attacks but also has the ability to create items and effects out of simple household objects, while Max is a cigar smoking, quad gun toting demolition squad of a dog.

I did not have any problems like some of the other reviewers. The graphics is decent for such an old game and the HD version looks good. Gameplay is as fun as I remember and just as funny too.

If you were a fan of MDK 2 you should get this HD version.

One does wonder why this HD remake was even necessary, if no real effort wasn't even going to be put into it anyway...

The only things getting an HD lift is character models, everything else is mostly untouched.
All cut scenes are played in different screen resolutions.
The music freaks out quite often.

To finish it all off it doesn't even work for most AMD card users.

In conclusion, don't buy this.
Stick with the original as it will run much smoother.

This game is hilarious and mowing down the hordes with 4 machine guns is quite satisfying. However this HD edition has some technical issues, notably that the controller support in the options is a lie, M&K is the only option. Also the last 3 levels can be a bit annoying. Don't pay full price for it.

Thought this would be a whole overhaul of the original game, with higher standards of new generation systems.

I was wrong.

Higher polygon models for the main characters (Kurt, Max, Dr, and bosses) and the rest are plain old characters from the original, and texture goes the same.

Some animations are played in the original 4:3 screen with black bars on each side for 16:9 monitors, and occational sound glitch, that you will have to exit the game and re-run to bring the sound back to normal.

Don't get this game, instead get the original MDK 2.

This attempt to touch up the original is basically lazy, half-♥♥♥♥♥ and bare-bones and bearly working.
There's support for modern resolution and some of the textures have been replaced with higher definition ones. Most of the models have similarly replaced with higher polygon counts replicas.

Unfortunatly not all the textures have been replaced so there are occasional glaring low resolution surfaces. The comics panels of the opening remain the same from the original. The cutscene animations were not redone, so many of the improved models move akwardly, even erratically. And all the cutscenes cut the resolution to the original aspect ratio.

There's gamepad support, but it does not work. There are multiple bugs and save failures. Glitches galore and general feeling that only the bare minimum was done to ensure the game runs on modern systems.

It's a shame, beacuse MDK2 is a good game that really deserves better.

Do not buy this piece of trash! It's called "MDK 2 HD" and you might think it supports 1080p. But even if you play it using a 1080p resolution, it's not 16:9 but 4:3. You've got two big black colums left and right on your screen. Seriously, what the hell. It can't be THAT hard to make widescreen possible in game from 2000 in the year 2014. Jesus Christ the almighty, I'm mad. This is not how you make a remake. Blunder of the century.

Broken hunk of garbage.

I loved this on Dreamcast, and to a lesser extent the armageddon version on PS2, so I got excited when I heard this was coming to steam.

Time to nope the ♥♥♥♥ outta here on this one. If you DARE have an AMD card you need a menu bug fix or you wont be able to tell what the hell is going on.

feel like playing this one from the couch? well too bad. controller support is broken as well. I tried a wired xbox pad, wireless xbox pad with direct input driver, and an old saitek controller, all of which failed to be detected in the game, on three different computers on a mix of windows 8 and 7, with nvidia and AMD GPUs.

AVOID.

a fun game that might be worth your while if your a fan.
but the HD port has frame rate problems, VERY glitchy, and some parts (like mini-games) are SD
plus parts of the game can be very very irritating (and very hard).
and ATI users might have to check the forums on how to get the game too work

Buy with CAUTION!!!!

MDK2 was an odd but awesome game when I first played it. The three different playable characters behaved completely differently, and had completely different playstyles for their respective levels.

The game looked great for its time, and much of that has translated well into this HD remake. The textures have been revamped, the models improved, and the audio is less tinny than it used to be.

It plays and runs great, and the core of the gameplay remains untouched if you don't choose the new easy/extra hard difficulties.

A game with great humor and just a pervasive oddness throughout.

Back in the days of the Pentium and the PS1 there was a little company known as Shiny Entertainment. In addition to a bunch of well-animated games by a less than scrupulous fellow, they made a rather surreal third-person shooter called MDK. Starring a janitor named Kurt Hectic and his parachute-equipped Coilsuit, it went on to become a Cult Classic.

In 2000, a sequel came out for the PS2, Dreamcast and PC. This game, while written by a different team, still held up well in spite of feeling a bit different overall from the original. This change in writers came with a requisite change of tone - Whereas MDK1 was a very surreal game and derived much of it's humor from that, MDK2 loves it's refuge in audacity, and has a very action movie feel to it. For example, in few other games will you see a Robotic Dog with a Chain Smoking habit quad-wield miniguns? In spite of the different writing, MDK2 still was a good game simply by virtue of being fun as hell to play.

In 2011, Overhaul Games brought MDK2 up to speed. The new models and textures look very good and the game is solid as ever, and the System Requirements are modest as ever (Though you're still gonna need newer hardware to play the HD flavor). My only real gripe? Overhaul did not put much effort into making the game make bettr use of widescreen. Most UI elements (such as the zoom on Kurt's sniper rifle) are still in 4:3, causing a fair deal of letterboxing. This does not make the game any less playable, mind, but is more of a presentation nitpick than anything.

No Xbox controller support. Text is broken on ATI. Most parts are forced to 4:3. Less detailed than the original at some areas. Audio sounds worse and distorted. No Steamworks extras. Benchmark facility is missing. Detail options are missing. The lavatory mirrors STILL doesn't work!

I love the original but it does seem this HD re-release does have a few bugs about it.
For one I can't go to customize my controls, the game simply closes down.
It looks good other than that but based on what I've heard it does simply have a few too many bugs to make it enjoyable. Pick up the original instead. I think I prefer the old look to HD anyhow.

Re-armed and Reloaded in HD; MDK2 is nothing much more than a satyrical throwback to 90's action/platform games where a fast trigger finger and fancy footwork around the alarming number of enemies will see you scraping through each relentless fight at the will of a pumping techno soundtrack that makes you feel like an unstoppable superhero, from start to finish.
