Similar to LEGO® CITY Undercover for the Wii U and 3DS, and the upcomming LEGO® Marvel Super Heroes later this year, the game features a large open world with hours of replay value. While the storyline may take less than 10 hours, wanting to 100% complete this game can take over 30 hours even with guides. You can choose between 50 various DC Universe characters to play from, including the regular Batman heroes/villians and even the Justice League. You start with a few which you unlock through the storyline and you'll have to unlock the others through challenges (fighting those characters, obtaining a certain % of Gold Bricks). Every unlockable character (which aren't obtained through the storyline) can be purchased with "studs", the currency in-game which you obtain through breaking objects and by touching these bricks in the world. A lot of LEGO® objects are breakable in this game!
You'll always play two characters at once, you'll be able to switch through these 2 while playing, or swap one partner or yourself with another character (the last one only applies in "Free Play"). Be warned though: every character has a set default abilities, while Robin and Batman are unique, characters like Superman and General Zod share the same movepool (basically a reskin/clone). This occurs often and some characters like Scarecrow doesn't even have any special abilities (while you'll expect the usual fear gas as a move). Batman and Robin share their own set of various suits you'll have to reach through a "Suit converting platform", and to make the game easier some unlockable characters partially have similar moves of those suits. This may speed up certain points in the game whereas you'll require such suit which is located 5 minutes from that building you want to climb to get a Gold Brick.
Completing this game 100% includes unlocking all 50 characters, a large amount of unique vehicles, 250 Gold Bricks, 20 Red Bricks, obtaining 150 Mini-kits and save a lot of citizens. All of these pieces are scatterd through the large open world and every piece requires a puzzle to earn these. Every puzzle might require certain abilities, such as magnetic powers, lasers, freezing, superstrength, explosions, electricity, glass shattering, brick-breaking, brick-building and the usual thinking. Some Gold Bricks are unlocked through races with vehicles. Red Bricks are cheats in-game, such as godmode and multiple studrate (up to a whopping 3840x rate!).
The game offers fast travel through various locations on the world map (unlocked fast travels are marked by large blue beacons, seeable in the air), but it'll require you to reach that point first and boot the local teleport computer (unbooted teleports are marked by large red beacons).
Various vehicles are present in the game with their own unique behaviour. You'll have to unlock these on your own by completing challenges or purchasing them with "studs". A lot of these vehicles are actually references to LEGO® Batman/CITY sets, like the well-known Bane's Mole Machine from set 6860 - The Batcave. Certain vehicles have specialized weapons (like explosions or just regular bullets), some are purely for fast movement.
The storyline of the game offers about 15 chapters, and first-time playing may take up about 10 hours of gameplay. Every chapter is unique on it's own and has unique puzzles for certain Mini-kits, which are required to unlock mini vehicles. Completing them for the first time will never give you a 100% score for that level; you'll have to replay them on "Free Play" mode with various unlockable characters to complete certain puzzles. There's also one hidden chapter, but you'll have to find that one out yourself.
If you happen to own two controllers or one keyboard and one controller for your PC, you can play this game with a friend. Your friend will play your partner in the game and you'll be able to play every chapter or roam together in the large open world from LEGO® Batman 2.
