About This Game

Vlambeer's SUPER CRATE BOX is coming to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list. Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it's time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with tight controls, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack.

This review recommends Vlambeer's Super Crate Box, an arcade action platformer, as a brilliantly designed game with a unique gameplay twist.

[. . .] The real lesson to be learned from Super Crate Box is that a gameplay innovation can be simple and yet brilliant. As long as the primary objective is to build a game that is fun to play, and which has scalable arcade-style difficulty, a game built around a unique mechanic as cohesively as Super Crate Box is constructed can yield amazing results. You remember how in Red Dwarf there was that drug that you could get addicted to by looking at it? Well I am starting to think that Vlambear is putting that in their games, and speaking of addictive substances from Red Dwarf, this game is better than life.

Pros:
  • Original concept
  • Very simple, easy to grasp
  • Balanced
  • Challenging
Cons:
  • Sound is a bit harsh
  • Not completely polished (menus are a bit laggy, character control could be improved ever so slightly)
  • Random crashes
  • Steam will still think you're playing after you quit, making you have to restart the softer (that's the only way I found to fix it)

Summery: A few bugs makes it hard to really enjoy this game, but even then, it's definitly worth checking out. Who knows, maybe it'll work better for you

Super Crate Box: Game of the Year, sorry, CENTURY

Super Crate Box a long awaited open world third-person shooter/platformer, met not only what we were hoping for but gave us more than anyone could ever imagine. Super Crate Box sends us to another dimension in a world of only a few pixels (however the game still looks awesome) where you can fight aliens of all different kinds; big green, small green, angry little red ones etc. aliens kill you in one touch, so you the survivor has to gather guns with unlimited ammo that are supplied in crates to kill off these wretched creatures. You start off with a dead on ordinary pistol to then find loads of other random weapons in the crates, these include but are not limited to: the minigun, dual pistols, machine gun, laser gun, etc. At the bottom of the platforms there is a hole with some fire in it -for no apparent reason, if the monsters fall into the fire it turns them angry and they travel much faster making it a harder time for you.

Not only has the creator's given us so much already, but they provide us as well with not 1, not 2 but 3 maps to play in, each one getting harder as you unlock them.

Super Crate Box also gives us a range of characters to play as and to unlock as you get a higher score. For each map you get normal level or SFMT level, normal is obviously average and SFMT is… absolute carnage.

And last but not least the leveling up is spectacular, you would think that how many aliens you kill provide you points however it is actually how many crates you collect, you can tell the developers were really thinking out of the box this time. Players of SCB have reached miraculous scores, you can see their scores at supercratebox.com.
Despite the lack of textures in some places of the map Super Crate Box has well earned its place in in the hall of AWESOME games. I have 32 hours on the game now and I am looking forward to spending many more.
