What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? Most games start good and get worse as time goes on. Whatever you think of the first few moments of this one, it gets better from there. The end game is amazing, because by then you've built your ship to suit your play style, but it can't generate enough energy to power everything at once. The game isn't truly tense until you have to give up powering what you want in order to power what you need.

Definitely not a bad game, but gets repetitive after you know how to answer to random events. Also many of the ships you will never unlock without beating the game, so good luck with that.

There are some HUGE recommendations I would make for anyone that plans on playing this.

FTL: Editor
Basically asked you to unlock all ships among other cheats.

Captains Edition
A better overall ftl experience.

This game sets the standard of the rogue-like genre. It is difficult to find a better rogue-like game than FTL. Great game and one of the best overall games on steam. Pure class.

A must for anyone who liked old school choose your own adventure books/games as a kid.

A warning though, it's brutal. You will die a hundred times before you succeed. You will lose your favourite crew member, you will watch as fire spreads until it engulfs your only hope of fighting back. You will regret almost every decision you make. But that will not stop you coming back for more, until you feel you've conquered it and you'll never make the same mistakes again. That's when you overconfidently send your crew to take over an enemy ship, a missile destroys your crew teleporter, and your brave men die horrifically in the fire you've created.

10/10 will die again

"FTL: Faster Than Light is a fantastic rogue like. Its frustrating and almost impossible to beat. I like that."
-Boogie2988's Games

That is accurate. My review is close:

"FTL: Faster Than Light is a rogue like that takes place in space. It's beyond frustrating while being impossible to beat with skill alone. I hate that."
-Ssenkrad II

Take that for what it is worth.

I really tried to like this game since it came so very highly recommended, but I ended up just smacking my head against the wall of RNG. I checked out guides after 10 hours, and confirmed that I had learned all of the strategy there was to the game, and that all I was missing was luck. Getting to the final boss didn't feel like anything special because of this, I just finally got a few good rolls of the dice, and did everything that I was already doing. I think I would have had a lot more fun with this game if I could have just explored every planet, instead of being forced to move on by the advancing enemy.

Pros:
- great music
- very responsive controls that are intuitive
- the strategy that does exist is well thought out and fun to master

Cons:
- Your first jump put you too close to a star? Don't worry, your second one will to. And then you're dead.
- RNG your way to an easy victory or a crushing defeat, no user skill required!

"do you think FTL is a good game?"

TLDR: I think it's a fantastic game, FTL is a gold standard.

But since you asked, I'll say why:

The gameplay is great. You really want to start on Easy, and use the pause button very frequently. It's really a turn based game don't try to play it in real time. Then just try stuff, explore solar systems, and have a great time. Normal mode is hard enough that lots of people never beat it, and then they added a hard more that really is tough.

The graphics are very simple but also very clean and clear. There is a lot more variation visually than you might think, but you will always know exactly what is happening at a glance. The music is really, really great. You don't need to be a fan of any specific type of music to appreciate how well the tone is constantly transmitted to you. Personally I wind up turning the music off in any game I play after a while, because you have heard it sooo many times, but with FTL I turn it back on, sometimes.

There is lots of content to see. The different types of ships can change the tactical combat hugely, all kinds of things will have effects on the interactions you will have. Some people get frustrated because they have a hard time beating the final boss of the game, but the truth is that exploring the galaxy in various ways and encountering various things, the basic gameplay itself, is the point. The first time I got to the boss it was an accident and I was disappointed because I didn't get to finish the delivery quest I was working on.

I have over 100 hours logged into Steam, and this game has gotten me through at least one long internet-free vacation on top of that. Most of that was before they added a huge, free expansion pack, too. If tactical turn based rougue like lite whatever space exploration sounds fun to you, at all, you will get some time out of this.

The cherry on top of the FTL sundae is the price, it's been in a few bundles and goes 70-85% off pretty frequently. It's worth it at any price, really.

A lot of people say that the final boss is "too hard"
yes, the boss is hard, but think about it, its a flagship that has to control, an ENTIRE fleet of rebels, so duh, it has to be strong.
the game is randomly generated. and one of the BEST GAMES EVER

Love this game, I'm not usually into rogue likes but FTL makes the experience casual enough for beginners to pick it up and yet deep enough for a more hardcore experience.

The art is simple but compelling, and FTL is great on the iPad as well as PC.

Addictive and fun to play, FTL is the space roguelike that will have you desperatley struggling time and time again to complete it. Along the way you can unlock different ship layouts, recruit different races with different stats, but different weapons and upgrade different parts of your ship and, well every game will be different is what I'm trying to say! Very enjoyable and not very expensive, definitely worth a look if you are interested.

Absolutely fantastic game... Great customizability. Unique play-through each time. Many different ships to try. Amazing soundtrack!

I'm generally a multiplayer guy but this is probably the one and only singleplayer game that I repeatedly come back to to spend hours of my life playing.

Please try FTL! It's only $9.99 at full price, can be much less on sale. Totally worth it either way.

A solid silly, but frustration game.
This game features it's randomized encounters, with random difficulty. Expect to die a lot and whatever you do FOR THE LOVE OF GOD and All your game progress DO NOT USE WINDOW's X to CLOSE (Rage quit the game). You will Delete your Data by doing so. I've done it twice.
Quit the game with the Escape and Button, (Quit) In game to save your data.
Over than that Big Bug, the game is silly if redundant.
You spend hours grinding out achievements for new Ships only to discover that the first ship you get is the best ship. Very Ironic indeed.
The Sound Track and random probability outcome can make things Nerve-racking.

Word of Advice if you have 4 crew Members DO NOT BOARD STATIONS Or SHIPS, Your Crew is SO IMPORTANT.
This game is good time killer, best you watch the clock.
