So I have 16.5 hrs on record. I haven't beaten the game. I'm probably never gonna beat the game. Sometimes the RNG punches you in the throat. Most of the time the RNG punches you in the throat. But that's okay because the fun part is trying.

Super addicting Sci-Fi Roguelike.

Easy to learn, very hard to master.

Combat is tactical and engaging. Plot and lore interesting. And plenty of opportunity to role-play.

If you ever wanted to play your own personal Captain Picard, give this game a shot.

With 30k+ reviews and 97% thumbs up, I would say even if it doesn't look like all that much fun watching the videos it's worth picking up to see if you like it.

I picked this game up a couple of years ago and seem to come back to it now and it again - it's truly a gem. With an incredible mod community (Captain's Edition + Better Planets/Backgrounds, Endless Pace) you have so much content for $10 that you will get your money's worth 10x over.

Be warned, this is the kind of game where you'll find yourself telling yourself "ok, just one more jump/finsih the sector/get to the quest marker and then I'll go to bed" and find yourself up to 2:30 in the morning.

I really can' t recommend this game strongly enough

What's a good way to sum up this roguelike spaceship simulator?

Well, in one moment you could get very lucky in acquiring hefty scraps rewards, new crewmen, even say augments or weapons that give you a better chance at surviving to the end of the game. In another moment, you could be suffering the loss of a crewman through an event or be taking on the wrong kind of ship in the wrong type of environment... where you either win with heavy ship damages/casualties or lose in a very horrific fashion.

See, this is FTL: Faster Than Light in a nutshell... a game where you play as a Federation Crusier on a mission back to deliver something to HQ while outrunning the Rebel Army within different sectors that has a lot things that are probably going to kill you if you're not lucky/prepared. Now much of this game revolves around a few things: luck, how well you can operate within different given situations, and what your style of ship-to-ship combat pertains to. A game like this, I feel at least, will sometimes be more luck-driven than as to how well you can handle a given situation. Of course, if you have certain augments/crewmen/weapons/etc when you arrive at some certain events, it can make traveling through the various sectors that you will come across a heck of a lot easier.

Something to note: As with many roguelikes, you have to constantly stay ahead of the Rebel Army, indicated by a massive wall on your ship's radar as you jump from beacon to beacon within each sector. Now I don't think I need to say this, but it is ill advised to go straight to the exit of each sector. If you want to make it all the way to endgame, you must explore as much of the sector as possible while staying ahead of the Rebel Army before you're forced to leave the sector at the exit beacon. Doing this, you can get the most out of each sector in terms of scraps (among other things) to help upgrade your ship as well as buy weapons, augments, ship systems, and various other things from shops that you will come across.

Word of warning: Make sure you plot your course through each sector thoroughly so that you will reach the exit while getting as much out the sector as possible... otherwise you may end up at dead-end points which will severely hamper your progress... or worse make you backtrack through the Rebel Fighter ships of the Rebel Army... which, to keep in mind, they do NOT mess around. Also, keep in mind of what sectors you visit... because each one has their own events, enemy ships, and hazards to deal with. Engi Sectors, for example, have ships that are bad to go against if you're particularly fond of using drones, Zoltan Sectors have you, more often than not, dealing with Zoltan Ships that have Super Shields that can't easily be bypassed with teleporters (unless you're on the Advanced Edition which offers a specific bypass augment), Mantis Sectors has you against ships that will try to board and kill off your crew, and so on and so forth.

If you're lucky though, you may come across specific events that will help you in unlocking newer ships (which can alternatively be done for each one by beating the game with a specific ship)... which for some is easy to do, and others are easier said than done. Each starting ship that you unlock have different perks, advantages, etc. that can offer a different and unique experience to the game.

I'm rambling at this point... so do I recommend this game? Sure, why not. If you like the notorious roguelike genre of games, I'd say go for it... it's worth the money, and you'll likely be spending hours upon hours unlocking each type of ship while taking on the different challenges that the game has to offer... while likely experiencing some frustrating difficulty spikes during gameplay.

Remember the old text based adventures that were choice based? Probably not.
But FTL is kinda like that only that you gain some level of control over your fate. A lot of things are randomly generated so you can't really plan ahead.

You are the mastermind of a ship and its crew, you are fighting against time to get across space. In order to survive the many ordeals of spacefaring you need to get money to recruit people, buy fuel, missiles and ship parts. You can also flat out upgrade the ship and the parts you own. But since you can't plan ahead you never know what you need, and neither are the shop offering the same items or are in the same place. So that's a game of dice.

In the end you will most likely die on your way to the goal, but you learned some sort of valuable lesson, probably.
You will feel frustrated but also ready to get right up in the saddle and try again.

FTL is an impressive indie title which grasps players by the neck and makes them sweat with every decision as they are thrust into the threshold of space.

FTL's Soundtrack is incredibly well done. It has a retro style to it, but that doesn't mean it is cheap. Far from it, actually, as the soundtrack professionally weaves emotions of adventure, battle, and most of all, going against all odds as you survive against the difficulty of your journey. This can be noticed as you can hear the happier, adventurerous themes while you explore the systems, or the intensity of the final battle, amplified by the drums. Also the overall melody of the soundtrack feels like something straight out of a space adventure, which helps it develop a little bit more of a personality, a personality, which, most games seem to have left behind.

FTL's Graphical style is unique, it's top down and you see into the ship, and the characters are little sprites. At release, it was interesting to see a game go back to this style, and going back to it, it actually ages quite well. It's not visually impressive, but it doesn't look bad either. Also, this means the game runs on basically anything.

The art style actually complements the gameplay, as the gameplay is the most important part of the game. Looking at the ship from a top-down perspective allows you to make tactical decisions based on the room, based on what is happening in the room, and based on who, or what, is in the room. For instance, is there a fire in the next room? Can we starve the room of oxygen to remove the fire? Can we lock the doors to keep intruders at bay and possibly kill them using the oxygen deprived environment or the raging inferno? Is the hull breached in the room, and is it safe enough to fix it before we suffer critical damage?

These are the kinds of questions you will constantly ask yourself over the course of the game, and these are the sort of questions that will keep you playing.

In FTL, you command a ship with your crew, and you may unlock more ships ( and therefore, more playstyles ), which will allow you to make completely different journeys each time, especially considering the fact that no journey will ever be the same. Each ship has a different crew, and you can even name the crew, making the experience just a little bit more personal.

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Er, speaking of the crew, every ship needs a crew. When you lose all of your crew members, you will lose the game. You'll also lose if the ship is blown up, but that was a given.
The crew is a vital part of the gameplay experience. You'll need multiple members to utilize every system in the ship, and I'll talk about systems later. The crew is needed to repair critical damage, man systems, fight in close quarters, and participate in various events that you will encounter.

There are different species, all with different benefits. Here's a few:
Human - Trains skills faster
Rockman - No Fire Damage, 150 Health, slowed movement.
Zoltan - Provides 1 free power to room, 75 health, explodes on death.
Engi - Repairs fast, horrible at combat.

Now, these aren't all of the species, because I want to let you discover them, and because it'll be a nice surprise. Certain species can have a positive influence on events, so be sure to add a touch of diversity to the crew.

FTL has a perma-death system. There is no checkpoints. No savestates, or whatever. No going back until you die or complete your mission.
Victory or death.

So, how do you survive? This sounds tough.

Well, a big part of survival in FTL is the combat, because well, there are so many things that will try to kill you.
The weapons you have on your ship play a huge role in this, so let's list a couple to give you a good understanding.

Lasers - Simple, but effective. They are versatile, but have no particular strength. They are easily blocked by enemy shields.
Since lasers have many variations, they can be very powerful if you've got the right strategy in mind.

Missiles - This type of weapon will penetrate enemy shields and has a good chance to do some solid damage and even breach hulls, but it is easily countered by defensive drones.
These weapons consume one missile, so they are a bit costly to maintain.

Weapons aren't the only important thing in battle.

Systems are powerful additions to your arsenal, especially the essential ones. They are just as important as weapons, if not more important.
Shields and engines are the big two that will keep you alive. Shields stop damage, and engines allow you to escape and evade.
The weapons system is also important. If these don't work, you can't fight back. And if you can fight back, you'll probably die too.
You also need oxygen, because without it, the crew can't breathe, obviously, and die.
And there are also sensors, which serve as your eyes ( aside from the crew ).

Now here is where crew and systems come hand-in-hand:
Having someone man a particular system makes it work a bit better. Keeping the crew alive will reward them with expertise as they get better at what they do.
A good pilot means you can evade a bit more. Someone good at repairing can fix things faster than the regular guy.
A crew good at combat, and armed with a teleporter, can jump onto the enemy vessel and kill all of the enemy.

The importance of systems make it that much more tense in combat. Let's say, for instance, that with a couple of hits to my ship, I'm dead.
If I don't pull off the next battle like a pro, I'm done for.
Here's where systems and weapons work together to create an impressive gameplay dynamic:
I've got powerful shields that lets me absorb the enemy laser fire, but they won't hold up forever.
I've got two missiles, and two lasers, and my upgraded sensors allows me to see inside the enemy ship.
I notice that they only have two crew members for whatever reason, so I target their weapons, to keep myself alive, and then I focus on the room where the second enemy crew member is, killing him with a lucky hull breach and fire in the room.
That crew member happened to be manning the shield systems at the time, so I get to easily pound the enemy with lasers.
The last enemy, who is trying to escape, rushes to the cockpit, which I target. With the cockpit in ruins, he has to repair it before he can escape. And he can't fight back without an active weapon system.
He's done for, and for now, I live.

Let's fast forward a bit, and let's say I went into a nebula. My sensors are down, and my crew are my only eyes on the ship. Even I don't know who, or what is on my ship. We don't even have that much power to spare, so I can only power the vital systems, and only use one of my weapons.
I battle an enemy, and he takes out my shield, but I can't spare anyone to fix it because he also got lucky and hit my oxygen at the same time. Since I couldn't tell what was happening on my ship, a fire broke out and is now consuming half of my ship. My engines are burned before I can deprive the room of oxygen, and we're sitting ducks. One final laser hits my ship, and our story ends.

Another big part of survival is based on the choices you make.
In FTL, you are sometimes forced to make tough decisions that can either help you, or hurt you.
Sometimes you will ask yourself, 'Is this risk worth it? What if I lose someone?'
Sometimes you will tell yourself, 'I have to take this risk. If I don't, we're going to die.'
While some people argue that it is too luck based and random at times, I have to disagree, because this adds to the tense nature of the choices you make.
In real life, when you make a decision, you don't know what will, or could happen, and in these random events, sometimes you will come across a bit of text that reveals a bit more of the universe to you, giving the game a little bit more personality as you move faster than light.

Amazing Starship Fighting Game
Pure strategy, each ship differs in its tactics, strengths, and weaknesses.
One of the few games I would say is worthwhile buying at its full list price.

The metrics of this game are quick and easy to learn. Despite the pausing feature, battles can still be pretty hectic.
The feature of not saving more than one game at a time kinda sucks, but I understand why it has been done that way because you can't save your game and reload it in the even that you die, it adds the "every decision counts" aspect. Even if things go wrong, you don’t get that deeps angry or dissatisfaction that you just wasted X amount of time for no progress.

Its simple enough that even lesser machines can run this game easily, and their user will still enjoy the full affects of the game.

They even updated this game and added a lot of new ships, weapons and features FOR FREE. No nickel and dime ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t from this maker. I would purchase more products from this studio based on that fact alone. (if you pre-purchase games or dlc, especially dlc on a BETA version of a game, I wish bad things upon you. You are ruining the gaming world. In short, ♥♥♥♥ you, die).

The only, ONLY, ONLY thing that this game has done that I don’t like at all... no achievements... seriously, what the ♥♥♥♥ is that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. They have achievements in the game, why is that so hard to code over to steam...

I would give this a game a 9/10.

First and foremost, this is an RNG game and your experience will change greatly each time you start a new game. Sometimes you will get "unlucky" and not find anything useful and end up getting destroyed, other times you will quickly get a Zoltan Shield and Ion Blaster for your Kestrel cruiser early in the game. This game is incredibly fun, although quite agonizing at times, trying to rush around putting out fires and getting your crew back to the medbay before they die. Probably one of the best games I have bought in a long time, and one I will continue to play for years.

If I'd have to choose only one game for the rest of my days, I would choose FTL. This rogue like experience is just to immense and always different, and despite this game is basicaly on every device I own and despite the total time I have spend with it, there is still space for exploration with your crew.

This game is a rollercoaster of emotions.

>Start (modded) easy playthrough as layout B of the Lanius ship
>Want to get Mantis ship so teleporter/clone bay is great

>clone bay makes sure I don't lose my crew accidentally by destroying the ship when they're inside
>All goes well for some time, but still no Mantis ship

Crew member selection can be a bit buggy

Frankly I think the crew teleporter is op for the enemy

Hit/Miss ratio can get absurd somtimes

Some encounters are choice based with either desicion ending up good or bad, whether or not it is good or bad is totally based on luck and not skill whatsoever.

Ex: "You have landed on a planet with the distress beacon and a lone crashland survivor emerges."

"You decide to welcome him aboard your crew. Unfortunatley he is mentally unstable and blows himself and part of the ship up with a consealed bomb."

I was doing so well... I evaded asteroids and solar flares (after a few false starts and, er, stops). I took down scummy pirates and lurking drones. I upgraded my ship's mighty shields, and laughed as enemy fire skipped harmlessly off of them. I helped out those in need and put paid to those who were preying on the weak. Just doing my small bit to maintain order in the galaxy, folks.

I must've missed a "last chance for gas" sign at that last outpost, though... I got a bit too generous helping out a stranded ship, took a wrong turn at the Ohek Nebula, and ended up stranded myself. Adrift in the vastness of space, I watched the advancing enemy front loom near on my ship's sensors. I could only watch and curse their unknown names as they spotted me, and mashed my glorious vessel like a gnat.

I mourned for a moment, then hit Restart. :)

Getting serious:

I'm enjoying this game. Playing FTL reminds me a bit of playing UnReal World, in the sense that little stories build up in my mind around the characters' (and ships') progress through the game. Also in the sense of "get used to getting dead a lot and starting over", especially at first, and while learning how best to use new ships as you unlock them. Random generation of playthroughs means that the dreaded RNG can give with both hands, or turn and sting like a stepped-on nest of wasps, without being so harsh or time-and-effort intensive as to suck the fun out of it for me.

The keyboard controls are pretty simple and can be remapped in game options, or you can mouse a lot of it. The game can be paused so your next combat move (or a bio break) can be considered without rushing. Setup of a new game is quick, and if you don't want to change your initial ship selection after the end of a game, you can Restart after your ship's demise. This will start a new game immediately on a new randomly generated map, with the same starting ship setup and starting crew you had last time. That's been a really nice feature.

I wanted a fun little game that wouldn't take up much system power while multitasking, and this ended up being ideal.

This game is more like a simple version of Star Trek. You command a small crew, which can grow by recruiting through different means other characters of different races. Your ship has different components needed to travel and fight against other ships.
The weapons vary and can be useful if you know how to deploy them. For example, the Ion weapon does not cause damage but can disrupt an enemy system. Target their shields and let a Combat Droid damage their ship.
This game does play hard ball, even in Easy mode. Your choices feel like it can be 50/50. Should you help the ailing ship? Do so and you can be ambushed. While I do not mind this, what I do mind are the other choices that may cost me a member of my crew in this game. Replacing them is often difficult.
The biggest draw for me with this game is you constantly want to see what the next star system has. Will it be a pirate vessel waiting to attack you? Will it be an ailing Federation ship that has a person inside who will join your crew? You constantly want to keep playing to see.
