************************

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Key Features:

  • Complex Strategic Gameplay - Give orders to your crew, manage ship power distribution and choose weapon targets in the heat of battle.
  • Play at Your Own Speed - Pause the game mid-combat to evaluate your strategy and give orders.
  • Unique Lifeforms and Technology – Upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien races.
  • Be the Captain You Want - Hundreds of text based encounters will force you to make tough decisions.
  • Randomized Galaxy - Each play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your decisions. No two play-throughs will be quite the same.
  • No Second Chances! - Permadeath means when you die, there's no coming back. The constant threat of defeat adds importance and tension to every action.

This game is excellent, I won't deny that for a second. It's very challenging, has what appears to be a very simple design but a serious learning curve. A wide variety of tactics and ship loadouts available (though most ships naturally require unlocking). What I will say though is the game can be outright unfair. There are times when you can get utterly RNG ♥♥♥♥ed. It's not a good mechanic and something that tends to happen in these types of games. *spoilers* the rebel flagship the final boss of the game is definitely one of the single most poorly designed last bosses of any videogame I've ever played. It's multiphase and practically game breaking in the way it acts. And you require very specific loadouts to be able to defeat it. Though that boss is horrendously designed this still a great game. *spoilers* So if you can handle what I mentioned beforehand the game overall is very satisfying and rewarding minus the sometimes outright cruel RNG.

Okay so lets go through what makes this a good game: The music, It's pretty good. Maybe some good polish for what little content it has.
Now what makes it a bad game: Overuse of RNG for EVERY ♥♥♥♥ING ASPECT
Complete lack of content IN 4-5 10 MINUTE PLAYTHROUGHS YOU WILL HAVE SEEN EVERYTHING THE GAME HAS TO OFFER BESIDES NEW SHIPS THAT DON'T REALLY CHANGE THE GAMEPLAY AND HAVE RNG BASED REQUIREMENTS TO EVEN OBTAIN.
A completely UNFAIR final boss that REQUIRES you to not only get PERFECT RNG rolls but also REQUIRES you to use a certain playstyle that REMOVES ANY REPLAYABILITY that it would otherwise have. IF YOU DON'T SET YOUR SHIP UP IN A CERTAIN WAY/ARE UNABLE TO YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BEAT IT PERIOD.
It has ONE MODE THAT YOU WILL COMPLETE IN ABOUT AN HOUR AT MOST. THAT'S IT. NO MULTIPLAYER, NO REPLAYABILITY PAST 1-2 FAILED REPLAYS ALL YOU GET IS ONE RANDOMLY GENERATED CAMPAIGN THAT WOULD OFFER LEGITIMATE REPLAYABILITY IF THE GAME ACTUALLY HAD ANY CONTENT IN IT. YOU WILL BE REPLAYING THE SAME (special) EVENTS BY YOUR THIRD PLAYTHROUGH. (BTW playthrough when I use it means until you die.
THERE ARE AROUND 6 RACES AND ABOUT 4 FACTIONS EACH OF THE LATTER ONLY DIFFERING IN RANDOM EVENTS AND EVEN THOSE ARE IN ESSENCE THE SAME. THE FORMER IS ACTUALLY SLIGHTLY INTERESTING BECAUSE THE DIFFERENT RACES ARE GOOD AT DIFFERENT THINGS THE CATCH? IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT RACE/S YOU USE BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL ♥♥♥♥ AT EVERYTHING THEY DO UNTIL THEY GET ENOUGH EXPERIENCE AT WHICH POINT A RACE BONUS IS ILRELEVENT. ALSO THE RACES THEMSELVES ARE FAIRLY GENERIC: HUMANS, MACHINE ALIENS, WARRIOR BUG/MANTIS ALIENS, ALIENS MADE OF ROCK, TELEPATHIC SLUG ALIENS, EXTREMELY RARE CRYSTAL ALIENS THAT HAVE A DEBUFF THAT MAKES TRYING TO INTEGRATE THEM WITH A NORMAL CREW NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.
There's a small number of weapons and good variety between them. For instance: Three different leveled lasers that each fire more lasers and take longer to reload the higher the tier/level is. A teleporting bomb. A flak cannon (or two). A few interchangable missle launchers. And a drone control addon that allows you to use a few differently tiered drones:. An attack drone that fires a laser at the enemy ship. And a defence drone that defends your ship from missles.
And while that sounds like alot you won't be using most of it (Atleast in 2-3 playthroughs.) because you 1. Probably won't be able to buy it 2. You won't have space for it or 3. You won't be using it because it takes too much power that you need for other things and it's still going to be innaccurate regardless of how cool it looks/damage it does so it's honestly just pointless to buy/keep.

OVERALL RATING: 2/5 (I wasn't able to cover half of what I wanted to cover but in all honestly with a lack of content atleast when compaired to even other inde games which tend to have less content when compared to AAA games.)

For $9.99, FTL is realistically the best space rogue-like you'll probably ever play--doubly so if you pick it up on a sale. Sure, it's a bit unforgiving...er, a lot unforgiving.
You probably won't make it through your first time. Or your second. Or your one-hundreth, but you'll still keep coming back. You'll probably suffocate, be sold to slavery, crash, get invaded by giant spiders or just plain explode more often than you succeed, but if that one taste of success wasn't so delightfully addictive, then Dark Souls wouldn't be a thing, would it?
Aside from that, there's a charming soundtrack, pleasing visuals and a number of challenges, ships and customizations to keep you coming back even after you beat the Rebel Flagship your first time.

Everyone burned to death. Then everyone suffocated to death. Then, a few runs later, everyone was burned, suffocated, and blasted to death.

Giant spiders ate my crew, strange monoliths evaporated them, and asteroids turned them into fine, dehydrated powders drifting through the void.

Then I started getting better. I stayed away from the spiders, I vented the oxygen out of burning rooms, rather than sending a single hapless insectoid to fight the flames. And then, one glorious day, after so much blood, sweat, and tears, I destroyed the rebel flagship and won the game.

That was 40 hours in. There was still much to be done. This was before Advanced Edition came out, of course, so the unlock quests were the only ways to unlock all of the ships. And how long did it take me to obtain the Crystal Cruiser? 100 more hours.

That brings us to the present day, when I'm 450 hours in, and still banging out a game every week or two. And so, if you're still on the fence about buying FTL: Faster Than Light, ask yourself this: do you want a game that you'll play once and never touch again, or do you want a game that still has tons of replay-value after a frankly embarassing amount of time?

Personal Rating: Terrific but unforgiving Space Sim
Classic Rating: ★★★★☆

What makes FTL good for me?

✓ Spaaaace: this is a quite simple Space Simulator and yet it's features' rich.
✓ Great atmosphere, short game sessions and high replay value.
✓ Excellent Soundtrack, fits perfectly into gameplay.
✓ Cute graphics, even if it lacks a proper fullscreen/high res setting.

And then it's tough too because of:

✘ RNG, which can be so frustrating.
✘ Permadeath: True, you cannot save mid-game, you can only save and quit (to continue later).
✘ A lot of micromanagement involved: every choice is hard to make and you can get killed in so many ways, each time a different one.

I believe every one owns FTL already but if you don't yet, take advantage of the next sale and give it a go.

I died.

Then I got smart...

... and died again.

Then I got clever...

... and died again.

Then I got courageous...

... and died 12 more times.

Then I logged out...

... and died again.

Then I logged back in...

... and guess what happened?

I died again.

Best death simulation game ever created.

Oh and the roguelike is pretty cool too.

Stop reading and push the green 'add to cart' button.

If you don't. . . that means you want to live.

FTL has kept me interested for 66 hours already and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Every time you start a new game, the outcome is different and engaging. Although you follow the same general storyline in every play through, it still introduces new challenges and thought provoking events. You are constantly running into issues where you have to make hard moral decisions that will affect your progress in the game.

I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys happiness. 12/10

This game is extremely tough. I'm a AAA title, high end pc gamer, and this game is on my top 10 list. it may not look like GTA V or Crysis, but it's engaging, challenging, and addictive.

pick it up on sale for like 2 bucks, can't go wrong.
