I am a returning player who played LoTRO at time of launch and had many fun times playing with family and friends. I decided to start fresh with a new account and started leveling a couple toons. The game and lore are awesome, it has gone casual but for the amount of time I have to throw at a game like this being not so Mt. Dew extreme allow a more relaxing entertainment experience. If you just want a fun game to go PvP in or surf new content only then I would not recommend this game. However if you want a hint of old school MMO with a good community and not really interested in level hurdling to new content then this game is worth a play to at least level 30. I've seen a number of gripes about the cash shop, however you do not need to spend a ton of cash to have an entertaining experience with this game. It seems that way if you want totally free but I am not naive to think game developers live off good comments and troll hugs. I threw a few bucks at the steam DLC, picked up the 3 month sub for 30 bucks and having fun!

I brought like 20 friends to this game, we got a kingship, we have our own way of electing fellowship leaders which can lead us where they want, and its free (for the most part). Great game i give 9/10!

One of the oldest and best MMOs out there. If you love stories in games this is a good choice. It has 100s of hours of stuff to do. The recent server consolidation means the worlds feel much busier and server choice isn't as important as it used to be. The game also has one of the nicest communities I've seen in any game. The free to play model is a bit unusual, it's not exploitative in any way but I'd recommend VIP for at least a month.

Now on the bad side: the graphics are a bit dated now but the landscapes can still be stunning. Combat animations are slow, which makes combat feel a bit sluggish. The game is also far too easy when levelling up, but this is fixed at higher levels.

Overall I'd highly recommend it.

Pretty solid. Mostly played it because I'm a big LOTR fan. Not the best game ever, but interesting take on Middle-Earth and the story in general.

9/10

pros:
-most of all the game has a good sense of lore from the books.
-satisfying quests, similar to most mmos.
-interesting looting system.
-Amazing scenery, zone designs (shows the open world value in the game).
-The currency that can be bought with real money can also be aquired through doing "deeds" or exploring the world of lotro.

cons:
-subscription to f2p change in this game was pointless. Nearly every function in this game is locked to unsubbed (f2p members).
-You can run out of quests a lot forcing you to do power levelling.
-Alternatives to running out of quests is doing a different zone which can be unlocked only with using the real money currency.
-Repeatable lags on servers. I can only speak for one as I do not play on any other and that might be the case.

I have a real soft spot for this game. The quest plotlines are good, the soundtrack is beautiful, and the graphics aren't bad for an older mmo. My major criticisms are that the f2p is weak and pretty impossible at the later levels, and combat can be pretty repetitive. I feel that the game designers did a great job of referencing the LOTR books and movies in the landscaping and overall tone.

LOTRO reminds me WOW, but just the fact of being set in the fantastic world created by J. R. R. Tolkien is already an incentive to play it.This game is a fun (and FREE) MMO, so invite your friends andwelcome to the Middle-earth!

Still, after 9 years since game has been lounched it's one of the best mmorpg's ever made. Only the fact, game is still active, with still added content make this game such as unique as every mmo player need. I have played since closed beta, now i have over 1600 hours spent in this game (counted ingame time), my guild is still active after that much years after. Yes, only with a few elder members, but still ..
Graphics dont look like an high end title, but ye ... it still isn't trash. Much of key features fot times when game was new, like hobbies, great farming, nice crafting, exping of weapons, raising your own horse, housing for everyone not only for high lvl players. A lot of games after has tried to use these philosophies from lotro with theyr own little inovations.
It's the only mmorpg what i have still instaled, all these 9 long years and i'm still loging back. Not for long gaming sessions, I'm now 32 years old grandpa :D But for strong bond with this game, great sceneries, lovely soundtrack and a cup of nostalgia for sunday afternoons. I know, for today's young players is a lot of new games for chose from, with high end graphics etc. But in this game, you've got 9 years of ading quest with no "clicktobehighestlvl" like in wow = months of questing, months of collecting, months of making deeds, months of making your unique named and stated weapon, etc. Try it with your friends for the best experience. I will put my arm into Saurons fire if it will not be fun for you.

I played this game from open beta and loved it. After Mirkwood came out a few things in my life had me put LotRO on hold. I came back about 2 months ago and it feels like a different game. That being said, it's not a bad thing, just different from what I remember. Not dramatically different but enough to make it interesting. It is still one of the best MMOs I've ever played (going all the way back to Ultima Online before EA or whoever got a hold of it and ♥♥♥♥ed it all up).

The game follows the books pretty closely (and not the movies). So if you like Tolkien and are looking to get into a MMO, this is the right place for you. Even if you haven't read the books and just seen the Hobbit and Rings trilogies, there is enought in the game for you to say, "Ah, I remember that!"

The game is a little old but that doesnt take away from its charm. It being older means the the graphics are not all HD/3D/VR-esque but are not too bad in hindsight. The story and quests drive you to want to go to the next part of the game and leveling is not that bad. The quests make it interesting to the point that it doesn't feel like a constant grind. Not to say that there isn't a grinding element to it.....it is a MMO after all.

I'd give it a 9/10, just because I'm a fan of the books and they actually took the time to get it right.

So, I've been playing this game off and on for the last four and a half years, so I would say I've seen enough of it to write an hoenst review. What I love most about the game are the story and the immersion you feel when you're playing. You really feel like you're a part of the Middle Earth World, which to me means a lot (I'm obssessed with Lord of the Rings). The regions are varied enough that you feel like every place is different. Also, each class has its own unique characteristics that set it apart from the other classes; most people have multiple characters on multiple servors because they want to capitalize on all the different class options and play styles.

The main problems I have with LOTRO are that the combat is getting clunky, certain classes are way overpowered compared to others, and the questing in certain regions is getting a bit monotonous. The combat is generally the same the whole game, so it's important that you pick the class that goes with what you want in the game. It can just be very repetitive at times. Likewise, certain classes are way stronger than other classes. My hunter is so frail at level 89 compared to most other classes. So frail that it becomes difficult to get through basic solo quests. Finally, the quest are around the same thing over and over again. I know there can only be a finite number of quest ideas, but I would appreciate more diversity in questing.

Overall, I find myself coming back to this game every couple of months, getting bored, and then coming back again in a cycle. I've done this for four years now, and I expect to d othe same for at least a couple more years. 8.5/10
