Holy ♥♥♥♥! This game is huge! And by that I mean just the locations are huge. Weirdly the only thing I don't like is that every time you level up there is no way you can add skill points to your hero. It just auto scales. But barring that, the game itself is pretty absorbing. :)

Not many people play anymore, but still a good game. It has some paywalls, but it's entirely possible to get through those paywalls for free with some farming.

This has to be one of the worst MMOS I've ever played. The controls are clunky, the world is dead and doesn't encourage exploration (map areas are locked for too long and fast travelling doesn't work) the storyline is boring, cliched and vague, the leveling is broken, and the menus are confusing in this poor rendition of Middle Earth.
I don't have high expectations for MMOS, but this one is painful to play and I'm sure has Tolkien rolling around in his grave.
It may have been fun to play back when it was first released, but it is dry and uninspiring now.
That being said, it is fun to play if you feel like playing a terrible MMO with your friends for the kicks.

Terrible, even infuriating, customer service.

Despite this being a prime example of a good solid classic MMORPG.

Had a bad experience with a GM a couple years ago, arbitrarily changed my name from "Theodophilus" to some randomly generated name. Claimed it broke the rules and was too religious, despite Theod- being a very common name prefix in the LOTR universe. I questioned him about it, he refused to change it back, and even banned my account for three days because I pressed the issue. There is no recourse at all as a customer, WB is just too big to care, and Turbine (or whoever) have no real means set up of dealing with these problems, they had a suggestion box and ticket system, true, but it's /dev/null, never got so much as a form letter response from those venues. Once a year I call up WB and asked if they've changed the name back for free, or taken any action to rectify or make amends for my terrible customer service experience. They sympathetically tell me nothing can be done on the phone, and I tell them that I enjoyed the game itself and would have possibly been spending money on it, and they have now lost $X amount more dollars in the past year I may have spent, because at the time of the occurrence I happily a subscriber--This was after the game went f2p, I figured I liked it, I spent time on it, I would support it.

The GMs have no oversight, and can pretty much do whatever they want without repercussions. If you do gamble on this game, I would encourage you to spend no money on it, so the only thing you will lose if you encounter a rogue GM is your time.

GM abuse shatters the illusion within an MMO that what you do within it has any meaning or permanency whatsoever, someone can just come along and spitefully fiddle with your entry in the database, what's the point? The suspension of disbelief was shattered, and this was reinforced by the abject lack of customer care or public relations.

While the game is a fine example of a classic MMORPG, unfortunately so is the customer service, from a bygone era when gaming was a less competitive market, a higher ratio of gamers were children, and the novelty of being in an MMORPG at all may have been enough to get some kid to tolerate the unpoliced abuse by a GM. This isn't the past, I'm not a kid, and they have lost a lot of money from me. Always vote with your wallet, it's one of the few things that really matter in this world, unfortunately.

Nothing preciousssSSssss here, just a database some guy can drunk dial on a whim.

As a 7 year veteran of this game that has purchased every expansion/class/zone I cannot in good faith recommend this game anymore, Turbine have no idea what they are doing at this point and are obviously suffering from lack of staff and have been since Riders of Rohan launched.

Turbine apparently decided a game wide nerf was in order because content was too easy, huge sweeping changes like this couldn't possibly affect anything right? NPC's in escort missions were hit by this nerf and in turn had their HP lowered to an absolutely rediculous amount causing some key story missions to be almost impossible until completely outleveling them (96 to do a level 87 required mission) requiring you to completely bypass doing the games main story (the key reason I enjoy it and play it) and do sidequests until you are able to go back and play catch up. If you managed to complete this story before the game wide nerf you were fine. This is insanely unacceptable to require the player to be almost a full 10+ levels higher to complete in order to finish the quest.

Also of note is the absolutely abysmal or almost complete lack of optimization in the recent expansions. To put this in perspective I have trouble maintaining 15 FPS on ultra in areas with a fairly decent rig (R9 390X, i7 4790k, 32g DDR3). This game was released in 2007. I have no trouble maintaining 100+ FPS in Final Fantasy XIV on max settings. The game functions atrociously on anything above a dual core cpu and it shows. Mounted combat has been laggy and suffers from rubber banding regardless of connection since it was implemented in 2012 with no improvements, something that was touted as a main mechanic and the entire expansion was centered around. The game also suffers from extreme hitching regardless of settings/zone in every expansion past Riders of Rohan due to the way the engine is structured and reads files from an HDD, this is not fixed using an SSD or flash drive as the devs suggest in the forums.

This is completely depressing as this is easily in my top 3 MMO's I've played. I love the community and the setting for this game; I have genuinely never met nicer people in an MMO than I have in this. I enjoyed being able to create my own character and explore an absolutely gorgeous world and I really enjoyed seeing an expanded form of the LOTR universe and being a part of new stories told in it.

Maybe by some amazing stroke of luck the game can magically obtain a development team that is substantial enough and experienced enough to fix the problems with the game and restore it to the game I once enjoyed spending my time in, but until then the game is on life support and future updates will likely not fix the issues the game currently has.

The developers of the game screwed it up so bad that they are litterally just rushing new content as fast as they can to move on to another game. Before they overhauled the entire class system it was an amazing game, after.... not so much.
