I'm not really a fan of this game, for the game itself, but the roleplaying community is better here than on any other MMORPG that I have found. Smaller, but that means you get to know everybody. I recommend it for peopel who want to RP, but if you're looking for a game that'll be fun to level and do engame stuff, or PvP, I would look elsewhere.

I havent even played the game, and i instantly dislike it.Why?because even the installation is broken.Every solution that i found turned out to be useless. It keeps looping over and over again, wasting all my internet quota.Until the problem is fixed,i wont recommend the game.

On Steam i only have some 200h but that because i only recently downloaded it on steam. In truth ive been playing this game for over 6 years. I recommend this game to everyone, may not have the most amazing graphics in comparison to some of the new games that came out, but its story line, and huge map is amazing 10/10.

Graphics:
The people that are saying this game is dated or doesn't look good are playing on medium. Especially if you are able to take advantage of DSR or other similar technologies and run on high to ultra-high, this game still looks AMAZING! Just be patient and tinker with it.
Gameplay:
Combat mechanics won't blow you away, but that's not what traditional MMO's are for anyway. HOWEVER, the way each class plays is VERY unique and interesting if you take the time to learn them, thus making the combat feel less clunky than it probably is.
Leveling:
Questing is similar to the snatch and grab MMO model; however, a good bit of story and random traveling is incorporated as well (in a good way) to allow you to explore a bit and familiarize you with what is happening around you, story-wise. You are eligible for instanced content at level 10 but don't expect to jump right into a group instance because it won't happen, the low levels are populated but you level so quickly most people don't even think about instances until they are eligible for skirmishes (skirmishes are so ♥♥♥♥)
End-game Content:
There is plenty to do at end-game; however, like any other MMO, it will take you some time to coordinate and find a group for any serious content completion, BUT the potential to do so is definitely there.
Community:
Best of any MMO I've ever seen, players are constantly offering up items for free to newer players, quick to hand out advice, and most of them, excited to help you on your journey throughout middle earth.

TL;DR -- DO NOT let the bad reviews prevent you from downloading this game. If you are TRULY a fan of traditional-style MMO's (think WoW) you will most definitely enjoy yourself. The players complaining about things being "slow", "dated" or "clunky" merely do not know how to configure their settings for the game to run properly on their system.

LOTRO reminds me WOW, but just the fact of being set in the fantastic world created by J. R. R. Tolkien is already an incentive to play it.This game is a fun (and FREE) MMO, so invite your friends andwelcome to the Middle-earth!

I played this game from open beta and loved it. After Mirkwood came out a few things in my life had me put LotRO on hold. I came back about 2 months ago and it feels like a different game. That being said, it's not a bad thing, just different from what I remember. Not dramatically different but enough to make it interesting. It is still one of the best MMOs I've ever played (going all the way back to Ultima Online before EA or whoever got a hold of it and ♥♥♥♥ed it all up).

The game follows the books pretty closely (and not the movies). So if you like Tolkien and are looking to get into a MMO, this is the right place for you. Even if you haven't read the books and just seen the Hobbit and Rings trilogies, there is enought in the game for you to say, "Ah, I remember that!"

The game is a little old but that doesnt take away from its charm. It being older means the the graphics are not all HD/3D/VR-esque but are not too bad in hindsight. The story and quests drive you to want to go to the next part of the game and leveling is not that bad. The quests make it interesting to the point that it doesn't feel like a constant grind. Not to say that there isn't a grinding element to it.....it is a MMO after all.

I'd give it a 9/10, just because I'm a fan of the books and they actually took the time to get it right.

Great story driven MMORPG that is very immersive. Also one of the very few MMOs that does Bards / Minstrels right.

The level scaling instances are amazing. Love leveling via skirmishes.

Needs more Aussie players on Crickhollow!

One of the oldest and best MMOs out there. If you love stories in games this is a good choice. It has 100s of hours of stuff to do. The recent server consolidation means the worlds feel much busier and server choice isn't as important as it used to be. The game also has one of the nicest communities I've seen in any game. The free to play model is a bit unusual, it's not exploitative in any way but I'd recommend VIP for at least a month.

Now on the bad side: the graphics are a bit dated now but the landscapes can still be stunning. Combat animations are slow, which makes combat feel a bit sluggish. The game is also far too easy when levelling up, but this is fixed at higher levels.

Overall I'd highly recommend it.
