I am sure the game would be fine if it didn't error out and crash every time I try to launch it. Never did get to play it, I verified which is usually a trusty option and all of my drivers are up to date, but to no avail.

Make that a thumb sideways.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a mix of Mario Kart-like randomness and chaos, and Trackmania-like skill-based precision racing, and then some more.

So it is a game with several very different game-modes and race types, in singleplayer you'll go through all of them, wether you like them all or not. How much fun you will have depends on what kind of preferences of racing game types you have, and I'll try to point out those things in this review.

First off, if you're a completionist, going for 100% achievements or as close to that as possible, this game is quite ok into the 70-80% region, and then it becomes difficult, even frustrating, and a game of chance much more than a game of skill. That's a very clear thumbs down from this perspective. Most people don't care about that but I wanted to mention it for those who do.

If you're a fan of fun racers with random weapon pickups, this game has alot of that, in singleplayer aswell as multiplayer.
The randomness is really really prominent in singleplayer races against AI. No matter how good you are, winning in the hardest ("expert", unlockable) and second-to-hardest difficulty modes is very difficult mostly, and when you win, you don't have the feeling that you did that, but you just got lucky with the pickups and the enemy AI's rubberband mechanism. Someone might be out there who does enjoy that kind of racing, but I didn't. As mentioned, it's the central part of the game.

If you're a fan of driving skill based racing with no element of randomness, this game has some of that, too, and I happen to like those parts. The higher difficulties are a challenge, but it's how well you race that makes the difference, and there's a clear sense of progress and improvement with each retry. You memorize the courses, you spot shortcuts, get a feel for the physics model (unrealistic but that's ok) and the different unlockable drivers that handle differently, and most importantly you learn how to get "boosts" by performing slides around corners and stunts during jumps. So you have to keep an eye out for opportunities to do that, and pull it off with some skill and precision. I enjoyed these kinds of races the most. They come in different variations and make up about 1/3rd of the singleplayer game. Those variations are racing against the clock/against a pre-recorded non-random ghost, racing against AI but without weapons, drift challenges, boost challenges, and ring races in air levels.

There are sections in the levels (with varying extent per level) of air and boat racing, that handle quite a bit differently. The air controls are a disaster, imho. The slower you are, the faster you turn, which is ok on paper, but it makes handling steep curves extremely imprecise and frustrating, especially when the curve is not only left/right, but at the same time upwards/downwards. They should have looked at the 15 year old Pilotwings 64 to get an idea of how to design good, uncomplicated but precise controls for such a game mode.

The great downside to the game as a whole is, that, unless you happen to like all of these different kinds of racing, you'll hate some parts of the game. Due to how the singleplayer progression is designed, you can't really ignore those parts, if you want to progress through the game.

Meh, bought this to play with a friend who came over, and we played, but found the controls responsive than we would have wanted. Mario kart is a better option.

Controller rumbles with game, but cannot control game. Have to set aspect ratio in config file otherwise, play in windowed mode in top right screen despite being in full screen mode. Have to play in windows 8 compatibility mode or else it is just a white box simulator. 10/10 best port good effort.

This game is worst piece of ♥♥♥♥ ever created. You may say this game is challenging. I say that only challenge in this game is the mentally challengedness of the developer.

A rank races are literally impossible to win. You can have a perfect run and still at the last straight a computer player overtakes you with invulnerability on.

Whoever designed this piece of crap is a ♥♥♥♥ing idiot and should resign from games industry forever. The world will be better for it.

Before you decide to buy this game ask yourself these questions:
- Do you want to play mario kart on your PC?
- Do you love crash team racing?
- Do you enjoy goofy race?
- Do you want to race multiplayer locally to have some fun with friends?
- Do you like Sonic?

----Then Buy it----
But remember........

THOSE AI WILL DEFINITELY KICK YOUR ♥♥♥ THOOO!!!
- Their cars accelerate faster than yours
- They will always target you NO MATTER WHAT
- Near perfect driving troughout the race
- The Possibility of them getting allstars is much higher than yours

And you think that getting gold medal in Gran Turismo is hard? Try the hardest difficulty and we'll see

This is the dark souls for kart racing guys, but still a very great and polished game 8.5/10

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, in case you can't tell from the title, is a racing game, and the sequel to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. In this game your car transforms into a plane or boat depending on what the course calls for at certain points. As you play the game you earn experience points, and when you level up, you earn a new mod for that character. Mods are changes to how your character's vehicle handles. Because you have to level up each character individually to unlock all the mods for all the characters, it can either be something that adds replay value for you, or be an unfun grind. Aside from the usual grand prix and versus modes, there is a quest mode as well, where you complete challenges to earn stars that allow you to unlock more characters, mods for characters, and of course more challenges. Some of these challenges can be really difficult at times, and to top it off there's also an extra difficulty to unlock that makes these challenges even harder. While the game doesn't have as many power ups or courses to choose from as Mario Kart games have nowadays, the gameplay is solid, and the courses often have multiple paths you can take that act as shortcuts. So far in these Sega All Stars games, I think this one has the best fan service. It's also the best looking and best sounding game in the series. This game is available for multiple platforms, but I recommend getting it on Steam assuming you have the specs to run it, since the Steam version has more exclusive characters than any other version, including an exclusive DLC character.

Sumo Digital did an amazing job with this game. Everything from the characters they brought, the tracks, the transformations, the PC exclusive characters, the optimization, it's unreal. It's literally a SEGA paradise.

Even if you're not a fan of racing games, you'll REALLY love this especially if you're a huge SEGA junkie. The racing mechanics and soundtrack hook you in and want you to keep on playing. There's lots of replayability. Grand Prix, Missions, Time Trials, Online racing, Battle Mode, and much more.

My only problem is the the way the cars control and the launcher which is the only way to change controls and graphic options, but again. Minor complaints.

It's totally worth getting. Did I mention we have the best version of the game?
