This is my first time using mabinogi with steam but i have been a player on mabi since the CB back in 2008. It's progress was ruff and as a result the community declined. However, the spirit of mabinogi is still present in the people that play so find friends and a resolve wont be an issue. I would recommend this game to anyone that has a passion for fantasy life and the adventures that come with it. Log on, choose your weapon and fight for Erinn!

Unique MMO, P2W, and small communities. Would recommend to someone who has a group of friends to play with or someone willing to meet people in-game.

Unique - imo has the best combat system out of any MMO i've tried.
- FASHION
P2W - You can buy items using nx (Karma Koin), these items include Gachapons (chance at rare items, gambling), and character mounts.

Communities - There's a low amount of people on each channel so you'll be seeing the same people/groups often.

I have been playing this game, on and off Steam, for almost a decade. I go through phases on the game where I may just log on for socializing and fashion or for the music skills and such; yet sometimes I am a hardcore dungeon crawler. (Shadow Missions are more fun in my opinion, just saying.) The devs put on great events with good timing between. The summer events are always the best, of course. It can seem like a free2play/pay2win type game when first starting out. And yes, there are many helpful items, as well as frivolous ones, that can be purchased with real-life money; however, as I discovered myself, it is not necessary if the player is dedicated and patient. The devs give plenty of opportunities to gain great items in game as well. I could continue listing lots of positives, but I need to get back to my chores. So...

As for the negatives: Really only two things that I am constantly annoyed with enough to mention them. One is the fact that, being an mmorpg, I must find a way to (virtually) co-exist with players from lands near and far. Which means dealing with a wide variety of personalities, morals, and norms. (Kinda like middle school or high school). As far as game play is concerned, I am constantly grumbling about awkward camera angles in some areas of the maps. But that is not a dealbreaker in any way. :D

I have over 2000 hours on to this game without steam.

This is a great game but the way to make it really fun is to have a set of goals.

Join a guild, make lots of friends to make your adventure a lot more exciting.

There is no level cap.

Playing Mabinogi is one thing I'll never regret. The memories I've made playing with friends I made will probably be some of the most long lasting. Honestly the community made the game for me. Playing Mabinogi solo will definetly start to get boring after a while, as most of the solo content is a grind fest other than the Saga. So I would definetly recommend trying to reach out and make friends to play with.

Other than the community, the game was alright. The fighting style is unique and different than most MMOs out there.
Plus there's a lot of space to move around in as they give you opportunities to "Rebirth" which allows you to change your class or proffession and restart yourself to lvl 1 while keeping all of your previous stats. But I would highly recommend sticking with a combat class to start with in the beginning as it's always nice to have a a certain class that you can lean on.

Another thing that I liked about this game is that the devs keep a constant amount of events to do every now and then to help keep you entertained. They also interact with their player base occasionally getting on, or through events where you can spend time with them. And if you ever so wish, you could also stalk them on twitter if that's your thing. But the devs in Mabinogi are probably the most interactive I've ever seen in an MMO. They also have interactive NPCs which I find pretty interesting.

All in all my experiance with Mabinogi was mostly postive. Reading some of the reviews from old time players, seeing them leave is honestly a bit sad as it's thanks to them that we newer players are able to experience the best out of this game as some of them spent their time putting a whole bunch of info on a Wiki for us, so if you decide to play I'd definetly recommend you check it out. Mabinogi might not ever be as it once was for them, as their expectations may have been shot down, but for new casual players, I don't think it should be much of a problem.

A game ive played since release, i've been in a love/hate relationship with it but so far the only mmo i care to go back to playing due to its apparently rare combat system that relies mostly on the players skill and sometimes a decent connection.

Mabinogi is a game based off of the Celtic myths called Mabinogions. I don't know much about celtic mythology, but the game's icon is based off the celtic knot. The game is made by Koreans who are well-versed in the art of coding crack cocaine into video game form. You look like an anime character from the PS2 era, doing mundane tasks to rank up how well you can sheer a sheep, or mix strawberry milk.

Onto the gameplay,
This game has no excuse to run at 15 fps at some places, being from the 2000s. If you can get past the horrible engine this game forces you to play on, you're in for some not very exciting gameplay. The game is based off of a rock-paper-scissor type combat (at least for the basic combat skills, this starts to matter less once you get more specialized skills) which would work well if the game didn't lag to ♥♥♥♥ing oblivion.

I forgot to mention the lag. Depending on the day you play, time of day, position of the sun and moon, and if your oven's clock is synced to your microwave's clock, the game can lag terribly to unplayable.

After 6 days (everyday if you are under a total level of 1000), you can rebirth and reset to level 1, but keep the progress you have made on any skills you were ranking up. This is a core aspect of the game. Optionally, you can use rebirth potions that you can buy with real life money (NX) to rebirth anytime. Eventually, you'll be level 80 after one day and have a whole 5 days to wait, wondering what the hell to do now. The game tries to keep you playing everyday with events, and opportunities to give you more ability points (what you use to rank up skills, these run out very fast).

The community is absolutely awful, since it mainly attracts weeaboos, middle schoolers, weeaboo middle schoolers, edgy middle schoolers, edgy high schoolers, people from Gaia online, and actual adults who spend way too much money on a Japanese anime life simulator. All of the above will try to prove how much better than you they are by using the classic "my damage is higher than yours" reason. Although this doesn't really change the fact that you are both playing a Chinese timesink.

One thing I do like about this game is it's NPC art. Not the graphics themselves, but the little portraits that appear when you talk to NPCs. Also there's cute waifus which is VERY nice. The music is ok, some pieces are actually pretty good. But one of the things that attracted me to this game originally was the fact that there are musical instruments in the game, and you can compose songs using MML (Music Macro Language). Eventually, everyone just ends up playing Naruto openings, Bleach openings, Mario, Pirates of the Caribbean, Zelda, Skyrim, Carameldansen, Power Rangers, and other songs you've heard to death.

The skill ranking system goes from rank F - A, then from 9 - 1. Getting some skills to from rank F to rank 1 can take either a day, or a few months. You spend AP, or ability points, to rank up these skills. Some skills will take about 60 AP to get from rank 2 to rank 1, and that's not including all the other ranks before that. The main reason for rebirths is to get more AP for your skills, which to why you keep coming back to this Taiwanese basketweaving tutorial.

The quests are ok, I guess.

This game is ok, I guess. Play it if you have a few hundred-thousand hours to waste. It's easier with friends.

Mabinogi and how I feel about it
After Spending around 900 hours in this game, I do believe it's time I make a review for Mabinogi.

In short, mabinogi is a Open World, Fantasy Life MMO, You're free to do literally anything you want too, you can run around and explore dungeons or you can take up smithing and make weaponry, or you could take up tailoring or carpentry instead, you can even play music to help buff your team mates in what they're doing.

Honestly, I've put a lot of time into Mabinogi because I fell in love with it's charm and how it plays, it's not super fancy, it doesn't have the top notch graphics that most MMOs have nowadays but it has so much more to offer outside of it's looks that it just blows other MMOs out of the water.

With that said, there are quite a few Cons for Mabinogi too, forinstance the lack of support for people who are on newer system and the extreme amount of stuff to wrap your head around, it's very overwhelming, it's not really as popular as a lot of other MMOs either, which to me is honestly a good thing because that means most people on there are just as deticated on there as you and are usually willing to help a friend out, it's also just not built as well as most other games either.

But overall, I'd recomend this game to anyone who is looking for a fun time in a vast open world~
and if you need someone to help you out, gimme a call :P

Like most of the reviews here. I am one of those who played before Mabinogi entered steam, and just as what others mention, this game really is one of a kind. I'd be tragic if Mabinogi ever died.
I don't remember the exact year when I started playing, but there only used to be three or four classes you could pick, being the typical around MMOs, Mage, Melee, and the Archer classes.

The community, I also found to be as good as family. Like most others, I also wish we could still be in contact, because of how such an amazing time we had merely just socializing. The best part is, that you can actually start a family by getting married and adopt others. "Living the fantasy life" just as they say.
Being unique is also a very major thing they worked well on. Having the exact same clothes, with the exact same colour, is even more rear to find than in real life. But I happen to be lucky enough to get the majority of my clothes that I buy at the time to be themed Yellow and White, giving my own signiture no matter how much time passes.
The major parts in customization would be the absurd amount of clothes they have available to sell. While some are very high price, nice clothes can still be bought at a decent or rather generous price for their beautiful, impressive, or complex design.

While I can understand the complexity it takes to upgrade the graphics and having to almost completely rebuild the game to impove the travel and combat system, as well as the general animations for the envioment interaction. I find the lacking of these improvements really bothered me, even when I continued to play frequently, or when I return every couple of times. It really annoyed me when I get stuck in complex or tight spaces, like in small stores, or between trees, when chopping for some wood, and having to click a lot to get out. I like how the designs are improving, but because of the old age of the game with it's unimproved flaws, it really sets me back on how much more I can actually enjoy it. But I guess that makes it classic.

Still to this day, the combat system is a bit lacking, but it's very unique, being able to approach combat with different tactics and styles. Especially over time when they began to implement much more unique ways for combat that are not found in many other MMOs.
The thing I love the most about the combat system, is that you don't have to stick to your class all the time and could use a mix of skills, hybridizing any skills you decide to build on your character, beaing able to master all classes and obtaining hybrid titles to prove your skills.
There are times when people mention how bad I am at building my skills, especially when contributing to melee even though I'm an elf. At first combat was really hard for me, being an elf was really being like a glass cannon, having impressive magical and archery power, but heavily lacks on the armour and defence department.
Until you manage to get stronger, then even an elf, with just light armour on, could withstand just as much as humans and giants can.
But as a hybrid, I looked for more ways to withstand damage, the exciting part, is that I can actually do that. My most happiest momment is when I obtained the Mana Shield skill. Able to withstand all sorts of attacks, but the weaker the skill, the heavier burden it is to your mana pool.

Later on, with the release of a dedicated music skill set, with the already ability to write your own songs, they included skills you could use to support your team directly by improving their abilities in combat and non-combat situations, much more instruments and the ability to fight with them. Being a big musical fan at the time, I loved the update and used my instument for every close combat situation, expressing how much I love music.

At first I got into alchemey and tried to master the golem, but as it was high maintence and quite costly for long term adventuring, I dropped it for more simpler skills, but I still figured ways to reduce direct combat for my elf. Such as obtaining and training a pet. They helped me a lot in a varity of situations, such as holding my things, saving me from a group of monsters, or healing me and my party. But even when they are strong, they were not as efficent as fighting directly.
Then after a while more classes arrived in Mabinogi. The most unique and game changing for me, was the marionettes. As an elf with a weak body and the massive difference in the marionette combat style, I absolutely loved this update more than anything else and I still look back in all my adventures with my pierrot marionette when ever I think of Mabinogi.
The biggest difference in this combat style was when you equip the control rods, you could still use them like regular weapons and includes three skills you could use to bind and pull your enemies with, but the main role is to control your marionette, which you had to summon with no cost, other than actually taking care of it, had a ridiculous amount of health and defence conpairable to some or most boss grade enemies, and the combat, had their own unique damage, which mean't any enemy with any resistances will not be able to mitigate a marionette's attacks. They are also one of the few classes which has skills that can directly break through the defence skill and able to combat multiple opponents with a very large attack range. Also the stats required for marionettes are majored for Strength and Dexterity, which gave versitility for both melee, archery, and life skill majors, letting any race to be reletivly equal in terms of mastering the marionette. Using the marionette skills require stamina, but quite little compaired to most other stamina required classes, allowing for much longer combat with little worry of overspending your stamina and having to carry extra potions.

There is little negitives I have for the marionette, other than being quite slow, which gives long range enemies opprotinities to attack it, but can be overcome by walking up to them yourself and using act 1 or attacking directly. Also it has incomplete skills, or "acts" having little combat varity but it does have a very high flexability for all sorts of enemies, dispite only having six marionette skills.

All in all, I would like Mabinogi to be improved even if they have to rebuild Mabinogi, but I really would like them to keep all their content, and unique apporach to the MMO world. All the've built, really attracted and kept many people loyal to the game for a longer life span than most other MMOs.
Back then when I saw them advertise with "Live a fantasy life." I thought "What a joke!" but when I look back, it was a life totally worth living. But now that many people I know are gone, it feels really lonely. To me, making new friends got a lot harder than before. But there still are some really good people out there.

This game is a gem from the past, It is outdated but still shows much improvement. The leveling is nearly infinite and allows you to play how ever you want with no class restriction. If you can work the economy you can get to end game without spending a dime. I would recomend trying to get to level 200 before you give up on the game entirely, it would take you a week at least to accomplish.

Mabinogi was great between g1~12, after that it all went downhill with "revamped" combat, reforges, special upgrades, and free stats from talents.
At this point its just a messanger program or a style simulator.
Forgot to mention its a pay to win game now.

I definitly enjoy this game. Especially considering it's free. It's not heavily pay to win, but if you do choose to spend money it will likely be on pets. I have yet to do so, but I'm sure at some point there will be something I desire. The community isn't too bad, most just keep to themselves other than for dungeons or selling items. Only a handful of terrifying Weeaboos have cursed me out, but that's with any game.

If someone tells you "It's made my nexon, it's bad" take it with a grain of salt, Dev Cat has held a stead grip on making it fair while still making money.

Also, buy an instrument, make a custom scroll with random notes on mml, and go to channel 2 Belvast. You'll be everyone's friend. The higher pitched the better. Flutes work well.

Its not about game play, its not about game mechanics, its not about graphics, but ill tell you one thing, this game has an astounding community where you'll meet friends you know for years to come, a community where when you need help on something multiple people will show up to aid, a community where you make more than just friends, you make a family! That is the reason that i play this game, friends and a community that you know you can rely on.
