Prepare to have your scrotum twisted as you shoot your weak pea-shooter as the enemies shoot you with the sniper rifles and LMGs they rented.

Yes, rented.
Unless you pay a lot extra to have it forever, you're renting.

Let me start off by saying I first started playing Combat Arms back in 2009 AFTER it came out of beta. The game had some really major issues with things that people still complain about today, namely hacking and NX. I also don't really like writing reviews, but with how long I have played Combat Arms, I think it deserves the time I will spend typing this.
I see the majority of these reviews claiming the game is filled with hackers and/or the game is pay-to-win, I currently disagree with both of these points.

EDIT: So I made a new account and checked out the beginner server. It's bad. Like seriously really bad. It seems like the majority of games there have people hacking. If you're just starting I really recommend trying the Free For All server (if there are ever any games there) or the Rec Rules server. It'll be a bit tough with people having played longer and having better gear, but it's much better than dealing with the hacks in the beginner server.

I'm sure there are a few hackers, particularly in the low rank servers, but it is nowhere near what these reviews make it sound like, and it's definitely much better than when I started playing. That said, someone pointed out that there have been fluctuations in the amount of hackers, and I can agree with that as that is the reason I quit a few years ago. However, almost any multiplayer game will experience this as hack protection is cracked and updated, but right now hacking has dropped significantly in my opinion. I can't speak for what it's like in the beginner server, and I'm guessing that's what most reviews are speaking of.
Onto the second point, the game certainly used to have an issue with feeling like it was pay-to-win. NX (paid currency) can be used to get some very useful items I suppose, but most things can be bought with GP (in-game currency) as well, and it's not difficult to earn. The rental system isn't as bad as it's made out to be (the fact that you can only rent for one day is an annoyance at most, but in no way ruins the game). Not only that, but they now have a weekly weapon rotation; each week a different set of weapons is provided to all players until the next set arrives.

The Good.

The guns/equipment.
Holy crap. If you can't find something you like in Combat Arm's MASSIVE catalogue of weapons, you shouldn't be playing a shooter. On top of the usual listing of weapons, you can craft more using things such as replica palettes, Nexon often gives out event specific gear such as adorable reindeer backpacks, and they add more and more on a pretty regular basis. On top of weapons, you get backpacks, hats/helmets, goggles/glasses/masks, vests, and the choice of camouflage. Don't like that? Then there are mercenaries you can rent or buy to use. There are specialists who get access to things like claymores and airstrikes (if you can find a room that allows their use), and assassins who have a crossbow.

The maps.
Same point as gear, there is a significant amount of maps, and you're bound to discover one that you'll become fond of.

The modes.
Combat arms doesn't really have any unique modes, but the ones it has are well made. It has the basic modes you expect to see, such as Elimination, Free for All, Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy, etc.
Fireteam puts you up against bots, either completing objectives while fighting terrorists or an evil corporation (they have mechs on one map!), or fending of waves of zombies.
Quarantine pits players against player controlled zombies. Spy Hunt has one player become the super spy (more health, a minigun, a rocket launcher) attempting to upload information while being, surprise, hunted by the rest of the players.

The Bad.

The majority of the community.
This is a huge turn off in a game like Combat Arms. Accusations fly during matches, insults spew from players of all ranks, and the worst part is how often it happens. The majority of rooms will have rules against certain weapons (while allowing people to do questionable things, e.g. crouch spamming), and many elite moderators will simply kick someone if they don't like them. I wouldn't, however, trust rooms without elite moderators as that is where you would most likely find glitchers, hackers, or other unsavory characters.

The glitches.
Head peeking and crouch spamming and so on. The worst "glitches" are unfortunately looking to be the hardest to stop. You'll often find people with the tiniest sliver of their head poking from behind objects, yet they can clearly see you. Crouch spamming is awful. It's more annoying than the extreme instances of peeking. You'll find out that it becomes very difficult to hit people who are efficient at it, and most will claim it's a skillful tactic. There have been similar issues before these, and they have been dealt with.

It's something that is almost always broken (People used to complain about the G36, and now it's Max's set). With how many guns/equipment there is in this game, it's unsurprising. However, Nexon certainly seems to take their time addressing some of these concerns.

The support.
Nexon isn't quite as evil as people make them out to be, but with millions of players support is going to take time (I got a response to a ticket that was nearly a year old sometime last year). Don't expect quick solutions if you send in a ticket, I would recommend using the forums and getting support from other players instead.

The servers.
Oh, the servers. Sometimes it can take a few minutes to connect. This causes issues with inboxes and other menus; my inventory was slowed down to the point that I was getting errors about equipping and unequipping. Sometimes the servers break. Nexon has been saying they've been DDoS'ed recently, and maybe it's true, but it doesn't change the fact that during peak hours the servers nearly come to a full stop they are so slow.

The Ugly?

The graphics.
While they aren't bad, they aren't exactly "modern" and anyone who has an issue with this is stupid and should get over it. Joking. Personally, I only have a laptop currently since my PC died, so Combat Arms is one of the few things I can run without issue.

The events.
The events are great. Nexon always has really fun and worthwhile events, but they almost always cause server issues because of the high population that comes with, e.g., giving out free permanent guns. The server issue is so bad, that I just can't say the events are a quality of the game that makes it worth playing.

The community.
Yes, I listed them under the bad points as well, and for the majority I would say they are a bad point (enough so to warrant quitting and never coming back to the game). There are, however, a lot of really fun people who play this game and it's not hard to find people who you will quickly get along with. Unfortunately, I didn't feel there were actually enough nice people to list the community under "good" as well.

So, do I recommend the game? In general, I would say yes. It's a free game, put some time into it; try out different modes, maps, and gear; and seriously, try to get some friends to join you, it will partially make up for the somewhat toxic community (especially early on when you won't have met as many people).
If you want some eye candy or a game that is unique, I wouldn't recommend Combat Arms. As I already said, the game is originally from 2009 (or 2008 if you want to count the betas) and it's a fairly generic multiplayer shooter. Combat Arms real strength is in the amount of stuff in the game, and it's something Nexon often flaunts in trailers.

Thank you if you read this far, I realize I typed up quite a bit of information here, but I felt like the other reviews were very harsh and somewhat exaggerated, and that I could hopefully provide a recommendation that was sensible.

(Short version)
Play this game only with your friends, or if you're willing to spend a lot of cash.

(Background info)
I've played Combat Arms since 2010, and it was my first foray into the world of first person shooters. 4 years later, with Call of Duty, Battlefield and CounterStrike under my belt, I revisit Combat Arms from time to time after I quit playing regularly after mid-2011.

Why did I quit? Pay-to-win, hackers, kinda substandard anti-cheat, and rage-kickers.

(Actual review)
In theory, Combat Arms is a really, really fun game. The standard gamemodes are there, and they're pretty solid. I'm talking Team Deathmatch, Free-for-all, capture the flag etc. Then you have the multitude of co-op gamemodes that can easily suck out all of your free time, like the zombie game modes. But note the words "in theory".

In reality, the overpowered nature of paid guns and even the ability to be a match "moderator" gives this game a huge potential to be abused. You can literally buy your way into having your character take four times as many hits, heal yourself (game has no auto-regen), hold a minigun and a sniper rifle concurrently... you get the idea. Admittedly, this will cost more than your average Call of Duty season pass, but the fact that it's possible to get this sort of stuff if you have the money is ridiculous. In your everyday pub match however, expect to see at least 2 or 3 players with paid overpowered guns around in a full match.

You can buy "elite moderator" status, which will allow you to kick any player you don't like from the game. I don't think I need to elaborate on this.

The hackers. Combat Arms has a high concentration of them, probably due to the fact it's free and hackers have nothing to lose. The anti-cheat system isn't that great, so you'll see hackers around often enough to seriously annoy you.

My personal recommendation of the game is a double edged sword. Unfortunately, I will be giving a Not Recommended to this game, as the average player will not find a decent experience here. However, Combat Arms is a really fun game if you play with your real life friends in private matches, as it's essentially a more laid back version of CounterStrike with zombies every now and then.

If you still insist on trying to play this game in the long term in the pub matches, expect to spend some cash for a decent experience.

29 hours on steam, 200+ hr pre steam. first played feb 2009. its not what it used to be. i has become pay to win. nothing is balanced, if you have money to buy perm weapons and gear, you might have fun. if not, then you better like grinding and be ok with a trash kdr, you will not be doing well with defualts. dispite alot of maintenance and updates constanly being flung at this game, hacking is still rampant, while many modes have become unused because of broken power levels on guns and unstoppable specs. all in all this game was good and genuinly fun but then it became about the money.

I played this game years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit but after a while the game got worse. Hackers started taking over and of course if you were skilled at all whiny little kids who you kill try to vote kick you every few minutes. I left after so much frustration as Nexon seems not to care about the hackers.

After a few years when Combat Arms is back on steam I tried it once again hoping it will be better. I tried a few game modes and I cannot believe it. The game got worse! Hackers once again filled the servers eliminating any enjoyment of the game. Not to mention that half of the time the server lags out. And of course whiny kids kept accusing me of being a hacker because I killed them once. Nothing has changed and this game is virtually unplayable. Not to mention that it is pay to win. If you waste your money on this game you get unfair advantage of weapons and other stuff to easily kill the players that are smart enough not to spend money. Uninstall this crap and never touch it again.

Final score 1/10

From 2 years of experience
I played this game and honestly it not worth it. I started playing this game in 2010 and stopped playing for 2 years, then I went back to get it another try and nothing changed....sadly.. the graphics remain the same. all they do is "update" the UI in the game. The communities in the game has are rude, people offending each other, the host kicking people for random reasons, hardly any support for this game and most of all, THIS GAME IS HACKED!

The amount of hacker in the game is horrible. Nexon always said that they will remove the hackers and push out patches, it hardly fixes the problem.

I gave it one last chance in 2014 and once again nothing changed.....

So in the end, the "play game are clicks away, the choice is yours.

After a profitable hour of the game not even starting up I have come to have a mental disease called Autism, it seems all combat arms players have it.

Played back in 2008 and when I got my hands on this game, it was my life for a year and a bit later. It was the only "current" FPS that my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ computer could play at the time and I didn't own any consoles. Long story short, I remember enjoying it a lot.

I got a bit nostalgic (how ever much you can be with something that happened only 7 years ago, but still) I had the urge to try it again, not believing how bad everyone has reported it being since coming to steam.

Holy ♥♥♥♥, they weren't wrong.

The game is infected with hackers that when they disconnect or get kicked, crash the game room and the game has to be reset.

Nothing has changed in the last few years content wise either, except maybe a few new maps that are garbage and aren't actual played. I've only found game rooms for maps that I remember being there 7 years ago. This game has clearly been abandonded.

Avoid it at all costs.

The game is decent. Those complaining are comparing it to something way bigger than CA. Yes, rage kickers, hackers and all of that are in this game. Of course, the hackers are all in the recruit server which is where everyone usually starts out. I have 4 accounts on this game and I started in 2009. I do not consider this game pay-2-win, and I think those complaining just wanna QQ cause they suck. Also alot of people who are either writing reviews for this game are basing it off of 2010-2013. Combat Arms is changing and trying to improve and I think they've done well on it. Besides the fact the servers can't handle the amount of people who have come back to the game.

It's fun the first like 10 days when they give you good guns but then your back to default and unless your rich as balls, and can get all the weapons, gear, characters, and other various items for long durations, then just don't bother. Gamemodes are fun, like quarantine regen and fireteam which require teamwork and strategy, but again you need really good stuff to be sucessful. Default weapons are by far the worst in the game, and in-game currency you get come way too slow. Besides, the community is crap and hackers are everywhere, I wouldn't even recommend this game for the 10 days, there are way better first person shooters out there that aren't p2w or has a ♥♥♥♥ community. Check out Team Fortress 2, CS:GO, Payday 2, the Metro Series, the Arma series, hell even Battefield and COD. Overall, you shouldnt waste your time. With money though, it becomes more fun and gameplay is more acceptable. GG!

Tis a mediocre game at best, and has great potential; but Nexon puts forth too much effort to persist upon everybody to pay money in order to get in-game money or items that are cheap, yet only accessible through paying money. Furthermore, this game has a poor hack-protection guard and has many hackers and cheaters who greatly deminish the slight amount of fun this game has. In summary, don't waste your time on this game; but if you love pay-to-win games, terrible maps and spawns, unfair weapons, and countless hackers, then by all means, go ahead.

I remember being obsessed with this game a few years back. I saw it on Steam recently and downloaded it, excited to see what is new in the game. I'll tell you what's new. The game is filled with hackers now. It is not even worth downloading because every lobby has at least one hacker that sits in a corner of the map with an aimbot killing everyone. Also, to add to the pain, the game is extremely pay-to-win. A decent weapon is at least $5 just to use it for a week. It is just awful and it shouldn't even exist. There is a good thing about this though. It is ♥♥♥♥ing hilarious to watch 2 hackers on opposite teams constantly using aimbot.

I wouldn't recommend it anymore. When it first was released (way before it was on Steam) I actually was getting people into it. It was nothing new in the world of FPS but at the same time it was something fun and you could do so many differnt things depending on your play style. I emded up being really good at the game and quite frankly got bored of it. I will say outright that during those times it was awesome.

Fast forward.

Decided to pickup again after about a year of not playing it and only playing CS:S. right away I noticed that something seemed off. Still had all the weapons from my previous runs but they seemed to do so very very little compared to when I was playing before. Looked into the shop and was horrified. This originally was not a P2W game but there is very little doubt about it being one now.

Really if you want to pay for a game that used to actually be a F2P instead of a P2W game then by all means do so I'll not stop you. However just go into this game knowing that if you want to be able to get anywhere you will have to break open the piggy bank.

TL:DR : The money you'd be dumping into this game is better spent wiping your ♥♥♥ with.
