Story

Three thousand years have passed since the first colonists left Earth. Now the galaxy is divided between the militant star empires and independent mercenary groups. In a remote corner of the galaxy — Sector 1337, the area of the dead — a world has been left behind. Here, the ruins of a great civilization of Aliens have recently been discovered. Huge factories and sprawling cities are falling into decay. Fragments of ships lie on the fields where massive battles were once fought. But there is not a living soul. Everything has been destroyed by a mysterious Cataclysm — a pulsing anomaly that burned out all life within this sector.

This doesn’t stop mankind, the new «owner» of the Universe. Mercenaries and adventurers have flocked to the sector to sift through the ruins and loot its abandoned artifacts, without consideration of the danger. Many have disappeared — including members of well-armed expeditions — but those who have managed to return have uncovered unprecedented riches. So looters continue to come here, to find the Aliens’ lost treasures — and to fight for them.

At first I was very excited about this game. I was looking for a Space game, but after playing it for something around one year, I saw both development and community go down the pipes. First of all, the developers don't care about veterans. They behave lime most of the grievers in the community forum and I was even translating the game until the day they paid me less than one third of what I was making before. I was paid in ingame premium currency and that was usefull as I did not put real money in the game, only hours of work for them. I was actually proud of it for a while. But the thing is, I wanted to be a pirate (achievement ingame, as a matter of fact) and being a pirate was becoming impossible update after update. As an arcade game, I would assume most of the people playing it don't really care about progression and those who do, are only competing with themselfs in a real annoying way in this game. I felt left behind, especially after the last update I saw where you could fly a ship in open space and not be attacked by any other player. That was the final stab on my back... I had to leave. I even heard from developers that I got what I deserved, as if I creating a problem, by playing the game towards one of it's achievements. Needless to say, I end up not playing a game that is free to play, just because community, development plans and behaviour is unacceptable. Not to mention the never ending grinding that will always ask for more of your time, rather than give you time to enjoy it.

Star Conflict has done most things well. This game has:
-A pretty good soundtrack(it's more situational than memorable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing)
-Smooth, easy-to-use controls
-Creative maps
-Great visuals that run increadibly well even on integrated graphics
-A TON of ships and upgrades(the upgrade tree is similar to "World of Tanks")

However, one thing is preventing me from being able to enjoying this game fully, or even be able to give a proper rating. I downloaded this game with great wishes to pla pvp primarily. Little did I know that in order to decrease waiting times, players get thrown into battle against the AI(remember, this is in pvp, not pve or skirmish). This is a great idea in concept, but within the 6.6 hours I've played at the time of this review, I've only played REAL pvp in two matches. Not only have I won every battle against the AI, the fact that I'm not getting to do pvp is preventing me from completing certain achievements, which I WANT to complete so I can move on and complete more to get more in-game credits. The fact that I have started matches with 6 players against 6 bots makes this even more of a frustration since I have fought many battles with just 2 players and 2 bots. Why can't the matches just be 3v3 instead of 6 players vs. 6 bots?

I give star conflict a 4/5 only because of the "pvp issue" and a UI that can sometimes get on my nerves due to a lack of information. If anyone has played and liked "Metalstorm"(I know it's at least been on iOS) then I highly suggest downloading Star Conflict. It's basically a Sci-Fi metalstorm with the upgrade tree from World of Tanks.

Quite interesting game, it takes some skill to command and manuever the ships. Despite being addicting at first, the PvE missions get a bit too repetitive afer awhile. They can be challenging too, which is very positive. However, the PvP is very unbalanced as it matches new players with high geared ones, making the matches very biased. The upgrade system is intuitive and choice-free since it allows players to choose certain ship paths. Ovearall, this is an interesting game, specially for those who love sci-fi and space games.

Glorified grinding. Except it's not very glorious.

Flight and combat is brain numbingly simple; all ships have the same weapon placements. They can shoot best in front and slightly above, decently to the sides and some slightly behind (frigates, cruisers, etc) and not below or behind. Everything feels and flies like a fighter so there s no feeling of flying a big, badass cruiser armed to the teeth.

Extremely limited armaments; you get a main weapon and missiles. And maybe an offensive ability. There are no broadside cannons backed up by short range lasers, with a forward facing railgun for taking out large ships. Nay, none of these ships have any sort of diversity at a given moment, and the options for weapon mounts themselves are pretty limited. Missiles come in several flavors, from "stronger, get with paid-for (yeah, I did the match, 30 cents for a one game use set of missiles.) currency" to "I'm smart enough to only spend the grindable credits for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t."

As a result, there's no real strategy beyond deathballing with your team and simply being more accurate with your pew pews (and having higher tier ships and equipment, of course). Positioning does not matter beyond using asteriods to block missiles (I seemed to be the only one smart enough to do this in all of my matches.. lol)

I was most interested in PvP but I quickly found that you don't face any players until you get rank 5 ships... easily several hours playtime to get barely there. So starting out, you get to fight nothing but not so smart bots. And then there's PvE and Co-Op with even more bots that are still not very smart, just more plentiful and calling upon greater pools of health and shields. Simply wonderful (awful). PvP was eventually reached and the experiece was only slightly better than playing with the bots. But bots actually fought for objectives.. so it could be arguably worse?

Objective based games were terribly shallow. Typical "capture the beacon" or "deliver the bomb" sort of stuff. The only mode that was genuinely fun to play was one where one player from both teams would be randomly selected to be the Captain. As long as the Captain was alive, ships respawned. To win the match the enemy Captain had to be eliminated along with all other ships. The couple of matches I got to play this game mode were a good tug of war with all ships on offense ready to scramble back to protect the Captain at a moment's notice.

Unfortuneately, the entire time I was never impressed with myself after killing 9 enemies in a row within a minute because it's easy. Skill makes no difference; all you need is a good mouse and the ability to track a little circle with it.

Did I have fun? Meh. Only in one mode, after hours of grinding to get to where I could actually play against PEOPLE instead of STUPID BOTS.

Are the mechanics solid? Of course, the game is well designed but far too minimalistic.. overall the simplicity makes it lackluster.

Was it pretty? Hell yeah. Very nice looking game, at least. It just doesn't have the gameplay to boot.

Verdict: 4/10 only because Captain assassination halfway made up for the rest of the time I wasted on this game. At least it was free.

Farming for weeks and then paying millions and more millions of credits and eventually even currency that you mostly have to purchase with real money on top just to get a big, pretty ship?
No. Go ♥♥♥♥ yourself. That's bland, boring and overall stupid.

This game's microtransactions are so up-in-your-face, it's actually unbelievable.
"Buying galactic currency makes your game progression easier and more comfortable."
When someone advertises their microtransactions like THAT, you know their ♥♥♥♥'s ♥♥♥♥ed.
For the amount of money these guys get by doing this, they should at least invest in good servers.
3/10 pretty ships, otherwise a pain in the ♥♥♥. Classic Gaijin Entertainment.
