Story

Three thousand years have passed since the first colonists left Earth. Now the galaxy is divided between the militant star empires and independent mercenary groups. In a remote corner of the galaxy — Sector 1337, the area of the dead — a world has been left behind. Here, the ruins of a great civilization of Aliens have recently been discovered. Huge factories and sprawling cities are falling into decay. Fragments of ships lie on the fields where massive battles were once fought. But there is not a living soul. Everything has been destroyed by a mysterious Cataclysm — a pulsing anomaly that burned out all life within this sector.

This doesn’t stop mankind, the new «owner» of the Universe. Mercenaries and adventurers have flocked to the sector to sift through the ruins and loot its abandoned artifacts, without consideration of the danger. Many have disappeared — including members of well-armed expeditions — but those who have managed to return have uncovered unprecedented riches. So looters continue to come here, to find the Aliens’ lost treasures — and to fight for them.

This is a great example of a great MMO action game ruined by bad balancing and bad design desisions of developers driven by greed, sloth and rush for spectacle creep. The best version of the game was last one with shared weapons and modules deep into OBT and prior to soft launch in Steam. All changes to the game in versions released after that didn't make the game better at all, it didn't even make the game more diverse, while making it a lot bigger, a lot more grindy and a lot more convoluted. What was once a game of tactical freedom and custom space ship building mastery became game with just several winning builds and just several winning strategies, but didn't stay this way for too long. After introduction of "open space", destroyers and new, more powerful premium ships it became a P2W grindfest where you either grind other players and mobs to get your own destroyer, or you've already grinded and/or paid enough to grind other player for no other reason than love for easy wins.
I wouldn't recomend installing or playing this game nowdays or any time in future. However, if you can acquire a time machine somehow, try going back to 2012 or 2013 to play Star Conflict open beta, it was one of the best action games I've ever played.

Don't ever ever play this game.

In the beginning you might like it. But after learning more of it you'll hate the guts of its developers. Because they're ridiculously lame and have special ability of turning a really promising game into complete piece of sh**.

Cons:
1) Awful devs, they'll always be able to surprise you in a bad way with their development decisions.
2) The community is toxic and mostly consists of 6-16 y.o. teens. Most of skilled and mature players have already left this game.
3) English-speaking community was tiny even on its peak which was couple of years ago, nowadays it's even smaller.
4) Devs and moderators have no respect to players. They often ban players on fictitios reasons or to enforce censorship (you can't criticize the devs openly).
5) Year or two ago pay-to-win element was almost nonexistent but today those who donate money have much easier access to the best ships.
6) Previously it was a 6 degrees-of-freedom game, but the devs chose to make the game easier for players unable to master proper skills, and they degraded this game to 4 DOF.
7) This is a session-based pvp game, so having a good match balancer is crucial. But in SC the matchmaker is awful: don't expect evenly balanced tough fights - they're super rare. Most of the time you either will be stomping the enemy or get stomped.
8) Some time ago the devs declared they were aiming for cybersports. But that was nothing more than talk.

Avoid this game or you'll regret it later.

RU

StarConflict has customizable ships, but way too much DLC and Greed to get to the interesting late-game.
Nice graphics, good shooter, but too many barriers toward the interesting features.

It's marked free2play but too pay2enjoy for me.

This game used to be great. In fact, I met my wife there. Unfortunately, the developers are incredibly stubborn and don't listen to their community outside Russia and have since made decisions that completely wreck the gameplay the game once had. One of the biggest missed opportunities in gaming history - this game could have been enormous.

Short Version:
As said by many others, it used to be good, but not any more. It's another game where all the devs care about now is making money, not the game, and certainly not its players. Don't download it, and definitely don't spend money on it, just avoid it.

Long Version:
Some fifteen, to twenty years ago online games were a niche thing, devs didn't make them expecting to make mountains of money, they were just in it to make games, and with all being pay to play games, they focused on making them their own brand of fun, so people that liked it would keep paying for subscriptions. Then the free to play (F2P) model became a thing, and over time more F2P PC games adopted the more abusive F2P model that used to just be the kind of thing seen in browser, and mobile games, where your only real options to get ahead in time was to no life the game, or spend money, lots of money. Now more, and more online games just seem like they're only there to make money, and nothing else, fun be damned. In fact, they'll purposely put in things that are frustrating, just so they can say "look, you can alleviate your frustration with the cash shop."

That's what has happened here. In the early days they defended paid premium ships as just things that were a different variant of the ships you can get without spending money, as they provided no real game play advantage, which was largely true then, other things to spend money on were cosmetics, and modest boosters to gains. Now decision after decision seems to have no other reasoning other than to milk as much money as they can from players too easily parted with their money. Short on the parts needed to make that new super powerful item/ship since they just increased the volume of materials you need multiple times over, without increasing in-game material rate of accusation, or are about to remove that ship from production? No problem, you can now buy those materials in their cash shop, through random boxes, even materials to make in-game items you can gain in no other way, that's right, such things can basically be called cash shop equipment like weapons. Want to grind it instead, well maybe, but if that is possible you may need to spend hours a day for months, and you likely need to fly fully levelled ships, so all that XP you're getting is wasted, unless you're willing to spend real money to transfer the excess XP to other ships. They will make new items, and classes of powerful ships after a short release event timed exclusives not available again for a period of months just to create more demand for them during the release event, and get people to spend up to several hundred dollars US to get ONE ship before they're gone.

All this can come at the expense of balance, and game play since they're removing the ability of other players to get said items, providing the whales with an advantage. The game feels like it's losing players too, causing them to keep making increasingly desperate (and unpopular) changes to their matchmaker rules so rounds can start more easily, since most of the game needs other players for you to even play. The part that doesn't need other players (open space) just gets ignored, and gutted to make other parts "better," with nothing but the promise of some all important fix all update that has been delayed for months. Although, if that update is as effective as their recent module upgrade update, then it will just make things grindier, and all around worse. What it comes down to is that any company willing to hurt their game, and their players to make money, doesn't deserve your money, or time, just don't bother.

I've had some fun playing this game for a 'few' hours and have reached rank 13/15 recently.
But now the grinding for new ships/parts became too annoying for me.
This is partly due to some - in my opinion - bad game design decisions:
-Your ships are disabled for a long duration when you leave a battle AND
-Matchmaking quite often results in unbalanced teams AND
-Spawn Camping is neither forbidden nor discouraged by an effective spawn protection. (There is one that is disabled as soon as you fire a shot, which will be your last one if half of the enemy team is firing at you.)
Just to be clear: I rarely leave games but it is definitely NOT fun if you are killed within 1-10 seconds after waiting 30 seconds for respawn.
-Since I received positive "Karma" by killing lots of Aliens in "Open Space" I've noticed a tendency to suddenly explode soon after entering "Open Space" because there has been a group of "negative Karma"-guys waiting for targets to spawn. - spawn police npcs seem to be helpless A variation of this is when you finally found some useful ressources during asteroid mining. (aka. "the galaxy wide easter egg hunt" ;-))
-Late game ships require a huge amount of work to get. (I'm not even talking about maxing everything...)
-Voice chat with team mates has to be activated via the settings menu but I'm not even sure if it works because I have yet to receive an answer...

I only have limitted time that I could use to play this game and I decided to do something else now.
That does not mean that you won't be happy with it but you should be warned about the things I mentioned. If you are not willing to spend/"waste" a lot of time into this game you might be disappointed.

I'd like to thank the developer to include Linux support. It ran quite nicely.

I started playing this game about a year ago.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and would play it a few hours a day, never able to fully leave it (I'd quit and come back a half hour later wondering why I quit).

I stopped for a bit and came back and it was a different game. Not only did they nerf the game completely, they added so much more DLC cash grabbing bs. I've tried to legitimize keeping it around, and I'm finally uninstalling it today. Same game modes but more difficult, crappy open world, no more new game modes that subvert the original game, etc. Such a depression outcome to such a glorious start.

This game had so much potential in it's beginning, and usually brought some pretty good updates, it's community was active and generally decent people, and developers didn't have a negative relationship with players. Now, where we are now is where we have been for about a year now: In terms of updates, it's 1 step forward 3 steps back - we're made to believe that something cool is coming, or something good is coming, and sometimes it does, but usually updates that follow are either 1) ignoring problems with previous updates 2) fixing "problems" that never existed 3) Creating fixes for problems that actually then create worse problems 4) Make it more Pay-to-Win 5) add new useless, bad, or pay-to-win features/items.

I can no longer say that I still play it for the game, rather I only play it because of the bonds I've forged with many of the pilots in my corporation, and I don't want to leave that. I wouldn't recommend that anyone new wastes their time with this game.

This game is many things, the most people would blind it as would be "Pay to win" and this is not true, I have played this game(not on steam, sperate client" ever since it cameout and I can tell you for sure: you can earn everything for free, this game is amazing; its fast, fluid, and gets you into the "mood" to shoot stuff and just destroy. I strongly recommend this game for a number of reasons I care not to list as its obious if you play. :)
