Hva utviklerne sier:

Why Early Access?

“We were at a point in Starbound's development where it was already pretty fun, so we decided to release the game in beta through early access to ensure the community has a chance to help us shape the game.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“It's difficult for us to give a solid release date-- we're not so good at those, we've learned. Starbound still has a ways to go, but we'll keep you posted via our website!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Starbound will contain a plot and sidequests, more dungeons, more bosses and lore, among other features.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Starbound is already extremely playable and contains a vast amount of content in its current state! There are two beta branches currently in use-- [STABLE] and [NIGHTLY].

The stable branch receives less frequent updates, as we're currently working on one big update that will complete the first few tiers of player progression.

The [NIGHTLY] branch is updated automatically every night, and is for players who want to track progress or simply can't wait to check out shiny new features. :D Play at your own risk, though, as these builds are not tested and bugs/crashes are likely.

Find out more about how to opt into the nightly builds here: http://playstarbound.com/support/#unstable

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will likely change after Early Access!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We post daily progress updates on our blog, and we're always hanging around IRC.”

[DAILY BLOG] Weekly Update Round-Up! 24/10/14

Howdy!

#Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
Regular readers of the blog might remember my previous posts about adding more terrain variation to planets. Well, that’s what I’m working on this week! Rather than talking much about it I’ll just show you a few samples of new terrain patterns:

Spikes!

Canyons!

Ledges!

These are still WIPs, and I’ve got more ideas to put in, but so far it’s adding a lot of interesting variety to planets and I’m excited to continue working on this for a bit.

---

#Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
I’m sure you can guess what I’ve been working on. Yup! Still adding new weapons and loot! While I’m keeping some stuff a surprise, over the past few days I’ve implemented a few fun craftable throwing weapons. Here’s a peek at a couple of them!

Thorn Grenade
“A makeshift nail bomb. Scary what one can achieve with a fruit and small explosive.”

You may recall there was a nailbomb grenade in the game, however I personally found it not particularly useful due to the fact it operated on a timer and it was almost impossible to get the nails hitting where you wanted them to. This devilish combination explodes on impact, spraying twice as many thorns, making it pretty lethal if you land direct hits, particularly if the target was already in the middle of a large group.

Throwing Bones
“Nothing screams archaic like throwing bones at your enemies.”

Finding old bones may now prove beneficial in more ways than one. This item when thrown releases three bones in an arc that bounce a couple of times before breaking apart. This makes it entirely possible to sling them considerable distance across the landscape, if the terrain is in your favour.

That’s it from me. Good night everybody!

[DAILY BLOG] Weekly Update Round-Up! 17/10/2014

#Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
On Wednesday we finally merged the massive status system changes, including the new status effect system, into our main development branch. Those who are following the nightly builds have probably noticed some major differences, lots of improvements, and a few things still missing. The past couple of days have been spent finding and fixing bugs, adding missing Lua bindings, cleaning up old status effects and adding new ones. GeorgeV, Necotho and Armagon continue their development of more biomes and biome items, and we’ve been coming up with lots of good ways to use the new status system and status effects to make biomes and their items feel unique and interesting. Next week we’ll be reworking the food and hunger system in ways that make it less of a chore and more of a bonus. More on that soon; have a great weekend!

---

#Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
Evening folks!

I’ve carried on as usual with implementing the multitude of new weapons and items, many of which are taking advantage of our status system rework. I thought I’d try something a little different today and see how quickly you guys can identify what one of these weapons is from the sound it makes. I think this one is gonna be quite popular with PvP-oriented players. Click here to hear it!

It’s been a fun implementing these new items, and the list is expanding all the time. There’s even stuff like this!

What would such an item do, I wonder?

#Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
One of the features that we’ve wanted for a long time is a better way for modders to make their own GUIs (graphical user interfaces). Currently, all of Starbound’s interface windows are configured in JSON, but their appearances are largely static and they can only respond to user input in a few fixed ways. On Friday we had been discussing this in the ##starbound-modding IRC channel, trying to figure out the best way to make objects with dynamic displays and lamenting the fact that there wasn’t any good method currently available. So, over the weekend, Kyren took the initiative and made one, which I finally got a chance to test out this evening!

The system she built allows an object to open a configurable interface window when the player interacts with it. This window can contain all the usual window elements, but can also include a canvas widget which gives a Lua script direct access to primitive drawing operations and user input. These ‘scripted consoles’ can monitor and respond to keyboard and mouse input, and draw their own lines, polygons, images, text, etc. Essentially this allows all kinds of custom interfaces and even simple games to be built as mods and run within Starbound!

One of the most obviously fun uses for this is to make in-game games. Here’s a truly awful implementation of Pong that I threw together as a test:

Unfortunately we don’t have the time to go wild on this just yet, but this is a good first step toward a much better GUI system in the future. Some other examples we came up with include controlling turrets in a base, hacking puzzles for missions, and numerical keypad locks for doors. I hope to have more time to develop these at some point. In the meantime, however, it’s available for modders in the nightly build, and they’re already going crazy with great ideas. For example, Neurisko is starting on a full-fledged programmable computer made from scratch:

…and that’s just the beginning! What kinds of things do YOU want to make?

---

#Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
Hey guys, noticed there wasn’t a post made yesterday. Sorry I didn’t get this up sooner!

Here’s the quick rundown of what folks have been working on:

- Metadept has been working on the GUI stuff, following on from his Tuesday post. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the community does with this functionality once he’s finished.

- Kyren is working on something cool that we’ll (hopefully) have something to show for later today, provided things goes smoothly.

- George has continued his work on filling the biomes with more stuff, which ties into…

- Yup, I’ve still been working on making lots of the new loot and weapons actually function. I’ve spent a chunk of time recording new sounds for these things too.

For those of you who read my post on Monday and took a stab at identifying what the audio sample I included was; if your guess was that it was a paintball gun, you were right!

There are six colour variations you can get, each painting the enemies you hit in the corresponding colour for a few seconds, making it super clear when you’ve successfully hit them. Novel in the grand adventure, but potentially really cool for PvP servers. You’ll be able to find the blueprint and the unique resources to make it in one of the mini-biomes.

Later folks!

That's all, folks! Have a nice weekend! ːSBHorseː

“Starbound is one of the most impressive never-ending games I've ever played.”
9 – Polygon

“Starbound's delivering on its core promises even in its early access incarnation.”
Eurogamer

“This might be a bare-bones version of the game to come, but boy, check out those bones. The game's minutiae will be mapped out across various wikis for years to come, and many mechanics will be added and refined, but even now, Starbound is an enticing journey of discovery that reminds you just how exciting it can be to stare at a sky full of stars.”

I can only hope, at some point in the distant future, that there will be an update to this game adding half of what we were promised. I purchased on day 1. I regret that immensely. It has been approximately 10 months since the last update to the main game. Just remember that.

Edit: I am aware of the "unstable" and "Nightly" branches. The problem comes when the baseline game, the one people paid fifteen dollars for, is unchanged. They can update the other branches all they want, but until they update Starbound itself, with official, supported content that has been promised since day one, I feel as though I wasted my money.

There will come a day when the walls around this game will fall. When bugs and lack of support come crashing down! But it is not this day....

It was great; perhaps even beautiful. You all can see my play time, there is no shame here. I loved this game for a very long time. Alas, all beautiful things eventually wither.
This game has died(*EDIT* Fallen into a deep coma). The devs have absolutely ceased to communicate with the players. The community has fallen out of line with no stable update since last December(*EDIT* FEBRUARY)
Early access is a leap of faith, it's always been that way. This one is a massive flub.
Here's to hoping this game goes somewhere.
Here's to hoping that someday I can play it again, for it's failed to start everytime I've tried. For 6 months.

Edit: Read the comments for some high comedy and amusing assumptions.
TLDR: Great potential, abandoned by the devs. Sadly becoming the norm for Early Access.

Bought a 4 pack for the family and then we waited months and months to actually play.
A year ago we were having great fun with it, but the content was shallow, we put it aside to wait for the advancement stuff to come in...
and we waited...
and we waited......
and we waited..........

so far this game has been waiting, a teaser, and more waiting.

Well now it looks like the wait is over, the game is dead.
Sad.

This game had a very good sales pitch, but the execution and the priorities of the devs seem to go in different and not fully defined directions.

It's been months since the last update and the only things pushed into the nightlies seem to be stuff that should be secondary. They just don't seem interested in finishing it for some reason. A very serious problem for a game to have.

Not to mention the past history of delays, which should give you zero hope of seeing the game completed in your lifetime.

If you buy it, have this in mind, you are buying a proof of concept, an experimental game that will give you some hours of entertaintment but that will be unbalanced and broken. Sometimes progression requires you to input cheats. Sometimes it's a grind, sometimes a delight. It's all over the place. If you decide to spend your money don't expect a complete game, or a game that will ever be complete.

Starbound had made over $4,000,000 when I last checked. I'm sad to say that $20 of that came out of my own pocket. I had high hopes for this game. I purchased it on Dec. 7th. It was virtually unplayable. Now it's Sep. 30th. Still unplayable. Everything about this game is terrible. There are other reviews that go into detail but you can rest assured that it all sucks. Where are the updates? Last update was in April. What have they been doing? I consider Chucklefish to be thieves and liars. They have soured me on the whole concept of Early Access. I want my money back.

PROS:
It's supposed to be cool and fun to play, like Terraria.

CONS:
It's not cool or fun to play.
Bad physics
repetitive weapons/guns
repetitive enemies
repetitive worlds(different skins. that's it.)
Serious lag issues
soundtrack sucks
Early beta for over 9 months. No significant progress.

Early progress lacks. The team may be lacking leadership or direction.

I bought this game a while ago, enjoyed it enough to make my friends get it. We played it, got all the techs, beat the bosses and did a little planetary exploration. There was cool dungeons and random villages, but there was no unique loot or anything that made it original. nearly every planet has some village or dungeon, and they all had the same loot.

Fast forward 10 months, I went to play and it is pretty much the same game. Except now I am experiencing more crashing issues and a slight lag/unstability.

Hold off on the purchase until there is some direction and progress made, not concepts and ideas.

As much as i love the idea of Starbound, in It's current state and with the current speed of development I just can't recommend it.

Progression through the game is just a grind to make the next tier of weapons and armor, and then a easy bossfight to unlock the next tiers. Mining the planets is slow and unrewarding, which encourages the player to just run across the surface of the planets to find surface ores. Most of my time in the game ended up being spent on running, which got boring fast.

The speed of development has been extremely slow, and several months has passed since the last stable update. And progress still seems to be slow.

I don't recommend the game in it's current state, if the idea sounds interesting, check it out when it's been completed.

It's been in development for around 3 years, and all it could achieve is somewhat better graphics, lame world gen, lame randomized items / enemies, completely useless hunger system, lame and unfinished shops, lame skill system, MIDI instrument system and "better" building options (that are mainly destroying another building's materials to replace them, which means you are limited).

Buy Terraria.

I got this game thinking it would be more fun then Terraria, It seemed to contain much more.
I was wrong. Just Buy terraria, It contains so much more and has lovely updates now and then with a happy fanbase.
Ive done everything there is to do in terraria atleast six time with a total of 424 hours of gameplay, still counting. Starbound ive played a nice chunk of. But there is no change, everytime I create a new character and enter a "Brand new exciting world!" it just looks the same as the last, with stupid looking creatures and trees while terraria you feel the world has changed everyrtime you create a new one. In terraria you can have corruption or crimson invading your world and try to stop it, then you will have Hallow spreading in your world causing colourfull rainbows and death with new cave systems and what not. as you go on in terraria you find crasy guns and melee weapons which do interesting things, Ive not come across a single item in starbound that makes me go "Wow what a cool gun/sword, Im sure keeping this for some time!" The point im trying to say is,
Buy Terraria, its also cheaper plus I don't really think this game will be improving later on, But I may be wrong and look like an idiot, all in all its your choice, if you have terraria and want somthing familliar like this, I recomend not getting this but carry on with terraria. The only thing I liked about this game were the respawn animation, that are fun to look at first time, but then become the most boring thing you have ever seen after about 3 deaths.
Also I just found out this game got awards? I laughed for a bit then got depressed...
I mean it got in the top 100 PC games? Now I feel like sitting in a corner with a cross to fend of early access games.
forgot to mention trying to start the game takes about 30 minutes.
Have fun.

It has been a long time since I've purchased, and as well played this game, and the saddest part is that there really has been barely any developer progress on this game, i played the game a fair bit to delve into the different planets, but in its current state it just gets extremely boring and repetitive rather quick, alot of the community seems upsetted by this and outraged over not being able to get refunds, I myself am disappointed my money feels so wasted, although my time was spent on this game, it was not worth it, and feels fairly ripped off many other things I've seen.

Starbound is a game that makes you go hmm...
Released on Steam's early access funtion nearly a year ago, the game back then was a chock-a-block full of daily to weekly updates with positive reviews for patches (except for the Valentine's Day patch with featured a crap ton of bugs).

However, this game has not recieved a single update since around January except for a measly night phase beta option - which is still VERY buggy.

For now, it's best to wait for the full release.

Games like Starbound are why I will never purchase an Early Access Game ever again. The developers did not deliver on their promises, have released little to no recent updates, and have seemingly just up and abandoned the game. I should have just set my $45.00 on fire because that would have at least provided me with a small amount of warmth for a short period of time; spending it on Starbound was a foolish mistake. Pre-ordering the Gold Tier, and giving these scammers even more money, was an especially foolish mistake.

Do not buy Starbound. It's already like a year, if not moreso, behind schedule with no signs that the game will ever be finished. What the developers promised sounded pretty good but it's very apparent that they now have no interest in following through on those promises.

Do not buy Starbound; it's a waste of money. I cannot stress that enough: do NOT buy Starbound.

Oh Starbound... The game of massive potential with nearly zero progress.

I really want to like this game, but the developers make sure you can't. From the absolute awful forum management, to the abysmal updates, this game is going nowhere fast. It takes the development team a month to implement one update, and they are usually all the things you don't care about this early on, like Flickering Lights.

The storyline is currently 1/10th complete, and it has been out for nearly two years. If that rate of progress doesn't scare you off, don't worry, it gets worse. The company has since moved offices (to a different country), expanded their team, and started over 5 new projects. I wonder where all the Kickstarter and Steam money is going?

Nearly every patch will wipe your character and world. In the 50+ hours I have played, I have completed the game three times (and I wasn't rushing to end game).

I strongly recommend you avoid this game. Terraria while older is still a million times better.
