Winter update [UNSTABLE] Edition! ~*The More You Know*~

Hey there!

We pushed the changes mentioned in our recent trailer to the unstable branch last night– rejoice! Anyone who’s been playing the nightly builds won’t see a huge difference, but anyone who makes the switch from stable to unstable will see some pretty massive changes.

So here’s what you need to know about the unstable update, starting with…

How to Switch to the Unstable Branch

There’s a handy tutorial right here about how to switch to the unstable or nightly branch of the beta. Be sure to follow the instructions to switch to unstable. :)

World/Character File Compatibility

If you choose to switch to the unstable branch, please know that your characters and worlds will not yet be compatible with the latest version of the game. Your old characters and worlds will still be there, but the unstable branch will use a different storage location than the stable branch for the time being, while we work out how to upgrade old characters.

We will try to maintain save file compatibility within unstable as much as possible, but it will depend on what sort of changes we have to make during unstable, so we cant make any promises.

If you are currently running nightly, then you probably already know how everything works already. FYI The unstable branch will use a ‘storage_unstable’ directory while we work on compatibility with stable.

Known Issues:
  • Many progression quests aren’t final, some are placeholders for future missions
  • Combat balance is still WIP
  • Performance issues, particularly in dense areas like dungeons and the outpost
  • Background parallaxes have problematic transitions between world layers, e.g. oceans
  • Pixel costs and rewards not yet balanced
  • Interface windows (containers, AI, etc) can remain open after switching worlds or moving away from the triggering object
  • Cooking recipes for tier 5 and 6 crops need to be implemented
  • Crops sometimes get out of sync when grown on ship
  • Enemy hit/death sounds sometimes fail to play
  • Some errors in enemy movement and pathfinding
  • Rare crash when removing items from containers, appears as “(InventoryException) Not allowed to discard stack when locked.”
  • The launcher, on some people’s machines, will spew dll errors about missing ordinals. This is not fatal however, and the launcher will still work after you close them.
  • And a whole lot more (probably)

Evening folks!

When Starbound’s overall balance structure was first established, humanoid NPCs weren’t really a primary consideration at the time, nor was PVP, so the game was largely balanced based around the damage between players and the monsters. While this system was fine at first, it has been the root cause of much difficulty in balancing humanoid NPCs who were primarily balanced to fight against the player and got absolutely trashed by monsters, which was a problem, especially with our growing focus on missions. This necessitated a rethink of how everything was balanced.

To that end, Tiyuri and I, have gone over almost everything with a fine-tooth comb. Here’s a brief overview of the biggest changes.

- NPCs now use armor, so damage inflicted on them is reflective of their armor. Additionally their health now scales on a curve similar to the player’s.
- Damage values across the board have risen. Monsters now die more easily, but they can also kill the player faster too. Fight carefully!
- The energy scaling curve on guns has been completely reworked for a more gradual and consistent climb.
- Tiered armors have been completely rebalanced to suit the new armor and energy scaling levels.
- Players now start off with access to two weapons from the offset, with most races gaining a one-handed shortsword in addition to their broadsword. The novakids gain a two-handed rifle.
- Generated weapon values now typically sit somewhere between the tiered weapons. Rare weapons may still potentially be more damaging, but this should help to keep tiered weapons useful all throughout the game’s progression.

It might not seem like much but these changes have involved a frankly exhausting amount of configuration, but it has transformed the game feel quite significantly. A pleasant side effect of this humanoid-centric rebalancing is that the game is largely balanced for PVP too, provided all parties have suitably leveled equipment.

Guns are more dependable weapons overall, but melee inflicts monstrous damage for those willing to take the risk. In our testing, we found ourselves having heated 1-on-1 exchanges, rapidly alternating between ranged sniping and clashing swords when our energy reserves were locked away. It was both frantic and fun! I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys make of it.

Edit: Ignore all those other negative reviews that say "The devs never update the game" ... the devs released word that, instead of releasing multiple small updates in the actual game, they'd do so in a beta version so folks could keep up with events. There's many players writing reviews that're completely ignorant of this fact.

Edit(2): People have mentioned that the "major problems" arent getting fixed... This update shown in the video, plus the claims that Chucklefish has made point to the fact that they will HOPEFULLY be fixed.

Comments section has some neat points, go read it. Sorry to all the folks who didn't find my review helpful. I tried.

I purchased Starbound back in December 2013, knowing it was Early-access and a so-called “beta“. However, looking at the product, the name “beta” does not fit its state. Even the head developer confirmed that this is only a tech-demo. I could live with that back then, because “thick and fast” updates were announced. In fact, there were several meaningful updates in December, but then only a few in January and February, and after some cosmetic patches in spring, stable or unstable patches weren’t released anymore. It’s 5th of December, one year and one day after the release of the pre-Alpha; Starbound had four updates in 2013, all of them between January and April.

It’s kind of frustrating that even if you are aware of the fact that you are in a beta, this beta isn’t a beta at all. I’ve never seen a developer in the suggestion forum. The multiplayer-scene suffers under the bad performance of Starbound; servers with more than five players tend to be unplayable. The lack of updates destroyed MP and its community. Even some of the big modders - like the inventor of the beloved “Avali”-race mod - left because they were annoyed by CFs policy. There was also a time when only one thread existed for ALL bugs to report! I count this behavior as highly incompetent and unprofessional. Even an “indie” has to keep some quality standards.

Now to the so called “Nightly Builds”. Don’t get brainwashed by the fan boys on the CF forums who claim that CF produces updates, saying “you only have to download the Nightlies”. Not only are the NBs broken (developer admitted that), they are mere developer builds to show the players at least that some kind of development is happening; the NBs were introduced because there were rumors that CF didn’t work on the game at all. Also, even if they have a support forum for it, they officially don’t want that bugs in the NBs get reported. To make the thing even more contradictory, those who claim that these NBs are a “beta” have never tested any beta at all; sometimes, you can’t even advance in the NBs without admin commands, and your saves/characters can be corrupted if you are unlucky.

But even if you follow the NBs, you will see that they have cancelled or added features of the old stable, changing some aspects of the game in a different direction. That underlines the fact that the current “stable” isn’t a beta, because normally, a beta has most of its features integrated. Starbound instead seems to be rebuild from the scratch. Why? I don’t know the answer. However, the developers don’t hear what the community says or at least stick to their own plans – you can investigate several thesis papers by Tiy from December and January – but obviously don’t have any priorities when developing.

So, even if you take in account that this is an alpha and early access, all things they promise to you won’t happen; don’t think that you can give them help as a modder, as a bugtester or as an artist. I didn’t encounter any developer since spring on the forums, except if they posted a dev diary. CF always cries how bad and demanding the community is, but they are not interested in the community either; if you want to get some news, you don’t have to visit the forums, but look at reddit or twitter. At the beginning, they said that they wanted to introduce popular mods in their updates; but in one year, they only introduced two. It would’ve been a good idea to add at least some mods in the long phase without an update, but even here CF fails.

To make things worse, there were some really bad comments and even accusations made by the developers in open public. I’ve never seen something like that where developers accuse their customers, when they criticize the development; critics can be idiots sometimes, but there IS the problem of absent updates, and as such, the developers are responsible for their own failure, not others.

Starbound started as a promising game with a bunch of potential. Unfortunately, CF destroyed it. They claim that an “unstable” (!) patch will come in the next weeks. Not sure when they will push the stable. They are also talking about a mysterious 1.0 version that will come later. I don’t think we’ll see it before December 2015.

If you are a person full of passion who wants to give a hand, wants to be part of something big and likes to enrich a community – don’t try Starbound. Don’t do it. If you are a multiplayer-person, don’t even think about it. And if you are a lonesome, but experienced gamer who wants a cool, complex game… you should wait until 2016 until thinking about a possible purchase of Starbound 1.0.

I have to say that I really want to love this game. I really would like to see Starbound succeeding. However, Chucklefish makes it impossible for me. I'm not the only one. There were times when this game was played by 80.000 people a week, or at least 20.000 to 30.000. Now, there are only 1.000-2.000. Still, everyone is convinced that the whole fan base will return after a new stable update. I doubt that.

(A short addition: I don’t start Starbound via Steam, that’s the motive why I have fewer hours shown than I actually played. The launcher is bugged, by the way, and can double the hours you played, leading to false statistics.)

Its pretty good... for the first hour...

I dont really recommend this game. Get terraria. Starbound is fun for the first hour or two, but after that it gets boring. Trust me.
They might come out with more updates for new stuff, but still, I just dont like how this game was made.

The game hyped itself way too much, and with several million dollars and a decent sized staff, they still fail to deliver and content updates since last year. Twitter feed from the devs only showed picture of a new office and a puppy. Just a puppy. Glad that money is being put to good use. Still have yet to see any decent content. (Sure they have a big content patch coming out 'soon' but it ONLY took a YEAR) I'm just saying for the manpower and the cash they have, this game gets less updates than anything I've ever played. If you plan on getting the game, I reccomend a pirated version. The last thing these guys deserve is more money from poor unsuspecting people.

I have bought this promising game in Early Access about a year ago. Apparently, I wasn't the only one. ChuckleFish raised 1 million in the first month alone. It seems they used that money to party 24/7 after that, because, while I had some fun messing around in the beta, it has not received any decent updates since. This game is the reason I will never buy any Early Access title again.

When I first played this game, it blew my mind. The soundtrack was excellent, there seemed to be so many things to do. But then you hit the "endgame." There becomes nothing. An endless grind for no reason. And then the updates stopped. For a year. They said they were going to update it weekly. Of course, they could always start work on it again, but after such an immense dissapointment, I don't think I'll ever be nearly as excited about this game as I once was.

As of the time of this posting, 12/13/14, I cannot recommend this game.
So, here's the thing: This is an incredibly promising game. I had a lot of fun while playing it. But things eventually got pretty stale. There are lots of planets and places to explore, but you aren't really given a reason to explore them. They hardly differ and the loot you get from exploring these places isn't really that great. Of-course, at the time, I could forgive this because it was early access. But it's been something around 8 months or so since I've played and there has not been one major update since then. There has been little to no improvement, and seeing how long it's been in development, I can't help but wonder what the devs are doing. 8 months with no updates on an early access game is absurd. It's truly dissapointing how this game turned out, because it really could've been something special.

This game could be good, but right now it’s not. There are much better (and worse) games for 15.00 There has been no "real" update to the game in a long time. The starbound website shows some of the stuff they are working, on but until they post a major update it doesn’t inspire much confidence. If you are looking for a good mining game go play terrira (again if necessary). Looking for a good space game? Go play FTL. Come back to this game in a year and see if this game has gone anywhere.

When this game entered the "Early Access" market on steam I was stoked. I instantly loved the idea of a Terraria type game with a more open ended sci-fi element. In fact, over a year ago I would have recommended this game to any and all of my friends. It showed great potential and still has that potential.

However, the reason why I can not recommend this game is because it's been over a year without ANY major updates...or minor updates for that matter. Many people suggest downloading the "nightlies" versions of the game to see the progress that is being made, but good luck getting it to run and/or maintaining stability (obviously, being a nightly). Whenever these devs finally get their act together and release stabalized playable content for this game I will change my review, but until then I would hold off for a few more months.

Bought this about a year ago, because it sounded like a cool idea. First playthroughs felt very sparse. Every once in a while, I'll try it out again, but despite making various changes and additions, it hasn't got beyond that "sparse" feeling. That might mean there is a lot of space to fill out, so that the end product will be very rich. However, after a year of changes to glacial for me to really notice, I've basically given up as my original enthusiasm has become a distant memory.

Good luck, devs, I hope you power through to the rich game I had once hoped for - sooner or later.

Could not recommend this game. I thought this would be updated a lot more often than it has been. I really loved the idea, but the lack of content makes it die when you hit 40 or so hours. Maybe if it ever gets out of early access I'll write a new review, but I bought this game when it first came out a very long time ago and there have been no real updates since, so I think this game might be dead...

Starbound has a brilliant core idea, but it is certainly not there yet. My main reservation is how boring the enemy types and planets are - planets of a particular biome have no specific enemy types or dungeons, and different levels just mean the amount of damage/health of enemies differ. There really seems to be no variation throughout the game - once you've visited one planet you've visited most of them, and they have no consistent theme. This game is thoroughly enjoyable to play and explore for a few hours, but if you want to get powerful it just becomes a boring grind.

I also personally dislike the development cycle. Based on the website, it would seem that the devs are constantly making updates. But they seem to be churning out new features faster than they can finish them - there hasn't been a stable update for months, because the devs are too busy making new features to actually finish working on the ones they started 4+ months ago (although I hear an update is finally coming).

Essentially, starbound has little content repeated an infinite amount of times, it really doesn't have much interesting progression and the development cycle is painfully slow and inefficient. In its current state, I really don't believe that this game is worth it. However, should they successfully develop it further (which will probably take several years given their current speed), I think the game certainly has potential. Currently, however, the game is not fun for more than a few hours so I do not recommend it.

I did write once a review about this game. It was good but I will have to rewrite it as I did play for a bit and I must say... That game is not worth the money. Terraria was cheaper and its considered more stable and complete game that Starbound which is like really really unfinished game for almost duble the price and not being updated for months now. I feel cheated and I would like to say Im very disapointed. For the money I did spend on this crappy game I could buy finished Skyrim with all DLC and that says something

First things first. I, and my best friend, fell into the hype of this game. The music is great, the artstyle is great, the overall gameplay and the combat is good fun. We had fun, progressing through the tiers of gear, 200 hours in (!) I found myself just playing Terraria instead, and here is why:

Progression is stupid. I know they said they'd upgrade it (last year) but here's where it's at now: you summon some bosses and kill them then use the loots to upgrade your ship's warp drive and make a better workbench. It all works fine until you get to sector X.... and then there are no bosses, and you can essentially mine 10 feet under the surface of a level 10 planet, while in level 6 gear, and skip all of those tiers. Yes, well done.

I used to have about 20 mods on my game, and it made the game rich in content, endlessly playable and immersive, but then an update to the game version came that added nothing but a new gun and some hats shaped like fruit, which rendered all of my mods inert. I couldn't be bothered to download them all again and remake my towns again so I stopped playing.

I can't run this game, with 16gb of RAM and a 2gb graphics card, quad core 4ghz cpu. That's bonkers. I can run Dead Rising 3, Shadow of Mordor and Batman Arkham Origins with this rig, most of the time on full or almost full settings. Why can't I walk through a town with 10 npcs and a bunch of 2D fridges and desks with lamps without dropping to 5FPS? It's Bonkers.

There are no emergent or triggered / random events. Everything is stale and set in place. There are procedurally generated 'events' like a cage with a monster in it, or a small camp of hobo space bandits, but they are boring after you've found the same 'event' on 30 different planets. Also the rare super elite powerful monsters you find in the worlds do not offer good item drops. They can at times be a pain to kill and offer some kind of epic jumping around Matrix style battle (to kill a giant pig with hooves and the a** of a baboon, but when it dies it drops a GREEN (low quality) item. And currently, there is no way to sell them. With a mod you can melt them down for ores but you can't sell stuff to vendors in this game. Every item has a pixel value and nothing can be sold.

Finding guns is not as easy as it should be in a sci-fi game. I found most of the time I was running around with an overpowered hammer that killed monsters in one hit. This isn't terraria, why would you want to be running around like a Knight in a game like this? You can't craft guns, and guns you find or buy are generally much worse than the melee weapons you can craft for a few measly bars of ore.

They're not updating the game. Minus the unstable nightly builds which is just for testing stuff and doesn't really support long term play or immersion, the core game has had next to nothing added to it since the release of this Early Access (not finished but give us your money anyway) title. I used to get excited to read the new forum updates, the Starbound newsletters, because I thought I'd read about something really cool they are putting into the next patch, and that it's coming soon. But no, constant rambling about ideas that were started and never implemented, hints at future content that didn't appear or wasn't mentioned again for months, and talking balls about the lore were reasons why I never read those again. Plus, they glorified user made mods more than they did their own content.

At the moment the only updates that are in the game are a few hats shaped like fruits, a viking helmet, a revolver and some changes to farming. After a year of waiting for at least a new boss, or the ability to upgrade and customise my ship, I've just started playing other games again.

You can't have any A.I followers and all guards and npcs you place down in the world after farming ALOT of Steel and pixels to summon them, die in one hit from birds and pokemons that spawn in higher level worlds. The only way to protect them is to spam dozens of turrets which lag up the system unnecessarily, or stick around yourself, and seeing as they are unresponsive, uninteractive and do nothing but walk and jump into walls, fall through platforms then jump up again and repeat infinitely, or all huddle outside on a level 10 moon planet and die when you built them a star wars style moonbase, sputtering useless terms like "I miss Earth", there's no fun in sticking around to defend them, or being a part of the towns or bases you build.
The one thing you can have following you is a pet that you can capture. You can only capture small animals and the A.I on them is unfinished so they get stuck behind terrain and need to be recaptured and resummoned repeatedly.

Chucklefish.... took the money from us.... then looked at that as revenue from sales of the game.... instead of looking at it as an investment in an unfinished product, or even money that we Loaned them to finish the game and deliver on their promises, to pay us back with the finished game....
They took our money to complete this game.... then used that money to move into a new office and start developing a bunch of new games.... that's like if you paid me up front to build you a house, and instead of buckling down to finish that house to the best standards I can to reward your faith and patience, I made a few frames and put up some Caution building in progress signs, then proceeded to use the majority of the money to upgrade my own house, buy a new car and start building a bunch of hobbying projects of my own.
Apparently they made 10 million dollars from pre-orders and kickstarter programs....

Forgive me for appearing obnoxious but 10 million dollars... is alot of money... a hell of alot of money.... and honestly you could give a goldfish 10 million dollars and expect a better game, made faster than this.

Early Access Review
This game looked awesome when I saw it in the store, so I bought it. I played it for about a 24 hours (not all at the same time of course) then I got bored, Thats the problem. With updates that come out rarely and hardly ever add anything. I hope the best for the game because it WAS one of my faves. I really dont know what I should rate this game. If there was a "Meh" button I would press it. P.S. Pls get out of early access already or I will rustle your jimmies so hard that you will cry watermelons. <3
