Winter update [UNSTABLE] Edition! ~*The More You Know*~

Hey there!

We pushed the changes mentioned in our recent trailer to the unstable branch last night– rejoice! Anyone who’s been playing the nightly builds won’t see a huge difference, but anyone who makes the switch from stable to unstable will see some pretty massive changes.

So here’s what you need to know about the unstable update, starting with…

How to Switch to the Unstable Branch

There’s a handy tutorial right here about how to switch to the unstable or nightly branch of the beta. Be sure to follow the instructions to switch to unstable. :)

World/Character File Compatibility

If you choose to switch to the unstable branch, please know that your characters and worlds will not yet be compatible with the latest version of the game. Your old characters and worlds will still be there, but the unstable branch will use a different storage location than the stable branch for the time being, while we work out how to upgrade old characters.

We will try to maintain save file compatibility within unstable as much as possible, but it will depend on what sort of changes we have to make during unstable, so we cant make any promises.

If you are currently running nightly, then you probably already know how everything works already. FYI The unstable branch will use a ‘storage_unstable’ directory while we work on compatibility with stable.

Known Issues:
  • Many progression quests aren’t final, some are placeholders for future missions
  • Combat balance is still WIP
  • Performance issues, particularly in dense areas like dungeons and the outpost
  • Background parallaxes have problematic transitions between world layers, e.g. oceans
  • Pixel costs and rewards not yet balanced
  • Interface windows (containers, AI, etc) can remain open after switching worlds or moving away from the triggering object
  • Cooking recipes for tier 5 and 6 crops need to be implemented
  • Crops sometimes get out of sync when grown on ship
  • Enemy hit/death sounds sometimes fail to play
  • Some errors in enemy movement and pathfinding
  • Rare crash when removing items from containers, appears as “(InventoryException) Not allowed to discard stack when locked.”
  • The launcher, on some people’s machines, will spew dll errors about missing ordinals. This is not fatal however, and the launcher will still work after you close them.
  • And a whole lot more (probably)

[DAILY BLOG] Weekly Update Round-Up 19/12/2014

Evening folks!

When Starbound’s overall balance structure was first established, humanoid NPCs weren’t really a primary consideration at the time, nor was PVP, so the game was largely balanced based around the damage between players and the monsters. While this system was fine at first, it has been the root cause of much difficulty in balancing humanoid NPCs who were primarily balanced to fight against the player and got absolutely trashed by monsters, which was a problem, especially with our growing focus on missions. This necessitated a rethink of how everything was balanced.

To that end, Tiyuri and I, have gone over almost everything with a fine-tooth comb. Here’s a brief overview of the biggest changes.

- NPCs now use armor, so damage inflicted on them is reflective of their armor. Additionally their health now scales on a curve similar to the player’s.
- Damage values across the board have risen. Monsters now die more easily, but they can also kill the player faster too. Fight carefully!
- The energy scaling curve on guns has been completely reworked for a more gradual and consistent climb.
- Tiered armors have been completely rebalanced to suit the new armor and energy scaling levels.
- Players now start off with access to two weapons from the offset, with most races gaining a one-handed shortsword in addition to their broadsword. The novakids gain a two-handed rifle.
- Generated weapon values now typically sit somewhere between the tiered weapons. Rare weapons may still potentially be more damaging, but this should help to keep tiered weapons useful all throughout the game’s progression.

It might not seem like much but these changes have involved a frankly exhausting amount of configuration, but it has transformed the game feel quite significantly. A pleasant side effect of this humanoid-centric rebalancing is that the game is largely balanced for PVP too, provided all parties have suitably leveled equipment.

Guns are more dependable weapons overall, but melee inflicts monstrous damage for those willing to take the risk. In our testing, we found ourselves having heated 1-on-1 exchanges, rapidly alternating between ranged sniping and clashing swords when our energy reserves were locked away. It was both frantic and fun! I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys make of it.

So many people are giving this awesome game a negative review simply because the "Dev's havent done anything"

and explain to me that the "Dev's havent done anything"

Edit: Ignore all those other negative reviews that say "The devs never update the game" ... the devs released word that, instead of releasing multiple small updates in the actual game, they'd do so in a beta version so folks could keep up with events. There's many players writing reviews that're completely ignorant of this fact.

Edit(2): People have mentioned that the "major problems" arent getting fixed... This update shown in the video, plus the claims that Chucklefish has made point to the fact that they will HOPEFULLY be fixed.

Edit(3): For those who're hating the game because of the developers and their BS in the past... Starbound itself is an AMAZING game to mod, and it has a MASSIVE modding community. If you hate the game for WHATEVER reason, the mods will most likely change your mind.

Comments section has some neat points, go read it. Sorry to all the folks who didn't find my review helpful. I tried.

A Brief History of Chucklefish and the Community

  • First, people complain when the stable updates are too frequent to keep your save for very long.
  • So, in response, they change their updating routine and create a nightly channel to see a snapshot of their progress every 24 hours.
  • Nobody switches, ♥♥♥♥♥ing commences because they don't see any progress and assume the game is dead.
  • In response, the dev team starts frequently blogging in order to show everything they've been working on, including the arduous task of refactoring code (which is very important, but you can't have snazzy screenshots to show for it)
  • People don't read the blog, and proclaim that the game is dead.
  • Those that do read the blog complain that the latest releases are buggy.
  • Entitled gamers want everything now.

    Where is that picture of a triangular diagram showing fast, stable, and fun with the caption "Pick Two"?

    Christ almighty people, you can't have frequent updates, have those updates include lots of features, and have them be stable. Either be patient, or help them bugtest by playing nightlies. Otherwise you'll leave them no choice but to halfass the content!

    What's that? The game? Oh, yeah, I think it's pretty good. I like the setting and character design, the procedurally generated content is impressive, and it's been getting better over time. If you're into voxel-like survival/design games, then this is a good choice.

Fantastic game. Developers decided to finish the game rather than add small content updates. This naturally angered the 11-year old demographic and everyone that's played 5 minutes of it has given it a bad review.

People keep lying about no updates to hurt this game's holiday sales. They are just that, lies. The game just updated with a seven month's long update. When terraria did that, everyone cheered. When Starbound did that, everyone freaks out. What is the matter with you people? Why have you chosen to troll an actual GOOD game? Couldn't you waste your efforts on generic crap being released by consoles? The REAL enemy is big business, releasing crappy games.

This game had tons of promise when it was first released on Steam way back when. Unfortunately the developers of this game have failed to come through on the promises of all the planned features on the store page. Do not buy this game untill the official release, if that day ever comes. I'm to the point that I do not believe that day will ever come and that is why I'm writing this review almost a year after buying and playing the game. I've been waiting for a playable game for a long time since buying this and the developers are failing miserably. There could be so much to love with this game, but it all seems like a fantasy at this point and nothing more.

I did write once a review about this game. It was good but I will have to rewrite it as I did play for a bit and I must say... That game is not worth the money. Terraria was cheaper and its considered more stable and complete game that Starbound which is like really really unfinished game for almost duble the price and not being updated for months now. I feel cheated and I would like to say Im very disapointed. For the money I did spend on this crappy game I could buy finished Skyrim with all DLC and that says something

Do not buy this game until an official release hits. And that is IF that ever happens. This game has been around for almost a year now and it seems like very little has changed at all. Most of the promised content is still no where to be seen or incredibly broken. These developers had an amazing concept and idea, but very poor execution and delivery. They bit off far more than they could chew. This game could be terraria on steroids if they ever finish the dang thing. If they finish I will lose my soul to it, but so far I have seen nor heard anything positive about the game or developers.

Bought this game in pre-order. Was so promising... the game is good but the devs don't seem to make it through! They never updated and completed all they promised to released and it's been a year now that nothing serious had been added to the game.. very disapointed... could have been a good game.. I forgot it existed now and will move on something else.. damn sad, that project was... yes.. was.. promising..

The universe and crafting system start out interesting and fun to explore. Just like every other exploration and crafting game there are a bunch of mods that can keep the experience going longer. Unfortunately I found this game un-optimized, lagging frequently despite hardware much stronger than recomended. With friends and patience maybe, bu the game needs fixing and from the looks of other comments, that's never going to come. If you are really interested maybe it wil go on sale...

Bought this about a year ago, because it sounded like a cool idea. First playthroughs felt very sparse. Every once in a while, I'll try it out again, but despite making various changes and additions, it hasn't got beyond that "sparse" feeling. That might mean there is a lot of space to fill out, so that the end product will be very rich. However, after a year of changes to glacial for me to really notice, I've basically given up as my original enthusiasm has become a distant memory.

Good luck, devs, I hope you power through to the rich game I had once hoped for - sooner or later.

Starbound just... isn't as good as Terraria. it's kind of that simple. and the direction it's going, I'm not sure it ever will be as good as Terraria (let alone BETTER). Starbound is more grindy, the progress is more forced - you can't just run around and explore and do what you want - and you can't expand the one thing you want to expand: your ship.

I kind of feel like: someday, Terraria will add spaceships and galaxies... and then no one will ever think about Starbound ever again.

After a lot of gameplay and being super hyped for this to go into early access, I can safely say it has ruined kickstarter and the whole early access economy for me. Chucklefish hasn't lived up to any of their promises and for a 2d game this is a complete resource hog. What a waste. I hope they spend their millions they got off of pre-orders well, because I don't think they'll be getting any more money from anybody who knows better.

Do not buy. Even when they deem it "finished."

I've bought well over 100 games on Steam, some of them early access, but Starbound is the only one I really wish I could get a refund for. Just a total disappointment. Looks fun and expansive for the first hour or two, then the realisation starts to set in that the game is astoundingly empty. Terraria kept me entertained for over 250 hours. Starbound bored me after 3. Waiting months upon months for updates that were supposed to come 'thick and fast' is fun too. And don't forget the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ developers who do everything they can to remove criticism, blame the playerbase for their own failings, and generally s*** on the people who gave them money for their unfinished game with the ludicrous expectation that they would ever finish it.

Ruined my faith in early access entirely. Don't buy.

READ BEFORE BUYING

I loved terraria so when I found out this game was coming out, I pre ordered it as soon as possible. I followed it for 1 year prior to it being released, checking everyday for an update or their news blog. I became a part of the forum to satisfy my craving to play this game. I was met with nothing more than a very, very strict, open world terraria. I believe in their quest to out do terraria (and thats what it was, dont believe me, look at the developers(spoiler alert starbounds head dev left terraria to make a "better game")), they lost the sense of what made terraria a good game in the first place. It brings me great sadness that I have to critque them like this, but its the truth. Believe me when I say that I searched high and low for positives in this game.

Pros:
-Beautiful, extremely bountiful randomly generated environment
-Random from weather to dirt color, amazing
-Very large worlds, inside of very large solar systems, inside of galaxies, infinite planets
-Large amount of vanity and places to explore
-A handful of difference races, all with unique and difference building styles and weapons
-Dynamic and beautiful lighting engine
-

Major Cons:
-Little to motivation to work for loot
:Rather than grinding and trying to find ores underground, players find it much simpler to explore and find ruins which have the already smelted and refined bars in abundance to say the least, there is zero motivation to delve underground other than to seek death and the occasional useless ore that you could easily find thousands of bars in the house at the planets landing spot
-No motivation to settle
:The is zero reason for a player to settle on any landmass other than to simply store items, which your ship is more than capable of completing this task on its own. You have no civilians to tend to, you dont need to grow crops, nothing. This inspires nomads to simply move from planet to planet stripping the surface generated dungeons for high tier loot that would take hours to find below ground(Ties into first con)
-Very unnatural an forced progression
:This is a bit vague but bare with me, with terraria, bosses were the method of advancing as well. However, the difference is with terraria, the available ore that is key to defeating these bosses can be obtained and smelted with moderate effort and grinding. With Starbound, you cannot move past certaint elements without beating bosses and obtaining their smelting core. While terraria does this as well, the ore that they allow prior to recieivng this item is well capable of defeating the boss that is next in the progression.

Trivial Cons:
-Races hold no dynamics other than building styles(Fish cant breath under water, ect)
-THOUSANDS of colors of dirt, that all take different inventory slots
-Infrequent and disgraceful updates
-Weapons range from useless to insanely over powered with no inbetween
-Land on planet, look on surface for dungeons, leave, zero connection to lands
-CONSTANT search for fuel for your ship, to the point where you are always looking for that
-Very little graphics settings, in which npcs and enemies inspire the worst lag I have ever incountered(bad coding)
-Enemies range from pathetic to the devil himself in terms of difficulty
-The rarest of loot is found in the barns on the planets surface, instead of the planets core
-Planets are waste lands filled with empty caves and npcs

To be frank it just feels empty, early access or not. There is no motivation to do anything, no loot isnt special or "rare" because it can be found in any given house on any planet. I found the main reason I even wasted my time playing this game was spent searching for terrains I had not yet seen, for simple wow factor. The game was in short, a total failure and not what they had conveyed from their original plans. SURE it's early access, try again in what they have put up to be in terms of updates in a year or two.
