[DAILY BLOG] Update Round-Up! 20/01/15

Hey there! ːpizzasliceː

As Tiy mentioned in his last post, we’re now back in the office after a refreshing holiday and back to work preparing for a stable update. Hooray!

There are a few things that we need to address before the update will be ready. One is, of course, bug fixes. We’ve been looking at your feedback and bug reports over the break, and this week I’m focusing on working through as many of these miscellaneous issues as possible while we get up to speed. Today I cleaned up a number of annoying things with staves and bows, such as: players being forced to walk/stand when cycling weapons, right click charging but not firing, being able to charge (and being forced to walk) without energy, etc. I’m hoping to get through most of this rapidly shrinking issue list by the end of the week.

After that we’ve got a few large-ish but clear tasks. We need to balance the effectiveness of armor against very high and low rate of fire weapons. Kyren will be doing everything she can to improve performance for both servers and clients. Omni will be fixing the parallax transitions between layers. Artists are adding more micro dungeons and miscellaneous content to improve variety of exploration, particularly underground. If we have time, we’d also like to add a key binding GUI and possibly some form of planet bookmarking or teleportation. Once all that’s done, we can finally update the stable branch, and move on to more new and exciting features!

We’ve spent some time today updating the Starbound font amongst other things.

Hopefully this font should be easier to read, contains some fun symbols and also contains a huge amount more special characters.

It’ll also be useful in the upcoming custom controls GUI.

For the past week and a half, a bunch of us have been busy adding many more microdungeons to the game.

These will be small to medium sized areas that you’ll discover while exploring beneath the surface. Right now we have about 100 of these microdungeons prepared for implementation. Here’s a few examples:

Server exploit disclosure (2 vunerabilities, workarounds and fixes available)

A vulnerability has been discovered in the Starbound server executable that allows writing non-arbitrary data to an arbitrary file that the user running the starbound_server executable has permissions to write to.

The mechanics of this vulnerability involves incorrectly validating sector names from the client.

This vulnerability affects versions Enraged Koala and lower. It is fixed in the current unstable and the current nightly. To workaround this issue run the server under a heavily restricted user account. Unfortunately, it is still possible to denial of service attack a server using the workaround. Thanks goes to members of the ##starbound-modding IRC channel for bringing this issue to our attention.

A vulnerability has been discovered in the Starbound server executable that allows players to gain admin privileges if they have been in the same area as an admin user.

The mechanics of this vulnerability involves cloning the uuid of the admin player.

This vulnerability affects all current versions; however, has been fixed in our repository and any nightly version dated after Jan 9 should be immune. To workaround, un /admin yourself before logging out. If you have logged out as /admin the last time you logged out, simply log in and un /admin yourself and log out. This exploit only functions if were an admin the last time you logged out or you were an /admin the last time an automatic store was running and haven't logged out yet.

To find out if you are currently an admin you may type: "/whoami"

More specific technical details will be forthcoming after the next stable update.

First a sidenote: it says that I have played Starbound for 100 hours. This is from the launcher being up in the background as I seldom turn off my computer.
The real number is closer to something like ten, maybe even less. I write this because people will be tempted to call me out on one hundred hours of time played must mean that I actually love the game, just like how I love waiting for the bus, which I have probably also done for several hundred hours in real life.

This game has so many positive reviews specifically complaining about negative reviews that I am almost tempted to call
Chucklefish out on paid lobbyism, but maybe these are just run-of-the-mill fanboys.

Many negative reviews have been misrepresented so I will try to explain what my problem is in as clear a way as possible.
Basically it boils down to this: It was supposed to be released in 2013. Two years later and it is still in early access.

Some people have argued that they never update the game. This isn't true and fanboys as well as chucklefish themselves
have used this as a strawman to brush off all criticism. The problem isn't that they haven't done anything. The problem is that they are two years behind schedule, and seem all too content to move forward at a slovenly pace after making a quite ridiculous sum of money. You'd think this cash would encourage them to take their own release dates a bit more seriously. I get it, people don't always make the right predictions in terms of timescale. In fact, more often than not they get it wrong.

Take the concept of Valve-time for instance. But come on, two years behind schedule, still more artists working on the game than programmers(four programmers for those who are curious), despite a good bit of money having been made from it even before it is finished. And to top this off they are appearently working on a new game before this one is even finished. Not finished and two years behind schedule, mind you.

For people who still don't see the problem: time matters. People change. Chances are you didn't wish for the same stuff you wanted last year or the year before that for christmas.
If you order a pizza you might be dissapointed if the delivery guy is an hour late, and if he is stuck in traffic so heavy that he won't be able to deliver it for at least two years, despite having your money already, well, the good news is that in the future you will one day be pleasantly surprised with a cold pizza being delivered to your front door.
Unless the pizza company has closed down in the meantime.

Some people also have the good faith to assume that Chucklefish spending so much time on this game is a sign of passion, love and the quality work that goes into it.

Choosing to believe that they do this so that the game will be as good as possible before release.
My comment on how time plays a part in our appreciation and desire for things nonwithstanding, I invite these people to check out the gem that is Duke Nukem Forever. At least that's one turd nobody paid for before it was released.

I wouldn't even be so annoyed at this very casual attitude towards profiting several million dollars, breaking your release date with two years and counting, and getting annoyed when people ask when the game is coming out (google up some old tweets from Tiy), if most of their updates didn't consist of visual content in the vein of furniture, clothing etc.

To me the novelty of dressing up an alien monkey wears off quickly. What I am looking for is things that extend actual gameplay. Thing like quests, non-procedurally generated npc's, new game mechanics.
Yes there has been some of that, but not two years worth. Not by a very long shot.

Maybe this game draws so much ire from me since it was the first early access game I bought into. It will probably also be the last, now that I am no longer naive enough to think that developers won't abuse the freedom of this particular business model.

Do buy: If you are amused by dressing up cute alien sprites in different clothes, and if good pixel art alone is enough for you to be satisfied.

Don't buy: If you are compelled by the idea of a vast adventure spanning an entire universe. The vast adventure consists of procedurally generated content and a handful
of quests. And only if you play the unstable buggy release.

To quote 'Fharl' of Metacritic...
"Two years ago, Tiyuri (Starbound's lead developer) left the Relogic Team (responsible for Terraria) and began his own project. Since then, he's been responsible for a quite successful faux-Kickstarter that landed him $4M for the purposes of "speeding up beta," signed on with Steam for an additional estimated $15M, moved the majority of his team to an incredibly expensive-to-live-in city (minus Bartwerf, one of his more talented programmers), and failed to deliver much beyond a tech demo for an entire universe of promises and assurances. Having failed to meet the 2013 deadline and with 2015 rapidly approaching, it seems that the "1.0" sticker will be applied to this game in order to avoid dishing out the refunds that so many Early Access supporters have been clamoring for since they realized that they were only inflating the massive ego of the sprite artist that nearly sank Terraria before it even left port by stealing Final Fantasy V sprites for Redigit to use. If you liked Terraria, you're in good company. Tiy loved it so much, he ripped it off himself."

I bought this game 2 years ago after playing terraria, it was in early acces then. Fast forward it's still early access. It's games like Starbound that make the public think early access games are a scam to get your money for an unfinished product and gives the developer no incentive to finish(already paid). Everytime the developer is asked about a completed game they bring up a giant list of things needed to be implemented, and it is just lip service at this point. Like "we're trying for a new mission and biome we are going for 6 missions." 2 years ago the game had 6 missions Stop hiding behind early access and put out a finished product. At this point buying this game is criminal.

To those who've been patient with ChuckleFish, I salute you. I know for many of us this was supposed to be the 'spiritual successor' to games like Terraria where ideas are expanded upon and the sandbox environment reaches a new tier of enjoyment and creativity. I once believed that Starbound may well be this next step; based on my last playthrough as of roughly a week ago, I am closing in on the certainty that it will not.

I initially played through Starbound when it was early released in the Early-Access 'Beta' (and to be perfectly accurate it was far cry from what I would have considered a beta game). I fundamentally enjoyed some of the mechanics and certainly bought into the hype of what it would eventually become: a space-based exploration game with an element of combat built into it.

It was interesting, it still was linear and boring in the end, but I knew that it wasn't ready for prime-time. I had the serious expectation that it would be within some amount of time; after all, Tiy was involved.

I've recently switched to the nightly builds and went through another playthrough of the game. I frankly will say I'm shocked that the game essentially hasn't changed in the year since I've played it. Sure, there's some reorganization of the quest system, the way in which progression proceeds changed slightly but overall the game was still in the same state it was in the initial 'beta' phase it was the year previously. Some improvements, I'll grant, but certainly not to the level I would have expected of a 'full time commitment to development' as promised from ChuckleFish with a full year's worth of effort.

It simply lacks focus and is still not enjoyable. The combat has been reworked, reworked again, and then reworked again. Numerous small additions (primarily in the in-game clutter department) have been added but fail to deliver any cohesive theme or point. The planetary exploration has had random new bits associated with it (like underground mini-biomes that apparently house 'fabulous loot' which is generally procedure-generated garbage) that contribute very little or nothing to the experience. The quest system is resolved within a few hours. The upgrading of tiers are the same thing for each tier just with a new name. The combat is still clunky and boring. Sure, there's lots of new random items to craft (most of it useless, because it's still not apparent how or why I should build or craft anything in the game) but that's essentially it. The towns, castles and sewers are still there but just like a year ago have no motivating goal to prod me to explore them.

No unifying vision. No known objective (other than the straightforward quest system). Nothing.

If its current state is soon to be labelled 1.0 then I would highly recommend you avoid. I had hoped by this point that the development team would have centered in on what the game's purpose should be about and refined the experience but they have not. I agree with most of the steam reviews that, aside from the few cheerleaders for the company, the progression of this enterprise has been lackluster at best. Devs continue to blame their customers for not being patient enough while simultaneously - get this - have NINE OTHER GAME forums for other games that are either in kickstarter or development mode. ChuckleFish had better, in the very near future, decide if they want to be known as a company that promises the world and delivers a gold-plated turd or if they truly appreciate the fanbase and buckle down on projects they commit to.

i just did pros and cons

-Beautiful, extremely bountiful randomly generated environment
-Random from weather to dirt color, amazing
-Very large worlds, inside of very large solar systems, inside of galaxies, infinite planets
-Large amount of vanity and places to explore
-A handful of difference races, all with unique and difference building styles and weapons
-Dynamic and beautiful lighting engine

Major Cons:
-Little to motivation to work for loot
:Rather than grinding and trying to find ores underground, players find it much simpler to explore and find ruins which have the already smelted and refined bars in abundance to say the least, there is zero motivation to delve underground other than to seek death and the occasional useless ore that you could easily find thousands of bars in the house at the planets landing spot
-No motivation to settle
:The is zero reason for a player to settle on any landmass other than to simply store items, which your ship is more than capable of completing this task on its own. You have no civilians to tend to, you dont need to grow crops, nothing. This inspires nomads to simply move from planet to planet stripping the surface generated dungeons for high tier loot that would take hours to find below ground(Ties into first con)
-Very unnatural an forced progression
:This is a bit vague but bare with me, with terraria, bosses were the method of advancing as well. However, the difference is with terraria, the available ore that is key to defeating these bosses can be obtained and smelted with moderate effort and grinding. With Starbound, you cannot move past certaint elements without beating bosses and obtaining their smelting core. While terraria does this as well, the ore that they allow prior to recieivng this item is well capable of defeating the boss that is next in the progression.

Trivial Cons:
-Races hold no dynamics other than building styles(Fish cant breath under water, ect)
-THOUSANDS of colors of dirt, that all take different inventory slots
-Infrequent and disgraceful updates
-Weapons range from useless to insanely over powered with no inbetween
-Land on planet, look on surface for dungeons, leave, zero connection to lands
-CONSTANT search for fuel for your ship, to the point where you are always looking for that
-Very little graphics settings, in which npcs and enemies inspire the worst lag I have ever incountered(bad coding)
-Enemies range from pathetic to the devil himself in terms of difficulty
-The rarest of loot is found in the barns on the planets surface, instead of the planets core
-Planets are waste lands filled with empty caves and npcs

Save your money, do not buy this game, wait until it's finished if it ever is.
To give you an idea exactly how bad Chucklefish is, the modding community released promised features ages before chucklefish even got started, a mod is typically created by one or two people and that is apprently enough to show up everyone who was working on this game.

I won't sugar coat it, they are barely working on starbound anymore, and still they're being as lazy about it as they can be. Because if a few people can create over a thousand different gameplay elements in less time than it takes the actual dev team to change the fuel system for ships, it's a really bad sign.
As I am writing this, Starbound has not been offically updated for over 2 years and it's still in early access.

Again, do not buy this game, buy some thing better.
Doesn't matter what, just buy something else and wait foir this to be finished.

Full of potential and promise...but after two years neither have come to fruitition.

-A lot of unique features
-Awesome SCI-FI atmosphere
-Every planet is unique, every race is unique. It becomes worth exploring everything

-A lot of extremely inconvenient bugs, even after two years.
-Progression is incredibly frustrating and slow.
-Unless you opt into the buggy beta and unstable builds, you won't see any major updates for a long time.
-Broken promises and stagnated potential (So much was promised and hyped, and almost nothing came from it so far.)

The best thing about this game so far is the message it brings that Early Access needs regulations. When, and if, it ever lives up to it's hype, it might be worth the purchase. For now, use your money to get a better game (For the same price, Binding of Isaac:Rebirth is fantastic if you enjoy gritty, grimdark rogue-lites)

Its like terraria, But without fun.

It feels like a weird half finished ripoff of terraria, without everything that made terraria good. as you played terraria it opened up, but in this, get used to the mechanics you start out with, those are the only ones you get.

bosses are weird and unbalanced - there is a boss you can beat by standing still.
No reason to build
absolutely no replayability for a sandbox game
"exploring" and just walking is painfully slow and boring

for the entire game the only thing you will be doing is mining for the next material, and occasionally fighting an awful boss. every material is a boring, static, and slightly stronger than the last one.

Just get terraria, it is $5 cheaper and with a lot more content and quality.

A lot of hype was generated and the devs were highly involved in the community until the first release. At this point, features were cut, feedback went unanswered and the devs stopped interacting with the community almost entirely. It is well known within the communities both on Steam and the official forums that moderators unfairly silence critics during big events such as a large update in an effort to keep potential new customers drawn in by the 'big upcoming thing' ignorant of the ongoing issues. It is unprofessional to not only ignore community outcry when enrolled in the Early Access program, but to outright silence said outcry.

Incredibly slow update process even for a small team; this title has been being worked on since 2012 and the 'sell' function for merchants still hasn't been implemented, there is no user interface for keybinds, and an array of other things (check the forums or other reviews). The focus has been on implementing different biomes (palette/skin swaps of environments in the case of Startbound) and art assets over baseline game mechanics.

I would not recommend this game based for one on the lack of content and the preference of the devs to consistently release flash over substance, but the main reason would be the unethical treatment of the community/potential new buyers by the devs.

Mixed review for a game I have played kind of a lot since I can't play Terraria on my Apple desktop (but that is material for another review).

I am a big fan of this genre for the possibilities it can/could offer, there's a lot you can do, quests, surprising environments, tools and interesting crafting ideas.
Now this is where I believe Starbound has not hit the target (yet) in my honest opinion.

It has good starts of ideas, but in order to get some of the features offered by the game, you gotta watch a walkthrough or look it up online, or you're gonna be clicking and tapping all the keys of your keyboard for several minutes like an idiot.
It is not totally intuitive in that regard.

There's a try at a tutorial in the first hours of gaming, on your "Journal", which I assume is where the developpers want the source of information/quests/guidebook for moving forward to be, and I get that this is an early access release but I've had the game for almost a year now I reckon. I find it kind of a letdown to not include what could be the motivator here after so long. It brings a "Now what?" feeling.

Given, once you have looked up online that there are different sectors which have different levels of difficulty (monsters, ore distribution, weapons and objects, etc.), you can go for it and craft the required items to summon the boss which allows you access to more ore/weapons/armor/planets, and that can take a lil while and put your head in the game for a few more hours.
After doing all this exploration, you kinda start stumbling across planets that look similar to that one you already visited like 4 planets ago, or, if you're like me and you did use the set as a home feature, looking like your home-planet, and the only thing remaining is collecting, maxing up your vines to make bandages, your coal for fuel, collecting all the fruit/tree seeds existing, crafting, farming etc.
And again, if you're like me and you don't play in Multi-player mode, it gets meh after a while.
Because it has been on Early access for so long, exploring new planets is not always as exciting, especially if you've already seen all the biomes and dungeons available for now, you can easily notice their pattern and/or easily cheat by digging a way in closer to things to loot or digging around to avoid it etc., ditto for boss monsters or villages/houses/camps.
It just gets a tiiiiiny bit repetitive.

One big positive point that I would like to stress on the music though. I have a sweet spot for Story/Quest/Chara dev and games OSTs and to be honest, I could listen to the soundtrack all day long.
And a silly positive point: the Frog merchant with a buncha dogs in his/her house (wish I could've adopted one as a pet).

All in all, I guess if/when the official game is released, there should be improvement coming our way.
Or so I hope, because I do like sandbox modes, but right now, this version lacks a spark of interest, of novelty, to make me recommend it.

$15M+, 2 years later, a release date is still nowhere to be seen.
Chucklefish says that kinda money is enough to fund Starbound for another 9 years, but for what? 9 years of Early Access? Cause at this point I'm convinced this game is never going to be finished. And I'm getting really tired of the R. R. Martin impressions.

"It's coming! Don't you worry! The finished game is on the way! We promise!"

It's 2015 and the devs have only seemed to pile more features (and problems) onto Starbound without bothering to fix the old ones. It has been a year since I've played last and the combat system is STILL unbalanced. Sometimes I visit the site hoping for some good news, but I am only ever met with disappointment. I'd rather have a few working toys than constantly be bombarded with hundreds of broken ones.

Starbound has single-handedly ruined Early Access for me.
I will never purchase another unfinished game as long as I live.

Being a dedicated Terraria fan who was active on the forums back in the day, I spent a lot of time playing. (260 hours, intrest had died after my world saves wer deleted by a reocurring bug) So of couse when starbound was revealed, I was excited. A few month later I bought into the beta, played for a while, and absolutely didn't get it. The orld was empty, and I tried playing it like I would Terraria or minecrat- make a base, make a crating table, put the fire down, etc. But when I got to the quest of "Make a beacon" or some such, I got stuck. I couldn't find ore, and crafting is also based on how much money you have, as wel as reources. I tried grinding for cash by killing monsters, but it was so slow, I just put it away.
More recently I tried again to ifigure out the game, and I saw no progress. The NPCs were pointless other than having cool styled items and free chests, and the underground was depressingy barren compared to Terraria's.
In short, I'll summarize my experience as:
Good- very appealing environments, good variety of monsters, cool character races and customization, and (sometimes) satisfying combat.
Bad- clunky inventory and menu design mean a lot of clicking around to find what you want, random difficulty because of variety of monsters, VERY slow harvesting speeds, slow and boring travel, combat makes you feel very weak and is unrewarding, very material-needy crafting, slow gameplay pace, and many things aren't explained.

Of course, I could just be stupid and am playing the game totally wrong, or t gets better after building the satellite. But if just playing the first world you spawn in is this repelling and tedious, is it really worth playing more?
All in all, I think this game would be better if it cleaned up the menus, made resources more available, got rid of the "pixels in crafting" idea altogether, and made ombat and finding resources more gratifying,and made the pace faster and less grindy.
I might try again later, just because it makes me upset to think that all the pars f a fun game are here, but not done quite well enough.

When I first got this game, I played it for a few hours, then stopped. I thought nothing of stopping, I thought that it was because I found other games to play, which happens, even with games that are my favorite.

However, I recently retried playing again, and now know why I stopped. To put it simply, this game is boring. There isn't a sense of flow, or actual adventure. While there seems to be a large amount of customization, it's very lacking, and you find yourself wanting the next part of the game. You want to find that big civilization that will have more to do, but it isn't there. You want the high tech armor and special equipment, the better building blocks and house parts, but they are so far in the distance, with so much tedium in the way, you wonder "Why bother?".

The dungeons and mine shafts have little to nil, enemies go down easily with even the most rudimentary of weaponry, and important items (like food) only drop with VERY specific weapons, thus disallowing you from using the weapons you want. And when I say enemies go down easily, I am not kidding. Let's use an example. On one of the planets I found a laboratory. In that lab were what APPEARED to be heavily armed soldiers and scientists. They said some generic "leave the area" phrases, before I started to kill them. I was wearing no armor, and was carrying a cheap weapon I had found randomly in a chest. I only had to heal myself once.

In short, this game just isn't worth it. You want a nice, open world 2d building game with lots of options? Go with Terraria, the game that this game blatantly ripped off.

I was very excited for Starbound......but then was very dissapointed
Here are my thoughts
-mining is boring and takes forever with no yeild on good ores
-exploring is boring(for it is really rare to find something interesting or different)
-the mosters act all the same(dumb) and are basically the same as each other except on how they look different
-massive universe to explore
-planets have different levels(difficulty)
-quests you can do (if you find them)
-small story line

I thought this would be a good game since it looks a bit like Terraria, but I was wrong. This game is just crappy devs from Terraria that decided to make their own game, which is alright. The only problem is all they want is the money. They really don't care about updating the game & when they do they didn't do it very well. If you want an actually decent game like this, then buy Terraria
