Starbound v1.1 - Changelog

Hey, everyone! It's patch day!

Version 1.1 is our first content patch since the full release of Starbound -- we've added a fishing game, item collections, Novakid villages and more! Check the changelog below for a list of major/minor changes and bug fixes, and then go relocate some Fluffalo!

Major Changes

  • Fishing
    • Two tiers of fishing rods are now craftable from the Foraging Table and can be used to fish on ocean planets (including arctic, toxic and magma oceans)
    • Added 48 unique fish types to catch
    • Rare fish can give valuable rewards, including reel and lure upgrades to enhance your fishing rod
  • Collections
    • New Collections interface tracks various kinds of collectables including captured pets, figurines, fish, cooking recipes, fossils, and bugs

  • Added the Relocator tool, which allows non-hostile creatures such as critters, fish, bugs, and farm animals to be moved

  • Added friendly Novakid villages including a variety of new Novakid-themed furniture and objects

I am not really sure what to make of the final version of Starbound. I bought this in it's early stages of development, and I have to say first off that I think it was a real mistake to release the game so early. It was literally years away from completion when it was first released. Way, way too early. Anyway, on to the final version, and I think I prefer the earlier version!!! The earlier version was more of a sandbox idea, you could just wander about and build things. The final version, though, I really find the alien creatures very annoying. They always attack you and seem able to kill you with just a few hits. When you are trying to learn the game, and more to the point when you are more interested in exploration and building rather than fighting, their constant presence of atacking creatures is very tiring. And I also have some objection to the fact that most alien cratures would be unfriendly. It would have completely changed the feeling of the game had they mostly been friendly instead. There really should be an option to disable or at least reduce the numbers of them. They are literally every ten feet in the game. So I guess whether you like Starbound very much depends on what you expect from the game. Recommended? Well, like I said, depends what you expect from the game. I will say yes, but like me you may find it a bit annoying.

Base Game = Ok Game pretty Fun.
Base Game + Multiplayer = The best its gonna get.
Base Game + Mods = Very very Fun.
Base Game + Mods + Multiplayer = Prepare to become StarLord as you adventure across the cosmos doing "a bit of both".
Base Game + Mods + Multiplayer + Free Time = Police being called to investate why you have disappeared and havent shown up to work in two weeks.

10/10 Would be a suspected kidnap victim again

To give a good discription of why this game is good, I only need to say a few words.

It's Terraria with space travel and a story. Also, it's no man's sky with content besides geology simulator.

Now, that's just the surface of this glorious experience. You can be a human, bird, space gorrila, a tribal plant thing, a japanese fish, or a person that was a star. Oh, and I forgot to mention the feudal robots.

There are space alpacas, penguins that are criminals, frogs, space nazis, space hitler, tentacle planet, (formerly known as earth), Giant spiders, giant holographic ape heads that shoot lazer fists at you, bird robot, proceduraly generated monsters, and worlds.

Now, there's one more thing about this game, that can eighter; make it better, or make it much, much, oh so much worse. Mods. If you're going to mod this game, stick to the workshop. It has the quality mods, made by people who arn't bronies or furries. You'll get ship, weapon, meme, and cosmetic mods, with a few race extenders and races. There are some S.A.I.L replacements here too. But, besides the workshop, DO NOT, AND I REPEAT DO NOT INSTALL ANY MODS THAT ARE NOT FROM STEAM. From nexus, you'll get porn and fetish mods, and anywhere else, it's much the same. One more risk from instaling mods, workshop or not, you have the chance of completely bricking a save, because you installed it incorrectly, or you removed it. (ship mods are the worst in this regard.)

In short, there's lots to do and see in this game, and if you ignore the existance of 75% of the mods for this game, you'll have a great time probably. Or your computer will just refuse to run it at a decent frame rate. That's a problem too.

Starbound before release: I want to go to a snow planet, but it's too cold there. I'll have to find and craft some snow survival gear so I can travel there. If there's a snowstorm, I'll have to prepare an igloo and go underground for warmth until the storm is over.

After release: You will die on the snow planet unless you do a quest to get a suit upgrade so you can become invincible to the cold. The snow protection gear is no longer craftable, you have to quest for it... and it's useless.

Why did you replace the open world with more quests? I liked when the quests were optional, when you wanted to upgrade your ship. Now it's linear? I don't want to grind on my starting planet so I can even go to the next planet.

It used to be: Whatever planet you started on would be cool. But to get to any other planet, you'll have to fix your ship.

Now: You have to stay on this planet and do this quest. Go underground and do all this linear stuff, then go back up to your ship and keep questing until you finally get to be able to play the dunegon you HAVE to do to get your ship fixed. If you don't have good gear, you will not be able to beat the dungeon.

The solution: Go into godmode, beat the dungeon, grind the quests, and finally you're able to actually play the game.

Can we have an option for a rollback please?

So... I've played this game before it was fully realeased. It was... alright, to say the least. Now it is... alright yet again, just a bit better.
The thing that made me buy it was space, and the fact it has exploration and sandbox features. I always wanted to have a sandbox game where I can do whatever the hell I want in the infinite universe, and Starbound is that game.

"Then why do you give this game a negative review?" You might ask.

Let me first tell you what's great about this game:
1. You have your own spaceship where you can travel wherever you want;
2. There is some nice variety in planets, monsters, biomes, weapons etc.;
3. There's the story, which isn't really deep or complex in quests, but it's good IMO;
4. Each race has history and culture... except for Novakids but that's because they don't care about history;
5. There is a lot of stuff to upgrade, collect, buy etc.;
6. You can play on instruments and form a band;
7. A lot of other things I don't remember...

Now with the issue that just makes me get bored in this game really quickly:


I honestly don't know. I just don't want to build anything. Just a thought of it demotivates me from playing, so does collecting stuff because I know that stuff like fish or cooking collections will just end up being a chore.
I didn't even get myself to decorate my ship. All I did was to upgrade it to maximum size and then just left it half empty...
I keep trying to guess what deters me from building in this game. Maybe the game is too small? Maybe there are too much furniture to pick from? I don't know... And I have the similar issue with Terraria, though there I also have issue with how it is unfriendly towards newbies (more on that in my Terraria review).

Now, it was a hard choice between recommending the game or not. My personal experience is just slightly more towards no, but that's just me.
If you had similar issues in Terraria, then you will only have fun doing main quests, you'll get bored after that. If you play Terraria a lot though then by all means buy it, you won't regret it.
Now for those non-Terraria players. If you like space and exploration, then I guess you'll like this game. If you are also creative and like building, then you should give it a try.

Since the laster few updates for starbound after launch, it seems like the game has
a bigger sense of adventure but without all the troubles of finding things now.
Like the one sign mission beta... But, of course this game has now finally up to the end of the game.
There is a lot of mods to choose from, from music to weapons and races even.
The community has much potentional for this game, and hopefully chucklefish can support the modding community.

I'd like to give this game a big 10/10 for everything it has.

Freaking. Awesome. An amazing game, Terraria on crack with hints of what No Man's Sky could've been. Game is challenging and enticing, really draws you in. Exploration is amazingly fun. Definitely a great game.

To be perfectly honest I had a great time for 30 hours, then I was extremely bored for the rest of my time. For comparison, after around 250 hours in Terraria, I can still go back to it and have fun. Starbound does not have that quality. And just like I would compare Mortal Kombat to Street Fighter, I will compare Starbound to Terraria. It's only fair. Now moving on.

Starbound's development has been like a team building a beautiful house over 3 years, but planning to put the roof on last. You almost made it to that final step, but then early access ended and it started raining hard, every day, nonstop. Now all the work you did inside is getting water damage, and that damage is advancing throughout the entire structure day by day. Eventually it will stop raining, but you are going to have water damage all over the place, and the home's value is going to go down, and unfortunately, the city wont condemn and demolish it. But they really should because your team has the decision-making skills of a mother who lets her children fall into gorilla exhibits at zoos. Yeah, I really do feel this cheated. I actually had a noble plan of only reviewing games I like, then I met you.

Got the game on pre-order waaaaay back in the day, played it a bit at the time. When I eventually got tired of all the instability and frequent world-wipes and unfinished content (as there does tend to be in early-alpha builds, so no grudge there), I put it away so I could see with fresh eyes what it would look like when it was finally "ready".

First, some positives:

*The game does feel a lot more purposeful now with its over-arching story than it did way back in the early days. It also has a decent (if not exactly great) sense of humour.

*The tutorial mission is a nice intro to the controls (but badly needs to be optionally skippable).

*Lots of stuff to build with (if you can scrape together the pixels to buy it or the blueprints to craft it). The possibilities for base-building are probably the game's strongest point.

*The graphics are still nice, while the soundtrack is full of overly-catchy "ear-worms" (although many are really not very appropriate for the overall atmosphere of the game itself: "You've just stumbled into a giant eerie cavern made of packed bones and tar-pits... let's play a cheerful little piano-ditty over that!").

*The addition of the outpost provides a nice mission-hub (although things are placed much too far apart and ultimately there's just not enough utility provided by it all).

*The addition of the various official "collections" is on the right track (but still feels a bit half-baked and incomplete).

*I still enjoy trying to gather together as many different crops as possible in a comprehensive megafarm (though the food system in general is about equal parts fun and frustration).


You may have noticed that even most of the positives have major qualifications attached to them. Yet, all that said, I am seriously shocked at how user-unfriendly the game remains after, what is it, almost 5 solid years now (!) of supposed "beta-testing". It's even more shocking given the (inevitable) example of Terraria standing right there beside it the entire time, showing plainly how to do stuff right for anyone who cared to look. Here are just a few things that I can't believe didn't get fixed ages ago:

*Making storymission-progress with friends in multiplayer will make it impossible for you to complete the same story-missions in your single-player world without going into admin mode and cheating them completed!! Blizzard handled single/multiplayer progression in Diablo 1 and 2 almost flawlessly nearly 20 years ago, yet this bug is apparently longstanding and doesn't seem likely to be fixed anytime soon.

*The controls are still clunky as hell, with too many important functions (hunting/farming/watering/healing/blockbuilding) being made dependent on too few equipment-slots. The item-handedness is pointless and just makes the problem worse. At least let us make something like a "farming build" with a hoe in one hand and watering-can in the other, since there is absolutely no reason a hoe needs to be "2-handed." Or better yet, just make all those basic functions passively available if you simply have the appropriate item somewhere in your inventory.

*Movement-control is way too sloppy and loose for a game where a wrong move can easily send you falling off a mountain or down a pit to your death, resulting in the scattering of almost everything you happen to be carrying at the time. And of course when you die you not only drop all your healing items but also all the materials you need to make more of them, so unless you have a big stockpile squirreled away at all times, have fun grinding up a bunch more of those every time you need to go retrieve your fallen loot, lest you finally make it back only to be immediately killed again by whatever got you last time. Wheeeee!

*Bad controls are made even worse by the amount of inventory management you need to do using an inventory-system that makes it almost impossible to do anything else while the window is open. Depending on your resolution, non-scaling item tooltips will happily pop up with the single bit of useful information sitting off-screen unless you either move the whole inventory window higher or shift the item you're interested into a higher row of the inv screen (I'm thinking here of the rottenness-status of food items, where it is all too easy not to notice just how far-gone something is until your nice meal suddenly turns into a puddle of green goo).

I could go on (and on and on). All of these things might sound like pretty minor quibbles, and individually it would probably be easy to get used to any one or two of them, but all taken together they paint a strange picture of a dev-team that either still doesn't actually know what "fun" is, or has a seriously warped definition of it.

Either way, Starbound remains a basically-promising game that, after nearly half a decade of work, still isn't nearly what it was promised to be, and basically just not much fun. Maybe I'll check it out again in 2021.

I don't know about how the game was before it has been released, but I like it just as it is.
I really loved Minecraft, and now it's the upgraded version of it.
You can build stuff, explore and kill monsters at the same time.
I can say I just love this game, although the main missions are not so well.

I absolutly love this game. It's fantastic. The only thing that I dislike, is that I went to buy the 4 pack to share my love of this game with 4 friends for a little less. But, due to my owning the game, I'm not allowed to buy the 4 pack. I don't know if it's the developer, or if it's Valve, but somebody made a very disgruntled customer.

I had this game since the Early Access and is truly fantastic. If you have played and enjoyed Terraria then you will enjoy this game, Starbound is much more expansive and is never ending. Modding community is great, they are always searching for ways to improve the game more and more and more. Starbound never ceases to amaze me, through the countless mods and vanilla version this is truly game that everyone should have in their library.
